    Ivy Insights

The General Intellect Unit podcast is a refreshing and encouraging listen for individuals who are disheartened by the current state of technology and its impact on society. As someone with a degree in Computer Science, I have often felt disillusioned by the way technology is used and discussed. However, this podcast provides a much-needed antidote to the prevalent tech bro libertarian ideology that dominates Silicon Valley. It explores various issues within the tech industry, delves into Marxist analysis, and offers critical commentary on media and writings related to our changing world and future.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is its ability to provide an alternative perspective on technological advancements. It offers thoughtful analysis from a democratic standpoint that takes into consideration societal health and freedom. The hosts do not shy away from discussing the failings of past conceptions of technology's potential, highlighting the need for a cautious assessment of capitalism, growth, and excess. They approach topics with depth and intellectual rigor, drawing connections between different fields such as STEM, science fiction, socialism, literature, film, and political history. This multidisciplinary approach enriches understanding and fosters critical thinking.

However, one potential drawback of this podcast is that it may not be accessible to those with limited knowledge or interest in Marxism or leftist ideologies. While it provides valuable insights on these topics for those who are already familiar with them or open-minded about exploring new ideas, it may be challenging for individuals seeking a more introductory or balanced perspective on technology-related issues. Additionally, some episodes may delve into highly specialized academic material that could be difficult for general listeners to fully grasp.

In conclusion, The General Intellect Unit is an exceptional podcast that has influenced my thinking immensely. Its Marxist analysis offers a refreshing alternative to mainstream tech discourse while simultaneously providing insights into important works in STEM and science fiction. Despite potential accessibility challenges for certain listeners, this engaging and thought-provoking podcast serves as an essential forum for discussing difficult issues and shaping a more egalitarian and effective future. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in exploring the intersections of technology, capitalism, and society.

In which we are joined by Ezri of Swampside Chats, to continue our discussion of "Computer Power and Human Reason: From Judgement to Calculation" by Joseph Weizenbaum. In this episode we cover the third an fourth chapters of the book. Computer Power and Human Reason: From Judgment to Calculation (1976) by Joseph Weizenbaum displays the author's ambivalence towards computer technology and lays out the case that while artificial intelligence may be possible, we should never allow computers to make important decisions because computers will always lack human qualities such as compassion and wisdom. Weizenbaum makes the crucial distinction between deciding and choosing. Deciding is a computational activity, something that can ultimately be programmed. It is the capacity to choose that ultimately makes one a human being. Choice, however, is the product of judgment, not calculation. Comprehensive human judgment is able to include non-mathematical factors such as emotions. Judgment can compare apples and oranges, and can do so without quantifying each fruit type and then reductively quantifying each to factors necessary for mathematical comparison.
