Most Christians agree that Christmas is all about Jesus, yet most of us spend little time preparing our hearts to celebrate Him. Why is this? Partly because we don't know how. In Unwrapping the Names of Jesus, Asheritah Ciuciu leads readers through the four weeks of Advent (Hope, Preparation, Joy, and Love). Each week: Begins with an interactive family devotional that equips readers to celebrate Advent together  Offers five daily reflections that focus on that week's name of Jesus Includes suggestions for fun-filled family activities or service projects  This devotional can be used by readers in their own personal worship times or as a tool to engage in family worship during the busy holiday season. Either way, participants will gain a greater sense of awe and wonder at who Jesus is. By focusing on the person and character of Jesus throughout the Advent season, readers will prepare their hearts so that when they admire the live nativity, sit in the candlelight service, or wake up on Christian morning, they can join the faithful who sing from the bottom of their hearts, "O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!" Asheritah is an author and speaker, wife and mama, and  founder of One Thing Alone Ministries—an online ministry that helps overwhelmed women find joy in Jesus. How to Understand the Bible in 30 Minutes

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 20, 2022 17:24

We know about the Bible. We may know some Bible stories, or maybe we've even read large portions for ourselves. But what it's really all about? How do all the different pieces fit together? Without a sense of the big story the Bible is telling, we'll miss out on the good news God has for us. In The 30-Minute Bible, experienced Bible teachers Craig Bartholomew and Paige Vanosky present the story of Scripture in thirty short readings, each designed to take about half an hour. Each includes a passage from the Bible and a short chapter explaining how the passage fits into the Bible's wider narrative. Written in straightforward and clear language, the readings are accompanied by Brother Martin Erspamer's lovely illustrations. Discover the timeless story of the Bible—in thirty minutes a day for thirty days. If you think the Bible is overwhelming. Almost anyone who has tried to read the Bible from the beginning will agree that it can be overwhelming. From the very first pages a myriad of questions arise, and though the most determined readers continue on, it is likely they soon become frustrated and return the book to the shelf. If you have questions. Many readers wonder why the Bible has remained a valuable book to so many over thousands of years. Others wonder how familiar Bible stories fit together. Still others want to know the truth about God and Jesus, or about their purpose in life. Can an easily accessible source be found? The 30-Minute Bible may be for you. Experienced Bible teachers Craig Bartholomew and Paige Vanosky open readers up to the story found within the Bible, providing just enough understanding that even the most novice readers can make sense of it. By reading this summary of the Bible on your own, or together with friends, the answers to your many questions will begin to emerge. These questions are big - about the Bible, God, Jesus and life, and so are the answers. They cannot be completely answered overnight. But this book is a wonderful way to begin your journey into discovering answers and to becoming familiar with the Bible, enabling you to read enjoy reading the Bible on your own. Just what is found in the Bible? Many know the Bible as literature, as a place to discover rules for living, or as a place to learn about God and his word to us. It is also known as the story of Jesus, how he lived his life and the impact he made on those around him. There are many ways to describe the Bible and its meaning to those who treasure it. All of these and many more are true. One of the most unknown, surprising ways to describe the Bible is as a story of our world - from creation to to the end of the world as we know it. Along the way the story follows one branch of a family tree leading from Adam and Eve to Jesus, almost all written by or about the main characters in the story. But what makes this story particularly fascinating is that although it was written by over 40 authors over a period of about 1400 years, there are remarkably consistent themes throughout. You will discover this and so much more in reading The 30-Minute Bible. When you finish this book, you will likely understand why the Bible is often called “the greatest story ever told”! Paige P. Vanosky is a small group leader and community volunteer. The 30-Minute Bible grew out of her own teaching ministry. She lives in Rancho Santa Fe, California.Craig G. Bartholomew is director of the Kirby Laing Centre for Public Theology in Cambridge, UK. He has written and edited numerous books, including Contours of the Kuyperian Tradition, Introducing Biblical Hermeneutics, Beyond the Modern Age (with Bob Goudzwaard), The Drama of Scripture (with Michael Goheen), The Doctrine of Creation (with Bruce Ashford), and a commentary on Ecclesiastes.

In order to understand, appreciate, and faithfully preach the word of God, pastors must discern the literary nature of the Bible. Instead of just acknowledging the various genres of Scripture, pastors and teachers should allow these genres to influence how the text is approached and communicated. In The Beauty and Power of Biblical Exposition, they will learn how to both read and preach the Bible as a literary anthology.  To accomplish this, Douglas Sean O'Donnell and Leland Ryken teach pastors how to faithfully preach while keeping the original authors' intentions in mind, helping them grow in their craft and love for God's word. They explain how to read 6 genres―including narratives, parables, epistles, poetry, proverbs, and visionary writings―for the purpose of captivating congregations with the richness of Scripture.Written for Pastors: Especially young pastors or those just out of seminary Practical: Contains guides, tables, and examples to help develop sermonsHeartfelt: Written with the desire for pastors to learn and grow as communicators Douglas Sean O'Donnell (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is the senior vice president of Bible editorial at Crossway. How Do Christians Exercise Privilege in the World?

