"¿Cuántos más de nosotros tendremos que morir para que el Estado actúe?". Con esa pregunta, Reporteros Sin Fronteras y más de 40 medios mexicanos interpelaron al gobierno mexicano de Claudia Sheinbaum y al conjunto de autoridades para reclamar una respuesta frente a los asesinatos de periodistas y la impunidad que rodea estos crímenes en el país, el más peligroso para la prensa en América Latina. En una movilización inédita, medios nacionales y locales publicaron simultáneamente esa pregunta, acompañada de la lista con el nombre de los periodistas asesinados en México de fondo. A través de esta campaña, Reporteros Sin Fronteras (RSF) y los medios participantes exigen al Estado una respuesta a esta violencia que, insisten, no puede convertirse en la norma.  La situación es crítica, como explica a Radio Francia Internacional Artur Romeu, director de RSF en América Latina. "México es, de lejos, el país donde más periodistas son asesinados en América Latina. Es un problema crónico, no es de hoy. Es un problema histórico. Pero este año ya tuvimos siete periodistas asesinados en tan solo siete meses", afirma. En total, 17 periodistas fueron asesinados desde el inicio de la presidencia de Claudia Sheinbaum en octubre de 2024. Según Romeu, casi el 70% de las muertes se concentran en cinco estados: Veracruz, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca y Tamaulipas. Las principales víctimas son periodistas locales, que cubren temas políticos, policiales, judiciales o de corrupción. "Los periodistas son sistemáticamente blanco de estos ataques. Son ejecuciones extrajudiciales. En el 95% de los casos no se trata de periodistas que estaban cubriendo algo en el ejercicio de sus funciones, como alguien que cubriría una zona de guerra. No. En México, esos periodistas son blancos claros de grupos criminales que muchas veces tienen vínculos con agentes públicos" - Artur Romeu, director de Reporteros Sin Fronteras en América Latina Esta violencia tiene un "impacto brutal" en la libertad de prensa, generando desiertos informativos en vastas zonas del país, además de autocensura entre los periodistas. Un clima del que da testimonio Armando Ríos, periodista de investigación en Vanguardia MX, un diario del norteño estado de Coahuila que participó de la iniciativa. "En Coahuila, la violencia que en algún momento hemos visto doblega la libertad de expresión. Algunos medios locales han optado por actuar más como relacionistas públicos de los gobiernos de turno, locales sobre todo, pero municipales también", sostiene. "También en los estados hay poderes, hay gobiernos diferentes y hay gente que debería, si no de garantizarlo, por lo menos generar las condiciones para que exista un verdadero ejercicio de la libertad de expresión auténtico y confiable", considera el periodista, quien recibió amenazas en el pasado. Por eso, RSF y los diversos medios exigen al Gobierno mexicano poner en marcha un plan nacional de emergencia que coordine a los distintos niveles de la administración y refuerce las medidas de protección y las investigaciones. También reclaman identificar y sancionar tanto a los autores materiales como a los responsables intelectuales de los asesinatos, además de establecer mecanismos para evaluar las deficiencias en prevención, protección e investigación con el fin de evitar que se repitan.
