Today, Ali talks to Ashtin, who opens up about her long road through infertility, including doing IVF treatment in both Greece and Australia. Ashtin talks about trying to get pregnant for two years, navigating four failed cycles, and then, how she ultimately conceived using the PherDal at-home insemination kit — a non-invasive, science-backed option that helped her finally become pregnant with a healthy baby. Ashtin opens up about all of it, from the countless injections to the travel to being both emotionally and financially drained. She also shares how, after listening to the Infertile AF podcast and hearing an ad for PherDal (and hearing founder Jenn on another episode), she decided to try it -- and crazily enough, it worked! For more on PherDal, go to pherdal.com IG: @pherdal_science EPISODE SPONSORS: THERALOGIXIG: @theralogixTheralogix offers evidence-based, physician-founded supplements designed to support reproductive health, from egg and sperm quality to prenatal wellness and beyond. The Barbell Mamas Podcast | Pregnancy, Postpartum, Pelvic Health
A wave of excitement hit social media over a perimenopause hormone therapy “study” that hadn't even cleared peer review. We pull back the curtain on how posters at medical conferences actually work, why methods and nuance matter, and how hype from massive accounts can eclipse the careful voices of the researchers themselves. It's a candid look at women's health misinformation, how it spreads, and why long-form conversations offer a better path to clarity. From there, we dive into real questions from active moms. What explains breathlessness and fatigue at just eight weeks when your body looks the same? How do you navigate the identity whiplash of being an athlete who suddenly feels slower, quieter, and less recovered? We share practical ways to stay consistent, lean on community, and reframe expectations without losing performance completely. You'll learn how to assess lower abdominal soreness after toes-to-bar, when a hip flexor or lower abdominal strain is the likely culprit, and when anxiety or ectopic history means it's time to see a clinician. We map out first-trimester strength work in clear terms: three focused full-body days, two to four sets per lift, rep ranges that respect energy, and simple progressions—add a rep, add a little load, or add a set as recovery allows. Instead of defaulting to scaling everything, we push for a progression mindset and modify only when your body asks. On pelvic girdle pain and sciatica, we compare slimmer pelvic belts like the Serola with fuller supports, explain who benefits most, and pair any device with targeted hip and trunk strengthening. We also spotlight a missing piece in the literature: how pre-pregnancy injury history shapes pain during pregnancy, and what that means for prevention. If you're an active mom, coach, or clinician who values evidence with empathy, this conversation gives you tools you can use today—plus the context to spot hype before it takes root. Subscribe, share with a friend who trains, and leave a quick review to help more women find trustworthy guidance.___________________________________________________________________________Don't miss out on any of the TEA coming out of the Barbell Mamas by subscribing to our newsletter You can also follow us on Instagram and YouTube for all the up-to-date information you need about pelvic health and female athletes. In this deeply moving episode, Maya sits down with Dawn, a surviving sibling who opens up about the unexpected loss of her brother Justin, just weeks before his wedding day. Dawn shares the full arc of their sibling bond, from pranks and family laughter, to the hidden pain Justin carried, to the shock of losing him to suicide in 2013. Through her storytelling, Dawn brings light to the complexities of grief, sibling guilt, the impact of hidden addiction and gambling, and the long road toward healing. This conversation is a tribute to Justin, a celebration of Dawn's strength, and a resource for anyone navigating the grief of suicide loss. She also shares how her daughter Justine, born later, became a symbol of healing and joy. In This Episode: [0:00] – Meet Dawn & Her Brother Justin Dawn introduces her family, sharing about her close-knit childhood with her two brothers, including the deep bond she had with Justin, her "twin in spirit." [2:00] – Living with Visual Impairment & Justin's Support She opens up about growing up with congenital nystagmus, and how Justin always treated her with love and equality—never seeing her as disabled. [5:00] – Prank Wars & Wedding Shenanigans From pranking their brother Jason to orchestrating a hilarious wedding garter joke, Dawn reflects on how laughter defined their sibling connection. [7:00] – Health Challenges & Justin's Shift Dawn explains how Justin's life took a turn after a medical issue ended his athletic dreams, which