(The Aims of Education, 1929) ~Alfred North Whitehead "The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him [or her] to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently." ~Friedrich Nietzsche "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself." ~John Dewey "You cannot make children learn music or anything else without to some degree converting them into will-less adults. You fashion them into accepters of the status quo—a good thing for a society that needs obedient sitters at dreary desks, standers in shops, mechanical catchers of the 8:30 suburban train—a society, in short, that is carried on the shabby shoulders of the scared little man—the scared-to-death conformist." ~A.S. Neill "I hold that the aim of life is to find happiness, which means to find interest." ~A.S. Neill "Most children are curious, they want to know; but their eager inquiry is dulled by our pontifical assertions, our superior impatience and our casual brushing aside of their curiosity. We do not encourage their inquiry, for we are rather apprehensive of what may be asked of us; we do not foster their discontent, for we ourselves have ceased to question. Most parents and teachers are afraid of discontent because it is disturbing to all forms of security, and so they encourage the young to overcome it through safe jobs, inheritance, marriage and the consolation of religious dogmas. Elders, knowing only too well the many ways of blunting the mind and the heart, proceed to make the child as dull as they are by impressing upon them the authorities, traditions and beliefs which they themselves have accepted. Only by encouraging the child to question the book, whatever it be, to inquire into the validity of the existing social values, traditions, forms of government, religious beliefs and so on, can the educator and the parents hope to awaken and sustain his [or her] critical alertness and keen insight." ~Jiddu Krishnamurti

Enjoy listening to Georgi talking about his background, before talking about prenatal and neonatal development (concept of life, nutritional and other environmental considerations, etc.). Idea Labs by Georgi: http://bit.ly/idealabsdc Timeline of episode: 0:0 - 2:24: Intro 2:25 - 5:45: What does Georgi eat for breakfast? 5:46 - 30:48: Georgi’s background and theorizing of health, life, energy, environment,... 30:49 - 47:09: Georgi’s thoughts on a healthy pregnancy 48:42 - 59:10: Georgi talks about challenges of working within dogmatic medical “system” and speaks to the value of questioning what you’re told to do 59:26 - 2:02:23: Georgi summarizing collection of research regarding optimal prenatal / neonatal development 2:03:00 - 2:12:09: Polyunsaturated Fats and how they affect development of an organism, as well as practical considerations In a world that often can appear to be crumbling - with environmental degradations and assaults seeming to come from every which angle - how can we make life more whole, more clear, more deeply satisfying and full of adaptability, play, meaning? These are a few of the questions I wished to explore with Georgi, and it led us I think deep into the world of biological energy, our close surroundings, and what we can put in our mouths for fuel. Dr. Ray Peat and others have done a thorough job of separating usable information or recommendation from medical culture; I hope this too becomes an easy-to-listen-to resource for relevant ideas about thriving in the beginning of human life and beyond. What is my personal motivation to do episodes like this one with Georgi? I am motivated to question what environmental / nutrition factors most positively influence cell development and cellular energy, firstly out of selfishness in that my wife and I have a two and a half year old boy who we are learning from daily, a boy who we want to do anything in our power and imagination to offer to him what we can in terms of environments that are rich so that he as an organism can be happy and flourish (intellectually, physically, totally). Secondly, our boy (and other children) will it seems inherit an earth - and many other future generations of people will as well - we hope that is full of wonder and beauty and sense; an earth whose individuals we hope will have enough resources of energy to not just handle the demands of the environment but the energy to grow with the environment and thrive in it, creatively and with presence.
