Today, I'm speaking with education disrupter, Matt Beaudreau. In 2016, Matt launched Acton Academy Placer – an alternative to the traditional education model that's reshaping how kids learn. It's not a school, it's a workforce. After working his way from public school teacher to private school administrator, Matt got an up-close-and-personal view of the education system. He saw an opportunity to revamp education to prepare students to succeed at life — not just at standardized tests — and Acton Academy was born. Kids learn hands-on through trial and error, self-awareness, self-confidence, perseverance, and the things they're actually passionate about. More recently, Matt Co-Founded Apogee Strong – a specialized mentorship program designed specifically to shape young men into better providers and protectors. 3 of the biggest insights from Matt Beaudreau… Why the current education system fails to prepare many students for the real challenges of life — and how to reshape education to make key lessons stick. The most powerful thing parents can do to prepare their children for financial literacy and sensitive real-world topics like religion and politics. Ways to get your kids interested and engaged in learning about personal and family financial matters.JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWTo become a DBDL Insider and get VIP access to free resources and exclusive content, text "DBDL" to 785-800-3235. *Message and data rates may apply. When we were establishing Acton Academy Placer, we actually had our founding students choose our mascot. Groups of students created and gave a pitch for their idea and then everyone voted. Lions won. We refer to all of the young heroes at Acton as Lions to reaffirm in their minds that they are independent thinkers, learners, and doers that are courageously leading their own journeys. Someone who whole-heartedly embodies those qualities is our guest on today's podcast. Sean Whalen is a father, entrepreneur, public speaker, podcaster, business coach, and the founder of LIONS NOT SHEEP. Sean's viral social media posts have been engaged with over 600,000,000 times, and he speaks at business and marketing events with the likes of Gary Vaynerchuk, sharing his story of success, divorce, suicide, and how telling the truth both personally and in business not only saved his life but gave him the opportunity to build a globally recognized company. While we get into the Essential 11 questions, our conversation gets into the importance of focusing on what you can control- the present. Anything beyond this present moment, specifically the past, is not worth your time or energy. But using the opportunity that you have in the present to make for a better future for yourself is not only beneficial, it is your obligation. And the best part is that you get to define what a better future for yourself looks like- it doesn't have to be what society says it should be. We also get into how young people can take advantage of knowing what they want to do, and how to discover what that may even be if they don't know right now. It's all about experience and self-awareness. More places you can find Sean: Instagram - @seanwhalen | @lionsnotsheep Website - https://seanwhalen.com/ Book - How to Make Sh*t Happen

What's UP? On today's episode Laura Sextro, CEO of The Unity Project, talks to Matt Beaudreau, an incredible leader in the alternative education space. In addition to being the founder of Acton Academy Placer and creating institutions all over the world, Matt is an advocate for our youth and co-Founder at Apogee Strong Mentorship Program. We were excited to talk to Matt about all the work he is doing with Acton Academy and Home Tribe to help parents find alternative education options as public schools become conveyor belts of indoctrination. He talks about his playbook for “creative insubordination,” playing the “game of college” and the need for strong mentors in the lives of children, especially young men. Apogee Strong is a global, online mentorship program that prepares young men to grow into providers, protectors, and future leaders. Facing the problem of a shortage of skilled trade workers in the industry, Matt addresses the causes and highlights potential solutions. The opportunity for better storytelling surrounding the trades industry is there. Matt and Michael discuss the impact Mike Rowe has made here, but the message is still missing today's youth. Matt talks about Apogee Strong's foundations for providing youth with opportunities to sample a breadth of experiences. Then, having had concrete experiences, they're able to see what they truly like and can hone in on their value proposition from there. How many parents want their kids to change the world? How many parents believe their kids can change the world? Matt works for this answer: Every Kid. And it will be their choice to make it happen. On this episode, we are bringing it back to the roots of what is makes up a collective society. That is the individual. And what is clearly lacking around the world in order to focus on optimizing and empowering the individual who's actions are crucial to the outcome of a society is an educational culture that permits it. Education in all its forms is important for individuals to know their place and the parameters of their pursuits. To become resilient and self reliable to mitigate the expansion of a welfare state that eliminates man as a sovereign thinking creature. The need for private schools and academies to push the youth forward is crucial for a society based on economic mechanics. The youth is the future, and to ignore their socio economic development comes at the cost of the society. With us is Matt Beaudreau the founder of Acton Academy Placer and Acton Academy Sacramento. We have a lot of parents who tune into our podcast. This past year and as it already appears, this upcoming school year, hasn't been and won't be a walk in the park. Many of us have been along for the ride with our children with no choice but to watch them struggle through at-home learning. But what we come to find out from today's guest, is that a large part of that struggle wasn't just that we were taken from the routine we've been so well adjusted to. It's that we- us and our children- have grown reliant on a system that needs us to need it. Here with us today is Matt Beaudreau, founder of Acton Academy Placer, co-founder of Apogee Strong, generational keynote speaker, and a dedicated father. He's been working in the education system for over 14 years and after seeing things from the inside, he realized there needed to be a better option for his own children. He describes Acton Academy Placer as a workplace for kids where the students work on the things they're passionate about while upholding community standards of strong character. Matt Beaudreau is an entrepreneur, public speaker, consultant, educator, podcast host, and founder of Acton Academy Placer and Apogee Training in Northern California. Acton Academy is a charter school based on Socratic dialogue that emphasizes real world results and outcomes over test scores.  