Three months after a wildfire burned 32,500 hectares of Jasper National Park, locals in the municipality are finding a way to rebuild their lives next to the charred remains of what they've lost. As this fire season comes to an end and the tourist town prepares for winter, Now or Never meets Jasperites as they navigate grief and new beginnings together. Joe Urie, a Métis tour guide and longtime local, brings Ify Chiwetelu and Trevor Dineen up to Old Fort Point, for a mountain top view of what Jasper looks like today. Lorraine Stanko searches through the debris of her friends' and neighbours' homes, trying to find valuables that weren't destroyed by the wildfire. She hopes to bring them, and herself, closure, after her own home in town burned down. Blocks away from where the Stanko's house once stood, Sviatoslav Rud and Nina Egorova's rented home is still standing, but it is still uninhabitable due to smoke damage. They're sleeping in a borrowed RV in front of their house even as the temperatures dip. As volunteer firefighter Kim Stark battled the blaze in town, her own house burned to the ground. Now, as she tries to talk to her three young children about the devastation she's learning as much from them as they are from her.Grab a plate at the town's community dinner, a 20-year-old tradition in Jasper, that has new meaning and urgency right now.And we meet Stephen Nelson in a Hinton Hotel after his seniors lodge burned down. After 16 years in Jasper with no stable home - he moved into the lodge 11 days before the evacuation order. He is preparing to leave Jasper for good -- "the love of his life" that won't seem to let him stay.

Roz Dineen's Briefly Very Beautiful is a spellbinding dystopian novel about the lengths one will go to for their children in a world teetering on the edge of apocalypse. In a land destabilized by unsafe air, wildfires, floods, viruses, supply shortages, and homegrown terror, Cass is raising three small children by herself in the city. Her husband, Nathaniel, has gone all too willingly to serve as a medic in an overseas war.His absence, and Cass's isolation, has brought her into an exhausted but harmonious rhythm with the children; while it's a frightening time, there is also a surprising, quiet tenderness in living on the edge of societal collapse. When things start to feel more dangerous in the city, Cass evacuates with the children to her mother-in-law's house deep in the countryside. Initially, it's a place of safety, but her mother-in-law's erratic behavior and increasing grip over the children worries Cass, and so they flee again to a commune on the coast. It's an idyllic place, but Cass comes to suspect this seemingly harmonious community has a dark underbelly. Briefly Very Beautiful is a magnetic novel about love and resilience. Against a wider backdrop of a world imploding, it is an exploration of hope and fear, beauty and joy, as well as seismic betrayal.Roz Dineen's lush prose combines with epic and precise world-building to create a society that feels at once unrecognizable but deeply, chillingly familiar. The result is a compelling portrait of what it is to parent through apocalypse.Roz Dineen was an editor at the Times Literary Supplement for 12 years, serving as fiction editor and later features editor. She has also written extensively for the Times Literary Supplement, where her essays and reviews have covered a range of topics from addiction to motherhood, from Jonathan Franzen to J. G. Ballard and Sally Rooney. She studied English literature at Trinity College, Dublin, received a master's degree in international studies and diplomacy from SOAS, London.Buy the book from Wellington Square Bookshop - https://www.wellingtonsquarebooks.com/book/9781419767951

Amid the Bay Area's dire need for more housing, California Forever has set out a bold vision for a new city in east Solano County on 17,500 acres of mostly farmland. But the company, backed by various Silicon Valley billionaires, has so far struggled to garner enough local support. In July, California Forever scrapped plans to ask for voter approval for the project on this November's ballot, but said it plans to try again in 2026. Many county officials and nearby residents oppose the project, while others want more information about how it would impact their communities. We'll talk about the state of California Forever's plans and what could happen next. Guests: Adhiti Bandlamud, housing reporter, KQED J.K. Dineen, Bay Area housing reporter, San Francisco Chronicle Jan Sramek, founder and CEO, California Forever Marc Weiss, chairman and CEO, Global Urban Development - a nonprofit organization focused on sustainable economic growth and urban development strategies. The update was – there is no update. A shooting at Dineen park involving 10 teenagers – killing one. Why hold a conference with no update? Dr. Ken Harris joins the show to help breakdown why. Dr. Ken argues that if there's no evidence there's no evidence to give. At least the department is communicating. Is this on leadership? This stems in to a conversation regarding leadership and protecting people – i.e. the now resigned Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle for her lack of protocols followed in the attempted assasination of former President Donald Trump.
Golf Digest instruction nerd and Bryson whisperer Luke Kerr-Dineen joins us after DeChambeau's victory at Pinehurst, where LKD was on the scene. We discuss Rory McIlroy's shocking collapse, why this may have been a top-five U.S. Open we've ever seen and why DeChambeau's latest transformation is so good for golf. Plus, we debate whether Rory was right or wrong to leave the property early and we look ahead to this week's Travelers Championship.
Michele Dinneen-White was working in an early education outreach program when she realized something. The program wasn't actually reaching out to the families who needed it most. Those families were still required to find the time and the means to get their child to the center in order to receive services. And for many, that barrier was just too much to overcome. So Michele decided to create something new. The program is called Play Smart Literacy and it serves families in the Chicago area. It's a fully mobile outreach program, one that actually reaches OUT and INTO the most vulnerable communities. And what is their mission? To build language and relationships through play. Michele and her parent play leaders go to where the families are – parks, shelters, mobile markets, Head Start and early care programs, laundromats, gas stations – and they build real relationships with the families they meet, while at the same time building the families' understanding of the connections between play, talk, and child development …AND building their confidence as parents as well. Their message is clear: EVERY parent has the ability to have a strong positive influence on their child's future.