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 1, 2022 21:21

While preparing the way for the Lord, John the Baptist declares, "Produce fruit in keeping with repentance." Many have failed to do this, in part, because repentance has become diluted. Rather than truly turning away from sin--back to God--we often equate repentance with a mere oral confession. This domesticated, unbiblical understanding of repentance bears no fruit and lacks the power to transform broken people, relationships, systems, and structures. Our lack of repentance conforms us to the patterns of this world, keeping us content amid sinful inequities, complicit with systemic injustice, and apathetic in oppressive context. Privilege is largely a social consequence of our unwillingness to reckon with and turn from sin. Scripture repeatedly affirms that privilege is real and declares that, rather than exploiting it for selfish gain or feeling immobilized by it, Christians have an opportunity to steward privilege and a responsibility to leverage it to further the kingdom and sacrificially love our neighbors. In Subversive Witness, read how Dominique DuBois Gilliard... x highlights biblical examples of privileged people who understood this kingdom call x casts a new vision for faithful participation in the inbreaking kingdom as co-laborers with Christ x leads the church to grapple with privilege, indifference, and systemic sin in new ways x uses Scripture to elucidate how privilege emerges from sin, is sustained by our hardened hearts, and keeps us complicit with oppression x demonstrates that Christians can wield privilege as an instrument to pursue justice and further the Kingdom x details Scripture's subversive call to leverage, and at times forsake, privilege to sacrificially love our neighbors, enact systemic change, and advance the kingdom of God Dominique DuBois Gilliard is the Director of Racial Righteousness and Reconciliation for the Love Mercy Do Justice (LMDJ) initiative of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC). He is the author of Rethinking Incarceration: Advocating for Justice that Restores, which won the 2018 Book of the Year Award for InterVarsity Press. Gilliard also serves on the board of directors for the Christian Community Development Association and Evangelicals for Justice. In 2015, he was selected as one of the ECC's “40 Under 40” leaders to watch, and the Huffington Post named him one of the “Black Christian Leaders Changing the World.” An ordained minister, Gilliard has served in pastoral ministry in Atlanta, Chicago, and Oakland. He was executive pastor of New Hope Covenant Church in Oakland, California and also served in Oakland as the associate pastor of Convergence Covenant Church. He was also a campus minister at North Park University and the racial righteousness director for ECC's ministry initiatives in the Pacific Southwest Conference. Gilliard earned a bachelor's degree in African American Studies from Georgia State University and a master's degree in history from East Tennessee State University, with an emphasis on race, gender, and class in the United States. A Christian Answer to the Identity Angst of Our Culture. In the 21st-century West, identity is everything. Never has it been more important, culturally speaking, to know who you are and be true to yourself. Expressive individualism—the belief that looking inward is the way to find yourself—has become the primary approach to identity formation, and questioning anyone's “self-made self” is often considered a threat or attack. Prompted by his own crisis of identity, Brian Rosner argues that personal identity is formed not only by looking inward, but also by looking around to your relationships, backward and forward to your life stories, and upward to God. In How to Find Yourself, Rosner equips readers to engage sympathetically with some of the most pressing questions of our day. Challenging the status quo, he offers an approach to identity formation that leads to more secure and joyful self-knowledge: being known intimately and personally by God and following the script of Jesus life story. The market is flooded with books, conferences, and workshops on how to be a better leader. In most companies, leaders are noticed and applauded while followers are often viewed as weak and passive. However, Scripture tells us a different story; although leadership is valued and respected, being obedient followers of Christ is at the very heart of faith.   In The Call to Follow, Richard Langer and Joanne J. Jung teach readers that “followership” is essential to both organizational and spiritual flourishing. They argue that followership requires the development of specific skills and virtues modeled and extolled throughout Scripture. They point to examples of people from the Bible and church history who focused on following in the footsteps of their Savior rather than positions of leadership among others. This helpful book seeks to dismantle the idol of leadership that's so prevalent in our culture and points us instead to the biblical concept of followership.  Biblically Centered: Contains examples of “followership” from Scripture and church history Mission Oriented: Explains how being a follower of Jesus Christ is a missional callingCommunity Focused: Written to encourage Christ followers, in both leadership and followership positionsRichard Langer (PhD, University of California, Riverside) is a professor of biblical and theological studies and director of the Office for the Integration of Faith and Learning at Biola University. Gain a deep understanding of audio practice and theory with this easy-to-read book, illustrated with more than 400 figures and photographs. Using common sense, plain-English explanations and minimal math, author Ethan Winer helps you understand audio at the deepest, most technical level-no engineering degree necessary. If you're an intermediate to advanced recording engineer or audiophile, you already know the basic mechanics of how audio "works." This book will take you beyond that, weaving together audio concepts, theories of aural perception and acoustics, musical instrument physics, and basic electronics and demonstrating their relationships to one another. Rather than merely showing you how to use audio devices like equalizers and compressors, Winer explains how they work internally and how they are spec'd and tested. With The Audio Expert, you get: * Videos and audio examples on the companion website (www.TheAudioExpertBook.com) that help you understand complex topics, such as vibration and resonance * Platform agnostic explanations, applying to Windows and Mac operating systems, and to most software and hardware * Practical tips, tricks, advice, and lots of myth-busting Bonus chapters are currently available on FocalPress.com. http://www.focalpress.com/books/audio/the_audio_expert.aspx?terms=Audio+Expert * Explains clearly the innermost details of audio hardware and software * Contains numerous practical tips, tricks, advice, and lots of myth-busting * Provides videos and audio examples on the companion website for comprehensive understanding. This book goes beyond merely explaining how audio works. It brings together the concepts of audio, aural perception, musical instrument physics, acoustics, and basic electronics, showing how they're intimately related. It also describes in great detail many related practices and techniques used by recording and mixing engineers, including video production and computers. This book is meant for intermediate to advanced recording engineers and audiophiles who want to become experts. It's definitely not a "Dummies" type book for beginners, though there's plenty for beginners too. One unique feature is explaining how audio devices such as equalizers, compressors, and A/D converters work internally, and how they're spec'd and tested, rather than merely describing how to use them. This book is also unique because it includes much original research, such as methods to test the audibility of distortion and other artifacts using your own listening system, while explaining why many common home-made tests are not valid. It also addresses the perennial "measuring versus listening" and "subjectivist versus objectivist" debates head on, and resolves them using science, logic, and hard proof. There's plenty of myth-busting and consumerism too. Indeed, truly understanding how audio gear works leads to smarter buying. So while I won't tell readers what brand power amplifier to buy, I explain in great detail what defines a good amplifier, so people can choose a first-rate model wisely without over-paying. Most explanations throughout the book are platform-agnostic, applying equally to Windows and Mac computers, and to most software and hardware. Many audio and video examples are included to better present complex topics such as vibration and resonance. Other videos demonstrate editing techniques and audio processing, plus several video interviews with skilled musicians demonstrating their instruments and playing techniques. In the piano video, a professional piano technician disassembles a $100,000 Steinway grand to show how it works! Of course, there's also a comprehensive Acoustics section, bringing together much of my writings from past years into one coherent reference, along with a wealth of new information. There's literally nothing else like this book. Visit Ethan's website at https://ethanwiner.com/book.htm

