In this episode, we talk with Tim Smyczek about his experience as a professional tennis player. He played professionally for many years, even in the US and Australian Opens. Tim is known to many when he played in the 2015 Australian Open against Rafael Nadel. In this match, Tim did the “unthinkable” in the tennis world. Tim is very humble when talking about the years he played professional tennis. He retired from tennis in 2019 and is now a devoted family man and is currently working in real estate and private equity. Tim was exposed to Opus Dei (Latin for the “Work of God”) early in his life. He carried this religious practice with him in his tennis life. Opus Dei continues to be a very important way of life and organization for his family (Tim refers to Opus Dei as the Center of Work). Tim is dedicated to the teachings and practices of the founder of Opus Dei, Saint Josemaría Escrivá. Tim talks about one of the “Pillars” of Opus Dei that is important to him: spend time with men who are better than you. For information, follow this link: Opus Dei - Finding God in daily life
When Noah Rubin and Stefan Kozlov met in the Wimbledon 2014 final, it was thought to be one of the many steps in the progression for Stefan Kozlov, at the tender age of 16. Later that year, he knocked off his first top 100 player in Tim Smyczek, on the way to a CHALLENGER FINAL in Sacramento. Some good runs at ATP events followed, a couple Challenger titles, and then he suddenly just slowly receded away from high level tennis. It's been nearly four years since his last final, but Koz sounds like he's found a path. The 22 year old joined Noah and Mike for a reflection on his last few years. Learn more about your ad choices. With careers lasting longer than ever in professional tennis nowadays, how does one end? To discuss that, Ben welcomes Tim Smyczek back to NCR. With the US Open not awarding Tim a wild card into the tournament this year, he found out a couple days ago that he had played the final match of his pro career. Tim didn't reach the highs of many players you'd be more familiar with, but his experience is both reflective of more players who give professional tennis a shot, and also a success story. And one, as you'll learn, that he is happy to close the book on. As always, thanks for liking us on Facebook (leave comments on the episode thread! When 70th ranked tennis player Tim Smyczek played Rafael Nadal in the 2015 Australian Open he captivated the world with his sportsmanship when he had everything to lose. Would you be so honest to do the right thing under pressure?
After her long sojourn up and down Asia, Courtney gets a much deserved week off, leaving Ben to drive 100-something miles to find someone to talk to, and winds up in an adventure in Challengerland. At the $50,000 challenger in Charlottesville, Virginia, Ben talks to four(!) guests to give y'all a panoramic view of this world and the people who make it up. First is Mike Cation, the voice of the USTA Pro Circuit, who is more embedded than commentator in tennis. Next is Challenger circuit veteran Alex Kuznetsov, coach Billy Heiser (working now with Tim Smyczek and Denis Kudla), and lastly the ever-ambitious Ryan Harrison. Episode 55b, fittingly, picks up where Episode 55a left off! Ben and Courtney continue discussing the U.S. Open, starting off with Roger Federer's thoroughly depressing tournament. Then comes Richard Gasquet, who finally made it back deep into a Slam. Lastly it's John Isner, and we chat about both the much discussed crowd at his loss to Gael Monfils as well as his (and Tim Smyczek's!) third round exits. Then we go rapid fire through your questions, covering all the ones we had received by recording time as efficiently as we could. Lastly, Courtney left the tournament early and didn't get a hoodie, and she is not happy about that. But we are happy about you, dear listeners! As always, thanks for liking us on Facebook, following us on Twitter, and leaving us reviews on iTunes! You never leave us out of gas.
