Hey there and welcome to the wemove podcastIt was the end of the tennis grand slam of the Australian Open at the weekend. Pretty pumped for the level of play in both men's and women's. Congrats to Madison Keys and Jannik Sinner for their displays of Slam winning play. Continuing the theme of tennis with today's episode but focussed on the community level. A couple of episodes back we spoke to Amsterdam Tennis Society about the growth of their social tennis club, and closer to home, we have just spoken to the founding trio of Bisque Tennis club in London.Run club formats are established and continue to grow, which continues to amaze me at the evolution of the running and running community space. It's a model that's inspiring people to get up and run, move and ultimately change their physical and mental states, which is fantastic. Now this has been happening for a while, plus other sporting communities have been growing, in the training space for example with CrossFit, Hyrox and also climbing and bouldering. Racquet sports are now bubbling up, boosted by Padel and Pickle. These new sports are bringing their own innovations as they develop. The more traditional ones, in this case tennis, with it's heritage, traditions and sometimes stifling rules and norms has not seen much innovation and evolution. That is until now, with the likes of Bisque and Amsterdam Tennis Society emerging and connecting with other like minded tennis players through social platforms.Bisque founders, Alejandro, Seb and Alex sat down with me this weekend to chat Bisque, it's ideas, formats and plans for bringing players together of all levels to enjoy getting on court and hitting some balls without being bound by the sometimes stifling club traditions. Thanks to the guys for their time. If you are in London and want to get onto a tennis court, but feel reluctant to give it a go for whatever reason, check Bisque out and sign up for one of their sessions. Thanks for listening. from Chris and me. Peace.

Johannus Monday enters 2025 at 371 in the world, but as we know on the BTR Pod, the ranking very rarely tells the full story. The 6'6" lefty has evolved immensely over the last five years, and ended the 2024 season with three straight 25K titles, and a semifinal at the Knoxville Challenger. That was a special one for him, as it was a few months after he graduated from the University of Tennessee. We talk about he went from an unheralded prospect out of Hull, to one of the most feared players out of the collegiate system in the last few years. He joins Jake Fearnley, Nishsesh Basavareddy, Eliot Spizzirri and others from the 2024 class making their mark at the highest level. We go over those humble beginnings, how he got to Tennessee, that incredible 2024 class, and what he, and Mike, think he needs to do to be the best version of himself. His goals will surprise you. Nate Lammons is one of my favorite people to run in to at every tournament. He's down to earth, not impressed by pretense, and just a good human to be around. He also happens to be one of the top 20 doubles players in the world. We chopped it up about his rise to that level, and some of the top doubles topics right now, including the US decision not to play Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek during Davis Cup this year. Steph Chung is managing partner at Racquet, the New York-based magazine that takes a fresh, anti-elitist look at the world of tennis. There have been some big changes since the last issue, with editor David Shaftel and art director Larry Buchanan both leaving the magazine, and a more commercial emphasis across the pages, with a big Gucci photo shoot on the cover and inside, and a partnership with Seoul-based cultural creators Ssoldot. It's all part of a plan to take advantage of what Steph calls, “the convening power of the magazine”, and in this conversation she outlines their plan for making it more commercially successful, while expanding further into events, merchandise, and other activities based around tennis.

On this episode of the Club + Resort Talks podcast, Rob Thomas, Editor-in-Chief of Club + Resort Business, chats with Brock Orlowski, MBA, CDORS, USPTA Elite, PPR, Director of Racquet Sports at Fort Wayne (Ind.) Country Club. The two talk about everything from growing the racquets industry through The Directors' Club of America and the inaugural Directors' Club Retreat, to cultivating the rapidly growing interest in racquet sports—pickleball, tennis, padel, and more. Rob and Senior Editor Phil Keren also discussed some innovative projects and events happening at golf courses around the country. Canal Shores golf course in Evanston, Ill. will now be known as The Evans at Canal Shores, offering a connection to the namesake of the Evans Scholars Foundation, Chick Evans. The new golf course will re-open in 2025 with an upgraded par-60, 18-hole golf course, youth development training center and Western Golf Association Caddie Academy. Evans attended high school in Evanston and became a great amateur golfer. Instead of turning professional, Evans worked with the Western Golf Association to use the earnings from his golf career to establish the Evans Scholars Foundation in 1930. Wanakah Country Club in Hamburg, N.Y. recently hosted its ninth annual golf marathon. This year's event teed off at 5:20 a.m. and included 28 players who played and walked 100 holes of golf in the one-day tournament. The event, known as “The Walk Fore Luca & Carly,” benefits Roswell Park's Courage of Carly Fund for programs supporting pediatric cancer patients and their families, and Live Like Luca, the Luca S. Calanni Foundation. A proposed short course at the Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn. and The Loop Golf Course in Chaska, Minn., showcase innovations that cater to diverse golfing needs and abilities. Stanwich Club's short course, named “The Cauldron,” offers a quicker game with about half the number of holes of a standard 18-hole course. This format is designed for those looking to improve their skills or enjoy a faster round of golf. The Loop Golf Course in Chaska, Minn. has emerged as a groundbreaking facility designed with wheelchair users in mind. This 9-hole, par-28 course, created through a partnership between the city of Chaska and Barrier Free Golf, eliminates traditional barriers such as sand traps and rough terrain to ensure accessibility for all players.

