It remains to be seen if Tennis Australia's logistical balancing act to host the Australian Open will be worth it, but here we are. Amidst the tightest safety protocols yet, a nation grudgingly welcomes hundreds of tennis personnel into its borders, who promptly kvetch about the (free) food, the (free) accommodations, and the quarantine rules. Not all has changed, though: top players get special treatment and American men continue to embarrass us at home and across the globe. Buckle up: pandemic tennis enters year two, with (some) lessons learned.   4:00 Tennis Australia launches vast logistical plan in action - Tennys Sandgren tries to undermine it in about five minutes 11:15 Players begin to arrive in Melbourne on chartered flights, two flights must isolate for 14 days, complaints ensue 25:35 Here is a picture of my terrible food, in my free hotel, during my free trip, during a pandemic, in which I will earn a minimum of $100,000 even if I lose 29:05 The actual legitimate complaint: the potential inequity between the elite players in Adelaide and the rest in Melbourne 34:50 Notable qualifiers 42:35 Tennis results already: Sabalenka is on 15-match win streak; Hurkacz wins Delray Beach but is overshadowed by anti-mask grandstanding 53:30 Dayana Yastremska provisionally banned for an anabolic steroid. Today on the Lucky Letcord Podcast, Chris Oddo is joined by his colleagues at Tennis Now, Richard Pagliaro and Erik Gudris. The trio breaks down a superb opening week of tennis and looks forward to the upcoming Australian Open. Here are the topics we dive into: Tennys Sandgren tests positive for Covid but still flies to Melbourne, what's up with that? An elite quarantine in Adelaide, featuring Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka and others. Is it fair and what was Tennis Australia's motivation to throw this wrinkle into the plan? How friggin good was Aryna Sabalenka at Abu Dhabi and what does it say about her potential in 2021? Should we all be jumping on the Sebastian Korda bandwago pronto, or is prudence the better option? Erik and Richard give their take on what there is to like about Sebastian Korda and Chris mentions the intangibles, which could be why he is ahead of his peers at the young age of 20. Christian Harrison played amazing tennis, but it kind of got swallowed up by the fact that he's not into wearing masks. We discuss what happened with the American in Delray Beach, praise his amazing performance, and Chris admits that he is torn between loving Harrison and not loving the anti-mask. Erik leads a break down of some of the many interesting names that managed to qualify this year at the Australian Open. You'll love this discussion. Last but not least -- Why did Dayana Yastremska, who has been provisionally suspended, jump on plane to Melbourne? Enjoy the show and thanks for listening! Learn more about your ad choices. The first titles of the 2021 season have been won and players are now flocking to Australia for two weeks of quarantine. But not everything is going according to plan, with Andy Murray isolating at home after testing positive for covid-19 and Tennys Sandgren boarding his flight to Melbourne despite returning a positive test. We react to those two bits of news and discuss where it leaves the Australian Open. Wrapping up this week’s results, we ask whether Aryna Sabalenka can translate her dominance on the WTA Tour to the Australian Open, whether Alex de Minaur is in the mix, and who has more potential out of Delray Beach finalists Sebastian Korda and Hubert Hurkacz? Finally, we explain our enjoyment of Australian Open qualifying and tell the uplifting story of British qualifier Francesca Jones. "It was interesting trying to think about what to do after I got inside of 100; that was always my goal to get inside of 100. It took six years to do that for me. It was like what do I do now? Do I just move the marker to 50? Can I do that? Am I good enough? You just don't know." This week brings Tennys Sandgren to the show to talk about his career, the fallout he has dealt with, and what's next for him as the ATP tour restarts in New York (interview starts at 3:38). The world No. 55 spent the shutdown working on his drumming skills (he covered a few of his heavy metal favorites on Instagram), training in the gym, and getting valuable match play at World TeamTennis where his Orlando Storm squad made the playoffs. Sandgren gets into talking about his early tennis start, his college experience and his humble beginnings on the ITF tour. After three semesters at the University of Tennessee, he went pro in 2011 and enjoyed respectable success until a big breakthrough in 2018. That year, he reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and soon after he'd crack the Top 50. Off the court, the Tennessee native faced backlash for his old tweets, and he discusses how that impacted his career and life. Sandgren would go on to win his first ATP title at the start of 2019 in Auckland and he gives listeners a candid take on what celebrations can be like on tour. This year, he reached the quarterfinals Down Under once again, complete with a dramatic loss to Roger Federer after holding seven match points. The 29-year-old is returning to the tour at the Western & Southern Open and US Open this month after having not played an ATP match since February. Watch this episode on YouTube or Facebook. Tennys Sandgren , one of the more insightful, incisive, and polarizing players on tour, has lived an incredible life in tennis. As a child he grew up in Gallatin, Tennessee with a tennis court in his backyard.  