How a Jewish Movement Turned Into the Early Church

How is it that a first-generation Jewish messianic movement undertook a mission to the pagan world and rapidly achieved a momentum that would have a lasting impact on world history? In this monumental two-volume study, Eckhard Schnabel provides a unified and detailed picture of the rise and growth of early Christian mission. He begins with a search for a missionary impulse in the Old Testament and Second Temple Judaism and then weighs the evidence for a mission of Jesus to Gentiles. But the center of focus is the apostolic missionary activity as it is related in Acts, Paul's letters, and the rest of the New Testament. This study seeks to describe all the evidence relevant to the missionary strategy and expansion of the early church, to explain the theological dimensions of the early Christian mission, and to integrate numerous studies published in recent decades into a synthetic picture. Schnabel's detailed analysis will form a solid basis for a new understanding of the rise of Christianity and the nature of Christian mission—both then and now. Eckhard J. Schnabel (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is Mary F. Rockefeller Distinguished Professor of New Testament Studies at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He has taught previously at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Deerfield, Illinois), Freie Theologische Akademie (Giessen, Germany), Wiedenest Bible College (Bergneustadt, Germany), and Asian Theological Seminary (Manila, Philippines). His books include Early Christian Mission (volumes 1 & 2), Paul the Missionary, and Der erste Brief des Paulus an die Korinther. He is the author of numerous articles, including "Luke" (with David W. With A Jesus Christmas, you can explore God's amazing plan for Christmas with this family devotional for Advent. This Advent devotional offers an exciting and fresh way for your family to prepare for Christmas. Right from the beginning, the serpent lied to Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden – and he has been lying ever since. But right from the beginning, God told us his amazing plan to send Jesus. Each of the 25 readings looks at one of the serpent's lies from Genesis 3, and then shows how the glorious truth of Christmas beats it every time! There is even space for each family member to make their own notes. So get each family member a copy of A Jesus Christmas and a Bible, and find ten minutes a day in December to look at God's word together and dwell on the good news of Christmas. A Better Than Anything Christmas is the second Advent devotional for families from Barbara Reaoch, author of the very popular A Jesus Christmas. These daily devotions in the Gospels give a thorough investigation of why Jesus came. In the lead-up to Christmas, families will explore 25 reasons why Jesus came, and they will see that what Jesus gives us is better than anything else we could wish for. Each day there is a passage to read together, questions to think about, an explanation and a prayer. There are also age-appropriate application questions, some for younger children and some for older children, as well as journaling space so that each family member can write or draw their own response to what God has shown them. So why not set aside a little time each day in the run up to Christmas to look at God's word together with this inspiring and innovative resource? "Nothing thrills me more than to see the great truths of the gospel change kids lives. I love to give adults tools to disciple the next generation. I want every parent and teacher to know that God's Word has power to enable their children to discover the joy of loving God." Teaching cross-culturally changed Barbara's perspective. She says, "Living overseas I learned in a new way that God's Word can reach children in every situation. No matter what reasons people think they cannot disciple their children - they can! I've seen the power of God's Word help children around the world — from Africa to Asia, India to the Alps, poor or rich. Whatever the challenge - God has given parents the privilege and power to reach their children with the transforming truth of his Word." Barbara and her husband lived in Michigan before moving to Cape Town, South Africa, to teach Bible Study Fellowship classes. They also worked with the Rafiki Foundation to train young women in job and life skills. With her grandchildren far away, Barbara began to write Bible studies for them to bridge the distance. She drew her first two books, “Why Easter” and “Why Christmas" from those studies. Barbara's most recent book is “A Better Than Anything Christmas.” After returning to the US, Barbara directed the Children's Division of Bible Study Fellowship International.  Barbara now lives in Minneapolis, MN, where she is learning to love snow again! She and her family are privileged to be a part of the amazing body of believers at Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Three things: We bust the myths surrounding good posture, pain, muscular tightness, and how to approach them from a scientific standpoint.Instead of a cookie-cutter routine, we'll show you how to select the right exercises for your own needs.Since even the best routine is useless if you don't actually do it, we'll show you how to integrate better movement habits during the other 23.5 hours of the day. Written by two physical therapists who have worked with thousands of people around the world, Overcoming Poor Posture is based on one simple idea: there is no such thing as perfect posture. No two bodies are alike, and we'll teach you how to find your own best alignment so you can live each day in health and comfort while performing your best in all the activities that matter to you. Instead of a painful issue to fix, you'll learn to think of your postural alignment as a dynamic component of how you sit, stand, and move in your body. Inside, you'll find: Practical, real-life explanations about the factors that have shaped your posture, the link between poor posture and pain, and how your posture impacts lifestyle.Clear pictures demonstrating exercises for alignment, mobility, strength, and motor patterning, all with detailed instructions.Tips for making a habit of better posture throughout your day.Instruction for choosing the right exercises and structuring a routine that fits your body and goals. An appendix with sample programs you can use to get started right away. Put it all together, and you've got a systematic approach to refining your posture for better health and performance in everything you do. If you're already aware of many of the different exercises for posture, many of the exercises may be familiar to you. However, we teach and show you to put them together coherently with progression to work toward specific goals instead of just throwing them at your body hoping they will work. Buy Overcoming Poor Posture on Amazon today. I approached GMB earlier this year about this project because there are a lot of myths surrounding good posture, bad posture, pain, muscular tightness, and a lot of other things that contribute to posture, alignment and overall well being. I though it would be a good fit to work with them because they're all about not just posture but overall movement and wellness, especially from a bodyweight fitness perspective. Overall, our goal was to approach posture from a scientific and practical perspective as both Jarlo and I are physical therapists. We took a look at what the science says about posture, pain, tightness and different factors, and we distilled it into information that everyone can understand. From there we combined the science with an approach which integrates flexibility, mobility, stability, and strength training to help you systematically refine your posture for health and performance as you need to. There are no “set routines” in our book as there is no one perfect posture or alignment for everyone. Instead, we chose to go the route of teaching you the concepts and introducing sample plans so that you have the knowledge to utilize the exercises in the book (and even those we didn't include in the book) for your body as you need them. I hope you enjoy the book! Steve

