Imagine you're the person that could have bought Amazon stock for $18.00 per share or maybe Microsoft at $21 per share, better still, Facebook, Coca-Cola, and Apple at their initial public offerings. Now, imagine you could have bought into any of those kinds of PHENOMENALLY profitable companies BEFORE they went public. Finally, imagine you did just that, got in on the ground floor, and still...somehow...managed to come out on the losing end. This is that story.GET THE BOOK FROM AMAZON: The Best of The Best of Uncle John's Bathroom ReaderGET THE BOOK FROM AN INDEPENDENT BOOK SELLER: The Best of The Best of Uncle John's Bathroom ReaderBECOME AN Elton Reads A Book A Week CONTRIBUTOR HERE:Elton Reads A Book A Week PatreonTips!SOCIAL MEDIA! In this episode of the Black Magic Woman Podcast, I sit down with Uncle John Anderson, at the First Nations Clean Energy Network Summit on Kabi Kabi Country. Uncle John shares his journey from his saltwater connections on Palm Island and Innisfail to his work across western Queensland and Brisbane, leading independent and regulatory bodies with integrity and cultural strength. Together, we yarn about the importance of cultural protocols, what it means to be an “honourable ancestor,” and how First Nations knowledge offers powerful lessons for the future of clean energy and coexistence. Uncle John reflects on the legacy of elders, the responsibilities of relationship-building, and the deep wisdom of living and working the “proper way.” This is a powerful conversation about respect, diplomacy, and the role of First Nations peoples in shaping a more sustainable future for all. Todd Ogasawara and Jon Westfall covered a range of interesting topics, from real-world natural disasters to the cutting edge of AI development and personal tech. Todd shared his recent experience during a statewide tsunami alert in Hawaii, triggered by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia. While initial information was well-managed, he highlighted significant issues with traffic chaos during evacuation and a concerning lack of information post-wave impact. On the technology front, Todd discussed Google Notebook LM, praising its ability to create succinct summaries and slideshows with voiceovers from source material. He also introduced Google Opal, a new experimental tool from Google Labs that allows users to build and share powerful AI mini-apps using natural language and visual editing, describing it as a "step beyond Visual Basic" for accelerating AI prototyping and workflows. Jon Westfall also shared his recent tech purchases and an exciting new project. He acquired an 8Bitdo Micro Bluetooth Gamepad, a pocket-sized mini-controller weighing just 24.8 grams with 16 buttons. Its versatility allows it to function as a game controller for Switch, Android, and Raspberry Pi, or as a keyboard mode device for various applications, including as a remote for his new Kobo Libra Colour eReader. The Kobo Libra Colour features a 7" E Ink Kaleido™ 3 color display and Kobo Stylus 2 compatibility for colorful mark-ups and note-taking, with notebooks backed up to Kobo Cloud, Dropbox, or Google Drive. Jon also unveiled his open-source project, Uncle John's Bank, a self-hostable banking system for parents and kids designed to teach financial literacy, notably incorporating daily compounding interest and Certificates of Deposit (CDs). This sophisticated project was developed remarkably fast (75 hours) thanks to extensive use of OpenAI Codex, which integrated directly with his GitHub repository, even writing developer documentation. However, Jon noted a peculiar issue where GitHub Copilot (AI) reviewing Codex (AI)-generated code sometimes caused new problems, suggesting limitations in AI-to-AI code interaction. Finally, Jon shared intriguing results from asking various AIs (Google Gemini, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Anthropic Claude) for investment advice, observing their diverse recommendations and risk appetites.
Bands Across America: Northern California Grateful Dead – Workingman's Dead (1970) & Journey – Frontiers (1983)Our journey lands in Northern California—home of counterculture trailblazers, iconic inventions, and musical legends. We spotlight two classic albums from Bay Area giants and dig into what makes the region an endless well for music lovers and explorers alike. What's Inside- Grateful Dead – Workingman's Dead (1970): Palo Alto's Grateful Dead hit a milestone with their fourth studio record—an earthy blend of roots, folk, and country rock, produced by Bob Matthews, Betty Cantor, and the band. We explore how the Dead's acoustic turn, everyday storytelling, and songs like “Black Peter” cemented their place in California music folklore. Lyrical highlights emphasize belonging and transcendence, from Uncle John as a spiritual guide to meditations on life and death.- Journey – Frontiers (1983): Born from the Bay Area's vibrant scene, Journey evolved from jazz-fusion beginnings to arena rock titans. Their 1983 album, Frontiers—driven by soaring Steve Perry vocals and Jonathan Cain's songwriting—pushed into cinematic, synth-heavy rock and delivered some of the era's most enduring pop anthems. It rocketed to #2 on Billboard, sporting unforgettable hits and an iconic music video.- Deep Question Other treasures from Northern California-Diggin'- Bush – I Beat Loneliness (2025): London's alt-rock veterans return with their 10th album, diving into emotional isolation and healing over powerful riffs and raw confessionals. Standouts: “Scars,” “The Land of Milk and Honey,” “We're All the Same on the Inside,” and lead single “60 Ways to Forget People.”- Tears For Fears – Songs from the Big Chair (1985, Vinyl): The British duo's classic, released February 25, 1985, expands their synthpop sound into grand pop-rock storytelling. Includes anthems “Shout,” “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” and “Head Over Heels.”- Limberlost – Beautiful Scars (2025): Seattle's female-fronted rockers blend classic rock, soul, blues, and alternative on their third studio album, spotlighting dual vocalists Brittany Lauren and Sammie Gorham, and the track “Alien.”- Greet Death – Die In Love (2025): Flint, Michigan slowcore/shoegaze trio's third album finds a more balanced emotional perspective, centered on themes of love, loss, and living fully.Discover more great album picks, deep cuts, and passionate music discussion every week on the Six Picks Music Club! What do you think about these Northern California classics or our Six Picks selections? This week we return to Hartford Connecticut for the second set of the band's performance on April 17, 1982. This set starts out with a smokin' 'Shakedown Street' featuring some exuberant Brent runs and interplay with Garcia. They then go into a top version of 'Sailor>Saint' which culminates in a bit of a Spanish Jam before leading into Drums and Space. 'Uncle John's Band' comes out of Space, not a usual occurance, and leads too into a hot 'Not Fade Away'. 'Wharf Rat' takes the ballad spot, and they rock out with 'Around and Around'; into a killer 'One More Saturday Night'. You might notice there are no stops between these second set songs on this night. The encore, "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' has some great Garcia vocals..
