Boulder rockers The Velveteers released their self-titled debut EP this week. The sibling duo of singer/guitarist Demi and drummer John Demitro gained a large following last year: They played to packed houses at the 2017 Westword Music Showcase and Underground Music Showcase, and Westword readers voted them Colorado's "Best Rock Band" for their high-octane blend of punk and garage rock. The Velveteers stopped into the CPR Performance Studio to play four songs with additional drumming from Noah Shomberg of The Yawpers. They also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about their first international tour, the challenges of being a young rock band in Boulder and how the film "Edward Scissorhands" influenced the new EP.

"I have much respect for Tobias, He is the future of Denver music (from the event side)" This was a quote from a friend of mine regarding Tobias Krause. I received this text about an hour before Tobias arrived at my house for the taping of this show and a couple hours later, I found myself agreeing with every word of that statement. Tobias is another one of those guys whose name all of us have known for a few years now...even those who have never spoken a direct word with the man. He is a promoter, he is a talent buyer, he is an event manager, a journalist, a musician, a writer. A man of many hats, Tobias is quickly becoming one of the most influential individuals in the Denver art scenes. This is why I have wanted to have him on the show for so long, and as expected...the conversation was wonderful and informative. Listen as I sit with Tobias and talk about his musical past, his journalistic past, and his event management world of today. Tobias has been the one to shape the Westword Music Showcase for the last 2 years. He talks about the ins and outs of how that important Denver music festival is put together (this part is a must listen for any Denver musician!) He also chats about his involvement in the Denver restaurant scene, the Denver Beer scene, the Denver Craft scene...if something involves creativity and Denver, Tobias Krause seems to be an influential part of it. One thing I took away from this conversation...we need more people like Tobias. He is one of the ones that brings the organization, the resources, and the passion to these Denver events that allow our city's arts to shine. We all owe people like Tobias a beer (after all, he probably threw a festival that helped promote your favorite new brewery). Official Site: www.twoparts.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/twopartsco The song for this episode is called The Truth by one of Tobias' favorite Denver bands, Rossonion Listen above and as always, subscribe direct on iTunes and RSS. This episode was graciously sponsored by Renegade Brewing Company! Visit their taproom on 9th and Santa Fe or pick up their wonderful assortment of beer at any local liquor store.

This week I was thrilled to have Katie Moulton and Kiernan Maletsky on the show. Kiernan is the outgoing and Katie is the incoming Music Editor for The Denver Westword. The Denver Westword is the primary Arts and Entertainment Alt Weekly in Denver. It's importance to the local music scene can't be understated. In many ways, for good or bad, The Westword guides the conversation here in Denver. As such, the role of Music Editor for a city's Alt Weekly is an important one. Simply put, the music editor directs the focus of the paper's scene coverage. This was a wonderful and very informative chat. We discussed both Katie's and Kiernan's histories in music and writing and their path to their current roles. We also talked about the details and controversies (and cleared up many misconceptions) about the Westword Music Showcase. We discussed ways that The Westword has been vital to the growth of the local scene as well as ways that it might be able to improve. Since Katie is so new to the scene I had Kiernan pick this weeks track and he chose Denver favorite, Megan Burtt. The track is called "It Ain't Love" and can be snatched up as part of her album of the same name ore direct on Bandcamp. Listen above and as always, subscribe direct on iTunes and Rss.

Reason The Citizen is a Denver-by-way-of-San Diego rapper that I've followed since I first caught his captivating Westword Music Showcase 3 years ago. Growing up in San Diego, Richard John Martinelli found himself immersed in Skate and Hip Hop culture. Paired with an introduction to a speaking and debate club in High School he suddenly realized that he had a love for linguistics and wordplay that would come to define his art. Listen above as we discuss Reason's navigation through both the San Diego and Denver hip hop scenes. We also talk some of the differences between the hip hop and rock scenes, opening for larger acts (NAS, Mac Miller, Macklemore, Ghostface Killah), knowing when to move to a new city/market in order to open up opportunities, and how having a child impacts your drive and decisions when it comes to your craft.
