This week we have an appointment to keep... with The Wicker Man. The Wicker Man is a 1973 cult British horror film directed by Robin Hardy and starring Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, and Christopher Lee. The screenplay by Anthony Shaffer, inspired by David Pinner's 1967 novel Ritual, centers on the visit of Police Sergeant Neil Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle in search of a missing girl. Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find that the inhabitants of the island have abandoned Christianity and now practice a form of Celtic paganism. The film is well-regarded by critics and has been described as "The Citizen Kane of horror movies". In 2006, a poorly received (and ill-conceived) American remake was released starring Nicholas Cage, which Hardy and others involved with the original dissociated themselves from. In 2011, a spiritual sequel directed by Hardy entitled The Wicker Tree was released and featured Lee in a cameo appearance. Mozina's Knotting the Banner: Ritual and Relationship in Daoist Practice (U Hawaii Press, 2021) weaves together ethnography, textual analysis, photography, and film, inviting readers into the religious world of Daoist practice in today's south China by exploring one particular ritual called the Banner Rite to Summon Sire Yin, as practiced in central Hunan province. Performed as the first public ritual by a Daoist apprentice at his own ordination, the Banner Rite seeks to summon Celestial Lord Yin Jiao, the ferocious martial deity who supplies the exorcistic power to protect and heal bodies and spaces from illness and misfortune. A lot is at stake. If the apprentice cannot successfully summon the deity in front of his village community and the pantheon of gods in attendance, he would not be able to be ordained that day and would risk losing the confidence of villagers who might hire him in the future. Through a close reading of the ritual in its social and historical contexts, Mozina shows that the efficacy of rituals like the Banner Rite is driven by the ability of a master to form an intimate relationship with exorcistic deities like Yin Jiao, which is far from guaranteed. Mozina reveals the ways in which such ritual claims are rooted in the great liturgical movements of the Song and Yuan dynasties (960–1368) and how they are performed these days amid the social and economic pressures of rural life in the post-Mao era. Knotting the Banner will be of interest to students and scholars of Daoism and Chinese religion and will also appeal to historians of religion and anthropologists, especially those working on ritual. Noelle Giuffrida is a professor and curator of Asian art at the School of Art and the David Owsley Museum of Art at Ball State University. Her research focuses on Chinese art, particularly the history of collecting and exhibiting premodern works in American museums after World War II and the visual culture of Daoism in late imperial China. Her teaching and curatorial experience extend broadly both temporally—from Neolithic to contemporary—and cross-culturally to China, Korea, and Japan, as well as to South and Southeast Asia. Her book Separating Sheep from Goats: Sherman E. Lee's Collecting of Chinese Art in Postwar America (University of California Press, 2018) uses American curator and museum director Sherman E. TODAY'S GUEST Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie is an Israeli-born, Jewish educator, writer, and performance artist. He's the creator of Storahtelling, Inc. and the founding spiritual leader of Lab/Shul in NYC, an artist-driven, everybody friendly, God-optional, pop-up experimental community for sacred Jewish gatherings. Amichai is a member of the Global Justice Fellowship of the American Jewish World Service, a founding member of the Jewish Emergent Network, serves on the Leadership Council of the New York Jewish Agenda, the Advisory Council of the International School for Peace - a Refugee Support Project in Greece, a member of the Advisory Council for the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, and is a faculty member of the Reboot Network. Through all his endeavors, he brings a creative, inclusive, and vital energy to Jewish practice and Jewish life. EPISODE SUMMARY In this conversation we talk about: How the Jewish concept of the set table served both as a happy early memory, and as an organizing principle for his later work. How Covid 19 made rituals and online communities more important than ever. His orthodox roots as the scion of an ancient and respected rabbinical dynasty, and his journey of self discovery through theater, drag, and art. His creation of storytelling, a way to bring to life the ancient ritual of the reading of the Torah, and the Maven Method he developed to spread the practice further. The emergence of Lab/Shul and the community around it. The power of spiritual design and a well-designed practice in transforming our lives and our communities for the better. We also discuss: How is religion used as a tool in the service of humanity? What happens if you bring scripture to the 21st century as a performance? Why is the tribal wisdom of small circles within a bigger circle so