Givers, Doers, & Thinkers—A Podcast on Philanthropy and Civil Society
This week on Givers, Doers, & Thinkers, Jeremy speaks with innovator and educator Jeff Sandefer about entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and education. Jeff Sandefer founded Sandefer Offshore and Sandefer Capital Partners, both of which performed exceedingly well, the former generating $500 million in profits over a five-year period, before going on to found the Acton School of Business and Acton Academy. Jeff has been a longtime board member of National Review , the Texas Public Policy Foundation, the Philanthropy Roundtable, and the Harvard Business School. He belongs to the Mont Pelerin Society and is one of the youngest people ever elected to the Texas Business Hall of Fame. What makes a great entrepreneur? Some say it is fearless risk-taking, but Jeff argues it is more a tolerance for ambiguity. Jeff offers insights on higher education reform, case-method teaching, and the importance of real-world experience. He also explains why he and his wife created Acton Academy and its unique learner-driven model of education, where children pursue their passions and personal genius. To close, Jeff shares his approach to philanthropy and the wisdom offered to him by Bernie Marcus. We'd love to hear your thoughts, ideas, questions, and recommendations for the podcast! This week on the Team Never Quit Podcast, Marcus and Melanie delve into the dynamic world of education and entrepreneurship with special guests, Jeff and Laura Sandefer of Acton Academy. Jeff, a seasoned entrepreneur and esteemed Socratic Guide, has a remarkable dual life, having founded multiple successful businesses and earned accolades as an outstanding teacher at the University of Texas. Laura, co-founder of Acton Academy and an author, takes us on her Hero's Journey in education, chronicled in her book "Courage to Grow." Acton Academy's learner-driven model has spread across the globe with over 130 locations, emphasizing real-world projects, apprenticeships, and Socratic discussions. The school's foundation lies in the Hero's Journey, a narrative pattern guiding children through adventures, victories, and transformations. Laura passionately discusses Acton Academy's commitment to inspiring children to find their callings, employing adaptive game-based programs and online tools like Khan Academy to teach core skills. Laura and Jeff share their passion for giving children hands-on entrepreneurial experience through Acton Academy's Children's Business Fairs. These fairs provide children with opportunities to be entrepreneurs, fostering confidence, imparting valuable lessons, and preparing them for success in a rapidly changing world. Join us on this insightful journey with Jeff and Laura Sandefer as they discuss Acton Academy's innovative approach to education, combining entrepreneurship, the Hero's Journey, and hands-on experiences to inspire and equip the next generation of independent thinkers and lifelong learners. Website – https://www.actonacademy.org/ Sponsors: - aeropress.com/TNQ - Uncommongoods.com/TNQ In this episode you will hear: • The best teacher in the best school in Austin TX just told us not to send our children to traditional school because they'd be chained to a desk and lectured to all day. (7:17) • I'm not homeschooling. That wasn't in my blood at all. (7:33) • One of the narratives of the experience is The Heroes Journey. (9:25) • An ordinary person hears a call, sets out on an adventure, wrestles monsters, has mentors and guides, seeking a treasure all the way. And they may or may not get the treasure, but they return home a changed person, ready to share their new ideas and character with the world around them. Then, they set out on a new adventure again. (9:38) • Every time they get knocked down – they may not win, but they'll get back up. (10:13) • What a hero's journey does is distinguish hero vs victim. Any child at an Acton Academy starts claiming the identity of the hero. That's not someone who wins all the time; its someone who gets back up after they fall down. (10:23) • The hero takes responsibility and starts problem-solving, whereas a victim outs the blame on somebody else. (10:59) • They learn ways to work through problems with gritty decision-making (11:28) • The 3 big monsters starting at age 6: We start wresting with Victim-hood, Resistance, and Distraction. (12:18) • Sometimes your big brother needs to pick you up and say “get back in the fight.” (16:11) • IQ is so overrated - because its perseverance, grit, and getting along with people. That's what really matters. (19:30) • People who are there because they want to be there, they choose to be there, and they're on a mission for their life (21:08) • No adult on campus is ever allowed to answer a question. (25:43) • Things get chaotic – Part of the model is letting things fall into chaos, and let order arise as the young people figure out how to solve the problem. (26:41) • What's the best thing about Acton Academy? They'll say freedom. (27:11) • We believe every single child is a genius, who deserves to find a calling and change the world. (42:15) • The cave you fear to enter is where your treasure lies. (44:37)
It is such an honor to have Jeff Sandefer on the podcast today to talk about his experience as the co-founder, along with his wife Laura, of the fast-growing microschool network, Acton Academy. Today, there are over 300 Acton Academies worldwide, serving thousands of learners. *** Sign up for Kerry's free, weekly email newsletter on education trends at fee.org/liberated.