And Apogee Training is an online mentorship program to help boys become good at being men, led by some of the finest examples of masculinity today, like Ryan Michler and Jack Donovan. In 2020 the joke became “hope is a four-letter word.” But hearing Matt talk about the results that kids achieve in his programs, it's hard not to feel a twinge of that old familiar feeling. In our conversation we discussed: His background, and how a long journey through higher education and public school as both an administrator and educator led him to discover Acton and make it his mission The hidden past and likely future of education, so parents can be prepared for what's to come by knowing what was written decades ago Matt's origin story, family values, and relationship to his Christian faith, and how they all inspire and inform his life and work And finally, some truly mind-blowing stories about what students in his programs accomplish To that final point I need to emphasize: it's not easy to blow my mind, to rewire my paradigms about what's possible. In some ways as kids I think we all suffered under the tyranny of reduced expectations. We can't change that fact now. What happens when we crank up the expectations for our kids? What Matt has to say about that will blow your mind too. In this episode of the Millionaire Mindcast, we have Matt Beaudreau who shares insights on how to build future business leaders and win the world with the right core values, responsibilities, discipline, habits, and alternative education to continue to evolve and get you to the next level. Also, he gets you some tips on how to fight the cons of social media, how to get out of those emotional places and get to a place of logic, and find your purpose and calling in life!   Matt Beaudreau is an entrepreneur, International Keynote Speaker with The Center for Generational Kinetics, Founder of The Art of High Impact Homeschooling, and the Founder and CEO at Acton Academy Placer, who believes that learning to do, learning to be, and learning to learn are more important than memorization alone – learning to know.  Matt is super blessed with a DNA component of being a good leader and entrepreneur. He loves connecting with people and is very interested in education. He was a public and private teacher and administrator that served a window to his speaking career. Matt has a belief system that education can be done differently; therefore, find people with the same interest as him. Until he found a global network with all the entrepreneurs where they share their one of kind ideas, helping each other, and they are united to give values to the world.   In line with this, the world is changing so rapidly right now and Matt is concerned with kids knowing Algebra at the right time. Thus, disrupting the education system and building the Acton Academy Placer to equip young kids with self-confidence and self-awareness, creating autonomy and independence. They help find the calling of the youth and adapt to changes no matter what and provide value to people.  Life is a long-tail game and a quest, and Matt has tasted so many things. He insists on starting to try a million different things early enough to know what you’re good at so you’re not missing the opportunity. For parents, don’t stress out on the things that don’t actually matter. Let your kids learn to set goals. Don’t be worried about somebody else's opinion. Get rid of it to start seeing things logically versus emotionally.   Some Questions I Ask:  How do you describe what you do? (00:30)  What was it that led you to this transition of developing future leaders? (01:54)   What is your acting mission or acting revolution when it comes to education? (04:57)  What are some of the fears you have for the upcoming generations being that you’re working with them so closely? (08:33)   How do people acknowledge and make sure they don’t fall into generational gap and crisis or overcome it? (10:42)   What are some of the messages that you’re giving to your kids right now? (13:10)   What are some of the things that you really see the youth doing that other generation maybe need to pay a little bit more attention to? (21:19)  What do you see to an individual who wanted to find their purpose and mission, and who don’t know where to start with? (23:22)  Tyler’s question: “When is it the right to explore and get the context and data to kind of put them all together to figure out what’s your ‘one thing’ is?”  (27:24)   What is your message to parents or to executive leadership teams that are working with millennials that are going to be working with the youth? (33:05)   Whose college meant for and not? (35:46)  What do you think is really going to take to knock the big money off of these campuses and colleges to at least get them off their access? (40:32)   What’s your take on social media on how people combating it, its pros and cons? (43:35)  Why did you want to come out with that podcast? (50:10)   If you look back to your life, what do you say equal success that you’ve been accomplished on your path? (52:49)   In This Episode, You Will Learn:  Matt’s global network looks like. (17:35)  The cool thing with trying a million different things. The campuses have a lot of entrepreneurial parents, and traditional schooling never resonated well with many of them. Seeing how we educate vs “school” is always something that fires them up.

