In this episode of the Psychedelic Medicine Podcast, Ben Malcolm, PharmD joins to discuss the research surrounding the intersection of psychedelics with pregnancy and nursing. Dr. Malcolm is a psychopharmacology consultant, psychedelic educator, founder of Spirit Pharmacist, LLC and a board member of the Psychedelic Medicine Association. Dr. Malcolm recently wrote an overview article on the existing research into psychedelics, pregnancy and breastfeeding. In this conversation, Dr. Malcolm shares the current state of research that he explored in his article, highlighting the few points where data does exist while emphasizing that there are still major unknowns. Overall, Dr. Malcolm describes how most are very conservative when it comes to psychedelic use while nursing or pregnant, though pregnancy seems to present more concerns than nursing. Dr. Malcolm also discusses ketamine and the interesting findings in patients who were given this substance as an anesthetic for cesarean sections. In conclusion, Dr. Malcolm suggests moving beyond a black and white perspective on this topic, emphasizing that there are also opportunity costs to not pursuing healing. However, in this area especially, more research is needed before clear guidelines can be developed. In this episode: The lack of treatment options for postpartum depression Why it is likely for a fetus or infant to be exposed to psychedelics if a mother ingests them while pregnant or nursing Psychedelics and the developing brain Ritual use of ayahuasca and mushrooms among pregnant women in traditional ceremonial contexts The research into negative impacts of ecstasy use during pregnancy and the variables that confound the results The unknowns about microdosing while nursing The research into whether LSD is a teratogen The effects of psychedelics on hormones Pregnancy as an aspect of set and setting Quotes: “Psychoactive drugs or psychotropic drugs typically end up in breastmilk more than other types of substances because they are usually more fat-soluble. Usually to get into brain tissue they have to be a little more fat-soluble than drugs that act in the periphery.” [10:15] “In the nursing period I think that there's more potential to use psychedelics safely and without really taking much risk as far as exposing the [child], whereas in pregnancy, yeah, you just don't really have that choice—the fetus is going to be exposed.” [24:42] Links: Dr. Malcolm's recent article: “Psychedelics, Pregnancy, and Breastfeeding” Spirit Pharmacist website Spirit Pharmacist on Facebook Spirit Pharmacist on Instagram Spirit Pharmacist on YouTube Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui
Today I'm talking with Andrea Nakayama, founder of the Functional Nutrition Alliance. For the last 20+ years, Andrea helped those with chronic and autoimmune illnesses identify the healing protocol that will help them finally feel better and become the expert that they've been looking for. Andrea was motivated to pursue this path because 25+ years ago, when she was pregnant, Andrea's husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor and given 6 months to live. She has an incredible personal story but she's also worked with people for decades now to help them do something that we don't tend to focus on enough: experience Post Traumatic Growth. For many people, there are few worse things than rejection or the threat of rejection. The fear of rejection can cause anxiety, depression, and the most relentless stress. It can stop us from going after what we want and what we deserve. It can keep us stuck for a season - or a lifetime. When you think about fear of rejection and what that might look like for you, I want you to consider what might drive your fear of rejection. What might the underlying causes be? Some common causes of fear of rejection are: Past life events Past rejection or abandonment Past trauma Poor self-worth, self-esteem, sense of self Susceptibility to anxiety, self-criticism If you can identify where your fear of rejection stems from, it's more likely you can talk your way through it and give it less power over you. For example, as a person who was abandoned by her father as a little girl and again as a 38-year-old woman & new mom, it is helpful for me to remind myself that my father was unable to show up for me for a myriad of reasons. Those reasons were his. They are not a reflection of my worth or my value. They are also not any indication of how others will treat me. In fact, every other human in my life has shown they are very capable of showing up and supporting me. When I talk myself through all this, I can see how I am very likely to be supported in my life no matter what I go after or if I screw up from time to time. In this example, you can see where my fear of rejection might stem from as well as how I walk myself through it. You can see that in accepting my fear, labeling my fear, affirming my worth, and challenging my beliefs/past narratives, I'm able to walk my way right through this fear to a healthier place where I can show up for new things, hard things, big things, scary things - knowing that I don't have to be perfect, get everything right, impress anyone or prove anything. In this episode, I talk through 7 steps you can take to overcome the fear of rejection in order to show up for your life, go after what you want, and get all that you deserve. In the book, she draws on years of ethnographic research about St. Mary of the Angels, a small, urban parish near Boston's Egleston Square, to understand how that religious community "constructed rituals of solidarity as a practical foundation for building radical solidarity in the face of racial and economic injustice." Here's a truth about tough times–they're naturally a LOT tougher when you try to get through them on your own. And yet, receiving isn't something we're taught to do. I mean, the phrase, it's better to give than to receive is excellent proof of that. We have to give up some stuff in order to be able to receive: namely, being too proud, being uncomfortable with accepting help, not wanting to be a bother, and just being trapped in our own head. Let's talk about two things that will help you be more receptive of the help that's going to make this tough time easier. In today's episode I talk about balancing skepticism and spirituality. Many of us take an agnostic or skeptical view around what is really happening with spiritual/paranormal/supernatural phenomena, and yet feel drawn to magical practices. How do we reconcile this? I share my personal point of view that we don't have to reconcile it at all unless we want to -- we can opt to view belief as a tool, and use ritual and magic to have a meaningful psychological experience with measurable benefits on our health and happiness. There is evidence that ritual interacts with the subconscious mind, and there is also evidence that the subconscious mind drives a LOT of our behavior. In my opinion, it's worth taking an opportunity to interact with our subconscious in ways that is meaningful to us -- regardless of whether anything