Nate Boyer is a bit of a renaissance man; he has worn many different hats. He's a former active-duty Green Beret, he's a world traveler, he's involved with philanthropy and started his own non-profit, he's a community leader, and he played in the NFL as a professional athlete with the Seattle Seahawks. Nate joined the US Army in 2005, where he earned the coveted Green Beret in December of 2006. What he did in the military is certainly enough for a podcast on its own, but what he did afterwards is also just as interesting. He finished up his tours in places like Afghanistan and Iraq, and then decided that he wanted to become a long snapper. He had a five-year career with the Texas Longhorns, learning and teaching himself how to become a long snapper by watching YouTube clips; he didn't even play football in high school. At his core, Nate is a dreamer. He is someone who puts his eyes on a vision and gets after it. It's this facet of him that led him to have an incredibly successful college career, winning numerous accolades and becoming an Academic All-American. He was also named the Big 12 Sportsman of the Year in 2012. This all led to him getting a shot to play in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks. With all of this amazing stuff in mind, what Nate is doing today is probably just as inspiring as his past. He has a new movie out called MVP that I highly recommend you check out, he has a non-profit that brings together vets and athletes as well, and he really loves to play at the intersection of different identities and different people. He is an adventurer as well, being someone who has accomplished such feats as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and going fly-fishing in Russia. He's also worked as a big brother mentor for children diagnosed with Autism.   Nate had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “Time is the most valuable asset” (7:25). “Imposter syndrome is actually very common in people who are quite accomplished [and] very hard working” (9:50). “I was always going upstream against the grain” (19:05). “I still feel lost sometimes today. We all do” (20:35). “Life is that constant battle of feeling like we belong and feeling like we matter” (22:10). “Forget all this noise and people telling you this is not the way; this is not the normal path. It doesn't matter. Carve your own path. Just go” (24:10). “If you just try and put yourself out there, that's more than most people will ever do” (24:30). “People want to help those who are willing to help” (25:00). “Having some structure in my life was a thing I didn't know I needed until it was happening, until it was instilled in me” (27:45). “I still resist conformity at all costs” (30:10). “The best leaders were [often] the ones that didn't want to be leaders” “As a leader, something I struggle with, and struggled with on this film, is trusting people to do their job and letting go of not only the result, but letting go of this constant fear that you're screwing it up, you're not doing the story justice…” (34:15). “If you're a creative person and you're not being allowed to create anything on your own [because you're being micromanaged], that's frustrating” (37:20). “I love intersections. And what I love even more than intersections are juxtapositions” (45:20). “That's the biggest takeaway I want for people walking away from the movie: at the end of the day, we are all human beings” (57:30). “We wear certain uniforms that often group us and label us in certain ways, and sometimes we adopt that label ourselves and we feel that that is our identity and who we are, but we're human beings just like you. All we want to do is feel like we belong back here at home” (57:45). “My identity is I'm a human being” (1:01:45). “I'm full of fault and I've failed way more than I've succeeded, and I'm going to keep failing forward” (1:03:00). “I want to be remembered as someone who just tried” (1:03:30). “We all dream at night, but I dream during the day more than most” (1:05:35).   Additionally, you can find the MVP (Merging Vets and Players) Organization website here. You can also find Nate on social media @NateBoyer37. Lastly, you can check out Nate's movie, MVP, on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and Video on Demand. Thank you so much to Nate for coming on the podcast! Recently ace cameraman and fabulous artist Jeremiah Bennett and I spent several days in Baja California, Mexico pursuing ghosts. Or so it seems. We were in Baja to film me hunting Baja blacktail deer, a subspecies of the Columbian blacktail found from Washington to the lower regions of California for an episode of "Trijicon's World of Sports Afield" which airs on Sportsman's Channel, but also for a segment for "A Sportsman's Life" our weekly digital tv show that airs on CarbonTV.com. We were told by our outfitter the blacktail subspecies were not overly plentiful, but he saw no reason to shoot a buck unless it was at least representative of the species..which to me meant we should see a couple of bucks during out 5-day hunt. I was also told upon my arrival to San Diego, CA, my