What if the technology that could save humanity…could also predict its end? In this episode of Mayim Bialik's Breakdown, Michio Kaku — legendary cofounder of string field theory and author of Quantum Supremacy — breaks down the quantum revolution that's about to change everything. What is quantum computing, really? Dr. Kaku explains its evolution from wild theory to world-altering reality — and how it could soon solve problems today's supercomputers can't even touch. But that's just the beginning. He reveals how quantum computing could: - Extend human longevity and transform medicine - Track dangerous asteroids before they strike - Accelerate the search for extraterrestrial life - Predict possible planetary catastrophes - Help us study parallel universes Are black holes actually gateways to interstellar travel? Dr. Kaku explains the shocking physics that suggests they might not just destroy matter, but connect distant regions of space-time. Are we alone in the universe? He explains why he believes we are not, and how string theory may one day prove the existence of a multiverse. Artificial Intelligence: Humanity's Greatest Tool — or Its Biggest Threat? Dr. Kaku shares why advancing AI deeply concerns him, why fighting AI may be the wrong strategy, and why he believes we may eventually need to merge with it instead. Could AI and robots become our partners in space exploration? Will artificial intelligence ever achieve consciousness? What would physically merging with technology actually look like? And what safeguards must we build before that future arrives? Plus: Why he predicts we may see more “3I/ATLAS”-type interstellar comets entering our solar system, and what that means for Earth. From quantum supremacy to the multiverse…from AI-human integration to black holes as cosmic gateways…this conversation explores the future of humanity at its most extreme edge. The future isn't science fiction. It's already unfolding. ALBUM PINS ARE CHANGING THE WAY WE HEAR CELTIC MUSIC I got an email from Discmakers, my CD manufacturer, saying they were forced to raise their prices because of tariffs by our president. This is a tax on Americans. So if you love CDs, remember that the prices will go up. So please support those higher priced CDs. I've been exploring my Irish and Scottish Heritage and have enjoyed supporting you here on Patreon and listening to the podcast. I was curious if you knew of any artists or albums that feature keening songs. I know keening is associated with grieving so I can imagine that there is a sacredness to it and it may not be considered to be respectful to record. I would love any insight you have. Also, I saw your Celtfather post about standing up for the things we  love and care about. Thank you for modeling courage and using your voice and platform to speak out against the atrocities occurring because of our current administration. I also hope that you recognize the resistance of making music and elevating the voices of other artists; that in and of itself is admirable! Onward!"