supernatural is actually happening. What do you believe around this topic? Further down in the show notes, I share links to peer-reviewed scientific studies around the measurable health effects of meditation and prayer, the effects that the subconscious has on our decision making, and the efficacy of certain essential oils to treat a variety of symptoms. I also share a sane list of essential oil safety tips -- because irresponsible MLM marketers on social media often advocate for types of essential oil use that are neither safe nor evidence-based. (Especially ingestion. You absolutely never have to ingest an essential oil, ever. That's not how aromatherapy works.) This week, Kate watched M3gan and then was served content about AI making podcasters obsolete, so she tries to figure out if she should care about chatGPT and then competes with it to see who does a better job answering listener voicemails. A woman in STEM! This episode covers pressing listener questions, such as:-Popular girls who painted their nails in class, where are they now? Feat. an incredibly windy tangent about body spray/splash culture in locker rooms and 90s Herbal Essences commercials-How does she feel about farmfluencers Ballerina Farm and the controversy that they were super rich this whole time?-What happened to the recipe of sour brite crawlers? And how does that lead Kate to formally ranking off-brand store-bought chocolate milks and grocery chains, then go off on a tangent about how a lack of cultural identity makes people obsess over sports?-What does Kate think is the current ‘monoculture,' and how does the speed of the news cycle and the volume of programming aid or prevent in having shared cultural reference points?Among other things. Mom Made Plans - Routines & Easy Life Hacks To Get Organized & Be More Productive
How are your transitions in your day going? Switching from getting the kids ready to starting your Bible study? How does that chaotic mindset transition to reading the word or starting your work day.... How about going from a work mindset to your kids coming home and interrupting because you were still working? Do you have the needed patience and happiness in greeting your children... Transitions in our day can be challenging but it makes it easier to improve when you think of it from an emotional or mindset state. Instead of struggling with trying to get the perfect routine, you may just need to put more intention in the transition times. Figuring out how to shift from mom mode to work mode for example can relieve a lot of your stress. There's a lot of great planning here for you to figure out what needs to be a habit, what is just a routine and what is a ritual. Our awesome guest today is going to give us all the details: Danielle McGeough is a professor, mom, business owner, podcaster, community volunteer, and organization junkie. She has 18 years of experience teaching, loves to help others learn to love learning, and has a knack for guiding people as they gain understanding about themselves. Her goal planners are currently available on plangoalplan.etsy.com and are designed to help guide women as they create simple, sustainable, and impactful practices that support a life full of joy, ease, and confidence. Want to see a mother get mad? Tell her she's "nagging" you after she's been obligated to repeat an entirely reasonable request several times over. And just why is "nagging" a word that's almost exclusively applied to women? We need the other members of our households to show up and do their share. As the default parents, we own the lists. So do we stop caring whether others like how we ask and remind? Do we enforce a back-to-one where we're not forced to ask repeatedly in the first place? In this episode Amy and Margaret discuss: The sexism and etymology of the word "nag" What Amy says are the three types of "nagging," and why we should separate them out What to say when our repeated asking is framed as annoying to other people (guess whom it's also annoying, too?) Kayaking, friendship bracelet making, and oh yeah, threats of eternal damnation! What better way for a kid to spend the summer than at church camp? These pricy summer experiences for God-fearing kiddos might look all wholesome from the outside (a little *too* wholesome, in fact), but there have been enough allegedlys over the years to make Amanda and Isa think church camps might be serving up their 'smores with a side of cultiness. But are Christian summer camps a Live Your Life, a Watch Your Back, or a Get the Fuck Out-level cult? Actor, writer, and former church camper Joel Kim Booster joins this week's episode to help us figure it out! As technology connects us more and more, we tend to find ourselves more and more disconnected as humans. The numbers back this up. We're working alone in remote locations. We're seeing one another attacked on the internet over political beliefs. We're spending less time with the people we love than we did years ago. Fifteen percent of males in America say they have no friends, and women who don't know each other are meeting and walking on the streets of New York during weekends for some sense of attachment. Cal talks with the author of The Power of Ritual, Casper ter Kuile, to see if rituals are the key to restoring our connections.
Bringing purpose and ritual to the start of each day is a powerful elixir for the rest of the day. Today, I introduce the practice of "Quiet Time," a daily ritual in my life since I was a teenager. Through the decades, it's become increasingly valuable and how I access my wise inner teacher. I've worked closely with today's guest, Linda Neff, and introduced her to quiet time and tuning into the innate wisdom within. In our conversation, we discuss how our quiet time rituals have evolved over the years and why it's something that we continue to show up for daily. We're all inundated with outside influences and noise, but when I have my morning quiet time, I find that I can move through life more intuitively and connected. In this episode, Linda and I look back on periods of our lives where quiet time really shifted what we were feeling and provided us the space to proceed in a more aligned way. Linda and I share some of the props and elements of our routines that have been supportive throughout the years, such as journaling, reading, or sometimes simply sitting in silence. Linda also opens up about what's been coming up for her in quiet time during this season of her life. Listen in to learn about what quiet time is and why it's where I start with my clients. If you enjoy these conversations, please subscribe and spread the love by leaving a review and sharing it with your friends.Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn, or on your favorite podcast platform. Every once in a blue moon, we'll have a guest who's such an expert they're practically bubbling over with an abundance of information. Occasionally, said guest(s) come back on the show for a Part 2. But today is even more special. It's the first time in Lipstick on the Rim's history that we are doing a Part 3.
