Randy Thomas Lanier is a man with some seriously incredible stories. He is a professional race car driver and convicted drug trafficker from the United States. Yes, you read that correctly. Two endeavors that grew together to heights few have experienced. He is best known for his racing efforts in the mid-1980s, including winning the 1984 IMSA Camel GT title for the wholly independent Blue Thunder Racing team, placing 9th in the 1986 INDY 500, and becoming the Rookie of the Year at that same race. In 1988, Randy was arrested for marijuana smuggling and sentenced to life in prison without parole under the Continuing Criminal Enterprise statute (also known as the "Super Drug Kingpin" law). We talk to Randy about his late start in racing; how he ascended through the ranks so quickly; beating Porsche; a factory ride offer; how it came crashing down; and how he found purpose and happiness. Sam & Richey were champing at the bit for this week's hang-out! 1984 IMSA GT Champion, 1986 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, drug trafficker, and author, Randy Lanier joined the Lounge this week!Randy's story has been a featured episode of the Netflix show "Bad Sport," and his book, "Survival of the Fastest, comes out today (August 2nd)! It is available at https://tinyurl.com/Survival-of-the-Fastest!The conversation has no direct path towards the end of the show, but it wanders through various topics! Hearing the Indy 500 for the first time, DRIVING at Indy, paying for a racing team, balancing racing and his "side-hustle" of trafficking thousands of tons of marijuana into the United States.Randy is an open book... he will talk about any part of his life and be honest about it! He shares his thoughts on people being held in jail, for non-violent cannabis crimes, while the state they're detained in, has some marijuana legalization laws in place (medicinal or recreational).Randy talks about how difficult it is to drive an Indy car. Sam asks Randy about the 1986 Indy 500. How did he clear his mind, from all that was going on, to drive to such a high finish?Randy talks deeply about a few topics, and each was well spoken, and from the heart! This was a fantastic hangout, and at the end, Randy poses a WONDERFUL idea, that the guys are thinking MUST HAPPEN!A great time had by everyone, this week, and the guys are pretty sure you will love it too! There is only one place to start this week, which is Spiderman : No Way Home, Marvel doing what Marvel does in the MCU. Tosin sacrifices sleep to bring a review (and to avoid spoilers, because people on the internet suck). Also in Cinemas, Sharon sees what Steven Spielberg can do with West Side Story. At Home, Sharon watches Jason Statham grunt and punch things in Guy Ritchie's Wrath of Man, and Tosin gets stuck into the Netflix documentary series Bad Sport. Is Netflix killing cinemas? Each week we weigh up what we've seen in cinemas with what we've watched online at home and figure out which provided the best time. At least, we did before COVID jumped in and declared Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney + and friends the winner. Parenthood, or so we hear, is full of a kind of transcendent joy, the kind you can only experience by watching your offspring learn and grow. That is, when they're not making you want to hop in the car and keep driving until you run out of road. There are some ups and downs, for sure. But you'll hardly ever find a parent who wouldn't do almost anything for their kids. Notice we said “almost” anything. Because there have to be limits, right? Well…for the parents in today's story, not so much. First we have Texas mom Wanda Holloway, who in 1990 tried to hire a hit man to take out her daughter's cheerleading rivals. Then we have French dad Christophe Fauviau, who dosed his kids' tennis opponents to make sure his little angels won every match. The world of sports and true crime collide in the new Netflix series, "Bad Sport." The show examines the misdeeds of athletes, coaches, officials... and even nations. Episodes include a point-shaving scandal in basketball, amatch-fixing case in soccer, an Indycar drug smuggling operation, and an insurance fraud involvingthe assassination of... a racehorse. But today we focus on the episode set in the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. For decades, the Russians had dominated the sport of pairs figure skating. But that year, the underdog Canadian pair turned in a flawless performance, while their Russian competitors stumbled. To the shock of the sporting world, the judges denied the Canadians their gold medal. Then the Olympics was thrown into confusion when the French judge said she was forced to give the gold to Russia.“Gold War” recalls the score-fixing scandal and looks at the two couples caught in the middle ofan international incident. In today's episode, we speak to Lizzie Kempton, the episode director of "Gold War."This is You Can't Make This Up — where we uncover the true stories behind your favoriteNetflix documentaries and films.
For as long as we've had competitive sports, there's been scandal. My thoughts on Blackpink's Light Up the Sky documentary, some docuseries recommendations, plus tennis talk.