Many people think physics / reality is either guided by a probabilistic distribution or is “determined.” Actually, there's a third, far‐more unsettling option. Curt Jaimungal explains why Einstein's general relativity isn't actually deterministic. He discusses how Cauchy horizons and closed time-like curves break predictability, showing that math and physics don't always guarantee a set future for our universe. This is a solo deep‑dive. One that he's been meaning to make for a while. As a listener of TOE you can get a special 20% off discount to The Economist and all it has to offer! Overall This was a fun one to close out the haul with for sure. I definitely would recommend to a natural cider or wine enthusiast. Pairing-wise, I would go with some lighter flatbread preparations, mild to medium-strength cheeses, and perhaps sabayon or other related desserts Cheers and remember: Life’s a tap…drink up ’til it’s dry. I'm back with my friend and colleague Sabine Hossenfelder for another episode of “What's New in Science”. I think this is one of my favorite dialogues that we have had. Spending time with Sabine was a nice chance to step away from my physics lecture series for a bit. I know many of you have been enjoying the lectures, so don't worry, they'll be back soon. In this episode, we covered the kind of science news I like best: ideas you can argue about and results that make you recalibrate. Sabine opened with describing a clever proposal that future fusion reactors might double as axion dark matter factories, producing a flux of very light, weakly interacting particles through neutron-lithium reactions in the shielding. That led to a discussion about what people mean by “axions,” why particle physicists tend to be more particular about the term, and why I'm always more interested in dark matter candidates that were invented to solve an actual problem, not just to fill a cosmological gap. From there we jumped to quantum mechanics at the edge of common sense, with a Vienna experiment showing interference from a cluster of thousands of atoms, and a friendly disagreement about whether “collapse” is a real physical process or just the wrong way to talk about what quantum mechanics is doing. We also talked about AI and math, including the recent swirl of claims about machines proving famous open problems, what was hype, what was rediscovery, and what might genuinely be changing in how mathematicians search the landscape. Then we went from equations to extinction, with a fascinating new approach using space dust and helium isotopes to argue that life may have started rebounding after the Chicxulub impact far faster than people had assumed. Sabine brought a surprising example of string theory mathematics finding a practical use in modeling biological networks, and we ended with biology proper in two very different moods: a sobering study in mice suggesting lung tumors can hijack vagus nerve signaling to suppress local immune responses, and then a lighter result about dogs learning words from overheard human conversation at roughly toddler level. My dog Levi, who many of you have seen on the podcast, was asleep next to me while we talked about it, which felt like the right way to end.As always, thank you for your continued support, and I hope the changing of seasons brings you good time with friends and family. As always, an ad-free video version of this podcast is also available to paid Critical Mass subscribers. Can science actually PROVE God exists? Dr. Antony Latham joins us to explore how the cosmos, consciousness, and the complexity of life all point to divine design—and why the Big Bang might be Christianity's best friend. In this episode of Remnant Radio, Joshua Lewis sits down with retired physician and author Dr. Antony Latham to tackle one of the most critical questions facing believers today: Does science contradict Christian faith, or does it actually confirm it? From his own journey as a teenage skeptic who lost faith studying evolution to becoming a Christian in Kenya and diving deep into biology, consciousness, and cosmology, Antony brings a unique perspective that bridges the gap between the lab and the sanctuary. What We Discuss:-The Big Bang & Biblical Creation -Fine-Tuning of the Universe-The Cambrian Explosion-Consciousness & the Soul -Moral Law & Objective Beauty -Miracles & an Open Universe Whether you're wrestling with doubts about faith and science, or you're looking for solid apologetic tools to strengthen your biblical worldview, this conversation will equip you with evidence-based answers rooted in both Scripture and scientific discovery. 0:00 - Introduction1:04 - From Skeptic to Scientist to Believer5:13 - Big Bang: Friend or Foe to Christian Faith?9:20 - Fine-Tuning Arguments & Cosmological Evidence12:17 - String Theory & Multiple Universe Objections14:03 - The Exquisite Precision of Universal Constants15:37 - God of the Gaps Argument Addressed17:04 - Origin of Life & Irreducible Complexity19:30 - Old Earth Creation & Genesis Interpretation22:56 - The Cambrian Explosion & Fossil Record28:03 - Reading Genesis 1 Poetically & Theologically31:17 - Consciousness & Evidence for the Immaterial Soul35:17 - Moral Objectivity, Beauty, & Free Will41:02 - Mind-Body Dualism & Christian Worldview43:03 - Taking Back Science for the KingdomABOUT THE GUEST:

He is a licensed private investigator in the States of West Virginia, Florida, and Pennsylvania and a retired law enforcement officer and Chief of Police in Fayette County, PA. He currently serves as the State Director for the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) in WV and the Assistant State Director of MUFON in PA. Fred has investigated over 500 UFO cases and established MUFON's Humanoid Research Group, which oversees the investigation of humanoid beings reported as UFO occupants. He was the co-host of a Comcast Presentation that lasted for three years and produced television shows called “UFOs Over Pittsburgh” and now a podcast called “String Theory (40 movies) on YouTube. He is also served as the Director of the West Virginia Center for Unexplained Events, an organization dedicated to investigating sightings of Bigfoot, cryptids, ghosts, and other anomalous entities. He is the Director of the Fayette County, PA Bigfoot Research Project, headquartered in Uniontown, PA.Note from Mufon Director on Fred:MUFON West Virginia State Dir. and PA ASD Fred Saluga passed away. Fred joined MUFON in Florida in 1996 and worked with Joe Jordan. In 2007, I noticed Fred's name on our member list with a Florida address. I quickly recruited him into PA MUFON. When the 2008 Bucks County UFO Wave hit, our cases tripled. With the broadcast of Discovery Channels UFOs over Earth, our membership and investigators also tripled. With managing 7 states, Fred and Bill Weber were integral in helping me run PA-WV-DEL MUFON. I promoted Fred to WV SD and Bill to DEL SD, but we always worked as a team conducting training classes and 42 conferences in Erie, Pittsburgh, and Philly from 2008-2024. Fred was the people's skills, and I was the manager's skills. Fred and I did a monthly show on public TV called UFOs over Pittsburgh. After 44 episodes, we moved the show to my house under the name of String Theory of the Unexplained. In total, we did almost 100 episodes and they are available on YouTube. We made PA MUFON great!Fred was a character. He would refer to his hometown as Fayettenam so I would introduce Fred as the James Bond of Fayettenam. His passion for Bigfoot far exceeded his passion for UFOs. We lobbied MUFON to investigate the Bigfoot-UFO connection. Fred would conduct free UFO-Bigfoot conferences in extended rural locations to get the word out. Fred taught a UFO class at a local college which I have picked up as instructor. Fred, Bill, John Dousette, and I went to many Symposiums together. The most fun was in Vegas, of course, when we stayed on the Strip at my timeshare. Fred was a good friend and will be missed by many, especially me. I will miss our long drives around the state and our talks on conservative politics, UFOs, and cryptids. . . .From his daughter Leah prior to his passing, “My father is truly one of a kind. At 76, he's lived a life defined by selflessness, honesty, and a deep commitment to helping others. Even now, after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, he continues to inspire everyone around him with his strength and wit. He's been a Police Chief, CYF investigator, outpatient drug and alcohol counselor, Bigfoot and paranormal investigator. His curiosity and compassion have touched countless lives; he's always been there for people-no matter who they are or what they are going through. Throughout his life, my father has made a huge difference in this world and in so many people's lives. His impact goes far beyond our family-he's been a friend, mentor, and source of hope for so many. This diagnosis has forced him to stop working and relocate to Pittsburgh for treatment, far from his home in West Virginia. Now the time has come that his body is not responding to the treatments, one treatment affects another in not so good ways. So what it is now is the end of the road for my Poppa. He's going to be crossing the rainbow bridge anytime now. Comfort measures only at this time. I do want to also say how very strong and courageous he is through all of this up until he just fell asleep, we were still talking, and laughing, and still handling business. I want to complete his end of life wishes. I want to celebrate his life, to remember all the memories with him. Those cherished moments I'll hold in my heart forever each one unwrapping a smile. I know that he was loved by many and that's because he loved so many. Thanks in advance”. Leah SalugaTypical Skeptic Podcast Links and Affiliates:Support the Mission:

