When we talk about myelin damage, most of us typically think of the brain. After all, that myelin is located in your central nervous system. But the inflammation that causes myelin damage may be triggered by activity that's taking place well south of your central nervous system, in your gut microbiome, the colony of trillions of bacteria and microorganisms that live in your intestines.  Dr. Ashutosh Mangalam joins me to help us understand what this gut-brain connection is all about, how that connection impacts MS, and what you can do to change the makeup of your gut microbiome. Dr. Mangalam is an Associate Professor of Pathology at the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa, where his research is focused on studying the gut microbiome and the immune system in multiple sclerosis. We're also talking about the newly published guidance from the European Committee for Treatment and Research in MS and the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, recommending autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT) for treating some cases of relapsing-remitting MS. We'll tell you about an experimental drug that may resolve MS-related vision issues through remyelination.  And we'll introduce you to this year's winner of the Barancik Prize for Innovation in MS Research. Ashutosh is one of those rare founders who founded not just one, but two unicorns. He worked at Google for 4 years, left and started Bloomreach, which was last valued at $2.2B.  Halfway through that journey, he left to do it all over again.  He started Eightfold AI which is the one we're talking about today. Ash Ashutosh is a serial entrepreneur and the Global Director of Solution Sales at Google. His data management startup, Actifio, achieved a valuation of over $1B and was acquired by Google in 2020. In this episode, Ash talks about anticipating and advancing alongside what he calls the waves of change, in reference to the surges in innovation and technology that occur over time. His entrepreneurial journey reflects those technology surges - he started out in the silicon industry, then moved on to data storage software development. His most recent startup, Actifio, was in the business of managing and securing data. Ash talks about how he had the opportunity to work with some of the largest organizations in the world to better protect and manage their data while at Actifio. At the end of the episode, third-year student Bianca Wisekal joins the conversation. She is an agribusiness management student who holds a leadership role within the Nittany Entrepreneur Society, Penn State's student entrepreneurship club. She is also an administrative operations intern within Invent Penn State, and she is a technician and lab monitor at OriginLabs, Invent Penn State's all-new fabrication space. She talks to Ash about how he stays motivated to keep innovating, as well as his predictions for where technology is heading.

For Charlie, it all started at age five, jealous of boys, because they got to take their shirts off and stand to pee. By age seven, she had a therapist who told her and her parents that this was symptomatic of something called gender dysphoria. Ecstatic that she would get to ‘be a boy,' Charlie was ushered down the medical path, with her vital records and name altered at age nine, and later put on puberty blockers and wrong sex hormones. Her family asked her if she was sure she wanted all of this. Her response? “I've never been more sure of anything in my entire life.” All twelve years of life experience couldn't have prepared her for the changes testosterone would bring. At age fifteen, she had started to wonder if the path she was on would prevent her from ever getting married or having a family. It wasn't until encountering a Reddit thread about complications of testosterone such as bone and heart disease and dementia that it occurred to her that her doctors had never told her that these "life-saving treatments" would have long term negative effects on her health. The process of coming out a second time, this time as a lesbian woman ready to detransition, was even harder than the first time. After telling herself the story for so long that she'd take her own life if she ever got her period, she developed an eating disorder, to keep delaying womanhood even without testosterone. Now nineteen, Charlie has found peace in her body and within her circle of family and friends, but she wants to challenge people to consider what would have happened if her childhood therapist had recognized her anxiety and depression instead of entertaining the ludicrous concept of being stuck in the wrong body. Ashutosh Kaushik is a UX design leader originally from Mumbai, India. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering and a Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Starting his career as a User Experience Designer at Ford Motors, Ashu later joined Walmart.com/Walmartlabs as an Interaction Designer, where he led multiple successful projects, including Pharmacy and Search redesigns. He then worked at Intuit Inc, where he played a significant role in growing the apps ecosystem for Quickbooks, followed by leading the redesign of Quickbooks.com into a successful e-commerce site. In 2020, he joined ServiceNow as a Senior Group Manager Design & Research, where he established the research team and created the design system from scratch. Currently, Ashutosh is the Director of UX at Indeed.com, leading the growth and Monetization team and driving the evolution of the business model for the billion-dollar job website.