important? I've long believed that one of the most promising avenues to apply design skills and creativity to is in designing communities, social rituals, and spiritual practice that suits the modern world. And, as such, there's no one I can think of that exemplifies this better than Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie. I think this conversation, which is full of wisdom and fun, is a great introduction to exactly the type of spiritual design we need to see more of. So let's jump right in with Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie. When seven men were gunned down in a Chicago garage in 1929, their killers thought nothing of it. After all, they had been engaged in a hostile war against each other, and the victims were merely collateral damage. What they didn't expect, though, was that these killings would mark the end of the powerful grip that they had over American society. With these seven murders, they managed to topple the organized crime syndicates that terrorized the country's citizens. This is the story of the 1929 Valentine's Day Massacre.Visit us online at itsfoulplay.comSupport the show by becoming a Patron at Patreon.com/itsfoulplayEpisode Sponsor: Start your ritual today and get !0% off your first 3 months at Ritual.com/foul
The King and Queen of Paradise are gracing us with their presence to catch us up on what life has been like since they left the beach. Joe and Serena are spilling the deets on when they plan to move in together (and where), what it was like watching the show back as a couple, and what has surprised them most about the other since entering the real world. Kaitlyn asks a question we all had while watching that beautiful engagement: how was Serena not sweating her butt off?! Or, was she? Serena fills us in on what we didn't get to see in the Bachelor in Paradise finale. We wrap with the Newly-Engaged Game, because these cuties aren't newlyweds just yet. How To Manifest Your Dream Reality Looking for how to manifest your dream reality? Check out this episode of Beyond Homo Sapien and learn about the basics of manifestation. Want to learn more about human evolution and how to reach your potential? Check out the blog at http://beyondhomosapien.com/ Learning how to manifest your reality revolves around understanding the willpower. In his book “The Doctrine and Ritual of High Magick”, Eliphas Levi details the importance of the will in magical operations wherein manifestation is the desired outcome. He writes; “Want to learn to rule over yourself and over others? Learn to will”. On this episode of the show, we dive deep into manifestation and how the power of the will is critical in this operation. There are three phases of manifestation that are important to consider: The imagination phase. Want to manifest a new home in the countryside? Go to the country often and walk in the forests to immerse yourself in that reality. Neville Goddard discusses this method of manifestation often in his works and makes the claim that “imagination creates reality”. Want to manifest the world of your dreams and visions? Spend time imaging it and putting yourself physically in that environment as closely as you can. 2. The decision phase. When learning how to manifest, it is imperative that we come to an agreement with the highest part of ourselves and ensure that our manifestation is in alignment with the divine will for our lives. All the while, we must remember that we are the divine expressing itself in a human form. We create and emanate our world and our destiny is one written by our own hand. We must connect with that centerfold part of ourselves deep within and create the world that we came here to build. Want to master the art of manifestation? Learn to connect with your higher self and seek council with all decisions, such that the Great Work can unfold on the Earth and your manifestations can come quickly and with ease. 3. The action phase. Want to manifest something into the physical plane? Learn how to take action towards it every day. Do not let a day go by without moving your energy towards your desires in some way. Want to create a new business? Take action towards that creation each day. While you take these actions, continue with the first two steps and continue to immerse yourself in imagining the experience fulfilled. At the same time, remain in constant council with yourself and ensure your manifestations are in alignment with your divine will. Manifestation does not need to be complicated or difficult. Any time we experience difficulty in a magical operation, it is only because we are not in alignment with ourselves and our true purpose. If you experience a manifestation failing to work out, then ask yourself this: is what you are working to manifest in alignment with your true will? Do you actually WANT what you are working to manifest OR are you just chasing something that does not actually serve your highest good? When we are in alignment with ourselves, manifestation is easy. If we experience struggle, then it is time to surrender to the flow of life and trust the process of the unfolding. Our manifestations are already in the works and created by us and for us since the day we were born.

