What if the key to addiction recovery wasn't in following a program but in understanding the battle within your own mind? On this episode of Rolling Real with Ranard, we delve into the Wilder Method with Bill Wilder, the groundbreaking expert who redefines mental health and recovery by focusing on the primal forces driving human behavior: the id, ego, and superego. Bill Wilder brings a unique perspective to recovery, rejecting the outdated reliance on willpower or shame. Instead, he explores how the primal brain (the id) conflicts with our higher reasoning (the ego) and societal expectations (the superego)—and how this inner tug-of-war keeps people stuck in cycles of addiction. At the Wilder Wellness Center, his work uncovers the root causes of these struggles, helping individuals break free with clarity and purpose. This episode dives deep into: The Id, Ego, and Superego Explained: How understanding these parts of the psyche can unlock recovery The Wilder Method: Bridging primal desires with rational thinking to create a sustainable path to healing Why Traditional Therapy Fails: The limitations of surface-level solutions and why addressing the primal brain matters Empowering, Not Labeling: Reclaiming personal power by breaking free from outdated notions of addiction as a “lifelong disease” The Role of the Primal Brain: Understanding why we crave, why we fight, and how we can rewire those instincts for freedom Bill's work isn't about managing symptoms—it's about empowering people to reprogram their mental and emotional systems at the core. By understanding the interplay of the id, ego, and superego, he helps clients not just recover but thrive, free from the shame and blame perpetuated by traditional recovery models. This isn't therapy as usual. It's raw, real, and revolutionary. For anyone searching for a deeper understanding of addiction, mental health, and the forces shaping behavior, this episode offers a perspective you won't hear anywhere else. In our conversation Josef shares about the leap of faith that brought him to Esalen from Rio de Janeiro in search of healing, transformation, and a place to call home. Today, guests know him from the Gate; he is one of the first people they meet upon arriving at Esalen. He has a delightful smile, but what they may not know is that Josef is steeped in the philosophy of Gestalt, and that he is decidedly not conflict averse - rather, he believes that conflict is where the truth comes out. Yet that at the same time, Josef believes fun is mandatory. He is a lover, with a huge heart, and in this conversation he speaks lovingly and at length about the love he lost, his wife Montgomery. You'll be touched by this conversation with one of Esalen's memorable characters. "Thank you so much." Photo by Kate Kondratieva

What happens when we really utilize the power of our mind to break through blocks to success in our lives? Or maybe you are facing a pivot and do not want to go backward into old patterns? Our guest today is researcher and best-selling author Ravinder Taylor. She has helped literally thousands of people change their state of mind and therefore empower their lives. Her latest book is “Mind Training: The Science of Self-Empowerment.” Ravinder talks about solid research which analyzed the importance of your state of mind, including a technique which improved cognitive abilities, reduced stress, and also made progress toward dementia. When she studied it further, she knew she could go deeper. What she wanted to do was take away the mystic around “self-help,” and show how in a scientific manner that positive change could be proven. She studied various self-help techniques so that the reader could find methods that work for themselves. She was looking specifically at a 12-minute meditation, which had spiritual undertones. She talks about the Sikh tradition in which she was raised, although she turned away from organized religion. She further studied brainwave entrainment and how it works with meditation. She suggests bringing your own faith into your meditation, if that feels right for you. She talks about what beliefs mean and how certain ideas get into our mind. The subconscious beliefs are so powerful, but first she says we must understand where the beliefs originated. She talks about the divided mind that Freud explored which includes the Ego, the Id, and the Superego. She furthers talks about the idea of the 4 Selves and what they mean. Who do we believe we can be? It's not about perfection, it's about our personal successes. We can actualize them. Her training is about being the best you can be. She further looks at psycho-social development, starting as an infant. Each period of our life lets us learn different things. She outlines the stages and shares ways to correct behaviors toward empowerment through various exercises. We can look back at our own childhoods and see where patterns started. Ravinder discusses her research into the Law of Attraction – Ask, Believe, and Receive. She talks about insecurities, self-destructive behaviors, and the importance of choosing, rather than asking. This is Part 1 of the interview. Info: RavinderTaylor.com

