What does it really mean to live a coherent life?In this episode of What Is a Good Life, Mark McCartney is joined by João Sevilhano for a deep, reflective conversation on coherence, something that goes beyond rigid moral ideals and is more a lived, imperfect practice. João is a psychologist and learning experience designer. Co-CEO of Way Beyond, where he works on human development and organisational transformation. His background is in clinical psychology and psychoanalysis. He collaborates with Porto Business School and NOVA Doctoral School, and he tends to think meaningful conversation is underrated as a tool for change.Together, they explore:What coherence feels like in everyday lifeThe tension between values, actions, and changing our mindsWhy coherence is different from authenticity or consistencyParenting, work, and small decisions as tests of alignment“Slow activism” and the impact of how we show up with othersRather than offering quick answers or formulas, this conversation sits with uncertainty, contradiction, and the discipline of paying attention - particularly when no one is watching. This episode is for anyone feeling the pull between who they are, how they live, and what the world is asking of them right now.For more of João's work:Newsletter: https://useful-uselessness.com/Way Beyond Website: https://www.waybeyond.pt/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joaosevilhano/ For more from Mark McCartney:Newsletter: https://www.whatisagood.life/Website: https://www.mmcleadership.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-mccartney-14b0161b4/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@whatisagoodlifeInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/markcmccartney00:00 Questions as Companions07:00 Spirituality in Everyday Life13:00 Coherence as Purpose16:30 Flexibility and Awareness22:30 Discipline and Practice30:00 Helping Without Imposing36:00 Slow Activism and Stubbornness42:00 Living With Contradiction49:00 Reflection on Sacrifice54:00 Not Knowing as a Practice
In this podcast, host Greg Voisen sits down with seasoned executive coach and author Kris Girrell to peel back the layers of a phenomenon sweeping through modern society: the rise of the "spiritual but not religious." If you have ever felt like you've outgrown the rigid pews of traditional doctrine or felt a "dark night of the soul" burning away your old certainties, this conversation is your roadmap. Kris discusses his provocative book, Spiritually Homeless, exploring why so many people are jettisoning inherited beliefs to find a more authentic, direct connection with the divine. Are you truly letting go, or just checking out? How do you distinguish between the ego's chatter and the soul's whisper? Greg and Kris dive deep into the "unselfing" process, the necessity of embracing mystery over certainty, and how to find a new kind of community when you no longer fit in the old one. This episode isn't just about leaving a building; it's about arriving at your true self. What You Will Learn By tuning into this episode, listeners will gain insights into: - The Developmental Shift: Why maturing as an adult often forces us out of "black and white" religious thinking into a more complex, nuanced spirituality. - The "Unselfing" Process: How to dismantle the power of the ego to allow the "Big Self" (the soul) to emerge. - Navigating the Dark Night: Understanding that spiritual pain is often a "purification fire" designed to burn away old, inherited beliefs. - Integration of Awe: How to process profound "spot-weld moments" of oneness and integrate them into a non-religious daily life. - The Power of Unknowing: Why letting go of the need for answers—and even the questions themselves—is a vital spiritual tool. Omar Kelly joins to break down the Dolphins-Steelers matchup in freezing Pittsburgh, stressing that the cold will play a big role in the game. He pushes back on the narrative that Tua struggles in cold weather, framing it as a team issue rather than solely on the quarterback. Omar says Miami must run the ball effectively and stop the run, predicting a low-scoring, ugly affair. He also notes the game's significance for Mike McDaniel's job security and emphasizes that Tua needs to show his best in the final games of the season.

This week, thousands of pages of documents were released from the estate of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Some suggest Donald Trump knew more about Epstein's crimes than the President has let on –– though the White House has called it a smear job. These 23-thousand pages also tell a story that goes much further than the White House, giving insight into just how enmeshed Epstein was with global power-players and events.Murtaza Hussain, a national security and foreign affairs reporter for Drop Site News, joins the show to discuss all of this and to share what his reporting has uncovered about the link between Epstein, Israeli intelligence officials and more.