As we continue to withstand the uncertainty and unease in the world around us, it is so important to establish (or reestablish) routines in your daily life that create a foundation for physical, emotional, and energetic health. In this episode, I touch on some of the most important things you can get disciplined about doing so that you start and end each day with some semblance of stability. Anchoring yourself in healthy habits and small rituals can help you feel some continuity in a world that is providing very little right now. Mediation, exercise, healthy eating, and deep sleep will give you more resilience and flexibility to flow with the waves of disappointment, frustration, and burn-out that you may be experiencing. We are enduring and expanding into an incredible revolutionary time in humanity, but that doesn't mean it's easy to comfortable. Support yourself—and ask for help when needed—so you can show up fully for yourself and others in these trying times. In January 2015, Martin and Teresa Van Breda were enjoying having their oldest son, 22 year old Rudi home from university in Australia. The family's other two children, 20 year old Henri and 16 year old Marli, also lived with their parents in the town of Stellenbosch in the south west of South Africa. Marli was nearing the end of her high school education. Like Rudi, Henri had also been studying in Australia, but dropped out of university and moved back home in 2014, to take a ‘gap year' to reconsider his plans.Like many upper middle class South Africans, the family lived in a secure, gated, luxury housing estate. For all its beauty and cultural diversity, the risks associated with both visiting and living in South Africa are oftentimes confronting. The country is known for its high rates of violent crime, including murder, rape, carjacking, robbery and home invasions. Violent crimes such as home invasions occur not just at night, but at all hours of the day. Many intruders prefer to break into homes when occupants are home, so they can readily hand over concealed valuables while any alarms are deactivated. For many privileged families, opting to live in a gated community with 24 hour security provides reassurance that the risk of home invasions is minimal. This week, we talk about the magic in ritual. Is it truly magic, or is it a psychological change that rearranges how man thinks about life? In this great piece from Brother Akram R. Elias, PGM, we talk about the "magic" of ritual. Then, we'll hear the tale of William Dodd. A Freemason who got into some trouble, forged his signature in order to pay back some debts, and got caught up in a wild tale you're not going to want to miss in an all-new Masonic Minute from Illustrious Brother Steven L. Harrison. We'll wrap it up with a segment from Brother Matt Gallagher in Practical Freemasonry. When we talk about a lodge's retention point, this isn't some magical number that talks about how well your lodge is doing. In fact, it's the point in a man's journey in Freemasonry that he decides it's for him, and he's in for life. So, where is that point in the Masonic journey? As we'll see, it's not necessarily the third degree—all this and more. Stay tuned! App extras include the paper we read. She teaches creative expression and land connection and offers cosmic guidance with Flower Essences, Tarot, Astrology, Magic and Ritual.Today, Amy joins us to talk about her journey to connecting to healing plant spirits, why flowers are the perfect tool to connecting to your creativity, and how you can find inspiration & business support in plants. What do flowers have to do with creativity? (1:10)Amy found in her personal experience that flower essences opened her up to being more creative, and it makes sense because flowers are the highest expression of a plant. When a plant blooms, that's when a plant is expressing itself in all its creativity. There are some esoteric theories about flowers being the cosmic energy of the universe expressed on Earth, and Amy believes they can help us be more in flow and feel more creative because they are the expression of this god or universal energy.“Flowers can help you be more expansive and put yourself out there.” - Amy Heneveld Can people use plant spirit healing at home? (14:19)You can start a relationship with a plant or flower you find in your backyard or out on a hike. You can also access healing plant spirits from anywhere, even if the plants aren't there right now. Amy starts with her clients by using plants they have a history or relationship with already. What are the best plants to communicate with to support business owners? (21:25)Any plant that will help you express yourself, like flowers in general. Amy has a flower essence, Self-Heal, which is designed to heal your throat center and teach you how to express your needs and desires. Yellow flowers like dandelion are also very helpful in finding the strength and confidence to expand your business, it helps us grow and shine our light. Star of Bethlehem is a great plant for when you're just starting out, and can be especially helpful to instill women with a belief in their own divinity and a capacity to channel that divine energy.“There are often parallels between the plants we need and the plants growing around us.” - Amy Heneveld References:Anastasia Ringing Cedars book seriesSelf-Heal Enosburgh Essence flower essenceThyme Enosburgh Essence flower essenceVoriagh Clothing Keep up with Amy:Website: https://www.enosburghessences.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/amysheneveldFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/enosburghessences Let's stay in touch!Join the Business as a Magical Practice private Facebook GroupWatch this episode on YoutubeFollow us on Instagram: @thedirtyalchemyVisit our website: thedirtyalchemy.com