This is the book that people tell their friends about, that trainers suggest for virtually every sport and activity, and that medical professionals recommend to people just starting to get back in shape. Stretching first appeared in 1980 as a new generation of Americans became committed to running, cycling, aerobic training, and workouts in the gym — all of which are commonplace now. It features stretching routines specific to a variety of people, including sports enthusiasts, travelers, children, gardeners, and people in wheelchairs. There is also an abbreviated version of each routine for people in a hurry, new information on the stretching vs. warming up debate, and new and improved drawings. This 30th anniversary edition features two-color inks to better define the muscle groups helped by each stretching exercise. A new section focuses on office fitness exercises, helpful for both home and office computer users. Bob Anderson was born in 1945 in Fullerton, California and is a graduate of California State University at Long Beach, with a lifetime teaching credential in physical education. He has taught stretching to the Denver Broncos, the New York Jets, the California Angels, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Lakers; set up stretching programs for the football teams at Southern Methodist University, University of California at Berkeley, Washington State University and the University of Nebraska; has taught emotionally and physically handicapped children; worked with executives at the North American Rockwell Space Division; taught professional rodeo riders, as well as swimmers, cyclists, weight lifters, tennis, racquetball, handball, and volleyball players. He has also worked with members of the U.S. Olympic Ski and Figure Skating teams, and for the last seven years has taught stretching at the Pikes Peak High Altitude Running Camp in Colorado. In 1968, at the age of 23, Bob began a personal physical fitness program, since he felt he was overweight and out of shape. He changed his diet, started eating less, and began running and cycling. His weight went from 190 to 135 pounds over a period of time, and he soon was in much better physical condition. One day, while in a conditioning class in college, he discovered he could not reach much past his knees in a straight legged sitting position. After discovering how tight he was, Bob started stretching. In several months he became much more limber; he found that stretching made running, cycling and other activities easier and more enjoyable and that it eliminated most of the muscular soreness that usually accompanies strenuous physical exertion. After several years of exercising and stretching with Jean and a small group of friends, Bob gradually developed a method of stretching that could be taught to anyone. Soon, he was teaching his technique to others. He began working with professional teams, then college teams, other amateur athletes, and with a variety of people at sports medicine clinics, racquetball clubs, athletic clubs and running stores throughout the country. Bob and Jean first published their book Stretching in 1975 and in four years sold over 35,000 copies by mail. Articles on their stretching techniques have appeared in The Runner, Runner's World, Powder: The Skier's Magazine, Swim-Swim, Down River, Esquire, Playboy, Organic Gardening, House and Garden, Glamour, and Vogue. Bob's public appearances created such a demand for information on stretching (8,000 letters received after his first appearance on “The Today Show”) that in 1979–80 this revised version of the book was published. Bob has recently toured Japan and Germany, conducting stretching workshops. Stretching has been translated into 19 foreign languages, and has sold over 3 million copies. A second major revision was published in July 2000, with over 1000 new drawings by Jean Anderson. Jean Anderson was born in 1945 in Long Beach, California and has a B.A.