When Jeff Sandefer and his wife, Laura, started Acton Academy in 2010 with a single school in Austin, Texas, they had no idea that their network of schools would grow to 325 campuses in 26 countries just 13 years later. In this episode, Sandefer, a former oil and gas executive who has taught entrepreneurship at the college level, explains why every child is a “genius” who must embark on their own “hero's journey” and why he believes Acton's model has gained so much traction among “parent entrepreneurs.” (Recorded October 23, 2023.)
Steph interviews Laura Sandefer, co-founder of Acton Academy, a revolutionary design for K-12 learning. Acton is dedicated to inspiring each child to see life as a Hero's Journey, where someone with curiosity and character can find a 'calling' and foster a true love of learning. Steph shares examples of how the transition out of public school to Acton Academy has significantly impacted her children's happiness and education. They discuss how children can embrace heroism versus victimhood, the importance of failure, why grades and homework aren't required for success, and skills kids actually need to thrive in the modern world. They offer tools for all parents to consider and practice in their house to help their kids build resilience. You'll walk away with a new perspective on early education that offers the child more agency, joy, and independence. Topics Discussed: Steph's experience with Acton Academy. The underlying belief about children and learning that Acton is built on. The difference between heroism and victimhood. Three things a mom can do at home to build the mindset of hero so her child avoids the pitfalls of victimhood. What children really need to be healthy and happy. What happens when you step back and let kids lead. Dr Jordan B Peterson and Jeff Sandefer discuss the k-12 education machine, its origins and failures, and how the Acton Academies are making leaps to correct the system. Jeff Sandefer is an entrepreneur and Socratic teacher. He started his first business at 16 and graduated from Harvard Business School. Jeff has started and runs many successful companies, his most recent being Sandefer Capital Partners, an oil and gas investment firm with several billion dollars in assets. He has also started multiple academic programs and schools, such as the Acton School of Business, whose students were named the “most competitive MBA's in the nation” by the Princeton Review. This has since extended into k-12 with the Acton Academy, a cutting-edge program that blends a one-room schoolhouse, the Socratic Method, and 21st-century technology to empower each student to change the world.
