His music inspired me to play more Jazz Funk in my sets and his amazing journey across 6 decades of amazing music gave us the soundtrack to our lives. The Who? Roy Edward Ayers Jr. (September 10, 1940 – March 4, 2025) was an American vibraphonist, record producer, and composer. Ayers began his career as a post-bop jazz artist, releasing several studio albums with Atlantic Records, before his tenure at Polydor Records beginning in the 1970s, during which he helped pioneer jazz-funk. He is a key figure in the acid jazz movement, and has been described as "The Godfather of Neo Soul". He is best known for his compositions "Everybody Loves the Sunshine", "Lifeline", and "No Stranger to Love" and others that charted in the 1970s. At one time Ayers was listed among the performers whose music was most often sampled by rappers. Dass die vom Quartett Paper Thieves vorgeschlagene neue Erweiterung der Liste um eine Gegenüberstellung von Gott und Ei dennoch mehr als willkommen ist, liegt nicht zuletzt am spannenden Sound der Band aus Berlin: Auf ihrem kommende Woche erscheinenden Debütalbum "The God Or The Egg" bewegen sich die vier um Sängerin und Texterin Leah Christensen zwischen atmosphärischem Pop mit psychedelischen Anklängen und elegantem Neo-Soul. Dass die Musiker:innen mit Wurzeln in Neuseeland, der Türkei und Deutschland trotz bald zehnjährigen Bandbestehens (und nach diversen Singles und EPs sowie zahlreichen Konzerten) "erst" jetzt ihr Langspieler-Debüt vorlegen, ist zum Teil Corona geschuldet.
