Twenty years ago I got an iPod. The rest as they say is history. Having published a mod fanzine in So Cal in the 80s, and then a website in the 90s devoted to mod style and cocktail culture, I was predisposed to be intrigued by this new fangled publishing medium called a podcast. I dove in head first on May 26, 2006 with the very first episode of It's A Mod Mod World, which quickly got rebranded to Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World. Now here we are 20 years and 600 shows later. I'm joined by some old mates from the Positive Steps scooter club to talk scooters, concerts and music both old and new. Is there a new mod renaissance upon us? That is the question I've been asking myself since last year. Sitting in Seattle casting my jaundiced eye on the scene from afar I ask you: is London swinging again? Over the years claims of new mod revivals have been made, and almost never supported, especially in the 21st century. I dive deep into the subject, here's my research and my opinion. In lieu of our latest episode on Phantom Planet's "The Guest" from 2002, we're dropping a Rewind on an episode that was released way back in July of 2020, where we cover their self-titled album that came just two years later. Phantom Planet was once most notably known as the group that sings that song from The O.C. (you know, the one that goes "California, here we come!"). But on their 2004 self-titled record, they traded in those melodic, poppy song structures for a more frenetic, fuzz-driven garage sound. In this episode, Charles interviews filmmaker and vinyl enthusiast Steve Herold, best known for the award-winning short film Death of an Umbrella Salesman. Steve takes us back to the summer of 1984 and his first concert — the Thompson Twins on their Into the Gap tour at the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey. He shares how the show almost didn't happen, thanks to a failed attempt to see Van Halen at Madison Square Garden, and how that near-miss planted the seed for a lifetime of concert-going. The real coming-of-age concert moment, Steve admits, came two years later when he finally saw David Lee Roth on his debut solo tour — a far wilder introduction to arena rock than the Thompson Twins had provided. Steve opens up about his most memorable concert experiences, including his best-ever shows: the New Jersey alternative band Dramarama at the legendary Fast Lane in Asbury Park in the early '90s. Those packed, sweat-soaked club nights — where getting to the bathroom was nearly impossible and crowd surfing was mandatory — turned Steve into a devoted fan and shaped his love of small-venue rock. He also recounts the 1996 Sex Pistols reunion at New York's Roseland Ballroom, an evening of full-on debauchery that ended with him and a friend finding a $50 bill on the floor — money that had fallen from the pockets of crowd surfers — and heading out to continue the night on someone else's dime. The image of punk-show attendees pouring out of Roseland and colliding with Broadway theatergoers on the sidewalk is one of the episode's most vivid moments. Beyond concerts, the conversation dives into Steve's YouTube channel, where he has spent years showcasing his vinyl and CD collection and visiting independent record stores during his travels for TV production work. He reflects on how the channel introduced him to a whole new community of fellow collectors — friendships that have taken him to record stores in Reno, Southern California, Long Island, and Charleston, South Carolina. Steve also discusses his filmmaking work, including the upcoming documentary about a former Hot Tuna drummer who is also a visual artist, and two music videos he directed for his friend's garage rock band Manflesh, one of which is set to screen at the Coney Island Film Festival. The episode wraps with a shared appreciation for the Wet Leg concert both Charles and Steve attended in 2025, and a laugh-out-loud detour into the chaotic legacy of G.G. Allin. The legendary queen of the blues Koko Taylor died a little more than a week ago, and that sparked me to dig out and revisit some my old blues, esepcially the British blues of the sixties, the early R&B. London's blues scene in the late 50s and early sixties spawned a number of bands and musicians that went on to great fame, many with very mod sounds - Rolling Stones, Georgie Fame, Them, the Animals, the Yardbirds and so on . And No doubt Ms. Koko Taylor was an inspiration to sixties mods who were blending the blues with rock, and jazz with soul, and creating radically new sorts of sounds. The thumping, pumping, Telecaster-driven, snare-smashing roots rock and roll of the 80's (and into the 90's) shaped my world.  Drove my inspiration for finding more of "that". Looking back, some of "that" lasted. And some of the bands and their songs went into the vault of lost rockers, and some even made it out to rock some more.   This podcast jumps back about 10 years to when I was digging into the roots of my rock and roll, which would later be labeled alt-country and Americana. New year, new music. But what about last year's great music? Here's a last hurrah for some of the best releases of 2025. These are 20 of my favorites that I listened to on repeat in 2025. So many best of lists are ridiculously long with 200, 250, even 500 releases. What's the point? I like to take my time and actually edit it down to a managable number that means something. It's not easy, there are some bands that didn't make the cut, but were so very close and truly deserving. But not everything can be a favorite, because again, what would be the point? In their conversation Brian tells us about his current tour with Paul McCartney and his Gibson models as well as his vintage yet eclectic guitar collection, guitars with special features and odd colors. Brian talks about his friend Steve Conte and their project “Earls of Babylon” and the resulting EP. Brian discusses his love for Garage Rock and gives us a quick history. Brian takes us through his musical and childhood journey in LA traveling with his sister who was in a band and preforming throughout the area and himself performing at the Troubadour at the age of 15. Brian discusses starting on drums and his red sparkle Rogers kit and his first real guitar a telecaster and then a gold top Gibson Les Paul played through an Ampeg V4. Brian describes his career highlights, playing guitar for Bobby Pickett (the Monster Mash), Etta James, Rita Coolidge, Johnny Halliday and of course Paul McCartney and writing songs for Smokey Robinson. Brian talks about his touring gear throughout the years including what he's currently using and the techs he uses to keep his gear up. Finally Brian tells us about his hot rod and his love of car shows. On this episode, we honour the 60s music of our home province, Alberta. We start on Jasper Avenue in Edmonton with two songs by The King-Beezz: a cover of The Kinks' "I Gotta Move" and their original "Found & Lost." Then we drive down Highway 2 to Calgary to hear The 49th Parallel's "Laborer." Maybe we'll stop at Peter's for a burger and shake before we go back to Edmonton and the rooftops of the local A&W drive-in's for "There Ain't No About It" by The Lords - Weldon's Mom & Dad used to dance to these cats at Varsity Hall in Sylvan Lake and at Ma-Me-O Beach! The final song is not garage or soul, but it was a big hit by Calgary's Original Caste - the ubiquitious oldies station staple "One Tin Soldier." Now get out of town!!
