En banlieue de Beyrouth, au tribunal des chrétiens maronites, ce sont les lois du Vatican qui s'appliquent. Ici impossible de divorcer, seule une annulation du mariage peut être décidée sur des critères très restrictifs et après plusieurs rendez-vous pour tenter de réunir le couple. Mona Khoueiry, responsable du centre de réconciliation du tribunal maronite de Beyrouth : « Notre objectif, c'est de se réconcilier, de trouver une issue pour la famille, de garder le noyau familial. » Les violences conjugales ne sont pas un motif pour défaire les liens sacrés. Au final, c'est le juge qui tranche.   Monseigneur Alwan se félicite de ne compter que 10% d'annulation de mariage : « Le système confessionnel aide beaucoup à ne pas aller au divorce facilement. Pas comme le divorce civil, s'ils se mettent d'accord pour divorcer, ils divorcent.
