For decades, string theory has been hailed as the leading candidate for the theory of everything in our universe. Yet despite its mathematical elegance, the theory still lacks empirical evidence. One of its most intriguing, yet vexing, implications is that if all matter and forces are composed of vibrations of tiny strands of energy, then this allows for a vast landscape of possible universes with different physical properties, varieties of particles and complex spacetimes. How, then, can we possibly pinpoint our own universe within a field of almost infinite possibilities? Since 2005, Cumrun Vafa(opens a new tab) at MIT has been working to weed out this crowded landscape by identifying which hypothetical universes lie in a ‘swampland' with properties inconsistent with the world we observe. In this episode of The Joy of Why, Vafa talks to co-host Janna Levin about the current state of string theory, why there are no more than 11 dimensions, how his swampland concept got an unexpected lift from the BICEP array, and how close we may be to testable predictions.
Did you know that only 3% of children in low income countries have access to surgery, while 85% of children in high income countries like the US have access? This means that easily treatable conditions like appendicitis or long bone fractures could result in death or lifelong disability for children in low and middle income countries. On the bright side, there are organizations like World Pediatric Project that are working to provide access to specialty medical care for children in Latin America and the Caribbean. The episode features an interview with Vafa Akhavan, the CEO of World Pediatric Project, a nonprofit organization that provides access to specialty medical care for children in Latin America and the Caribbean. The conversation covers Vafa's background and career path, as well as the mission and unique model of World Pediatric Project. Vafa emphasizes the importance of access to healthcare for children in low and middle income countries and discusses the extreme cases that World Pediatric Project focuses on. This organization has amazingly developed a network of pediatricians, hospitals, and donors over the past 20 years, which allows them to care for children around the world.Check out the shownotes to learn more!Takeaways: Access to surgery for children in low-income countries is critically low, at only 3%. The World Pediatric Project aims to provide specialized medical care for underserved children. Unique surgical cases require tailored approaches, as each child's needs significantly differ. Building partnerships with local healthcare providers enhances the capacity of pediatric care systems. Children represent 30% of the population and are essential for a better future. The ripple effects of surgery can transform not only a child's life but entire communities. ______Support the Podcast: Click here to send in a one-time or monthly donationSubmit a Question: Click here to send in a question!Join the Podcast Mailing list: https://www.globalhealthpursuit.com/mailing-listMake sure to follow me on LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook!Email me at hetal@globalhealthpursuit.com______Thank you to our partners at CHIMUK: A sustainable and ethical handmade fashion brand transforming women's lives through knitting. String theory, the current leading candidate for a theory of quantum gravity as well as other particles and forces, doesn't connect directly to the world we see. It's possible that there is a large landscape of possible states of theory, with the hope that one of them represents our universe. The existence of a landscape implies the existence of a corresponding swampland -- universes that are not compatible with string theory. I talk with Cumrun Vafa, a respected physicist and originator of the swampland program, about how we might use constraints on what kinds of physics are compatible with string theory to make predictions about cosmology and other experimental regimes. In the conversation we refer to a famous diagram representing different ten-dimensional string theories, as well as 11-dimensional M-theory, as different limits of an underlying fundamental theory.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2024/05/27/277-cumrun-vafa-on-the-universe-according-to-string-theory/Cumrun Vafa received his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University. Yasmin Vafa, human rights attorney and co-founder and executive director of #Rights4Girls, offers an unflinching look at the policies that unjustly criminalize girls who've endured abuse. In 2015, #Rights4Girls and survivor activist T Ortiz Walker Pettigrew initiated the "No Such Thing" campaign, emphasizing that child victims of rape are not "child prostitutes." This successful campaign has altered language and laws in several states to prevent the criminalization of exploited children. The organization also creates key publications highlighting crucial issues affecting young women and girls, especially the marginalized. Their unique research reveals these often-overlooked experiences and suggests tailored solutions. About Yasmin Vafa Yasmin Vafa is the co-founder and Executive Director of Rights4Girls. Paul Satterley is the 1995 Liston Trophy Winner, former AFL listed Player and current coach of Old Melburnians. He has coached throughout the AFL,VFL, VAFA and TAC Cup. On this episode we are joined by D's uncle, Satts for a raw and funny chat over a couple of beers. Ranging from Football and life as a player and coach through to his life threatening cancer battle. Satts has had an illustrious career in football. We talked about his journey as a player. From the highs of spending three years on the Footscray AFL list and winning the Liston Trophy. To the lows including being delisted a day before his 21st birthday, injuries and what it's liked being physically targeted and beat up week in and week out. Not only was Satts a great player, but he's an extremely successful coach. He shared his journey which lead to coaching at the Melbourne Demons and the steps along the way. He told us what he believes makes a good coach, balancing relationships and friendships and the tough parts of the job like delisting players. But outside of footy, Satts has an even more powerful story to share. In 2017 he was diagnosed with a rare skin cancer that threatened his life. He shared the emotional story of going through radiation therapy, the horrific side effects and the scary of thought that he may not survive. But with that challenge came the most uplifting upsides. Including how the team he was coaching gave him yet another 'why' to fight and the incredible empathy displayed by a co-worker that allowed him to take time to battle and conquer cancer.