DT: STRING THEORY / TELEVISION AND KALEIDOSCOPEThe guitar as we know it has had an illustrious evolution, starting its journey in ancient Mesopotamia, then finding its earliest recognizable incarnation 5 centuries ago in Spain, and continuing to move through various cultures until blossoming into its electric manifestation in the modern era. It was the magic wand to the baby boom generation - suddenly, everybody had to have one to express themselves, along with a garage band with whom to practice their 3 chord fantasies. Then, there were the transcendental wizards who blazed trails of such sonic originality that the instrument's sound never got boring. Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck, to name a couple. Most of them were firmly rooted in the blues form. Today we feature two bands (Television and Kaleidoscope) whose unique recorded output, though small, blew minds with their sublime, far-reaching soundscapes - reaching deeply into themselves, and searching widely for other cultural inspirations to make original music no 60s/70s rocker teens had even heard before. KALEIDOSCOPEDavid Lindley merged his folk cred with Solomon Feldhouse who brought a middle eastern sensibility to the mix, and they struck world-fusion-rock gold. Lindley started off as a banjo picker, but could play anything with strings, and Feldhouse, a Flamenco artist who had grown up in Turkey, was giggling as an accompanist for belly dancers. Theirs was an unlikely,  but unimpeachable partnership. In this cut from their 1967 debut album, Side Trips, the boys take us on a magical mystery tour through the sanctum of the Egyptian Gardens, where Oud riffs twirl madly through the perfumed air, and scantily clad dancers hypnotize us with their charms. TELEVISIONPunk music was completely democratic. It was said that you didn't have to have chops to play; all you needed was passion. Not so with Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd's band Television. Their debut album, 1977's Marquee Moon immediately splintered that myth. The two virtuoso guitarist's method of meshing their sound together threw down the gauntlet to any aspiring duelists, and their achievement remains unparalleled, and unchallenged. It was an intellectual approach heretofore unseen in CBGBs, and the other dives of the lower east side. There was a jazz-like, improvisational element at work, and in the record's eponymous cut, Marquee Moon, you can hear Verlaine and Lloyd spur each other on to increasingly ecstatic heights.

We're going back into the archives for a conversation with theoretical physicist Brian Greene, recorded in 2017. Greene is widely recognized for his groundbreaking discoveries in the field of super string theory, and he's a rarity in the scientific world – famous outside of academia, thanks to his ability to make some of physics' most complex concepts — including Quantum Mechanics and supersymmetry — understandable to non-scientists. His best-selling books include “The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos” and “The Elegant Universe.”  On February 23, 2017, Greene came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater to talk to Alexis Madrigal, a journalist and author who's now co-host of KQED's Forum.