may have led to a spiral of hidden struggles. [10:00] – The Call That Changed Everything In May 2013, Dawn receives a devastating call: Justin was found in the woods by their father. He had died by suicide, just one month before his wedding. [13:00] – Processing the Shock Dawn recounts the overwhelming grief, the small details that haunted her (like how Justin's smile was missing in his casket), and how she stepped into her "eldest sibling" role to hold the family together. [17:00] – The Unraveling Begins After the funeral, the family begins discovering secrets Justin had kept hidden—dropping out of college, gambling debts, and signs of silent struggle. [23:00] – Navigating Family Shame & Speaking the Truth Dawn candidly discusses how her family wanted to hide the cause of death, but how speaking up and honoring the truth helped her begin to heal. [26:00] – Grief, Guilt & a Mud Run Gone Wrong On what would've been Justin's wedding day, Dawn attempted to mask her grief with a mud run—but broke her ankle, lost her job, and spiraled into depression. The symbolic "fall" marked a breaking point in her grief journey. [29:00] – Naming Her Daughter After Justin A year later, Dawn gave birth to her third child, Justine Brianna, named after her brother. From her left-handedness to her smile, Justine became a living tribute and source of healing for the family. [32:00] – Pregnant in Grief: The Duality of Joy & Loss Dawn shares what it was like to grieve while pregnant—balancing immense sorrow with the hope of new life, and the bittersweet beauty of motherhood after loss. [34:00] – Six Years Later: The Weight of Untold Grief In 2019, six years after Justin's death, Dawn broke her silence—not in therapy, but in a surprising place: a Weight Watchers meeting. Talking about her grief helped her shed both emotional and physical weight. [43:00] – The Power of Community in Grief Whether it's a podcast, support group, or a wellness meeting, Dawn emphasizes the importance of community when grieving a sibling. Talking changed everything. Listen to the full episode of "Dawn Loses Justin To Suicide" now on all major platforms. To celebrate the launch of the new Perinatal Pelvic Rehab course, I'm excited to share this exciting & empowering conversation with Dr Jessica Gingerich about working with women in pregnancy & postpartum from an evidence based perspectiveWe discussed the new guidelines, how you CAN lift more than 20 lbs, you CAN run, when do you really need to pull back...and more?We emphasised the need for healthcare providers to be updated on current research guidelines and the benefits of aerobic & resistance training (moving beyond yellow theraband!) during pregnancy, and the recent paper that she was a co-author on:Resistance training in pregnancy: systematic review and meta-analysis of pregnancy, delivery, fetal and pelvic floor outcomes and call to action (Prevett et al 2025)We also discussed the prevalence of pelvic health issues among young female athletes, highlighting the need for increased awareness and screening, and emphasized the importance of educating athletes about their bodies and the implications of energy deficiency in sports, particularly for menstrual health. We talked about the importance of appropriate pelvic floor muscle training, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that includes both strength and flexibility. We also explored the societal conditioning around discussing and training the pelvic floor, noting how cultural norms and sexual education influence perceptions, as well as the importance of applying common sense and individualized approaches when training pregnant individuals, advocating for appropriate dosing and modifications based on the person's condition rather than following a rigid program. We highlighted the need for coaches to be attuned to clients' symptoms and to adjust training intensity and progression accordingly, especially during pregnancy when hormonal and physical changes can impact performance and recovery. Make sure you're following Jess @jessicagingerichdpt on instagram too!Are you fired up about working with perinatal clients yet?! The NICU can range from having just a couple of extra staff in the delivery room to having 15 people if a baby needs help, making the birth experience much more intense and involved. Planning ahead with your partner about who will go with the baby in case of separation can help make a stressful situation a little easier. About 10% of babies need some help breathing at birth, but most recover quickly; only a small percentage require NICU care beyond the basic interventions. NICUs are graded by levels (I-IV), and knowing what level your hospital offers can help families prepare—higher-level NICUs can treat more complex issues but aren't always necessary for uncomplicated births. If your hospital isn't a level III or IV, babies needing higher-level