The story of a filthy and dangerous train ditch that became one of the swankiest addresses in the world -- Park Avenue. For over 100 years, a Park Avenue address meant wealth, glamour and the high life. The Fred Astaire version of the Irving Berlin classic "Puttin' on the Ritz" revised the lyrics to pay tribute to Park Avenue: "High hats and Arrow collars/White spats and lots of dollars/Spending every dime for a wonderful time."By the 1950s, the avenue was considered the backbone of New York City with corporations setting up glittering new office towers in the International Style -- the Lever House, the Seagram Building, even the Pan Am Building. But the foundation for all this wealth and success was, in actually, a train tunnel, originally operated by the New York Central Railroad. This street, formerly known as Fourth Avenue, was (and is) one of New York's primary traffic thoroughfares. For many decades, steam locomotives dominated life along the avenue, heading into and out of Cornelius Vanderbilt's Grand Central (first a depot, then a station, eventually a terminal). However train tracks running through a quickly growing city are neither safe nor conducive to prosperity. Eventually, the tracks were covered with beautiful flowers and trees, on traffic island malls which have gotten smaller over the years. By the 1910s this allowed for glamorous apartment buildings to rise, the homes of a new wealthy elite attracted to apartment living in the post-Gilded Age era. But that lifestyle was not quite made available to everyone. In this episode, Greg and Tom take you on a tour of the tunnels and viaducts that helped New York City to grow, creating billions of dollars of real estate in the process. STRING THEORY— Media, and most every brand in general, talks a lot about building and nurturing a community. Tribes, even. Finding one, inserting yourself into it, and then making your message an integral part of it. And what activity creates a more loyal community, than sports? If there is the ultimate niche audience, sports is it. It goes without saying that every sport has fans. And some lend themselves to something beyond fandom; they are lifestyles. And few magazines have built up a brand around a single sport and its audience and their lifestyle as much as Racquet. Launched with a Kickstarter campaign in 2016 by Caitlin Thompson, Racquet is a presence at major tennis events and has inserted itself into the lifestyle of tennis fans and players alike. The path has been rocky at times, but Thompson is clear about her aim to provide a “premium experience at a premium price,” as she told the Nieman Lab in an interview in 2017. Like any other media, Racquet will live and die based on a business plan, and it is quite possible that Racquet magazine is just a small part of a larger creative media agency, all centered around a global community. And while she is not loath to smash some volleys in the direction of the tennis establishment, she is doing this while also trying to recenter the entire community and become its new beating heart.Caitlin Thompson has much in common with the world's top tennis players: passion, drive, ambition—and a willingness to make … a racket. Miguel is now 36 years of age, and remains very much in the discussions at the slams as a top 75 doubles player. The former Texas Longhorn talks about his long career as a doubles specialist, what made that decision for him, and how he views the long history of Mexican tennis. We also get in to some of the ATP Player Council politics, namely how doubles gets more eyes (and money), where the ATP is on a domestic abuse policy, and whether Latin America will be getting a Masters Series event. In July 2021, Naomi Osaka—world number 1 women's tennis player—lit the Olympic Cauldron at the Tokyo Olympic Games. The half-Japanese, half-American, Black athlete was a symbol of a more complicated, more multiethnic Japan—and of the global nature of high-level sports. Osaka is now about to start her comeback, after taking some time off following the birth of her child. She's not just an athlete: She's a media entrepreneur, venture investor, and mental health advocate—with that latter label coming with difficult conversations about the wellbeing of high-performance athletes, and their obligations to the media. Just in time for her comeback tour, tennis writer Ben Rothenberg is here with a new biography of the tennis star: Naomi Osaka: Her Journey to Finding Her Power and Her Voice (Dutton, 2024). Ben Rothenberg is a sportswriter from Washington, D.C. who has covered Naomi Osaka around the world since she emerged onto the WTA Tour in 2014, both in print for The New York Times—for which he covered tennis from 2011-2022—and on his podcast, No Challenges Remaining. His longform writing has been published in outlets including Slate and Racquet. Aleks Kovacevic sat down with Mike before the Dallas Open to discuss finally hitting top 100 after his run through qualies and in to the 2nd round of the Australian Open. At the time of publish, Kova is back outside of the top 100, at 102, after losing some points from the Cleveland Challenger title one year ago. But hitting 85 was just one step on his journey.
