There's been no stopping Wri Donna this year with her first 3 releases off the new EP, pushing her firmly into rock music territory. Today, we're finally at the home stretch as she unleashes her sophomore EP “In My Chambers” and prepares to head out on the road, through Nov & Dec, with her full band, to celebrate the release! Wiri Donna's Debut EP , “Being Alone', released in 2022, was her first foray into truly speaking her mind via her music, touching on some pretty heavy topics, expertly done, with some solid musicality from this talented artist. The release was adored across the indies, acclaimed by media and fans, resulted in her being named as one of Rolling Stone AU/NZ‘s Eight Kiwi Artist Tipped to Take Over in early 2023 and was nominated for the Taite Music Prize's “Best Independent Debut'. However, Wiri Donna spent the better part of 2 years post this release, taunting us with something darker in the works.
This podcast is a proud media partner of Jewish Futures, a day-long arts and culture salon for Jewish arts workers, hosted by the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto on Nov. 24. The 2024 program emphasizes networking, communal learning and the exploration of Jewish artistic identity, providing a foundation for building resilience and leadership for Toronto's Jewish cultural community. Learn more and get your tickets here. Joseph Landau didn't grow up speaking Yiddish—but something about the language compelled him. Whenever he spent time with his grandfather, Landau would ask him to translate certain words, slowly building a vocabulary. He joined WhatsApp groups that communicated in the language, sought out secular Yiddish-speaking communities and eventually began speaking Yiddish to his own young son. That journey, not coincidentally, has dovetailed with Landau's musical career. As the driving force behind Yosl and the Yingels, Landau writes original songs—entirely in Yiddish—that blend jazz and folk melodies with classic klezmer motifs. Their debut EP, Zikhroynes, releases Nov. 15, 2024._ Landau joins the hosts of Culturally Jewish to discuss life in the Yiddish-speaking arts world, from the politics of klezmer retreats to the reaction of non-Jewish audiences across the city of Toronto. On October 18, Isabel Dumaa will triumphantly release her debut EP Just My Nature. The title, borrowed from a yet to be released track, isn't a resignation, but rather a declaration of acceptance. Dumaa has wanted to be a singer since she could talk. As a child, she would subject her family to living room concerts, and as she entered her teens, she became a regular in the San Francisco circuit. Determined to pursue music as a career, Dumaa, armed with a journal full of vulnerable confessions, promptly took off for LA after graduation. However, despite this lifelong dream, and success, the rising artist couldn't escape imposter syndrome, as detailed in her 2021 debut “Call My Bluff.” The heartfelt track was the beginning of a two year journey to reconcile those feelings and uncover the confidence to embrace herself. We spoke with Dumaa ahead of the release to chat about the album, which features previous releases "Quarter Life Crisis," "C'est La Vie," and "Enough for You,” self-acceptance, and more. Sad Boys For Real. R&B Singer, Jaas, slides to PVTSCK, to discuss her hiatus from music after her Debut EP, non-traditional view on cheating, toxic relationships, and learning & practicing self-love. In the song, "Unavailable," Jaas sings, "Pain is love, you know you taught me first / So I think I'll wash my hands with." A feeling that is all too familiar to everyone; even those who are too prideful to admit it. Through this experience, we learn what we will accept from love, as well as reject from it. For Jaas, she realized that her self-worth comes from more than just relationships & wholeness won't come from solely another individual. Jaas explores the concept of love through her music, and allows it to tell her story to a T. She chases her passion to the very end, and won't let anybody stop her from being the star she's meant to be. Also discussed, working with Chris Classick, Briefly living in Atlanta, Influence of growing up around males, and Finding her Purpose in Chicago.