Mind Love • Modern Mindfulness to Think, Feel, and Live Well
In this episode, you'll discover:Why your body rebels when you're living someone else's scriptThe third option between toxic masculinity and invisible masculinityHow real masculine power actually improves intimate relationshipsWhat if the price of being the "good guy" is losing yourself completely?I'm so tired of hearing women complain about where all the good men are. You know what I think? They're out there. They're just so busy trying not to be toxic that they've made themselves invisible. We've swung from one extreme to another. Now instead of dealing with assholes, we're dating ghosts. You've got two terrible options in the dating world. Door number one: the obvious red flags who think emotions are for weaklings and leadership means being the loudest jackass in the room. Door number two: guys who are so terrified of taking up space that there's nothing actually there. Sure, they're nice. Sure, they're safe. But they're also the type to suggest going Dutch on the first date because making any kind of move feels too risky.Men are killing themselves at three times the rate of women, but they won't ask for help. And honestly? I get it. The message they're getting is confusing as hell. Be vulnerable but not weak. Be strong but not aggressive. Lead but don't be controlling. No wonder they're paralyzed. The thing is, we're all paying for this mess. When the men in our lives are walking around dead inside, our relationships suffer. Our kids learn that strength means shutting down. Everyone loses when half the population is too scared to show up authentically.Carl Jung wrote about the wounded healer. The person whose deepest pain becomes their greatest gift. A lot of men have learned to be incredibly sensitive to everyone else's feelings because they've completely numbed their own. They'll bend over backwards to make you happy while slowly suffocating inside.Today our guest is Isaac Wathen, a men's coach who helps guys move from people-pleasing to actual leadership. After his own health crisis forced him to face how disconnected he'd become, Isaac figured out how to reclaim masculine power without becoming a total dick about it.Links from the episode:Show Notes: mindlove.com/422Join the Mind Love CollectiveSign up for The Morning Mind Love for short daily notes to wake up inspiredSupport Mind Love SponsorsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Guitarist John McLaughlin's career has been long and winding. From his early solo records and work with Miles Davis, he possessed a unique approach to the guitar that encompassed jazz and rock vocabulary, played with a biting tone and stellar, virtuosic technique. He's never stopped developing, and we're covering our favorite highlights of McLaughlin's career: his acoustic (and later electric) take on Indian music with Shakti, his more traditional jazz projects, and much more. There are lots of listening highlights in this episode and we've covered as much as we can: Mahavishnu Orchestra's first two records are undisputable; Tony Williams Lifetime's Emergency may be the birth of fusion guitar; McLaughlin's mid-career studies in Indian music are inspiring; his take on Coltrane in an organ-jazz setting is monumental. But we could still cover a whole other episode's worth.Sponsored by PRS Guitars: http://prsguitars.comFollow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. My son and I love a few certain characters from the books we've read aloud over the years. Gum-Baby, from Tristan Strong, Boots, from Gregor the Overlander, Maniac Magee. For my daughter, it's Junie B. Jones and Ramona from their named series collections. For me, it was always Anne (of Green Gables) I returned to growing up, and Jo from Little Women. Oh, and of course, Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes. Incredible characters are everywhere we turn in literature, and they make such an impact on us. We see through their eyes, experience their transformations, build empathy through their experiences. Maybe that's why when I think about characterization, I tend to think about activities that showcase characters visually. That come at them from many angles. That require students to consider their evolution, their growth, their nature vs. their nurture. Because sure, by all means, let's talk about what it means to be flat or round, static or dynamic. But then let's go much further. Today on the podcast, I'm sharing six creative characterization projects I've come up with over the years, in hopes that one (or two, or three) will fill a hole for you. I love them all for different reasons, and I hope you will too. Go Further: Explore alllll the Episodes of The Spark Creativity Teacher Podcast. "There's always a million reasons not to do something." --- Jan Levenson, The OfficeThat statement couldn't ring more true with podcasting. Because on the surface, it looks like doing a podcast is this overwhelming task with so many moving pieces, pushing it downstream and "worrying about it next week" or "next quarter" seems like the better way to fly.But guess what? But with