Acton Academy was one of the very first national microschool networks to get started back in 2010, before microschools, or small, mixed-age, personalized learning environments, became one of the fastest-growing and most popular educational trends of the 21st century. Founded in Austin, Texas by Laura and Jeff Sandefer, Acton Academy now has about 280 independently run but Acton-affiliated schools in more than 30 states and 25 countries. Its growth and impact is continuing and accelerating, as Acton gains notoriety among parents, learners, and entrepreneurial educators. One of the latest Acton microschools to open is Acton Academy Fort Lauderdale, that was launched recently by our guest today, Tobin Slaven, along with his wife Martina. Father Robert A. Sirico is president of the Acton Institute, which he co-founded in 1990, because of his concerns over the lack of training religious studies students receive in economic principles, leaving them ill-equipped to understand today's social problems. He is a member of the Mont Pèlerin Society, the American Academy of Religion, and is on the Board of Advisors of the Civic Institute in Prague. Father Sirico's pastoral ministry has included a chaplaincy to AIDS patients at the National Institutes of Health, and he is currently the Pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Father Sirico joins me today to share his experience of growing up in multicultural Brooklyn in the 1950s and tells us the story of his unusual encounter with a neighbor and what that taught him about the human person's dignity without regard to their race. He explains why he admires and embraces the concept of servant leadership and what he learned about that from the head of the Michelin tire empire, amongst others. Father Sirico also discusses why it's more productive for you to work in your sphere of genius and learn to outsource task and responsibilities to other experts "If you want to become virtuous, follow a virtuous man. Watch what he does, then you just keep doing that, and you will become virtuous.” - Father Sirico “We need to see Jesus in distress, in disguise, in the poor and the vulnerable, and hungry.” - Father Sirico “If you do not have flexibility in business, you will not survive, you will not seize market opportunities, you will not be able to be a good servant to other people, to your consumers, because you won't see the things. You will have already had the blinders on, and you're going down one path, and nobody can interrupt you.” - Father Sirico This week on The Wow Factor: How and why we both give and receive spiritually when we embrace the principles of generosity The effect of the Vietnam War on the process of conversion in his life and why the effects of what he learned in that period changed his trajectory Father Sirico's thoughts on the inherent flaws in Marxist philosophy why we don't have to redistribute our resources but can concentrate on growing them instead Themes and characteristics that Father Sirico has noticed in successful business leaders that he has met Father Sirico's role at the Acton Institute and how the non-profit helps religious organizations to benefit from free enterprise The true meaning of the parable of the rich man getting into the Kingdom of Heaven and why we need to look a little closer to find the real meaning of the story Connect with Father Sirico: Acton Academy Father Sirico on LinkedIn Acton Academy Father Sirico on LinkedIn Father Sirico on Twitter Field Guide for a Hero's Journey by Jeff Sandefer and Robert Sirico Call of the Entrepreneur by Robert Sirico Connect with The WOW Factor: I Like Giving: The Transforming Power of a Generous Life by Brad Formsma Words of Wisdom Website Brad Formsma on LinkedIn Brad Formsma on Instagram Brad Formsma on Facebook Brad Formsma on Twitter
I was introduced to my guest today, Travis through a mutual friend, Joy Anderson, who is also a previous guest on this podcast. She said to me... you've really got to meet this guy. He's doing incredible work with teens and entrepreneurship, so naturally I was curious to find out more. I did a little bit more digging and turns out he's a pretty super creative guy. He's a product designer and business developer. He designed a travel toothbrush that cleans itself, which sounds pretty cool, that blew up big on Kickstarter. But even more than that, he's really super passionate about investing in young people... the future generation. He founded a nonprofit that helps teens start their own businesses. He's been doing that for about four years now, and he's worked with over 100 young people, mentoring them as they walked through a process that he calls the Creator's Path. He's also working in an Acton Academy school, which is a cutting edge K to 12 school that Jeff Sandefer, who was in our third episode, launched. And so we get a chance to learn a bit more about that. Today we'll explore how his model of entrepreneurship is changing teen lives for the better, preparing them for an uncertain future, and how your teen can get involved if it's the right fit for them.