As a junior tennis player, he was one of the best players in the United States but was not identified as a top prospect by the USTA.   After a standout career at the University of Tennessee, he struggled on the ATP Tour.  Coming up with players such as Noah Rubin, Tennys told us his story of perseverance. On this episode TENNYS SANDGREN  tells us how he broke into the top hundred in 2017 . He breaks down some of the adversity he faced when he made his run to the 2018 Australian Open quarterfinals.   He describes what happened when his father died unexpectedly , and what it was like to grow up in a fundamental Christian household. TENNYS SANDGREN explained what it was like to beat Fabio Fognini and squander 7 match points against Roger Federer at the 2020 Australian Open. (Recorded March 11, 2020.

Italian world number 12 Fabio Fognini has been added to the line-up for this summer's ASB men's Classic which will feature at least five players ranked in the top 20.The 32-year-old joins the already announced world number five Russian Daniil Medvedev, 15th ranked Canadian Denis Shapovalov, 17th ranked Russian Karen Khachanov and two times former champion American John Isner at 19.Fognini made the quarter-finals in Auckland this year and went on to claim his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Monte Carlo in April. He reached a career high ranking of 9 in July.Medvedev will be the star billing, appearing in Auckland for the first time after an incredible season where he reached his maiden Grand Slam final at the US Open after capturing his first Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati during his run of six straight finals. He also won the Shanghai Masters in October, the St Petersburg Open in his native Russia and the Sofia Open in Bulgaria.Only seven of the top 20 have entered either Auckland or the new ATP tournament in Adelaide which reveals its player line up later today. Five of them are in Auckland but it's understood that event has attracted 16-time grand slam winner Novak Djokovic.Adelaide being a new tournament having replaced the tour event in Sydney, has provided stiff competition for ASB Classic tournament director Karl Budge with a majority of the players ranked between 20 and 40 opting to play there. The likes of this year's semifinalist Jan-Lennard Struff and quarter-finalist Taylor Fritz have both entered Adelaide however Budge does have the extra carrot of having five wildcards (up from three) up his sleeve which Adelaide doesn't.Daniil Medvedev stormed into the US Open final. Photo / APThis is due to the new US$15million ATP Cup launching across the Tasman in Brisbane, Perth and Sydney on January 3.The 10-day tournament features 24 teams playing in Groups of four over the first six days before quarters-finals in Sydney on the Thursday before the ASB men's Classic. 16 teams will be eliminated by Wednesday meaning some players who get knocked out early are likely to want a wildcard to play in Auckland.Budge received dispensation from the ATP for the additional wildcards which Adelaide didn't due in part to the logistics of players making late decisions for transtasman travel. It opens up the possibility players of the ilk of Dominic Thiem, Roberto Bautista Agut, Kei Nishikori and Diego Schwartzman becoming available almost at the last minute.Regardless the 17 strong line up already assembled is as competitive as ever such is the depth on the ATP Tour. Auckland has picked up enigmatic Frenchman Benoit Paire who has had an outstanding season capturing two ATP titles and is ranked 24 in the world. There are seven players who have competed in the Next Gen ATP Finals during their career. Among them are top 20 stars Medvedev, Khachanov and Shapovalov while American Frances Tiafoe, Norway's Casper Ruud and Frenchman Ugo Humbert all played in Milan last month and are tipped to have big futures.Four of the top five ranked players in the field have cracked the top 10 in the rankings within the past two years and Fognini, Khachanov and Isner have 28 tour level titles between them. This year's runner up ex-Kiwi Cameron Norrie, ranked 53, returns but defending champion Tennys Sandgren will need a wildcard or enter qualifying as the American ranked 68 is entered but as the fourth alternate with the cut off for main draw acceptances being 62.Veteran Spaniard Feliciano Lopez is the last direct acceptance and the 38-year-old will be a popular addition to the tournament. He has been as high as 12 in the world and has won seven ATP singles titles.Former champion German Philip Kohlschreiber, a semifinalist this year is another who has missed out on the main draw and will need either a wildcard or enter qualifying. The ASB men's Classic starts on Monday January 13 with the final on Saturday 18, two day...

