This week's Deadpod came from a request from Tyler, a friend of the pod, who wanted to hear this classic summer stadium show from 1989. This is from Giants Stadium on July 9, 1989. The band is fired up and ready to satisfy what I'm sure was a loud and raucous crowd, opening with the classic 'Shakedown Street' and then an uptempo 'Jack Straw'. Things slow down a bit with 'West L.A. Fadeaway' then take a darker turn with the relatively new 'Victim or the Crime'. 'Brown-Eyed Women' and 'Queen Jane' straighten things back up, and they close this first set with a sweet 'Bird Song'.      Grateful Dead Giants Stadium East Rutherford, NJ 7/9/1989 - Sunday One      Shakedown Street [13:01]   Jack Straw [5:39]   West L.A. Fadeaway [7:31]   Victim Or The Crime [7:12]   Brown Eyed Women [5:24]   Queen Jane Approximately [5:45]   Bird Song [11:17]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod071423.mp3 Stay cool! and many thanks for your kind supporrt!!

This week's Deadpod brings us the second set of the band's fine performance at Cal Expo on May 4, 1991. They continue what has been a solid show, opening with the perhaps odd choice of 'Victim or the Crime'. That darkness has to give however as they then move onto a wonderful 'Crazy Fingers' and 'Playin In the Band'. It sounds for a bit at the end of the latter that they will move into Drums, but Jerry and Phil instead turn the sound around to a nice version of  'Uncle John's Band'.  Post-drums features a strong 'Miracle' into a fine version of 'Standing on the Moon'. I find this to be a great version of this powerful tune, as Garcia and company show how they've infused this song with the power and passion that makes it one of the great later day ballads in their repertoire.  Being Saturday, they then close the set with 'One More Saturday Night' and return with a 'Touch' encore.  I think its a fine set and hope you enjoy it as well.  Grateful Dead Cal Expo Amphitheatre Sacramento, CA  5/4/91 - Saturday Two     Victim Or The Crime ; Crazy Fingers ; Playing In The Band ; Uncle John's Band > Drums > Space > I Need A Miracle > Standing On The Moon ; One More Saturday Night Encore     Touch Of Grey  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050721.mp3    'oh oh what I want to know, where does the time go?"   thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod

This week we do a little carryover from Fat Tuesday with this Mardi Gras set from February 7, 1989 at the Kaiser in Oakland California.  The set starts with the sounds of the Mardi Gras parade, backed of course by Mickey and Billy on drums. The band starts with a rather unique introduction to Iko, Iko, but its certainly a good choice for the date. The 'Victim' that follows starts as a total train wreck, but does settle down into a trancelike beat. Brent's 'We Can Run' follows, with its warning that seems as ominous as ever. A nice 'Uncle John's Band' takes us into drums. A nice 'Wheel' flows out of Space, and the post-drums highlight to my ears is a fine version of 'Foolish Heart'. 'Good Lovin' closes the set, but Jerry gives us a nice 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' to end the evening and this fine recording.   Grateful Dead February 7, 1989 - Tuesday Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center - Oakland, CA Two     Iko Iko ; Victim Or The Crime ; We Can Run ; Uncle John's Band ; Drums ; Space ; The Wheel ; Throwing Stones ; Foolish Heart ; Good Lovin' Encore     Knockin' On Heaven's Door    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod021921.mp3  thank you my friends for your kind support

In this week’s episode we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 17 from the Boston Garden in Boston, MA on September 25, 1991. In addition, this show features two bonus tracks from Charlotte, NC on March 31, 1991. Midway through a fantastic run at the Garden, and in some of the last shows the band would play with Bruce Hornsby, this is a great peek into the consistency of The Dead in 1991, and the benefits of playing extended gigs during this period. Steve & Rob are joined by Dead Archivist, David Lemieux, who made this his first pick in the series, for a fantastic conversation about the Grateful Dead organization & his approach to picking releases. Disco One opens with a hot “Help -> Slip -> Franklin’s” before “It Must Have Been The Roses” and “Dire Wolf” provide the surprise Double Jerry dip. Disc Two flows with jamming precision. Kicking off with the dimly lit “Victim Or The Crime,” the disc peaks with the “Playing -> Terrapin” jam session, which only goes to showcase the similarities of the two songs. Disc Three opens with the rare cover of Paul McCartney’s “That Would Be Something,” before diving into an endless run of Set Closers. The bonus material is highlighted by one of the best “Eyes Of The World” of the 90’s, and one of the best versions of it we’ve featured on the show. An absolute gem to spin, it showcases the experimental communication of the Hornsby years. 36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. It is edited and produced and mastered by Brian Brinkman. I decided to close out March with a really fun and energetic show from the Spring of 1989. This comes to us from March 31st, 1989 at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro North Carolina. While there are no extended jams in this week's first set, the playing throughout is exceptionally energetic and quite fun to listen to. Some of the highlights for me are the fine version of 'Peggy O', the spirited 'Me & My Uncle>Big River' and Loser. The set closing 'Standing on the Moon' had yet to develop into the blockbuster ballad it would become, but I still enjoy this rendition. I've always enjoyed the band during this period, as they were really cresting from 89 through 90.. I hope you enjoy this as well.      Grateful Dead Greensboro Coliseum Greensboro, NC 3/31/89 - Friday   One   Hell In A Bucket ; Sugaree ; New Minglewood Blues ; Peggy-O ; Me And My Uncle > Big River ; Loser ; Victim Or The Crime ; Standing On The Moon   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032919.mp3   my thanks for your support of the Deadpod!    Be well and enjoy life :)

This week's second set from May 26th, 1993 features believe it or not probably the finest version of Playin' in the late 90s era. This is a real scorcher and the drums in the middle of the sandwich is very tasty as well.. Crazy Fingers is also quite nice and I'm a fan of almost any China Dolls... I hope you'll give this one a listen I am sure you won't regret it..
