Alan Watts - Far Beyond the West - Modern Philosophy, Eastern Philosophy, Zen, Buddhism, Hindu Philosophy, Tao, Taoism Alan Watts provides insights into how to break through this veil that holds us back & does so in an easy to comprehend, yet profound manner. Watts discusses the struggle for those who "drop-out" of society to pursue becoming a monk or Buddhist, within the parameters our society runs on now. Within the many layers of thoughts we have, there is a fight and a struggle which pays off through the journey itself. On a day-to-day basis, especially those pursuing yoga & meditation as a means to find spiritual balance, we struggle to find the center and the purpose in which the profound images of God and connection exist. We must break through our veil of thoughts that trap us and confine us from moving forward. Watts continues the discussion on the various roles and purposes which music, comedy, art, and the idea of the performer or "The Joker" plays within our culture. The Hindu concept of Game Theory is the primary philosophy discussed in this episode. Eastern Philosophy such as Confucianism and Taoism have a different view on this particular subject, but the Hindu philosophy has been very clear about the idea that it is all a game in which we play each day of our lives. These social institutions that are divided into thousands of smaller parts of a larger whole, help to create conventions and agreements which we develop within ourselves and with each other, in order to create order, agreement and harmony. The role of the joker and art is a symbiotic relationship, which gives and takes from culture and our societal status quo. Each piece of the fabric of our society seems to be separated from the rest, such as an entertainer, however, that role the musician plays actually constitutes a much bigger part of the network or the universal whole. The parts of the "network" don't come from outside of itself, they come from within. This is a give away that the entire thing is a process and is only a game. It has no other object other than to be doing what it's doing. BUT, it does play parts and varies itself, which creates what we refer to as illusions that the parts are separate from each other. Instead, these various games are all interconnected and part of a much greater organism. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theenthusiasts/support
Watts' seems to evoke the joker role himself by utilizing his hilarious, yet insightful sense of humor, which simplifies challenging philosophical topics and makes it fun & entertaining! Watts discusses the various roles and purposes which artists, music, comedy, art, and the idea of the performer or "The Joker" plays within our culture. Watts begins by equating the role of "The Joker" with the outlaw and rebel who exists on the fringes of society, but still plays a vital role in the larger picture. They do this in many ways such as: rejecting the status quo, their governments and social institutions, as well as challenging their society's commonly held beliefs. Much of this exciting and thought provoking episode is derived from the Hindu concept of Game Theory, which centers around the idea that all of life is a game in which we play, each day of our lives. This one will make you laugh and blow your mind at the same time! Watts' seems to evoke the joker role himself by utilizing his hilarious, yet insightful sense of humor, which simplifies challenging philosophical topics and makes it fun & entertaining! The episode starts out with a surprising and somewhat disturbing cacophony of noise, which is the sound of a person speaking "I love you" but being distorted and altered to create this unnerving affect. This episode focuses on our ability to reach the point of being completely incapable of doing anything with true sincerity, which is actually a great discovery. The discovery that you are a fake. The more you understand yourself, the more you tear layer down to layer of skin, you're able to truly discover the nature of who you really are and what you're actually capable of. This episode features different chants and prayers, recited by different types of Native tribes, which help bring that sense of spirituality and oneness that Watts discusses throughout his many different books and lectures. The Eastern Philosophy model, along with the use of psychedelics, meditation, Buddhist, Hindu, and Confucianism are all brought to life through Watts exuberant tone of voice and create an excitement for the subject matter being discussed. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theenthusiasts/support