The clay court portion of the 2018 ATP season is in full swing, and co-hosts Alex Gruskin and Max Rothman are finally ready to get down in the dirt to cover it all. They begin their coverage with a deep dive into the 2018 U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship held in Houston, TX. The guys discuss the difficulties of transitioning from hard courts to the dirt, analyze how the different surface speed affects certain players’ games, and breakdown the performances of the many #NextGenATP Americans in the draw. Taylor Fritz, Tennys Sandgren, and a few other American players receive special shoutouts for their performances in Houston. However, the majority of this episode focuses on Stevie Johnson’s incredible run to defend his title. Rothman takes particular joy in this result, and explains why he thinks Stevie is the best American clay court player. Gruskin, meanwhile, explains how Tennys Sandgren has quietly gone about solidifying his place in the ATP top 75. Ben and Courtney fled to opposite corners of the globe after the Australian Open, so just now bring you this show on the Grand Slam that was, in which second seeds Roger Federer and Caroline Wozniacki won their 20th, and first, respectively. First, on the men. Why was closing the roof a correct, obvious decision? And indoors or outdoors, has it all gotten a bit too easy for Roger Federer at an age when it shouldn't? And on the flip side, does Rafael Nadal have grounds to complain as much as he does about schedules and surfaces and such? Also, we delve into the Tennys Sandgren saga, what parts of it were fair and not, and what lessons there are to be learned. Then, onto the women, where champion Caroline Wozniacki may have somehow had the least impressive tournament of any of the semifinalists? On her breakthrough, what we learned about Simona Halep, the joys of Hsieh Su-wei and the underwhelming major results of Elina Svitolina.  As always, thanks for liking us on Facebook (leave comments on the episode thread! Welcome back toooooo…. an Australian Open recap edition of Hey, Great Shot!!!! In this week’s episode, co-hosts Alex Gruskin and Max Rothman attempt to sift through all of the drama and action from the tournament’s second week of play. The guys discuss the (not so sudden) rise of Hyeon Chung, hop on board the Kyle Edmund Express, and recap some of their favorite performances from the year’s first grand slam. As it was one of the biggest stories within the Tennis Twitter Community, they also take a moment to express their opinions on the controversy surrounding Tennys Sandgren’s social media account. Despite heavy protest from Gruskin, the two dedicated this week’s Changeover Chat to the performance of Roger Federer. Rothman makes the obvious case for why Fed must be considered the GOAT, while Gruskin chooses to play the role of Devil’s Advocate by pointing out Fed’s one resume deficiency. They end the show by debating the tournament’s winners and losers (hint to Nike clothing designers, you lost), listing their favorite ATP Tour storylines moving forward, and of course, with advertisements from two new fake sponsors. All of the four quarterfinals played on Wednesday were won in straight sets, but each had its own story, and the resulting semifinals are mouth-watering, according to the Tennis Podcast team. Hyeon Chung is one of the stories of the tournament and he backed up his straight sets win over Novak Djokovic by overcoming a very difference challenge - being the favourite to win against the World No. 97, Tennys Sandgren. It made Chung the first Korean ever to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament and put him into a semifinal against Roger Federer. Sandgren continued to create headlines of his own because of his social media activity, and responded with a statement in his post-match press conference. What sort of challenge do the Tennis Podcast team think Chung can pose to Federer? Catherine Whitaker and David Law weigh up whether the similarities of his strengths to those of Djokovic might be a factor.Federer saved set points against Tomas Berdych and has yet to drop a set, but how well is he actually playing? In the women’s quarterfinals, classics were hoped for but didn’t materialise, partially because of the brilliance of Angelique Kerber and Simon Halep, partly because of erratic displays from Madison Keys and Karolina Pliskova.