What if the ideas that linger in the back of your mind — the ones you can't quite explain — are the ones you most need to pay attention to?Episode SummaryIn this episode, I explore that question with Dr Nuno Reis, a former physicist and investment banker turned thinker and guide in uncovering what he calls rare dots — those unique, pre-verbal insights that feel deeply resonant but don't yet fit into our existing models of the world. Our conversation begins with Nuno's unusual career path, from string theory and theoretical physics into financial modelling and risk management, before moving into transparency roles in finance. From there, we trace the thread of his enduring curiosity: how crises drive paradigm shifts, why models are useful but limited, and what happens when we acknowledge that not everything fits into neat rational frameworks.Nuno then introduces the concept of rare dots and explains how he's harnessing AI in a novel, deeply human way: not to replace thought, but to help us surface the preverbal ideas that shape our uniqueness. Together, we explore how rare dots can guide creativity, meaning, and innovation in our work and lives — and why paying attention to the things that don't quite make sense may be the most sensible thing we can do.Guest BiographyDr Nuno Reis describes himself as a physicist turned banker turned explorer of human thinking. After completing a PhD in theoretical physics with a focus on string theory, he transitioned into investment banking at UBS and later into financial engineering and transparency initiatives at Bloomberg.Over 18 years in finance, he applied scientific methods to risk modelling, hedging, and complex derivatives, all while maintaining a deep curiosity about the limits of logic and models.Today, Nuno is the creator of the Rare Dots framework, which helps individuals and organisations uncover the pre-verbal insights that drive creativity and meaning. He combines philosophy, history of thought, and cutting-edge uses of AI to build environments where people can explore their deepest intuitions.Through workshops, cohorts, and his own practice, he guides others in turning those rare dots into pathways for innovation, purpose, and contribution.AI-Generated Timestamped Summary[00:00:00] Introduction and framing of rare dots as preverbal insights[00:01:00] Nuno's background: from physics to banking and financial modelling[00:06:00] Applying scientific methods to markets and the 2008 crisis[00:12:00] Replication crisis and paradigm shifts in science[00:18:00] Early story of curiosity and existential questions[00:21:00] Introduction of rare dots as deeply resonant insights[00:26:00] How resonance and intuition shape meaning[00:30:00] Creating environments to surface rare dots[00:35:00] History of thinking vs history of ideas[00:40:00] Using AI as a tool for rare dots and Wittgenstein's ladder[00:46:00] How AI can surface pre-verbal thinking[00:52:00] AI as a prompt for deeper human thinking[00:56:00] Rare dots exploration as an infinite game[01:02:00] Rare dots as a guide for careers and human valueLinksNuno on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/nuno-reis/Nuno's Substack - https://nunobreis.substack.com/

Earlier this year, my friend Matt Himes (managing editor of The Blaze's Align) lost his home in the California fires, but he didn't lose his sense of humor or his willingness to try a lot of things he's bad at. It was great catching up with Matt on life after the fire, what it's like to live out a George Carlin bit, “String Theory,” and going into the unknown of rebuilding. Lou was the Head Writer and Producer of the Webby Award-winning comedy channel We the Internet TV. Greg and Lou is best known for its sketch "Wolverine's Claws Suck," which has over 20 million views on YouTube alone. In addition to producing sketch comedy like Comedy Is Murder, performing stand-up across the country, and writing for The Blaze's Align, Lou is on the advisory board of Heresy Press, a FAIR-in-the-arts fellow, and host of the live debate series The Wrong Take and The Lou Perez Podcast (which is part of the Lions of Liberty Podcast Network). I hope you enjoy our conversation, but I know you'll enjoy Matt's article that ran in The New York Post: “This liberal is seeing red after decades of California misrule meant my house burned down.” As a writer, I'm jealous I didn't write the piece. As a human, I'm so fortunate I didn't have to live through what inspired Matt to write it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Joy of Why
Will We Ever Prove String Theory?

The Joy of Why

Play Episode Listen Later May 29, 2025 48:40

For decades, string theory has been hailed as the leading candidate for the theory of everything in our universe. Yet despite its mathematical elegance, the theory still lacks empirical evidence. One of its most intriguing, yet vexing, implications is that if all matter and forces are composed of vibrations of tiny strands of energy, then this allows for a vast landscape of possible universes with different physical properties, varieties of particles and complex spacetimes. How, then, can we possibly pinpoint our own universe within a field of almost infinite possibilities? Since 2005, Cumrun Vafa(opens a new tab) at MIT has been working to weed out this crowded landscape by identifying which hypothetical universes lie in a ‘swampland' with properties inconsistent with the world we observe. In this episode of The Joy of Why, Vafa talks to co-host Janna Levin about the current state of string theory, why there are no more than 11 dimensions, how his swampland concept got an unexpected lift from the BICEP array, and how close we may be to testable predictions.
