The Reds won the World Series 50 years ago in a classic highlighted by the amazing game six eventually won by the Red Sox on the foul-pole hitting HR by Carlton Fisk in the 12th inning. Prior to that, legend has it that Pete Rose said to Fisk  "Man, isn't this the most exciting game you've ever played in?”. Rose had a knack for being in the moment and enjoying this game called baseball more than maybe any player that ever lived. And Sports Illustrated rewarded him at the end of the year by naming him “Sportsman of the Year”. Rose was at the top of his game, beloved by not only fans of the Big Red Machine, but baseball fans everywhere. His popularity transcended the game, as he was an everyday man, who played the game the right way. His work ethic and daily grind were legendary and he resonated with a great amount of folks whose lives were built around that same dedication to whatever their profession was. He was the working mans idol. Everyone could relate to this kid who was born on the wrong side of Cincinnati and was now the king of the town.  A 44-game hitting streak in 1978 captured the attention of the nation before he left Cincy for Philly the following year, helping the Phils win a World Series in 1980… the 3rd and final championship of his career. He returned to the Reds as a player manager and in 1985 became the the game's all-time leader in hits before retiring as a player a year later with a still record of 4,256 knocks. And then it all came crumbling down. Keith O'Brien is also a kid from Cincinnati who grew up watching Rose in his latter years  and chronicled his entire life in his bestselling book, “Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose, and the Last Glory Days of Baseball.” It goes into great detail about Rose's humble beginnings, how he got the nickname Charlie Hustle from two of the game's greats, Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford, and how his prowess as one of the greatest players of all-time made him one of the game's most popular players of the 20th century. But O'Brien also did countless research into Rose's gambling addiction, the people that he associated with and the eventual suspension and expulsion from baseball. He joins us on POP to discuss at length in great passion how this man of the people who was adored by legions of fans everywhere would fall from grace, and end up on the outside of the Hall of Fame looking in… literally. It's a tragic tale of the American Dream going awry. A kid who had nothing but grit and determination turns himself into one of the greatest ballplayers of all-time, only to let his addiction to betting… and betting on the game he lived for...keep him away from the thing he loved most… baseball. At this time of the year it's nice to reflect on some of the good things that happened throughout the year, and just days ago the nominees for the 63rd Halberg Awards were announced. There have been some huge moments in sport this year - from world championships to domestic and international recognition, and the annual Halberg Awards nominations provide a snapshot of the breadth of Kiwi achievement. What's really cool to see is how track and field athletics, snow sports and a wonderfully mixed collection of other sports dominate the list of contenders for top honours. It's been a year where individuals have excelled and teams have done pretty well, but suffered from inconsistency. I'd like to thank Geordie Beamish, nominated for Sportsman of the Year, for providing us all with the best feel good moments of the year. At the World Athletic Championships in Tokyo he survived a fall in the 3000m steeplechase semi-final, during which a rival stood on his face, and still managed to come in second. I thought that was going to be my most viewed sports video of 2025 – but it was surpassed days later by watching Beamish in the final become the first New Zealander to ever win track gold at a world athletics championships. It still makes me smile just thinking about the end of that race. His ‘late kick' is a life lesson on finishing well. Along with the extraordinary talented Hamish Kerr, who had another stellar year, and the success of emerging superstar Sam Ruthe, we've seen a genuine resurgence in New Zealand athletics. Alpine and snowboarders are well represented among the finalists, thanks to elite performances on international circuits. Alpine ski racer Alice Robinson is on fire at present, and I'm told by those in the know that freeskiers Luca Harrington, nominated in the Sportsman of the Year category, and Finley Melville Ives, nominated in the Emerging category, are very much medal contenders heading into the Winter Olympics next year. But amongst all the highlights there's also some soul searching – or maybe CEO searching - that needs to be done in 2026. The resignations of three high-profile CEOs in major sports — New Zealand Rugby's Mark Robinson, Netball New Zealand's Jennie Wyllie, and New Zealand Cricket's Scott Weenink, mark a significant shake-up in national sporting leadership in 2025. Robinson's departure from NZ Rugby follows years of navigating commercial and structural change within the sport. In one of the biggest and messiest stories of the year, Wyllie's exit from Netball NZ has prompted calls for greater transparency, and reflection of both governance and performance, particularly in light of contentious decisions about coaching roles. And in Cricket, Weenink stepped down after public disputes over the sport's direction, especially regarding the future of domestic T20 formats - suggesting there are deep strategic disagreements about how the game should evolve in New Zealand. Clearly