Ergo21's website slogan reads, “Comfort. Joy. Happiness.” It's a fitting description for the company's product, the Ergo21 Extreme Comfort Seat Cushion, which uses advanced LiquiCell Technology to help customers sit hours and hours without aches or soreness. Company president Steve Gambhir used to drive four to six hours a day in LA traffic setting up merchant credit card processing accounts. “I tried using a different cushion every month to relieve the back pain from long hours in the car,” Steve recalls. “Finally, my wife said, ‘Why don't you design your own cushion?' so I did.” LiquiCell: – reduces the stretching and tearing of the soft tissues, thereby improving blood flow. – does not interfere with the individual's positioning or stability. – is thinner, lighter, more flexible, and more durable than gel, foam, or air. – provides unsurpassed long-term comfort to improve quality of life. LiquiCell Technology strategically places low viscosity fluid inside the cushions' ultra-thin cells to reduce discomfort associated with prolonged contact between the body and an object. The liquid stays in constant motion, letting the body glide and float. This provides instant comfort, reduces numbness and improves circulation by 150 percent. “We've had countless reviews on Amazon from people who sit for long periods in office chairs or wheelchairs,” explains Steve. “These customers report that their sores went away and they can now sit for hours without any discomfort.” Since LiquiCell performs better than gel, foam or air, it's even being used in hospital beds to prevent pressure sores and skin breakdown for patients who cannot move. Steve quickly discovered that one cushion size definitely wouldn't fit all. Ergo21's biggest challenge has been to accommodate all kinds of users and their different sizes, weights and needs, plus the seemingly endless variety of office and home chairs, car and truck seats, wheelchairs, patio chairs, and travel seats – all of which demand cushions of varying sizes and shapes. “We poured over thousands of marketplace reviews and cushion designs and every review we received for our own cushions,” says Steve. “I even called many Ergo21 users personally to see how we could improve our product line, and then it was back to the drawing board.” The result: Ergo21 now offers five cushions specifically designed for different applications. Each model reduces fatigue and helps with tail burn and buttock, hip, leg, and sciatica pain. Many of Steve's customers have tried 10 to 12 cushions before finding a Ergo21 solution, and they've contacted him about their success stories. One man who had injured his tailbone seven years ago and couldn't drive more than 10 minutes without pain called to say that the first time he tried the Sports Cushion, he drove 180 miles pain free. Ergo21 has recently introduced pillow cushion, mattress overlay and bike cushion. Another interesting fact: All Ergo21 seat cushions are proudly made in USA. Daredevil legend Bob Gill began as a motorcycle racer in 1962. Unsatisfied with the money he was making as a racer, he switched to jumping full-time in 1970. After several long jumps, including one jump 152 feet over the Cajun Canyon in Louisiana, he jumped over a set of Ryder trucks on May 10, 1973. The jump was filmed for a television commercial that was aired during Super Bowl VIII. On July 17, 1973, Bob set a world record jump of 171 feet (52 m) when he jumped over 22 cars with no landing ramp at Seattle International Raceway in Kent, WA. On August 18, 1974, Bob Gill was scheduled to attempt a world record jump over the 200-foot (61 m)-wide Appalachia Lake in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia. Heavy rains in the area forced the postponement of the jump to August 25. The jump was performed without the aid of a landing ramp. Why does happiness get harder in your 40s? Why do you feel in a slump when you're successful? Where does this malaise come from? And, most importantly, will it ever end? Drawing on cutting-edge research, award-winning journalist Jonathan Rauch answers all these questions. He shows that from our 20s into our 40s, happiness follows a U-shaped trajectory, a “happiness curve,” declining from the optimism of youth into what's often a long, low slump in middle age, before starting to rise again in our 50s. This isn't a midlife crisis, though. Rauch reveals that this slump is instead a natural stage of life―and an essential one. By shifting priorities away from competition and toward compassion, it equips you with new tools for wisdom and gratitude to win the third period of life. And Rauch can testify to this personally because it was his own slump, despite acclaim as a journalist and commentator that compelled him to investigate the happiness curve. His own story and the stories of many others from all walks of life―from a steelworker and a limo driver to a telecoms executive and a philanthropist―show how the ordeal of midlife malaise reboots our values and even our brains for a rebirth of gratitude. Full of insights and data and featuring many ways to endure the slump and avoid its perils and traps, The Happiness Curve doesn't just show you the dark forest of midlife, it helps you find a path through the trees. It also demonstrates how we can―and why we must―do more to help each other through the woods. Midlife is a journey we mustn't walk alone. In 2018, he published The Happiness Curve: Why Life Gets Better After 50, a lauded account of the surprising relationship between aging and happiness. In his 1994 book Demosclerosis—revised and republished in 2000 as Government's End: Why Washington Stopped Working—he argues that America's government is becoming gradually less flexible and effective with time, and suggests ways to treat the malady. His 1993 book Kindly Inquisitors: The New Attacks on Free Thought (published by the University of Chicago Press; expanded in 2013) defends free speech and robust criticism, even when it is racist or sexist and even when it hurts. Once you understand how these immature people function, you will no longer feel guilty or ashamed for not helping them more. You will learn how to reconnect with your true self while interacting with others in ways that keep you from being emotionally drained.  This book has been an Amazon bestseller and has been translated into thirteen languages. With the recent publication of my latest book, Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, I have answered a question that has intrigued me for years: why do so many psychotherapy clients seem so much more together and self-aware than their family members? In other words, why are the least problematic people the ones seeking treatment? Realizing that many of my clients' family members were highly emotionally immature, I set out to explore and explain their destructive interactions in a way that could free people to live their own best lives without being worn out by these draining personalities. By understanding our loved ones' emotional immaturity, we can regain our trust in ourselves and get free from the destructive and confusing effects of early programming from childhood.             In my previous book, Who You Were Meant To Be, I focused on how people can reconnect with their true self and sense of purpose. I have devoted my professional life to helping people learn how to rely on their own emotional guidance, strengthen their self-awareness, and increase their energy for full living.             After obtaining two graduate degrees in clinical psychology – a Master's degree from Central Michigan University, and a Doctorate of Psychology from the Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology – I became licensed as a clinical psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. For many years I was also an Assistant Adjunct Professor for the College of William and Mary and Old Dominion University, teaching classes of doctoral students in the Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology. I have specialized in adult psychotherapy and personal growth counseling, as well as doing years of intensive personality and intellectual testing. In-depth psychodynamic training helped me understand people's problems from a developmental perspective, leading to my livelong fascination with the striking differences between adults in their levels of psychological maturity.             I came to clinical psychology from a background in art and literature, fascinated by all aspects of human creativity and conflict. Beginning in college as a studio art major, I then briefly switched to psychology, where I was disappointed to find an emphasis on animal experimentation instead of understanding people. Seeking to explore human nature, I finally found what I was looking for in English literature, where human desire and motivation could be studied endlessly. Finally in my senior year, a developmental psychology class introduced me to the field of clinical psychology, providing the scientific fascination I had been seeking.

How to Pivot Toward What Matters

Life is not a problem to be solved. ACT shows how we can live full and meaningful lives by embracing our vulnerability and turning toward what hurts. In this landmark book, the originator and pioneering researcher into Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) lays out the psychological flexibility skills that make it one of the most powerful approaches research has yet to offer. These skills have been shown to help even where other approaches have failed. Science shows that they are useful in virtually every area - mental health (anxiety, depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, PTSD); physical health (chronic pain, dealing with diabetes, facing cancer); social processes (relationship issues, prejudice, stigma, domestic violence); and performance (sports, business, diet, exercise). How does psychological flexibility help? We struggle because the problem-solving mind tells us to run from what causes us fear and hurt. But we hurt where we care. If we run from a sense of vulnerability, we must also run from what we care about. By learning how to liberate ourselves, we can live with meaning and purpose, along with our pain when there is pain. Although that is a simple idea, it resists our instincts and programming. The flexibility skills counter those ingrained tendencies. They include noticing our thoughts with curiosity, opening to our emotions, attending to what is in the present, learning the art of perspective taking, discovering our deepest values, and building habits based around what we deeply want. Beginning with the epiphany Steven Hayes had during a panic attack, this audiobook is a powerful narrative of scientific discovery filled with moving stories as well as advice for how we can put flexibility skills to work immediately. Hayes shows how allowing ourselves to feel fully and think freely moves us toward commitment to what truly matters to us. Finally, we can live lives that reflect the qualities we choose. Steven C. Hayes is a Nevada Foundation Professor of Psychology in the Behavior Analysis program at the University of Nevada. An author of 47 books and nearly 670 scientific articles, his career has focused on an analysis of the nature of human language and cognition and the application of this to the understanding and alleviation of human suffering. He is the developer of Relational Frame Theory, an account of human higher cognition, and has guided its extension to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a popular evidence-based form of psychotherapy that uses mindfulness, acceptance, and values-based methods. He is a co-developer of Process-Based Therapy (PBT), a new approach to evidence-based therapies more generally. Dr. Hayes has been President of Division 25 of the APA, of the American Association of Applied and Preventive Psychology, the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy, and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science. He was the first Secretary-Treasurer of the Association for Psychological Science, which he helped form and has served a 5 year term on the National Advisory Council for Drug Abuse in the National Institutes of Health. He is a Fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science, and is on the Advisory Board of USERN, which represents scientists who are in the top 1% of their field. He is President of the Institute for Better Health, a 45 year old charitable organization dedicated to excellence in clinical training. In 1992 he was listed by the Institute for Scientific Information as the 30th “highest impact” psychologist in the world and Google Scholar data ranks him among the top 1,100 most cited scholars in all areas of study, living and dead (http://www.webometrics.info/en/node/58). The Handbook of Denominations in the United States has long been the gold standard for reference works about religious bodies in America. The purpose of this Handbook is to provide accurate and objective information about the most significant Christian traditions and denominations in the United States today. It contains descriptions of over 200 distinct Christian denominations as well as overviews of the several major Christian traditions to which they belong—based on shared historical and theological roots and commitments. The information for each denomination has been provided by the religious organizations themselves and focuses on the denominations' doctrines, statistics, and histories. The 14th edition is completely updated with current statistics, new denominations, and recent trends. The book has been made more useful and manageable by moving very small groups into broader articles while giving more detail and description to the large and influential denominations. Roger E. How to Better Understand Christian Psychology

