Today, Ali is talking to Marea Goodman, licensed midwife, author, and founder of PregnantTogether, a virtual community supporting queer folks and solo parents from preconception through parenting. Marea co-authored the book, Baby Making for Everybody–Fertility and Family Building for LGBTQ+ and Solo Parents, and today, they share their family building story, including having an early loss via IUI, and also having their son through IUI. They talk about their passion for empowering people with the information they deserve to grow their families, and about dismantling the isolation and stigma that still surrounds queer and solo parenthood. They also talk about inclusive midwifery, queer fertility, and how we can better support all kinds of families on their journey to parenthood. "We're trying to create a community for folks who don't fit into the mainstream family building world, to build connections, share resources and rely on each other. It's been a beautiful thing that has also really helped me personally on my queer parenting journey," Marea says. As we arrive at Episode 423, we're celebrating 9 years of the Mom & Mind Podcast! I never imagined this possibility, but I'm so honored to share these profound stories and feature these helpful experts. I'm thankful to the real rockstars, every single listener. We continue to address every aspect of perinatal mental health, raising awareness and spreading a message of hope. Each person's journey of vulnerability, difficulty, and healing is important, and we hope that the insights and resources we share can help others. I'm excited to bring you another episode with Dr. Shoshana Bennett, the very first expert guest to appear on the podcast way back in 2016. After two life-threatening bouts of postpartum illness, Dr. Shoshana Bennett helped pioneer the field of maternal mental health in the US. She founded Postpartum Assistance for Mothers in 1987, became president of California's Postpartum Health Alliance, and served as president of Postpartum Support International. Dr. Shosh is the author of Children of the Depressed, Postpartum Depression for Dummies, and Pregnant on Prozac. She co-authored Beyond the Blues: A Guide to Understanding and Treating Prenatal and Postpartum Depression. She created the first app for postpartum depression and is an executive producer of the documentary, Dark Side of the Full Moon. Dr. Shosh co-founded the Postpartum Action Institute, which is committed to promoting parental health. To date, she has helped over 20,000 new parents around the world through private consultations, teleclasses, conferences, webinars, and support groups. Show Highlights: Intimacy is SO much more than “just sex.” Examples of intimacy and connection Barriers to intimacy include assumptions, lack of communication, taking each other for granted, and not showing love in various ways. A lack of appreciation leads to a battle over who's working harder and resentment. Dr. Shosh's advice to couples to “get more of what you need.” The importance of being respectful instead of snappy, critical, and nasty (“YOU are responsible for what comes out of your mouth, whether you are sleep-deprived or not.”) Dates are important and should not be “back-burnered.” (Hear Dr. Shosh's rules for dating when there is a new baby at home!) Anticipation of the next date is important! Get creative with physical intimacy! The key to intimacy is to approach a partner without complaining; we have to re-educate ourselves. Be intentional in your relationship. “Humor is golden and can help in difficult times.” (Laughing together adds to intimacy!) This week on Something To Talk About, Laura Henshaw joins Sarrah Le Marquand for a powerful and deeply personal conversation, as she celebrates and talks about her just-announced pregnancy. It was, as Laura says, “a complete shock” that came after a year of questioning whether motherhood was even right for her. Today, Laura reflects on the fears she worked through as she grappled with whether becoming a parent would mean losing her sense of identity, the emotional moment she shared the news with her business partner Steph Claire Smith, and the unsolicited commentary she’s received about her body along the way. Plus, Laura speaks out on the rise of “manosphere” content online and why she felt compelled to challenge a podcaster who she believes was promoting outdated gender roles – a decision that would take her viral and spark a national conversation. Laura also discusses her new KicPod miniseries Am I Equal?, which explores the importance of informed conversations about finances, power, and partnership in modern relationships. Find the KicPod miniseries Am I Equal? wherever you get your podcasts. For more from Laura Henshaw, visit www.kicapp.com Watch the full episode with Laura here. In this episode we have another home birth story for you! This time we're talking with soon-to-be mom Jennifer Sanchez. Jennifer lives a vegan lifestyle and so we were super curious about how that has played into her pregnancy and home birth planning. Jennifer was a lot of fun to talk to and we're excited to have her on the Doing It At Home Podcast. Jennifer is currently 6 months pregnant and planning for her first child. Her passion is about “helping others to live healthier, more compassionate and eco-friendly lives through the power of making plant-powered choices.” This has also influenced her process of choosing home birth. After making the shift into self-improvement and personal development about 7 years ago, she's been more focused on being informed and doing research when it comes to life decisions. She watched the Business of Being Born (like a lot of our home birth moms...Ricki Lake if you're out there, we want to talk with you!), and thought, “this is what it's supposed to be like, this is motherhood.” She reached out online for home birth resources and came across the Well Rounded Momma, a source of support and information for her throughout the pregnancy. Jennifer is taking care of herself through meditation, taking time to bond with baby, prenatal yoga and releasing any fear-based thinking that's going to create unnecessary anxiety around birth. Wishing her and her partner Jose all the loving, peaceful vibes for welcoming their baby in the next few months. Stay tuned! Kaitlyn Braun spun an elaborate web of lies, convincing over 50 doulas she was pregnant after a traumatic assault. Her deception confused and shattered trust in the doula community, leaving many unsure if they could continue their work. Journalist Sarah Treleaven spent over eighteen months investigating Kaitlyn’s unusual story and the motives behind it. She brought these stories to life in her podcast, The Con: Kaitlyn’s Baby, where she details speaking to the doulas who were tricked, lied to and left disturbed by Kaitlyn's actions. The question remains: why did Kaitlyn do it — and is her deception finally over? Listen to The Con: Kaitlyn’s Baby here. Warning.