care may need to be transferred, which could mean temporary separation from parents; hospitals always work to reunite families as quickly as possible. NICU nurses are passionate, skilled, and deeply care about the babies and their families, creating a loving and safe environment even during stressful times. Parents can support their recovery and milk production by getting rest and using NICU technologies (like webcams) to stay connected—it's okay to take breaks and trust the NICU staff. Emerging technologies like Labry's Life Bubble are making NICU stays safer and more comfortable, allowing parents to hold their babies even when special catheters are in place. Skin-to-skin contact in the NICU is highly beneficial for both babies and parents, helping with bonding, milk production, and even neurodevelopment; parents are encouraged to ask staff about timing and any concerns about wires or tubes. Laura interviews Natalie Queiroz, MBE about one of the most horrific attempted domestic homicides in the UK. On Friday 4 March 2016 Natalie, who was 8 months pregnant at the time, was walking to the bank when she was attacked from behind by a man wielding a 12-inch carving knife. He stabbed her 24 times in the heart, lung, liver and uterus and attempted to slit her wrists. Against all medical odds Natalie and her baby survived, but not without life-changing injuries and her life falling apart when she found out who her attacker was. Determined to know the truth about why he had attacked her, Natalie faced her attacker in prison. This is a tough listen but an important one. It could save your life knowing what Natalie discovered. In this episode of the PFC Podcast, Dennis and Max delve into the complexities of hemorrhagic shock, discussing its classifications, the importance of understanding compensated versus uncompensated shock, and the vital signs that indicate a patient's condition. They explore resuscitation strategies, emphasizing the need for careful assessment and decision-making in trauma care. Special considerations for different populations, including children, pregnant women, and the elderly, are also highlighted, providing valuable insights for medical professionals in emergency situations.TakeawaysUnderstanding the progression of hemorrhagic shock is crucial.Compensated shock allows the body to maintain organ perfusion despite blood loss.Classifications of shock help in assessing the severity of blood loss.Vital signs are key indicators in evaluating a patient's condition.Resuscitation decisions should be based on multiple data points, not just one.Children have different vital sign norms and require special attention.Pregnant women can compensate for blood loss better than non-pregnant individuals.Elderly patients may not tolerate shock as well due to comorbidities.Communication with EMS about blood loss at the scene is vital.Continuous reassessment of the patient is essential in trauma care.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Hemorrhagic Shock02:57 Understanding the Classes of Hemorrhagic Shock05:51 Compensated vs. Uncompensated Shock08:40 The Importance of Blood Loss Assessment11:57 Physiological Responses to Blood Loss14:47 Evaluating Shock: Key Indicators17:57 Tachycardia and Its Implications20:51 Blood Pressure and Compensation Mechanisms23:42 Understanding Pulse Pressure Dynamics36:01 Understanding the Four Gears of Compensation39:23 Assessing Orthostasis in Trauma Patients43:53 The Importance of Urine Output in Trauma46:42 Mental Status Changes in Trauma Patients49:38 Classifying Shock: From Compensated to Decompensated01:00:19 The Transition from Class Two to Class Three Shock01:10:19 Class Four Shock: The Final Stage of Decompensation01:12:14 Assessing Hemorrhage Control and Decision Making01:19:54 Understanding Classifications of Shock01:31:42 Special Considerations for Pediatric and Elderly PatientsFor more content, go to www.prolongedfieldcare.orgConsider supporting us: patreon.com/ProlongedFieldCareCollective or www.lobocoffeeco.com/product-page/prolonged-field-care
Quan Millz is a maestro of urban fiction. Since 2017, he has self-published over 70 books and (apparently) made more than $500,000 from titles such as Old THOT Next Door, Pastors Eat Pwussy Too, Pregnant by My Gay Stepdaddy, and, the subject of today's episode, This Hoe Got Roaches in Her Crib. It's a tale of characters who make remarkably poor decisions, and with a tone veering wildly between slapstick descriptions of triple OG cockroaches and depictions of rape and child abuse.Helping me out was Slater, aka Simpulacra! In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Dan Hesse talks with Cathy Lanier, whose amazing story continues to inspire. At age 14, Lanier got pregnant, ran away from home, dropped out of high school. But by age 39, this single mother became Washington D.C.'s Chief of Police, earned two master's degrees, and now serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Security Officer for the National Football League (NFL). In her role with the NFL, Lanier coordinates the efforts of the League offices—that is, all 32 clubs!