How are Christians to understand and undertake the discipline of psychology? This question has been of keen interest (and sometimes concern) to Christians because of the importance we place on a correct understanding of human nature. Psychology can sometimes seem disconnected from, if not antithetical to, Christian perspectives on life. How are we to understand our Christian beliefs about persons in relation to secular psychological beliefs? This revised edition of a widely appreciated text now presents five models for understanding the relationship between psychology and Christianity. All the essays and responses have been reworked and updated with some new contributors including the addition of a new perspective, the transformative view from John Coe and Todd Hall (Biola University). Also found here is David Powlison (Westminster Theological Seminary) who offers the biblical counseling model. The levels-of-explanation model is advanced by David G. Myers (Hope College), while Stanton L. Jones (Wheaton College) offers an entirely new chapter presenting the integration model. The Christian psychology model is put forth by Robert C. Roberts (Baylor University) now joined by Paul J. Watson (University of Tennesee, Chattanooga). Each of the contributors responds to the other essayists, noting points of agreement as well as problems they see. Eric L. Johnson provides a revised introduction that describes the history of Christians and psychology, as well as a conclusion that considers what might unite the five views and how a reader might evaluate the relative strengths and weaknesses of each view. Psychology and Christianity: Five Views has become a standard introductory textbook for students and professors of Christian psychology. This revision promises to keep it so. Eric L. Johnson (PhD, Michigan State University) trained as an academic psychologist and is Lawrence and Charlotte Hoover Professor of Pastoral Care at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. How can I develop a team if they're not in the same place? How can I build a company culture that works for employees in an office, working at home and in co-work spaces? How can I maintain organizational oversight if I can't see my employees? Remote Work answers all these questions and more and provides guidance on how to build a successful remote working strategy that engages employees, allows them to perform to their full potential and improves business performance. The COVID-19 pandemic has put remote work into the business norm, but demand from employees to work remotely was already increasing, with a 2019 report stating that 34% of people surveyed would even take a pay cut if they could work remotely part of the time. HR professionals and business leaders need to address this demand to attract and retain the talent the business needs. Remote Work is written by two industry experts who have successfully transitioned their workforces to remote models. It provides essential guidance on how to implement policies, processes and strategies for remote working, including meeting types, measuring performance and creating virtual 'water cooler' environments. Featuring advice on technological solutions to adapting processes and driving engagement, this book also outlines the business benefits of a remote workforce including improved productivity and output and how it allows for faster expansion and execution. With insights from leading experts such as Marshall Goldsmith and case studies from Cornerstone OnDemand, Buffer and United States Marine Corps, Remote Work is essential reading now that increased home and flexible working is here to stay. Chris Dyer is the founder and CEO of PeopleG2, where he manages 30 full-time remote employees and 3,000 independent contractors. PeopleG2 is routinely ranked one of the best places to work and has been listed as one of Inc.'s 5000 Fastest Growing Companies. Having made the transition to remote during the recession in 2009 with stunning success, Chris Dyer is now a world-renowned expert on remote leadership and productive company culture. My company, PeopleG2, is routinely ranked one of the best places to work and has been listed as one of Inc.'s 5000 Fastest Growing Companies. As a leadership speaker, I've helped businesses all over the world transform their strategies and become industry leaders. But this success did not come from some inherent skill for leadership. Rather, I succeeded because I almost failed.  My company was already struggling when the 2008 recession hit. We had strong talent and a great product, but something wasn't working. Faced with the potential collapse of everything I worked so hard to build, I had exactly two choices. I could watch it all fall down around me, or I could get serious about building new skills as a leader and discover what separated more successful companies from my own. Through research, countless interviews, and deep exploration of my own company culture, I developed the Seven Pillars of Successful Company Culture. These seven pillars represent the cultural foundation of an organization. I learned that as long as we had this solid base on which to build, my company would be free to innovate, explore, adapt, and ultimately thrive. These ideas saved my business. They enabled me to live out my dreams and dream even bigger. In fact, these principles have allowed me to run the kind of business in which all team members discover their greatest potential, explore new possibilities, and build fulfilling, prosperous lives. Now, as a speaker, coach, and author, I do the same for businesses like mine… businesses that have strong talent and a solid product, but are still missing those illusive traits that separate good companies from exceptional companies.  Leaders like you—who are driven, smart, and possibly a little exasperated—are the reason I do what I do. I know you and your company are capable of tremendous things.