“God talks to human beings through many vectors. But nowhere with such detail, and grace and joy, as through creation. When we destroy nature, we diminish our capacity to sense the divine.” With this April 2023 tweet, RFK Jr inaugurated his presidential campaign, which has now folded into a daily ritual of Trump bootlicking. Now, Bobby is telling Tucker Carlson and the world that climate change cannot be solved through commitment to the “carbon orthodoxy.” “It's not about quantifying stuff,” he says. “That's what the devil does. But the reason we're preserving these things is because we love our children.” What does this mean? The Subversive Therapist

The Psychiatry game is introduced on the individual or psychotherapy level as well as how Psychiatry is promoted for the maintenance of the status quo. The Psychiatry game reinforces social hierarchies as reality (e.g., "mentally ill" versus not). Far ahead of his time, Eric Berne, MD understood the concept of “mental health” as a game or pastime. In his words, it is "based on the thesis that if only the right procedure can be found, everything will be alright."  As the patient sits on the couch, inside their heads the question is, “What am I supposed to do here?” Patients, especially novices to psychotherapy, will inevitably comply with their therapist who uses the DSM to define them in order to elaborate their self-presentations and self-understanding. The patient will talk subjectively about what it is like to be them as a solid self. This can be played using Transactional Analysis ("My Critical Parent ego state...), psychoanalysis ("Gee my Id just has a hold of my Superego," or the clinical version, "Nice use of transference!"), cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT ("Those damn negative thought loops!"), etc.  The emphasis is on subjectivity, but this comes at the expense of affect and relational intimacy with the therapist. Colloquially, the patient talks about what is going on inside their head. In the US, as individuals continue to view themselves as brands (Me, Inc) and are enclosed by Big Tech's ability to commodify them and sell them things at the same time, Psychiatry becomes the engine for negating "the world." Identity as reality is instantiated in the culture. Me me me. Self-optimization to become supreme and "win." This is in contrast with the Zen notion of no-self or no-mind (i.e., emptiness). One of the many strengths of the book is how it takes concepts and ideas and shows how they can be adapted to various contexts. Among the topics and sub-topics touched upon in this episode are politics, society and its many forms, the continuing quest for the keys to happiness and mental clarity, the differences between British, American and Japanese culture, myths & reality, and the relationship between religion and mental health. As the podcast nears its half century, we venture into another multi-parter, this time on John Cleese and Robin Skynner's very readable, entertaining and insightful book ‘Life & How To Survive It', the sequel to their ‘Families & How To Survive Them'. As with ‘Families', this book is presented as an ongoing dialogue between the doctor/expert and the patient/layman.   As is the usual format, Antony picks some interesting parts from the book, reads them out and then expands on some of the points made. Part 1 starts with looking at good, bad and average mental health among individuals, families and companies. Along the way, there is discussion of generosity, work, humour, dependence, neurosis and defences and a few other things   Part 2 will be on its merry way soon   We hope you enjoy the show! I'm just SO excited to share this conversation with all of you. When Sheira Kahn and I get together to record a podcast, magic happens! It's truly special.  Back in the Spring of 2022, Sheira and I got together to talk about how to work with the inner critic in a powerful way. This is somethign we can all resonate with – the perennial question of, “how do we work with the chatty, sometimes intense inner critical voice inside?” In this conversation, we take things one layer deeper by entering into the realm of the ‘Id.' This is the primal, animal part of ourselves…but as you'll hear, we have not been fair to this part of the human psyche. We have discarded it, and cast it into the shadows. In doing so, we have robbed ourselves of a much-need connection to the vital, life-force energy.  In this episode, we'll dive into: Why it's important to get to know our “Id”, our animal, instinctual nature What we weren't taught in school about the “Id” How the “Id” interacts with the Superego and the Ego What the possibilities are for your life by interacting with the “Id” – magic can happen! Which parts of the psyche correspond to life force energy Why we're so afraid of our “Id” How the Wizard of Oz is a tale of integrating shadow And so much more! If you want to work with or find out more about Sheira Kahn, I could not recommend more that you check out her website: https://sheirakahn.com/ As mentioned in the podcast, Sheira Kahn's upcoming class on disordered eating + the healing available is called “Eat In Peace”