rifle permit had not been procured, and I could wait for it be signed, which might take days, or use a borrowed rifle. Upon reaching camp we drove through some of the spectacular high desert terrain and vegetation that likely exists on Earth. Our camp was a comfortable cabin. The rifle handed me was an ancient bolt action, topped with a scope I did not recognize, and a hand full of full metal jacket bullet cartridges. The no rifle permit..should have keyed me to what to expect on the trip. In this episode Larry and cameraman, Jeremiah Bennett discuss their hunt, the ups and downs that turned a hunting trip in a long, no-deer, camping trip Learn more about your ad choices. I remember back when I would never hike, hunt, or camp solo. Now, I crave it! And you can too! Getting out and exploring by yourself, especially as a female, can be intimidating! Over the years I've talked to hundreds of women who would agree. In fact, one of the #1 things I hear is that ladies aren't confident enough to hike, run, walk, camp, hunt, etc. by themselves! To each of us, building confidence looks different, but here are a few tips that helped give me the boost I needed to do things solo. Small - short or close to home adventures. Plan - go when you have plenty of daylight, good weather, know your route. Especially important to know where you're going if you will be in areas without service. Prepare - take a pack with essentials, communication device, water, and sidearm (or some kind of pepper spray). Awareness - pay attention to where you are, be present, and don't let yourself get distracted. Also, limit using earbuds or headphones so that you can stay in tune with your surroundings. Communicate - always let SOMEONE know where you are heading and when you'll be back (and stick to that plan). Trust - listen to your instincts and trust your gut without giving into fear. Companion - take your favorite 4 legged friend or invite someone to come along. Maybe starting with a friend or two will be your gateway into more time outdoors! Louisiana is known as a "sportsmen's paradise" because of the abundant fish and game that make for good hunting and fishing. And that's created something of a culture – one, admittedly shared by many states in the south and the west—that loves to hunt and fish. All sports require organization. And specialty equipment. Football, for example, is arranged by leagues - from high school through the NFL - and requires pads and helmets. Tennis is typically centered on clubs, and requires balls and racquets. Hunting and fishing trips are most often arranged informally by friends, and require rifles, rods and reels. Stephanie's guests on Out to Lunch today are involved with updating the organization of hunting and fishing trips, and the sale of equipment required for hunting. Namely, firearms. Laurie Lipsey Aaronson is President and CEO of Lipsey's, the Baton Rouge-based company that has grown to become the largest firearms distributor to licensed firearms retailers in the country. Lipsey's was founded in the early 1950s as a wholesale hunting and fishing distributor named S&S Sporting Goods. Laurie's father, Richard Lipsey, changed the name when he and members of his family acquired the business in the 1970s and began to expand it. Today, Lipsey's leads the firearms industry in the collaboration and distribution of exclusive firearms. Lipsey's also sells silencers, short barrel rifles and accessories. Laurie - who by the way was one of our first ever guests on Out to Lunch Baton Rouge - grew up learning the business from her dad and became chairwoman and CEO in 1993. She also leads another family business, Haspel, which created the original seersucker suit in New Orleans in 1909 and now offers a vibrant collection of men's clothing and accessories that Laurie has helped expand and diversify.  Logan Meaux is founder and CEO of Mallard Bay, a platform for sportsmen looking to book hunting and fishing trips with reputable charters anywhere in the U.S. The platform is like an Airbnb for sportsmen seeking accommodations with real-time availability, secure payments, quality assurance, and help with arranging lodging and meals along with their guided hunts. Logan is a recent LSU graduate, who was inspired to create the platform after having a particularly difficult time booking a hunting trip for his dad's birthday. Logan got together with two friends, both then students at LSU, Joel Moreau and Wyatt Mallet, to create the company. They then put together a team of business and computer science students and alumni to help with development. They launched in early 2022. In the short time since then, Mallard Bay has won a pitch competition, attracted local and national publicity and have their platform up and running and attracting users nationwide. This is all pretty impressive for a first gig right out of college, but then Logan comes by it naturally. His dad is Chris Meaux, founder of Lousiana's extraordinarily successful startup, Waitr, currently known as ASAP. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. The 260 Journey
What Happens After We Die?