You fashion them into accepters of the status quo—a good thing for a society that needs obedient sitters at dreary desks, standers in shops, mechanical catchers of the 8:30 suburban train—a society, in short, that is carried on the shabby shoulders of the scared little man—the scared-to-death conformist." ~A.S. Neill "I hold that the aim of life is to find happiness, which means to find interest." ~A.S. Neill "Most children are curious, they want to know; but their eager inquiry is dulled by our pontifical assertions, our superior impatience and our casual brushing aside of their curiosity. We do not encourage their inquiry, for we are rather apprehensive of what may be asked of us; we do not foster their discontent, for we ourselves have ceased to question. Most parents and teachers are afraid of discontent because it is disturbing to all forms of security, and so they encourage the young to overcome it through safe jobs, inheritance, marriage and the consolation of religious dogmas. Elders, knowing only too well the many ways of blunting the mind and the heart, proceed to make the child as dull as they are by impressing upon them the authorities, traditions and beliefs which they themselves have accepted. Only by encouraging the child to question the book, whatever it be, to inquire into the validity of the existing social values, traditions, forms of government, religious beliefs and so on, can the educator and the parents hope to awaken and sustain his [or her] critical alertness and keen insight." ~Jiddu Krishnamurti

This podcast is with a former public school educator, Matt Beaudreau, the founder of Acton Academy Placer's multiple California locations. He talks about his journey towards moving through the traditional systems, that teaches us how "to play the game" well, to now the school he founded, which encouraging hundreds of young heroes to find their calling. He is a multiple-time TEDx speaker, as well as a keynote speaker and consultant to Fortune 500 companies around the world. Check out the Show Notes Page ABOUT Acton Academy Placer... Having worked in education for several years, our founder, Matt Beaudreau, witnessed firsthand the disparity in today's standardized education. When he and his wife Heather began their family, they had to have a real conversation about how they wanted to approach their children's learning. Standardized education simply didn't uphold the same priorities that they held as family. Then they discovered Acton Academy. Acton was anything and everything that they were hoping to find. Students learn how to set their own goals and achieve, harboring the freedom of thought and a genuine excitement for learning. They focus on learning about themselves and what will actually prepare them for the real world. Success is not determined by grades, rather, the effort and hard work they are putting towards their personal goals and the growth that is taking place. It was the perfect solution not only for them but also for a community that they knew needed it so badly. By fall of 2017, Acton Academy Placer was born. We've moved from location to location, starting with an out-of-the-ordinary 64 founding students and now finding our home in the heart of downtown Roseville with a student body of 130 young heroes. The amount of community involvement both inside and outside of Acton Placer has been truly humbling with entrepreneurs visiting our students to tell their stories, Acton parents offering their services to the school, and our very own heroes creating ideas for the growth of the school. So much has happened within the short amount of time that we have existed, and we can't wait to see what the next years hold.

Those who homeschooled before the outbreak started.Matt Beaudreau is our guest on today's podcast. He runs Acton Academy Placer. The academy is a resource for homeschool families where kids meet to collaborate on projects and activities. His TED Talk on why traditional American education needs a radical change has tens of thousands of views and launched a successful side career in professional speaking. He's spoken before Fortune 500 companies on why America needs to educate kids differently to raise individuals better prepared to handle the modern workforce.Well, here we are. Stuck at home, and a lot of us are turning to homeschooling experts like Matt to lead the way.On this Dying to Ask:Why Matt says the first things parents need to do is not panicWhy your kid should lead the way in education while they're homeWhere to find free online resources to keep academics moving forwardThe silver lining in this unscheduled timeout in American lifeMatt's suggested online resources:Courage To Grow: Free on Amazon for the time being, but about the best book you'll find for a time like this.