Nowadays, compassion is being weaponized; too much enabling and coddling and not enough brutal honesty. For Rebecca, people have to take accountability for their life and not be a be a victim especially for people going through pain, low-T traumas, and difficult experiences. Life is messy and sometimes we have to do the hard things, and that's where our brilliance, growth, and evolution comes from. It's all about finding the courage to take accountability for our choices, showing up, and doing the work. It's not about “Why is this happening to me?” but should be more all about “Why is this happening to me and what is it trying to teach me?”. Being accountable also means taking our power back and doing the work, whatever that may be.Auditing RelationshipsLife is all about growing, and sometimes we outgrow a lot of people in our life especially those who don't put in the same amount of work that we do. People change and sometimes others don't, and we don't always have to shrink down to match them. We have to rise up and shine with the example of being the light and the example for those around us. Whether they fall out of our lives or not, the universe decides for us. It's a scary and uncomfortable thought, but the law of attraction rings true in this scenario. We will all find our people and the universe will bring those new relationships that match the frequency we're in. It might be uncomfortable to the ego; an ego death of releasing people and situations, but if your consciousness is in the abundance consciousness versus the scarcity consciousness, these are two completely different wavelengths and it's OK to just give it to God, send these people love, and let it be. We have to allow ourselves to grow and expand in order to fly and soar.Links and ResourcesOfficial WebsiteInstagramPodcastWhat's Your Heaven?: 7 Lessons to Heal the Past and Live Fully NowMeta-DescriptionPsychic medium Rebecca Rosen shares how we can deal with our day-to-day lives as well as the “woo”: spirituality, divinity, and even psychedelics.Support the show

"Conscience represents ethics that are not socially constructed and not socially learned but built-in. In fact, the whole of psychoanalysis is grounded in such an ethic - we all as analysts value life over death, we value truth over lies, we value love over hate, kindness over cruelty. Like those little three-month-old infants that Bloom studied at Yale, these values are grounded in our biology. They are part of what Winnicott would call our true self and they are quite distinct from the very different moral notions that wind up in our superego. After all, our superego contains our racism, it contains our sexism, it contains our heterosexism and those values are very distinct from our core values: love over hate, life over death. We all know on a fundamental level what's right and what's wrong on that very basic level, and that is the voice of conscience; we don't need God for this; it is built in biologically.”   Episode Description: Don begins by describing the difference between the narcissistically based superego from the object-oriented conscience. He sees the former as culturally derived and the latter as biologically given. We discuss how in the clinical situation persecutory guilt, i.e., superego, may often be emphasized to defend against the vulnerabilities associated with loving and being loved. We consider the use and overuse of the concept of trauma in contrast to intrapsychic conflict, and he distinguishes between empathy and sympathy. He shares his view that the edges of our political parties are imbued with the self-certainty born from the paranoid position. Ultimately, he concludes, "I'm not afraid that analysis will disappear - people who have problems with their soul will seek out soul doctors."   Our Guest: Don Carveth, Ph.D., is an emeritus professor of sociology and social and political thought at York University in Toronto. He is a training and supervising analyst in the Canadian Institute of Psychoanalysis, a past Director of the Toronto Institute, and past editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Psychoanalysis. Conspirituality
Special Interview: Nostalgia for the Superego (w/Sam Binkley)

Matthew sits down with Sam Binkley, Professor of Sociology at Emerson College in Boston to discuss his 2007 book Getting Loose: Lifestyle Consumption in the 1970s. We cited this very helpful work as we dug into the sociology of conspirituality for our own upcoming book. Here's a thumbnail of Binkley's argument: The 1970s ushered in a period of “getting loose” in relation to the body, work expectations, family relations, and political allegiances. This happened as the great moral and political questions of the 1960s deflated without resolution, even as they enshrined looser social mores around sex and finding meaningful work. The cultural yearning for structural change found its home in the project of the self, facilitated by an accelerated consumerism that expanded the conflation of agency with consumption. Getting Loose characterizes this inward turn as a retreat from the terrors of revolutionary freedom.