—and federal, state and local law entities to ensure the security of the NFL's venues, fans, players, staff and infrastructure. Cathy served as Chief of Police in Washington, D.C. from 2007 to 2016, where she was not only the first female police chief but also the longest serving chief, serving under three mayors. Her innovative strategies were credited with reducing violent crime in Washington, D.C. by 21 percent from 2007 to 2015 while the city's population grew by 15 percent. On average, a woman’s risk of being killed in the U.S. increases by 20% when pregnant or after giving birth. Pregnant and postpartum women are more likely to be killed than to die from childbirth-related issues. Many killings are the result of domestic violence. A presentation titled Pregnant Possibilities was given by Mark Tensmeyer, Joseph Stanford, Amanda Hendrix-Komoto, John Kidd, & myself (Rick Bennett.) This was similar to a presentation at Sunstone & John Whitmer Historical Association in August, September, & October 2025. We tackled the question on how many children Joseph Smith should have had with his plural wives. (It is a lot less than you think!) Mark gave a history, Joseph outlined the science behind calculating pregnancy, Rick did the calculations on expected number of children & probability Joseph Smith had no children from his plural wives. John ran 1,000,000 simulations of the scenario to randomize women's cycles and coitus, and Amanda discussed birth control & abortion in the 19th century. It's a fascinating presentation that we hope to publish soon. Check out our presentation from August & October. (You may want to view on Youtube to see the slides used in the presentations.) https://youtu.be/gL0P5F5FZcc Don't miss our other conversations about Joseph Smith's polygamy: https://gospeltangents.com/lds_theology/polygamy/ Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Pregnant Possibilities The polygamous unions of Joseph Smith in Nauvoo present historians with a persistent and colorful mystery: the apparent lack of known children fathered by Smith with any of his wives other than Emma. Clearly, Joseph Smith was fertile, having fathered nine children with Emma. This question regarding the lack of progeny was the central focus of the 2025 Sunstone Symposium session, "Pregnant Possibilities: Sexuality and Early Mormon Polygamy," which involved a multidisciplinary approach combining historical research, statistical modeling, and reproductive science. The presentation drew on the expertise of historian Mark Tensmeyer, JD (focusing on historical claims and Joseph Smith's movements), Dr. Amanda Hendrix-Komoto (discussing abortion and birth control history), Dr. Joseph Stanford (an MD specializing in fertility and the mechanics of pregnancy), Rick Bennett (a biostatistician who hosted the session and developed the mathematical models), and Dr John Kidd (who ran 1,000,000 simulations.) Does Marriage Equal Sex? The puzzle of the missing children was vividly encapsulated by Joseph Smith III, who found it "incomprehensible" that his "father should have had such a crew of lusty young women as wives, and not one of them had a baby by him. Not one, not a single baby". The presentation emphasized that while there are no identified or verified children from these plural unions, historians cannot definitively state that there were no children. Factors such as high infant mortality, stillbirth, or children who grew up under different names could account for unknown progeny. Mark Tensmeyer examined the foundational question: Does the fact that Joseph Smith married these women mean that he was sexually active with them?. While there is direct testimony of consummation for some wives (such as Emily Partridge and Melissa Lott), for the majority, evidence is absent or scarce. Arguments supporting consummation included the 19th-century societal norm where a marriage was often not considered complete if unconsummated. Conversely, arguments suggesting limited or no consummation centered on: Smith's lack of cohabitation with many plural wives. Other motives for marriage, such as dynastic connections or integrating plural marriage into the community. The fact that Smith and his immediate circle were not actively trying to conceive children with plural wives, contrasting with Brigham Young's later efforts to "raise up seed to Joseph". The gradual rollout of polygamy, which was necessarily shrouded in secrecy and denial, particularly due to Emma Smith's disapproval and limited knowledge of the full extent of the practice. To address the historical ambiguity, the researchers focused on 33 "consensus wives"—those agreed upon by prominent histor...