Controversy struck Serie A this past weekend (surprise surprise!) as Roma scored a goal that was disallowed for a penalty kick in their favour, which was subsequently missed and Juventus won. Nobody knew what was going on, especially when Jose Mourinho didn't rage about it.Then upon Simone Inzaghi's return to the Stadio Olimpico, Inter got mad over Lazio not kicking the ball out when their player was faking an injury. It all got a bit crazy. Then a red card came out after the match and who'd be a referee?!?!Elsewhere, an excellent comeback from 2 goals down saw the agony and the ecstasy of football: an impressive Milan victory secured with a heartbreaking own-goal in the Verona net, and emotional scenes after the match as the forgotten man of Milanello, Samuel Castillejo, produced a fine performance to help rescue his team and earn the adulation of San Siro, Silvio Pioli and his team mates.Victor Osimhen inspired Napoli to their 8th win in a row to keep up their winning record and stay on top of the Serie A table. And then Nicky and Mina review the "Footballgate" episode of the new Netflix documentary series "Bad Sport", in which Mina Rzouki is featured, detailing the calciopoli scandal that saw the biggest upheaval in the history of Italian football.01:00 Juventus v Roma21:10 Lazio v Inter32:30 Supporters shoutout36:00 Milan v Verona50:00 Napoli v Torino58:50 Bad Sport Netflix discussionDon't forget our ChroniclesQ&A mailbag show on Friday.Tweet us your questions to @serieAchronpod with the hashtag #ChroniclesQandAFor sponsorship opportunities with Serie A Chronicles podcast email marketing@mediachronicles.com.au.Find Serie A Chronicles on social media (all the links here) and at our website serieachronicles.com.Please give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts. You can also become a Chronicles Tifoso by supporting the podcast to help keep us running, at serieachronicles.com/supporter.Serie A Chronicles is a Media Chronicles production.Digital content and social media by Calido Media.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/serie-a-chronicles. Kathleen opens the show drinking an Outboard Cream Ale from the Milwaukee Brewing Company, discussing her recent shows at the Pabst Theatre in Milwaukee and The Chicago Theatre. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Hostess ScaryCakes in honor of Halloween, which she likes since they are just a festive chocolate cupcake. She then tastes Spooky Jr. Mints, which have black and orange mint flavoring but taste the same as the regular version, and Tessamae's Cilantro Lime Ranch, which she would only recommend to those Termites who don't want actual Ranch dressing. Kathleen gives a shoutout to Collectivo Coffee's Blue Healer blend, and to her lifelong love of Miracle Whip over mayonnaise. UPDATE ON KATHLEEN'S QUEEN'S COURT: Kathleen provides an update on the Court, reporting that Queen Dolly has recorded a duet of “Does She Love You,” with Reba. Queen Cher is suing Sonny Bono's widow over royalties for Sonny & Cher songs including “I Got You Babe.”UPDATES: Kathleen provides updates on the Missouri Cannibal, Banksy's “Girl With Balloon” sells for $25.4M, the Elizabeth Holmes trial continues to unveil the fraudulent nature of the Theranos technology in court. HALLOWEEN BRATWURST: Kathleen reports on a Madison WI butcher who east have created “Spook-toberfest” brats, which are cooked in local beer and dotted with candy corn. Kathleen is heading to Green Bay this weekend and is on the hunt for the festive brats. ALLIGATOR GAR CAUGHT: Kathleen reads an article from Kansas, where a fisherman has recently caught a 4.5 foot, 39.5-pound Alligator Gar. The catch is perplexing to local wildlife officials, since this horrifyingly ugly species of Gar are not native to Kansas. TENNESSEE TOWN FOR SALE: Kathleen reads a listing for a 7-acre Tennessee town that has hit the market for $725,000. According to the realtor tasked with selling the property, Water Valley has tremendous potential and is likened to the town mentioned the Schitt's Creek television series.MORE SNAKE NEWS: Kathleen reads an article detailing where a California woman found more than 90 rattlesnakes under her home, and another article where a Mississippi woman found a blond rattlesnake with rare pigmentation. ST LOUIS vs THE NFL: Kathleen reviews the current status of a lawsuit filed by her hometown of St. Louis against the NFL after the league allowed the Rams to move to Los Angeles. STL officials are seeking financial damages, and NFL lawyers are trying to get the Jan 2022 trial moved out of St. Louis. THE BIRTH OF HIDDEN VALLEY RANCH: Kathleen shares the story of how Hidden Valley Ranch was born through the work of a retired plumbing contractor and his wife. The Henson's purchased a 120-acre ranch in Santa Barbara, CA known then as Sweetwater Ranch, changing the name to Hidden Valley Ranch and creating a “California steak sauce” that is now commonly known as Ranch dressing. One day in 1999, a man named Bill Bannerman and the five members of a soon-to-be-VERY-famous pop punk outfit sat in a basement room with a dogeared copy of a little book called "Abby the Bad Sport." What they discovered in that tome would be the stuff of legend. Listen in as your favorite podcast boys recreate that heady conversation, delving into Abby's rotten attitude, Shannon Kilbourne's confusing extracurricular activities, Jackie Rodowsky's travels through the universe, and Claudia Kishi's most daring outfit yet. And to make matters even more fascinating this week, Tanner loses a battle with peanut butter, and Jack learns how to do a knock-knock joke, so there's plenty of good stuff to balance out Abby's shoddy behavior. Music credits: “The Energetic Rock,” by InflectionPoint “Eternity,” by Whitesand “Chopstick Slapstick,” by OurMusicBox “Slash,” by Arc North Thanks as always to original Baby Boy Scott Lamb for the intro music, and to Superbrat for the outro music.
