Late August is often called the Dog Days of Summer and...boy, did the end of August 1999 every live up that reputation! August 16-31 was something of a drag. After a summer filled with huge moments in entertainment, culture, and news, suddenly, for a couple weeks, not much happened. But not nothing! We still got the requisite end of summer bad movie dump, featuring: Dudley Do-Right! In Too Deep! The Astronaut's Wife! and Teaching Mrs. Tingle! Plus chart-topping albums from Christina Aguilera, The (Dixie) Chicks, and Lou Bega! Plus, pop singer Vitamin C drops the album that would give us 2000's graduation anthem "Graduation (Friends Forever)"! Plus, Regis Philbin for the first time asks America, "Is that your FINAL ANSWER?" Also...East Timor begins its journey to becoming a new country! This week, John is joined by good friend of the show Julia Sirmons for the most boring two weeks (but a fun episode of) 99@25!

Late August, overnight insects, and highway sounds; suburban ambience.  The children are back to school, and Halloween has taken over entire sections of local department stores. But the pools are still open, and Labor Day is a week out. Suburbanites don't know whether to high-five a lifeguard or put a ***** pumpkin on the front stoop. Was that a football whistle? Is white still acceptable? At night, the bugs still sing under the evergreens, made bright red, murderously red by the tall Applebees sign just a klick away. The bugs persevere, for now.

ré·su·mé [rez-oo-mey, rez-oo-mey] noun1. a summing up; summary. 2. a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job. In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike's Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) It's part personal biography, part industry history, and admittedly totally self-indulgent on my part. This episode includes Batman #401, Classic X-Men #3, Cracked #224, D.P. 7 #1, Elfquest #16, G.I. Still University's Waitlist System [19:09] When to Submit Your Medical School Application [22:51] What Andrea O'Brien Would Change About Healthcare Know Your Why for Pursuing Medicine Medicine is a difficult profession, so schools would like to see your authenticity and passion come through your application. Accumulating experience over the long term can really set you apart from other applicants. Medical schools want to see that you've been preparing for it not just in the last few months. Community service and cultural competency are also things you want to highlight in your resume. “Know Your Why” by Simon Sinek is a book that can help you communicate your motive for pursuing medicine.  Avoid These Mistakes in Your Med School Application Choose schools where you're going to feel most comfortable and supported. Align your own goals to the school's mission. If you have encountered a challenging situation which affected your application, be sure to address it. The admissions committee notices any unusual changes and would appreciate an explanation.  Another mistake to avoid is rushing to submit your application. Take all the time you need to build a strong resume. Rejected or waitlisted students would do well to follow any feedback and advice given to improve their application.  Best Time to Apply for Medical School As a general rule, it is always better to submit your application sooner rather than later. Applications that are severely lacking may be rejected immediately. It's wise to let the school know if you're retaking the MCAT so they can wait for your new score. Submitting your application at the very end of the cycle would be disadvantageous because by then, most slots would already be filled. Late August or early September are ideal times to apply for medical school.   To learn more about how MedSchoolCoach can help you along your medical school journey, visit us at Prospective Doctor.  You can also reach us through our social media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MedSchoolCoach Dr. Erkeda's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doctordgram/ YouTube: www.youtube.com/@ProspectiveDoctor

Cow themed festivals and giant sand hills. It's a late August Mixed Bag and we're returning with a slew of topics and we have our return guest, from last week, to join in on the conversation. Laura Bain is back on Outlook this week as we discuss finding data plans for travel, our family beach day and using our white canes to climb the giant sand hill at Sand Hill Park on Lake Erie, and about some camp experiences to highlight next week's theme for the podcast. How can a white cane also be used as a hiking pole? What does camp provide for children with disabilities and from all backgrounds? Co-host Brian shares about some recent interactions he's had with Ukrainians who've recently come to Canada as we have a dialogue about how to have a dialogue with others around the help they offer for which isn't always so helpful, with Laura sharing a specific interaction with a sighted so-called helper on the street. And speaking of having a dialogue (or not as the case may be), in the second half of the show we let listeners know about a situation between the Triple Vision podcast (exploring the past, present, and future of blindness in Canada), Accessible Media Inc. (AMI), and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) and how necessary dialogue was shut down. While we were climbing a big hill of sand, visiting third co-host Laura Bain attended the Art of Disability Festival put on by Independent Living Nova Scotia. Life's a day at the beach, at least can be for the day in summer. It's August for a few more weeks and we're talking summer activities and so much more as we look ahead to fall. And for more on the Triple Vision situation with AMI and the CNIB, along with so many other history of blindness in Canada topics, check out the new independent home for Triple Vision's podcast here: http://triplevision.team Note: The episodes we refer to involving CNIB/AMI include TV 32 - CNIB Governance with Kate Bahne from Charity Intelligence and TV 35 - Entrepreneurship by the Triple Vision Team. Triple Vision is also available wherever you get your podcasts. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/412 Presented By:  Yellowstone Teton, Chota Outdoor Gear, Dalton - Country Financial, Mavrk Fly Fishing Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors Joseph Jackson, author of It's Only Fishing book, is here to talk about Alaska fishing by car. We hear about some of the less-known places you can add to your itinerary if you're heading into the 49th state. We break down the species list, what to bring, best times and places to hit while road-tripping Alaska highways. We also talk about his passion for writing. We find out why he likes to focus on the whys and not the how-tos when he writes. He tells us his favorite John Gierach quote and that one question he wants to ask John. Show Notes with Joseph Jackson 03:00 - We had the other Joe Jackson, aka Sgt. Bassfisher in episode 384 where we talked about tying poppers and cartoon flies. 11:00 - Alaska's interior is a secluded small stream where you can catch world-class grayling. Anything North of the Alaska range is Alaska's interior. 16:30 - Joe breaks down the places you can drive and the best time to target grayling, trout, and kings. 19:00 - Late August and early September is the perfect time to fish anywhere if you're not focusing on any species and want to cast your rod on any water. 26:15 - Joe talks about the stuff you can do along Steese Highway. He talks about doing a little hunting too. 28:30 - July is the busiest fishing time of the year in Alaska. 32:30 - Joe noted Delta Junction as a beautiful place to be in. Also the Copper River Valley in Glennallen. 41:00 - Two important things to bring when road-tripping the Alaska highways: 2 extra tires and at least 20 gallons of gas. 44:20 - Joe's first book, "It's Only Fishing" was about being a road system angler. 53:10 - Joe noted one of John Gierach's famous quotes, "You could say the same thing about fishing that they say about baseball... it takes an adult to play the game well but it takes a kid to think that it's important". JG was on the podcast in episode 407. 56:00 - Joe's got a question for John Gierach... "What does he see as true success in writing?" 57:00 - We hear about what his next book will be about. 1:02:00 - Writing about Yakutat was one of the most challenging things for Joe and he tells us why. 1:10:20 - Joe noted TU and Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. 1:12:30 - Grab a copy of Gunner Peterson's Highway Angler. It's the bible for roadside fishing in Alaska. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/412