podcasting, you're doing much more than just STARTING and DOING a podcast. You're opening up a new channel of communication and content creation that could literally change the face and direction of your brand. In this installment of Podcast Theory, I'm sharing my reasons why RIGHT NOW is the best time to start your brand podcast (or, at the very least, the planning phases).Join me as I talk about:- Why putting off the start of your podcast production does more harm than good- How to evaluate time when it comes to the structure of your podcast- How to overcome the belief that podcast production is this overwhelming feat you can never accomplish- Why business leaders need to look at podcasting as an engine that churns out much-needed content versus something that requires thousands of downloads to be considered a success____________________________________On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I go live on the Bombtrack Media YouTube channel and Facebook Page, as well as my personal LinkedIn page, for new episodes of Podcast Theory featuring tips, strategies, and commentary focused on the world of podcasting.Connect to your platform of your choice at bombtrackmedia.com/liveDiscover how to make podcasting a key part of your marketing strategy, effectively use it to grow your brand, and get your podcast WAY BEYOND three episodes in my exclusive video series. Have you ever found yourself in a position where you question whether you should publish an episode of your podcast because it doesn't meet your standards? If you haven't yet, chances are it's something you'll encounter at some point in your podcasting plight. In Part 5 of my "5 Things Your Podcast Doesn't Need" series, I'm diving deep into one of the most critical items you need to consider with your production: compromising your standards at the expense of your audience. In podcasting, the unofficial golden rule is you always consider the listener's experience above all else. If you feature a guest who goes into business for themselves and does nothing but sell - to the point your listener may wonder if this content is for them - you may want to consider other options instead of exposing your listeners to something that will sour them on your show. You want to ensure you bring value to your listeners at all times. And if that means 86'ing an episode because it doesn't meet your standards, so be it.____________________________________On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I go live on the Bombtrack Media YouTube channel and Facebook Page, as well as my personal LinkedIn page, for new episodes of Podcast Theory featuring tips, strategies, and commentary focused on the world of podcasting.Connect to your platform of your choice at bombtrackmedia.com/liveDiscover how to make podcasting a key part of your marketing strategy, effectively use it to grow your brand, and get your podcast WAY BEYOND three episodes in my exclusive video series. The "5 Things Your Podcast Doesn't Need" series rolls on and today, in Part 4, we are taking a slight detour away from the attention spans of your listeners and focusing on an item that many podcasts feature, but don't necessarily need.As podcasting has evolved, many things have changed and become available to this medium. One of them is the ease in which we can access podcast content on our devices.Back in the day, the term "PODcast" was literal because you uploaded "internet radio episodes" to your iPod and consumed at will. This was a newfangled thing (as was downloading music onto a portable rectangle), and many shows featured the word "podcast" so people knew what they were accessing.Today, the question needs to be asked: Does the word "podcast" still need to be used?I'm exploring this and more in today's episode. Want to know the most annoying word on a podcast? Then this episode of Podcast Theory is for you! This is Part 3 of 5 in my series "5 Things Your Podcast Doesn't Need" and today, I'm covering another item that keep your listener from getting to the heart of your content once they click play.If you listened to Parts 1 & 2 in this series, you discovered that attention spans are at an all-time low for adults (clocking in at a whopping 8.25 seconds). With that number in mind, getting your listener to the main reason they clicked play on your podcast episodes is at an all-time high.In this episode, you'll discover something that can easily be removed from your production and, if need be, used in a better way to keep your listeners invested until they reach the end of your episode.