This book sheds light on 36 statements made by atheists of the present and the past - Sam Harris, Stephen Hawking, Christopher Hitchens, Alex Rosenberg, Richard Dawkins, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Bertrand Russell - to name a few. While deconstructing their statements in light of evidence and reason, the case for theism grows. It's further supported by the stories of former atheists who changed their minds.  There is a new breed of atheist in town. They're intelligent, vocal, and sometimes very aggressive. They communicate with boldness and conviction, but are they correct? Many of them are well-known and highly regarded, but does everything they say really make sense? Is their case for atheism sound? This book addresses thirty-six of the most common things atheists say when they challenge people of faith. After examining what prominent atheists passionately proclaim, in light of evidence and reason, it seems the case for God's existence emerges stronger than ever. Based on the bestselling book “Our Towns: A 100,000-Mile Journey into the Heart of America” by journalists James and Deborah Fallows, the visually stunning feature documentary spotlights ingenious local initiatives and explores how a sense of community and common language of change can help people and towns find a different path to the future. In 2011, the Fallows created a blogpost for The Atlantic asking their readers to share compelling stories about their towns – from economic setbacks to local struggles or achievements – that have been overlooked by the national press. Within a week, they received over 1,000 responses. For the next five years, they traveled the United States exploring the changes taking place across small town America for what would become their bestselling book. With all of these options available, plus the blessing of adoption, it can be difficult for Christian couples to determine which to consider when the Bible doesn’t give explicit direction. Wayne Grudem applies biblical truth and ethical reasoning to help Christians navigate these questions as they seek to live out God’s word in an ever-changing society. The Wisdom Pyramid: Feeding Your Soul in a Post-Truth World is a plan for stabilizing a sick society by making us wiser. The online world is a disaster of untrustworthy information. The glut, the speed, the orientation of digital information all lead to epistemological chaos. How can we know anything?  Short answer: We don’t need more information. We need more wisdom. We need a diet built around knowledge-intake that actually cultivates wisdom. We need for our mental and spiritual health what the Food Pyramid was for our physical health: guidance for what to eat and what not to eat and in what proportions, so we can become healthier and wiser. Brett McCracken is a senior editor and director of communications for The Gospel Coalition. He is the author of The Wisdom Pyramid: Feeding Your Soul in a Post-Truth World(Crossway, 2021), Uncomfortable: The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community (Crossway, 2017), Hipster Christianity: When Church & Cool Collide (Baker, 2010), and Gray Matters: Navigating the Space Between Legalism & Liberty (Baker, 2013). “Your testimony is the greatest story you’ll ever tell.” Billy Ballenger’s personal story reads like a movie script, and there’s nothing he doesn’t share! He truly believes the greatest story anyone could ever tell is their testimony. Just ask the over half million lives he’s already impacted though his songs and story. His new song Tree and the Nails is soon to be a major hit on Christian radio and beautifully tells the story of God's love through the power of the cross. https://billyballenger.lnk.to/treeandthenails Billy’s music is driven by his heart to create a song that speaks for those who can’t, and inspire those who can! He found his passion for music as a young boy growing up in Indiana. Yet as a child, he was troubled and bullied which led to bad decisions and bad outcomes. By eighteen Billy was already a young married father, but still chasing after the party life. Substance abuse, burglaries and violence led to a SWAT team raiding his home which ended with he and his wife being arrested. As a result, their baby girl was taken from them and they were both sentenced to six years in prison. While locked up, Billy made a decision to follow Jesus Christ and his life would be radically changed from that day forward! Billy and his wife were miraculously released early from prison and soon received full custody of their daughter! Billy followed his heart and began pursuing his dream of becoming a recording artist. Since that day, God has led him around the globe with performances in the United States, China, Russia, Canada, worldwide television, and Christian music's largest annual tour Winter Jam, where his dream of arena tours and reaching tens of thousands for Christ became a reality! Billy is incredibly grateful for the friendships and collaboration he’s found touring with artist's like Building 429, Crowder, Andy Mineo, Passion, Hillsong Young and Free, Red, NewSong, and so many more. But Billy’s not done yet...in an effort to continue to impact everyone, everywhere he goes, he continues to accept opportunities to expand his outreach into every community he can. He co-founded a life-changing nonprofit called “Break the Grey, Inc.” Its mission is focused on one thing . . . to bring the hope of Jesus Christ to the lost and hurting through music and speaking! Here are the lyrics to his song Tree and the Nails: What do I do with all these scars? How do I move on when they’re with me, dawn to dark I know that I need grace Oh God, meet me in this place You call me chosen, you call me loved, you don’t see broken You see more than enough Whenever I wander, whenever I fail, your love doesn’t falter Your love prevails, through the tree and the nails God I’ve been longing for the day When I’d finally be free, like you promised I would be As I pray, and I seek I know you answer me You call me chosen, you call me loved, you don’t see broken You see more than enough Whenever I wander, whenever I fail, your love doesn’t falter Your love prevails, through the tree and the nails No I’m not who I was when I started this race But I know you’re not done, you’re not finished with me Cause everything broken is coming undone You called us your daughters, you called us your sons Yeah You call me chosen, you call me loved, you don’t see broken You see more than enough Whenever I wander, whenever I fail, your love doesn’t falter Your love prevails, through the tree and the nails Through the tree and the nails. For years, she had sensed something was wrong. Harry was losing weight and losing friends. He had lost the brightness in his eyes and voice, changing from a young boy with boundless enthusiasm to a shadow of himself, chasing something she could not see. Now her worst fears had come to light.Under Our Roof is the story of a national crisis suffered in the intimacy of so many homes, told with incredible candor through the dual perspectives of a mother rising in politics and a son living a double life, afraid of what might happen if his secret is exposed. In this honest, bracing, yet ultimately uplifting memoir, they discuss the patterns of a family dealing with an unspoken disease, the fear that keeps addicts hiding in shame, and the moments of honesty, faith, and personal insight that led to Harry’s recovery. In a country searching for answers to the devastating effects of opioids and drug abuse, Under Our Roof is a ray of hope in the darkness. It is not only a love story between mother and son but also an honest account of a pressing national crisis by a family poised to make a difference. Harry Cunnane is the Regional Resource Director for New Jersey. In this role, he will assist you in admission to any Caron facility, answer questions regarding programs and services, provide tours of Caron programs, offer consultations with patients and families, and provide resources and referrals in your area when appropriate.  Madeleine Dean is a mother, grandmother, Professor, lawyer, and advocate representing Pennsylvania’s 4th Congressional District of Berks and Montgomery Counties. Congresswoman Dean is an outspoken leader who champions priorities such as strong education systems, equal access to healthcare, gun violence prevention, clean water and combating climate change, and ethical governance.  Madeleine’s concern for equality — and a broader desire to expand her public service — eventually inspired her run for Congress. In 2018, Pennsylvania had 18 Congressional seats — and 0 women. Along with a cadre of other women from across the state, Madeleine set out to change that. She ran for the Fourth Congressional District seat and won. In Congress, Madeleine remains focused on decency and the common good. That means working hard to address issues that affect Americans deeply — including stopping gun violence and guaranteeing health care for all. In Madeleine’s view, building a more compassionate society means making smart, humane policy choices. It also means working to ensure that government functions smoothly and delivers the services constituents need.