there's some uncertainty ahead for three of our biggest sporting codes, but these changes also bring opportunities, a chance for fresh vision and leadership and, hopefully, better entertainment and performances for fans. In this episode, conservationist and filmmaker Tom Opre sits down with Mark Sather, a longtime Montana sportsman and employee of the Sieben Livestock Company, to unpack one of the most volatile and misunderstood issues in Western conservation: access, entitlement, and responsibility. Raised hunting the Gates of the Mountains and the Bob Marshall, Sather brings a generational sportsman's perspective shaped by years working inside a large, wildlife-rich cattle operation. He speaks candidly about what happens when public wildlife, private land, federal agencies, state managers, and modern hunting technology collide—sometimes literally—with helicopters, drones, and rising tensions in the field. The conversation moves deep into block management, helicopter access to landlocked public ground, changing hunter behavior, and the real-world consequences ranchers face when gates are left open, cattle are displaced, and trust breaks down. Sather also explains how proactive management—cow elk harvests, hazing with drones, and collaboration with Fish & Game—can reduce conflict while still putting meat in freezers. This is not a theoretical discussion. It's a ground-level look at how conservation actually works—or fails—when emotion, politics, and entitlement replace humility, stewardship, and dialogue. Ray Thomas' recent decision to quit his high pressure role triggered a flood of tributes for the hugely popular media identity. Ray's many fans were pleased to learn he'll still be appearing on Sky Thoroughbred Central programmes “This Week Next Week” and “News Central” and intends to continue his long time hosting role on the Sunday morning edition of Sky Racing Radio's “Big Sports Breakfast”. Ray's passion for multiple sports was evident from an early age, but horse racing  prevailed when it was time for the aspiring journalist to settle on a career path. That career has been well documented, but I'd like to add my tribute to the many he's already received from colleagues and followers. He's our podcast guest this week. Ray begins by revisiting his final day in the Sydney Press Room, and the touching tribute accorded him in the Newscorp office a few days later. The popular journalist talks about the effects of his sudden departure from a very busy role. Ray talks about a 2023 health scare and the i decision to take stock of his hectic lifestyle.  He talks of his late father's career as an RAAF communications operator, a job that took him to several parts of the world. Young Raymond Grant was born during David Thomas' Hong Kong stint in the early 1960's.  Ray looks back on his dad's transfer to Perth where his love of sport began. His interest in horse racing was triggered by the deeds of two notable thoroughbred mares and one freakishly talented harness horse. Ray says one particular race call had an amazing impact on him. The multimedia personality looks back on his own participation in Aussie Rules and cricket  during those early years in WA. He talks of the decision to follow his father into the air force.  Ray acknowledges his elderly mother Marlene and siblings Tony and Stacey. He talks about his own nine year career with the RAAF. Ray takes us through the progression of roles with the Melbourne Herald Sun, the Sydney based Sportsman and finally his transition to Daily Telegraph Racing Editor, an appointment that came out of the blue. Ray takes us back to some of the biggest stories he covered from the mid nineties up to his recent retirement. From a media viewpoint some of them were veritable “bombshells”. The sixty one year old takes delight in revisiting the five races he rates as the most memorable he got to cover for Newscorp. Ray talks about the heartbreaking Friday afternoon in the Newscorp office when much loved Rugby League writer Peter Frilingos suffered a fatal heart attack at his desk. The legendary journalist was enormously thrilled when appointed to the Daily Telegraph team for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. To this day he savours memories of Cathy Freeman's dash for gold in the 400m. He was thrilled to have what he called “the best seat in the house”. Ian Thorpe's unforgettable final leg in the 4x100m relay remains another indelible memory. (Beat American Gary Hall Jnr who'd been making some idle threats in the media) Perhaps the major sporting event Ray enjoyed the most as a working journalist was the Wimbledon men's final of 2012 when Roger Federer won his seventh title at the All England Club. This was a bittersweet occasion for Ray whose father had passed away the previous year.  He's currently enjoying his new found role of grandfather to eighteen months old Charlotte. That role will soon be expanded. This is a lovely stroll down memory lane with a legend of the Australian racing media.

Turgenev often went hunting with him, engaged in conversation, and listened attentively to his stories about nature and rural life.One day, Turgenev's mother, Varvara Petrovna, learned that Andrey had taken the master's hunting rifle without permission. For this offense, she ordered him to be punished with corporal punishment, which was a common practice among landowners at the time. The young Turgenev was deeply troubled by such measures and insisted that humiliation and violence were unacceptable.He strongly opposed his mother's decision and declared that if the punishment were carried out, he would leave the estate. His protest had an effect.