____________________________________On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I go live on the Bombtrack Media YouTube channel and Facebook Page, as well as my personal LinkedIn page, for new episodes of Podcast Theory featuring tips, strategies, and commentary focused on the world of podcasting.Connect to your platform of your choice at bombtrackmedia.com/liveDiscover how to make podcasting a key part of your marketing strategy, effectively use it to grow your brand, and get your podcast WAY BEYOND three episodes in my exclusive video series. In Part 1 of this 5-part series, I shared some scary numbers regarding the attention span of adults in 2024 and why this is important for podcast creators to consider when laying out their content.I'm building upon those points in Part 2 today as I share another item your podcast episodes don't need and, ultimately, diminishes your listener's experience if you do it too much. This particular item can:- Put more work on your plate- Take more time than it's worth- Make things awkward for your guest- Accomplish more if the guest does it themselves____________________________________On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I go live on the Bombtrack Media YouTube channel and Facebook Page, as well as my personal LinkedIn page, for new episodes of Podcast Theory featuring tips, strategies, and commentary focused on the world of podcasting.Connect to your platform of your choice at bombtrackmedia.com/liveDiscover how to make podcasting a key part of your marketing strategy, effectively use it to grow your brand, and get your podcast WAY BEYOND three episodes in my exclusive video series. Since first becoming a thing over 20 years ago, podcasts have evolved in numerous ways. From methods of production to repurposing to actual content that makes up the shows you love, creators have embarked on a wild journey to connect you to their brands through this incredible, constantly-growing medium. As you put your content together, there are some items you may hear on other podcasts that you want to include...and, just as much, some items you don't.Over the course of the next five episodes of Podcast Theory, I'm going to share some items you've undoubtedly heard on other podcasts (or potentially included in your own production) and let you know why your podcast will better serve your listeners if you DON'T include these things going forward. In this episode, you'll discover how you can get your listeners to the heart of your content in a fast, efficient way while saving yourself time as well.Attention spans (or the lack thereof) are incredibly important to keep in mind as you put your content together for your brand. You want to ensure your target customers hear the right things. But if they lose focus because you aren't getting to the right things fast enough, all is lost.____________________________________On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I go live on the Bombtrack Media YouTube channel and Facebook Page, as well as my personal LinkedIn page, for new episodes of Podcast Theory featuring tips, strategies, and commentary focused on the world of podcasting.Connect to your platform of your choice at bombtrackmedia.com/liveDiscover how to make podcasting a key part of your marketing strategy, effectively use it to grow your brand, and get your podcast WAY BEYOND three episodes in my exclusive video series. I thought, “You know, I need another adventure,” and I was worried it was going to ruin my career. But it turned out to actually be very good for my acting career. Because after you come off a series like Baywatch, everyone thinks you're just incompetent and dumb and I don't know, they just don't give you any credit for anything. And then you go do an Ironman. -Alexandra PaulIn today's encore episode, we dive deep into the life and mission of Alexandra Paul, beyond the accolades, discovering who actress Alexandra Paul is at her core and what drives her.Alexandra shares her incredible story of deciding in 6th grade to remain child-free by choice and how that decision has shaped her activism, including her TEDx talk on overpopulation—a topic she passionately believes needs more attention. We discuss her transformation to vegetarianism at 14, inspired by Diet for a Small Planet, and how a year between high school and college sparked her love for acting, leading to a career where she stood firm in her ethics, refusing to wear fur or use makeup tested on animals. She also opens up about her battle with an eating disorder during her teens and early 20s, her fears around restricting dairy, and the profound moment at 47 when she went vegan and her heart “cracked open,” seeing the injustices of the world more clearly. We touch on her direct action activism, where Alexandra literally takes a stand—physically—for her beliefs, having been arrested over 25 times. She discusses the privileges that allow her to engage in civil disobedience, her training in it, and some of the experiences that have stood out, including moments of fear and claustrophobia. This conversation is rich with reflections on activism, personal growth, and the ongoing journey of recovery from bulimia. Alexandra's story is not just about overcoming challenges—it's a powerful reminder of how our choices, big and small, can shape a better world. If you're a podcaster, I'm sure you'll agree with me: the majority of podcast guest pitches (or presentations) SUCK. In surround sound. With the volume turned all the way up.Leaning into podcast guesting is a great way to grow your brand, spread the word about your podcast, showcase expertise, and position yourself for increased visibility. But if you don't land