Meet Brian Wittman – Inventor of the Xaphoon, “A Pocket Sax.”

The Xaphoon is a pocket sax made by Brian Wittman, a Maui resident who invented the instrument more than 32 years ago. This extremely durable instrument is ideal for classrooms, students on a budget, and anyone who might be subjecting the instrument to rough conditions. "I have made over 15,000 such instruments in the past 20 years, all because of a single instrument I made on the whim of a child. The young lad lived with his mother in a tent in the woods, and heard me playing the sax (the expensive metal variety). He approached respectfully and then boldly asked if perhaps I had a little one he could play. Why not? I fiddled around and whittled a small end-blown block flute out of bamboo. Its tone was wheezy and small, and satisfied neither of us. I had a small grinding wheel I was using to shape some wooden boat cleats, and in sudden inspiration I applied the flute to the wheel and ground off the whole corner of the mouthpiece at an angle, re-shaping it to take a sax reed. With a bit of string holding the reed, I blew a test note... it screamed! The child was delighted and couldn't wait to have it, so I passed it on, but immediately made myself another, this time a bit longer, and I made the mouthpiece first so I could hear the pitch as I located the finger holes. Somehow, by chance, I ended up with a serviceable scale in E, and I couldn't put it down. I even played it one-handed as I drove into town, not noticing the speedometer was reading 80 until I heard the sirens. Finally I arrived at the rehearsal studio where I was due, only to find a major hero, Mr. Airto Morierra (the Brazilian percussionist) just happened to be there jamming with my delighted band members. I jumped in on my new axe, and found that its strong warm tone could be as full as a sax, and amplified very well in an electric band setting. Airto was fascinated, so I offered this #2 instrument as a token of my respect for his music. So I made a third and played it on gigs. People would come up and ask about it... “Where did you get it?” “You made it?” “Can you make me one?” “What do you mean you don't have time––Here's my money!” So I ended up in business. A name developed from "bamboozaphone" to "bamboozafoon" to "bamboo zafoon" to just "zafoon," then spelled "xaphoon". I eventually moved closer to the bamboo forests, and even took out a patent in several countries. And as I answered my mail and filled the orders, the years went by. My children were born into a house built of bamboo saxophones, and heard them from the womb onward. The instrument I have made commercially all these years is not much different from the first experimental models. I did construct several larger instruments, some with conical extensions (usually cow horn), but rather than complicate the design with a number of pieces, I have elected to maintain the "one stick" concept with the mouthpiece carved directly on the end of the instrument body. Fortunately, the bamboo naturally lends itself to this type of construction if it is carefully chosen in the forest for the correct length and diameter. After some experimentation, I eventually found a hole placement and fingering system that will allow two complete chromatic octaves, though the instrument remains primarily diatonic. For example, it would be simple enough to play a C# note on a C instrument, or sketch through a riff in that key while following the chord changes, but it would not make much sense to transpose the entire tune to C#. There would be just too many cross-fingerings and lip adjustments. I have generally restricted my output to C instruments, mostly to avoid confusing beginners with too many choices. I will gladly make instruments of any key, but only if the customer is still interested after having attained some skill on the C. The C plays best in the keys of D,F, G, Gm, Dm, Am, etc. Some of my customers have surprised me by adopting radically different styles,

Improve Your Level of Happiness with the Positive Shift

The truth is, the way we think about ourselves and the world around us dramatically impacts our happiness, health, how fast or slow we age, and even how long we live. In fact, people with a positive mindset about aging live on average 7.5 years longer than those without. That might sound alarming to those of us who struggle to see the bright side, but the good news is we can make surprisingly simple changes or small shifts to how we think, feel, and act that will really pay off.  It’s the reason why spending time on Facebook makes us feel sad and lonely. Why expensive name-brand medicines provide better pain relief than the generic stuff, even if they share the same ingredients. And why a hospital room with a good view speeds up recovery from surgery.  In The Positive Shift: Mastering Mindset to Improve Happiness, Health, and Longevity, Dr. Catherine Sanderson breaks down the science of thought and shows how our mindset—or thought pattern—exerts a substantial influence on our psychological and physical health. Most important, this book demonstrates how, no matter what our natural tendency, with practice we can make minor tweaks in our mindset that will improve the quality—and longevity—of our life.  Combining cutting-edge research from the fields of psychology, neuroscience, and medicine, as well as vivid real-world examples of the power of mindset, The Positive Shift gives readers practical and easy strategies for changing maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors so they can live longer, happier lives. These behaviors include:  Appreciating nature, with actions as simple as eating lunch outsideGiving to others, like volunteeringSpending money on experiences, not possessions  CATHERINE A. SANDERSON IS THE POLER FAMILY PROFESSOR AND CHAIR OF PSYCHOLOGY AT AMHERST COLLEGE. She received a bachelor's degree in psychology, with a specialization in Health and Development, from Stanford University, and received both masters and doctoral degrees in psychology from Princeton University.   Her research has received grant funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Health. Professor Sanderson has published over 25 journal articles and book chapters in addition to four college textbooks, middle school and high school health textbooks, and trade books on parenting as well as how mindset influences happiness, health, and even how long we live (The Positive Shift). In 2012, she was named one of the country's top 300 professors by the Princeton Review. Professor Sanderson speaks regularly for public and corporate audiences on topics such as the science of happiness, the power of emotional intelligence, the art of aging well, and the psychology of courage and inaction. These talks have been featured in numerous mainstream media outlets, including The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, USA Today, The Atlantic, CNN, and CBS Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley. She also writes a weekly blog for Psychology Today - Norms Matter - that examines the power of social influence on virtually all aspects of our lives. Her latest trade book, published in North America as Why We Act: Turning Bystanders Into Moral Rebels (Harvard University Press) and internationally as The Bystander Effect: The Psychology of Courage and Inaction (HarperCollins), examines why good people so often stay silent or do nothing in the face of wrongdoing. For a preview of the topics addressed in this book, watch Catherine’s TEDx talk on the Psychology of Inaction, which describes the factors that contribute to inaction and provides strategies we all can use to help people act, even when those around them are not.