The 260 Journey

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 26, 2022 5:38

Day 213 Today's Reading: Hebrews 9 I was speaking to a major league baseball player once who was struggling with the idea of death. I told him, here is your anxiety about death, starting with the least and moving to the greatest anxiety: • The unlived life. You didn't do your bucket list—so many things you wish you would have done. You start to realize what you didn't do and how much time you wasted. • The regretful past. This is going backward and wishing you could take back words and actions. You wish you would have let more things go, apologized more, spent more time with your kids and your family. • The gnawing possibility of accountability. This causes the greatest anxiety. It is the eternity issue. Is there a heaven and hell? Am I accountable? Will God judge me? If so, how will God judge me? The first two on that list deal with mortality. The final item on that list deals with immortality. Is there something after death? That causes people's anxiety to grow as they think, “Before I was only anxious about my last years on earth, but now I'm anxious about what is beyond and forever.” We can brush off dreams unrealized. We can even brush off the stupid stuff we did that we wish we could take back. But eternity is different. Eternity keeps talking to us. And today's chapter gives us a sobering reality check on it: “Every human being is appointed to die once, and then to face God's judgment” (Hebrews 9:27, TPT). Everyone will stand before God, either as our Judge or as our Redeemer. His role is determined by the choice we make on earth. When CNN cancelled Larry King's interview show in 2010, King began obsessing with his death, becoming aware that there will come a day when he dies. But he doesn't believe in the afterlife, so each day he started taking four hormone pills for human growth, and made plans to have his body frozen so that someday he will live again. He admits he knows “it's nuts," but at least he believes when he dies the potential of him being resurrected someday thanks to cryonics gives him some hope. Larry King says, “Other people have no hope.” Our hope is not in extending life here but extending life on the other side in heaven. Larry King is trying to extend the wrong way. What he fails to understand is that eternity is too long to be wrong. There's another who doesn't want to face eternity. In The Last Word, Thomas Nagel, professor of philosophy at New York University and an atheist, admits he doesn't want there to be a God: “I speak from experience, being strongly subject to this fear myself: I want atheism to be true and am made uneasy by the fact that some of the most intelligent and well-informed people I know are religious believers. It isn't just that I don't believe in God and, naturally, hope that I'm right in my belief. It's that I hope there is no God! I don't want there to be a God; I don't want the universe to be like that.” Those words are raw and honest, and I appreciate the professor's candor. But again, eternity is too long to be wrong. In 1974 Muhammad Ali was set to box against George Foreman for the Heavyweight Champion title. While he was training, a father and his son, Jimmy, came to Ali's training camp, because he wanted to meet the Champ. When Ali discovered Jimmy was battling leukemia, he told him, “I'm going to beat George Foreman, and you're going to beat cancer.” Two weeks later, Ali visited the boy, who was dying. Ali told him, “Jimmy, remember what I told you? I'm going to beat George Foreman. You're going to beat cancer.” “No, Muhammad,” Jimmy answered. “I'm going to meet God. I'm going to tell Him, you're my friend.” Ali's kindness and name recognition throughout the world has always impressed me. But on the day of judgment, we can't count on name-dropping. The only name that will matter on that day is the name of Jesus. Even the Sportsman of the Century will stand before the true “The Greatest” and bow down. Paul reminds us that “God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus, EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth” (Philippians 2:9-10). What will you tell God when you meet Him? Can you honestly say when you do, “I know Jesus?" The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:10 that “we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad” (NIV). How can we be prepared for death? We need to remember that death starts eternity. So as C. S. Lewis reminds us, “Precisely because we cannot predict the moment, we must be ready at all moments.” The saying goes like this: “Never fall in love with anything that can't go to heaven with you. The more important a matter is, the less you should postpone it. So claim the gift of eternal life immediately.” Eternal life is a decision—one that cannot be delegated, and one that has a deadline. Today is the day of salvation.