You fashion them into accepters of the status quo—a good thing for a society that needs obedient sitters at dreary desks, standers in shops, mechanical catchers of the 8:30 suburban train—a society, in short, that is carried on the shabby shoulders of the scared little man—the scared-to-death conformist." ~A.S. Neill "I hold that the aim of life is to find happiness, which means to find interest." ~A.S. Neill "Most children are curious, they want to know; but their eager inquiry is dulled by our pontifical assertions, our superior impatience and our casual brushing aside of their curiosity. We do not encourage their inquiry, for we are rather apprehensive of what may be asked of us; we do not foster their discontent, for we ourselves have ceased to question. Most parents and teachers are afraid of discontent because it is disturbing to all forms of security, and so they encourage the young to overcome it through safe jobs, inheritance, marriage and the consolation of religious dogmas. Elders, knowing only too well the many ways of blunting the mind and the heart, proceed to make the child as dull as they are by impressing upon them the authorities, traditions and beliefs which they themselves have accepted. Only by encouraging the child to question the book, whatever it be, to inquire into the validity of the existing social values, traditions, forms of government, religious beliefs and so on, can the educator and the parents hope to awaken and sustain his [or her] critical alertness and keen insight." ~Jiddu Krishnamurti

In this fascinating discussion, we interview Jeff Sandefer, Co-Founder of Acton Academy. What he and his wife Laura have done, along with the support of hundreds of families across the globe, is create a revolution that has reignited a love of learning. Not simply for the sake of "knowing", but for the joy of "becoming". Acton Academy is focused on "equipping children to share learning with each other, in a close-knit community with extremely high standards of excellence." The model for all academies is very unique but rooted in philosophies that have existed for centuries. Calling upon the Socratic Method (starting with a great, overarching question and letting the learners grapple with the potential answers), the Guides at Acton introduce students to experiments, case studies, and resources that bring about a journey of discovery, rather than bell schedules and lectures.Since its formation in 2010, Acton has grown to more than 270 campuses across the globe with more on the way. We invite you to listen in and learn more about this amazing journey of two entrepreneurs who saw a need and found a way to provide children with a transformative experience in their education. To purchase Laura Sandefer's book, The Courage To Grow, visit your favorite book retailer and you'll find it.To learn more about Acton Academy, please visit their website at ActonAcademy.org. Today's guests are people who are near and dear to Matt's heart. Jeff and Laura Sandefer, the founders and creators of Acton Academy, are the people who started it all. What started as something they wanted to build for their own children has grown into an alternative education program with locations across the world. After being awarded the highly competitive Walter Wattles Fellowship at Lloyd’s of London, Laura worked in the aviation insurance industry in New York City. Deciding to follow her calling into the world of education, Laura returned to Nashville and earned her Master of Education at Peabody College. This led her to her work at the Oklahoma Arts Institute, creating fine arts education programs for teachers and talented high school students. Laura married Jeff Sandefer and is the happy mother of Sam and Charlie and step-mother to Taite. It is the inspiration of these children that led Laura and Jeff to co-found Acton Academy. As an entrepreneur, Jeff founded his first company at age 16 and went on to found or co-found seven successful businesses. As a Socratic teacher at the University of Texas, Jeff’s students five times voted him the school’s Outstanding Teacher and Businessweek named him one of the top Entrepreneurship professors in America. Jeff went on to co-found the Acton School of Business, an MBA program perennially ranked by the Princeton Review among the best in the nation. In 2012 The Economist honored him as one of the top fifteen Business School professors in the world. Jeff is a graduate of the Harvard Business School, where he served for over twenty years on the school’s governing committees. He was a longtime director of the Philanthropy Roundtable and National Review magazine and one of the youngest members ever elected to the Texas Business Hall of Fame. Jeff Sandefer is an entrepreneur and a teacher. As an entrepreneur, he founded a number of successful companies -- his first at age 16; his largest with billions of dollars in assets. Business may be his day job, but Jeff’s passion is teaching. While he was at the University of Texas, his students five times voted him the school’s Outstanding Teacher and The Economist named Jeff one of the fifteen top Business School professors in the world. In 2009 Jeff and his wife Laura started Acton Academy, a cutting edge K12 school named after Lord Acton, a 19th-century scholar who championed freedom, whose most famous quote is “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Acton Academy’s learner-driven model is spreading like wildfire across the globe, with over 150 locations launched or soon to launch, and thousands of applications pending to open a leaner driven community. In an age where Google shares information, Uber shares cars, and Airbnb shares rooms, Acton Academy turns learning upside down by equipping children to share learning with each other, in a close-knit community with extremely high standards of excellence.
