Society has become more socially conscious than ever before, especially young people. But finding one's place in the world, where one can contribute and make a difference, can often feel overwhelming. At the same time, parents struggle with how to instill civic minded values in their children. That’s what makes Eli Russ’ story not only remarkable, but also instructional for those looking to find their way. Eli learned the value of service at an early age, almost by chance...and it changed the course of his life.Eli first joined in 2009 as a member of his high school Red Cross youth club. Before and after taking on this position, Eli has held numerous volunteer roles for the organization. In addition to supporting the Red Cross at dozen's of local disasters, Eli has also deployed in leadership roles to several major domestic and international emergencies, including as the Deputy Assistant Director for Response for Typhoon Yutu in the Northern Mariana Islands as well as the Sheltering Lead at the American Red Cross National Emergency Operations Center for Hurricane Florence. This fall, Eli Russ celebrated 10 years as an American Red Cross team member, a few weeks shy of his 25th birthday.Eli currently works as an associate at an Emergency Management consulting firm in Manhattan. Many teachers talk about the isolation of teaching. But what if you really were truly isolated? Today’s guest, Garrett Jackson, is a special education teacher in Saipan, the largest of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), a U.S. commonwealth about 130 miles from Guam—geographically isolated in the western Pacific. And in October 2018 the islands were hit by Typhoon Yutu, which devastated their community. Before moving to Saipan with his wife and son, Garrett taught high school history and government in Lawton, Oklahoma. He recently received his Master’s in Autism and Developmental Disabilities from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. In his spare time, Garrett enjoys playing with his son, traveling, hunting, fishing, and amateur radio. The HMH Learning Moments: Teachers in America series profiles K–12 teachers across the country. Typhoons can have a devastating impact on Taiwan and other countries in Asia/Pacific. As I record this podcast Typhoon Yutu having had a devastating effect on Northern Philippines was leaving the region but leaving lots of precipitation behind in Taiwan. For Taiwanese, typhoons are a normal part of life, during the season between June and November. I talk about some of my past typhoon experiences. For travellers as long as you stay indoors and take advice from locals you'll usually be only inconvenienced for anywhere from a few hours to maybe a day depending on the severity of the typhoon. Hundreds of flights can be cancelled so it could cost you a day or two on your way out, or possibly a delay arriving. Thanks so much for listening to the podcast.