For today's episode, I am joined by Dublin-based singer-songwriter Kate Dineen to discuss her unique approach to crafting a song and the inspiring story of how she built her career from the ground up as an artist without connections or resources. ✨ MORE ABOUT KATE DINEEN ✨ Kate is an indie singer-songwriter who grew up in the rural village of Kerry, Ireland. Her love of music started early when she learned to play tin-whistle at primary school at the age of five and read her father's CD inserts so she could memorize the lyrics. Her latest track, "doomscrolling," is out now on all DSPs. ✨ KEEP UP TO DATE WITH KATE DINEEN ✨ Instagram: instagram.com/katedineenmusic/ Facebook: facebook.com/katedineenmusic TikTok: tiktok.com/@katedineen Spotify: open.spotify.com/artist/2s7JrceaCyj0KEfIQ8CjmS YouTube: youtube.com/channel/UCWf759D8hEy1Aw_SHiTIA-w ✨ CONNECT WITH IZZY ✨ YouTube: youtube.com/channel/UCv6SBgiYCpYbx9BOYNefkIg Website: agrrrlstwosoundcents.com Instagram: instagram.com/agrrrlstwosoundcents/ Twitter: twitter.com/grrrlsoundcents
In this episode we chat to Alice Dineen, North American Sales Manager at Geotek Limited, who specialises in high-resolution, non-destructive analysis of geological cores. For over 25 years, they have designed, built, and supplied a range of Multi-Sensor Core Logger systems, using a suite of geophysical and geochemical sensors primarily aimed at non-destructive core analysis across the mining industry. Alice has an earth science and geology degree and has been with the business for over 5 ½ years and discuss Geotek, what they do and how mining companies benefit from using their equipment and expertise in logging core. KEY TAKEAWAYS Core scanning is essential for connecting remote sensing surveys to the subsurface, providing ground truth data for exploration and mining projects. Core scanning technology, such as the BoxScan system, automates core logging processes, ensuring consistent and non-subjective data collection for better geological interpretations. Machine learning algorithms, like k-means clustering, can be applied to core scanning data to segment and analyze mineral content, enhancing exploration and resource characterisation. Core scanning systems, like those offered by Geotech, can help expedite the transition to green energy by providing valuable data for critical mineral initiatives and carbon capture storage. Public awareness and education about the importance of core scanning in the mining industry and its role in the green energy transition are crucial for driving innovation and sustainability in the sector. BEST MOMENTS "Core is the most important resource we have from an exploration standpoint and in the mining sector in general." "Core scanning can be hugely beneficial in the carbon capture storage sector because you're wanting to characterise rocks which might be suitable hosts for carbon." "I think large file sizes can definitely be a real problem, particularly with high-resolution data collection." "I think core scanning in general can be hugely beneficial for the green energy transition." For years, Solano County residents wondered who was secretly spending hundreds of millions of dollars to buy up family farms in their community. The rumors swirled: was Disney planning a new theme park? Was it some sort of Chinese government land-grab? In August, the mystery was solved: the New York Times reported that a group of tech moguls including billionaire venture capitalist Michael Moritz, philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman and were making the purchases as part of a plan to build a city from scratch, on 50,000 acres of agricultural land. They've now gone public, under the name California Forever, and are promising to bring benefits like good paying local jobs, solar farms, and open space. But many questions remain. In this hour of Forum, we'll talk to the group's CEO as well as one of the local lawmakers raising concerns about the plan. Guests: J.K. Dineen, Bay Area housing reporter, San Francisco Chronicle Jan Sramek, Founder and CEO, California Forever Catherine Moy, Mayor, Fairfield
To meet its state-mandated goal of approving 82,000 new units of housing by 2031, San Francisco will need to dramatically ramp up the rate at which it greenlights construction. So far, it is not on course. Chronicle reporters J.D. Morris and J.K. Dineen have been crunching the city's housing numbers and join host Laura Wenus to share how local leaders are trying to push the city to move faster. | Unlimited Chronicle access: sfchronicle.com/pod Got a tip, comment, question? Hayes Valley's Proxy is a cluster of boutique shops and restaurants that functions as a community gathering space, but it sits on land that has been flagged for affordable housing for decades. Now that the city wants to start development, residents are divided on whether the project should move forward. Reporter J.K. Dineen joins host Cecilia Lei to break down the controversy and the broader stakes for San Francisco's housing debate. | Unlimited Chronicle access: sfchronicle.com/pod Got a tip, comment, question? San Francisco's Union Square is known for a lot of things: department stores and high-end boutiques, a massive and ornate Christmas tree and a Cheesecake Factory with an amazing view of the city. It's now also known for swaths of empty storefronts. Close to a quarter of the neighborhood's 3.2 million square feet of retail space is available for lease, according to brokerage firm Avison Young. Foot traffic in the area has yet to recover from the pandemic, but vacancy was already creeping up for years as more shopping shifted online and rental rates shot up. We'll talk about how the iconic retail district is doing, how the pandemic shook up brick and mortar retail and what could happen next. Guests: J.K. Dineen, Bay Area real estate reporter, San Francisco Chronicle Amanda Mull, staff writer, The Atlantic Marisa Rodriguez, CEO, Union Square Alliance - a business improvement district that provides security, maintenance, marketing, and capital improvements.