the guest spot because your guest pitch isn't on point, you'll never experience any of those (plus many more) benefits. In this episode of Podcast Theory, I'm covering where professionals looking for guest spots on podcasts are missing the mark and how you can improve YOUR pitch to secure more appearances that will elevate your brand.Having a better understanding of what you need to say and how you should approach podcast hosts you want to collaborate with will lead to much better results. Depending on what website you land on or podcast you listen to, you're more than likely going to encounter some very ugly statistics about podcast launch success rates. The one I've grabbed hold of recently states that 90% of new podcasts DON'T GET BEYOND THREE EPISODES!!! This...is simply unacceptable. And it's time for a reality check. If you want to utilize the podcast medium for your business, you need to be strategic and set yourself up for long-term success.I have a pretty good idea why that aforementioned statistic exists and I'm sharing my thoughts on how BRUTALLY EASY it is to blow that number out of the water on this episode of Podcast Theory. If seeing numbers like that has soured your thoughts on podcasting or put you in a holding pattern on getting your own show off the ground, you need to consume this episode and discover how you can end up on the right side of the statistics.Get ready...this is a message you DON'T want to miss.____________________________________On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I go live on the Bombtrack Media YouTube channel and Facebook Page, as well as my personal LinkedIn page, for new episodes of Podcast Theory featuring tips, strategies, and commentary focused on the world of podcasting.Connect to your platform of your choice at bombtrackmedia.com/liveAnd just in case you miss the sessions live, they'll be right here in your favorite podcast app filed under Season 4.Discover how to make podcasting a key part of your marketing strategy, effectively use it to grow your brand, and get your podcast WAY BEYOND three episodes in my exclusive video series. The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and partners are preparing to launch a campaign this month to vaccinate thousands of children in Gaza against polio after the disease was detected in sewage samples in two locations.Boys and girls caught in the war wonder when the fighting will end, said UNICEF communications officer Salim Owais, who spent eight days in the enclave.Mr. Owais visited several hospitals where he met children suffering from various diseases and war injuries amid the ongoing lack of doctors, medicines and equipment. Speaking from Deir Al-Balah, he told UN News's Abdelmonem Makki that “the picture is really grim in Gaza in general, but in a different way in hospitals.”

In this episode, materials scientist and engineering professor Deb Chachra shares about infrastructure. Her book ‘How Infrastructure Works: Inside the Systems that Shape Our World' is a multi-layered dive into infrastructure. In this episode, Deb and Kate explore ideas of how we move resources to bodies and waste away from bodies. It is a brief exploration of the rise of globalization and our telecommunications, physical infrastructure, and roads, but it is also an exploration of how access to energy is also access to agency. In it, the concept of ‘away' is explored - whether it's the away that we send our waste or the away from which we extract resources using human labor and the complexities of infrastructure's harms and benefits. It's also a re-imagining of what the future could look like, which Deb reminds us “is not inevitable” and how we can ask ourselves questions about our values and how we might shape the our care for people now and in the future. Infrastructure is a big and complex subject and Deb's book deftly explores it. This episode is a small peek into her work. Hey friends! Welcome to Girls' Night! At the moment we're in between seasons here on the show. But while we're waiting for our next official season to begin, we thought this would be a great time to pull some of our favorite episodes out of the Girls Night archive. This is the perfect time to catch up on episodes you might have missed, or listen again to old favorites. Our guest for today's episode is my new friend, Kristen Newton, who goes by KB. KB was a former DJ for the Indiana Pacers (so cool, right?), but she recently started a new venture to help millennial women find, cultivate, and keep amazing friendships. Now, you guys hear me say it at the beginning of every episode because I think it is 1000% true — life is so much better when we walk though it together as girlfriends! But maintaining healthy friendships isn't always easy. And that's why I wanted to have KB on the show. She's here to talk about how we can deepen friendships (and heal some of our unhealthy ones) by having honest, authentic heart conversations. She's going to give us some super practical tips and steps to help us find and form friendships that go way beyond the surface. True friendships, deep friendships. I just love that.
