(5) o The inadequacy of man to deserve such compassion. (6-8) o The response of those who have experienced the Lord’s blessing. (9-10) · The believer’s petition as a response towards the Lord’s blessing. (11-17) o The Lord’s unmerited and unceasing lovingkindness form the foundation for our petitions. (11) o The plight of sinful man in a corrupted world. (12-15) o The joy and expectant hope of those who seek the Lord’s salvation (16-17)
Above Reproach – Part 3 Titus 1:9 · A Christian Leader must be devoted to the Word of God. o Holding fast is a single-minded commitment to the truth and principles of God’s Word. o This commitment acknowledges the faithfulness of the Word itself, along with the accurate teaching of it. · A Christian Leader evidences their devotion with their ability to support and defend the Word of God. o To call others towards sound instruction requires the teacher to have personal adherence and acceptance of the message. o The ability to defend the truth is enhanced through a personal knowledge of the truth.

(Titus 1:7) · Characteristics to avoid. o A prideful pursuit of selfish direction. o Impulsive reactions and outbursts. o Vulnerable to controlling influences. o A quarrelsome or violent disposition. o Motivated by earthly gain. · Characteristics to embrace. o Compassionate and loving towards others. o Endeared to that which is good. o Exhibiting stability in various circumstances. o Blameless and upright interactions. o Set apart unto the Lord. o Practicing discipline in life.
Above Reproach – Titus 1:5-9 · Titus’ responsibility to establish church leaders. o One of Titus’ responsibilities was to appoint leaders for the churches in Crete. o This must have been quite the challenge based on the specific qualifications and the significant role the leaders would play. o The phrase above reproach summarizes the qualities required in leadership, character and faith. · The individual’s leadership ability would be evident within their family. o The call to leadership within the church is a requirement of loving care and faithfulness that can be evidenced within the family. o The relationship of the husband and wife is illustrative of the characteristics of Christ towards the church. o The relationship of the father to the children exhibits the training, leadership and shepherding that will be expected of the family of God.
Gospel Perspective – Titus 1:2-3 · FUTURE HOPE o Biblical hope is grounded in a faithful expectation rather than a human conclusion. (Romans 4:18) o Eternal hope is not aimless, but perseverant, faithful and motivating. (Romans 8:24) · PAST PROMISES o The foundations of hope are the promises of a trustworthy God. (1 John 2:25, Hebrews 10:23) o Unwavering belief in God’s promises has been the basis of God’s faithful through history. (Romans 4:20-21, Hebrews 11:13,39) · PARTICULAR TIMES o Across the timeline of History particular times have had specific purposes. (1 Timothy 2:6, 6:15) o Paul identifies his ministry with a particular time, and the letter to Titus speaks to many particulars with purposes.

Joy of Deliverance – Zephaniah 3:14-20 · The description of deliverance. (vs. 14-17) o A joyful occasion for the faithful remnant. (vs. 14) o A removal of judgment, oppression and fear. (vs. 15) o A renewed confidence and courage with the Lord’s presence. (vs. 16-17a) o A relationship of love and support (vs. 17b) o The parallels with the benefits of salvation in Christ are unmistakable. · The restoration of those in exile. (vs. 18-20) o The affliction of the faithful remnant in exile. (vs. 18) o The promise of renewal towards righteousness. (vs. 19) o The expectant outlook towards future restoration. (vs. 20)
THE END? Zephaniah 3:8-13 · The end is not the END. (vs. 8) o Both the wicked and the righteous will wait for judgment, but the expectation will be different. o The nations will benefit from the Lord’s judgment through freedom to draw near to Lord in unity and peace. · There will be a remnant, but they will be distinct. (vs. 11-13) o Arrogance will be replaced with humility. o They will trust in the Lord. o They will live in truth and integrity.
Zephaniah 3:1-7 · Who is this oppressive nation? (vs. 1) o Initially it would appear to be one of the other nations, but it is clearly Judah. · What led them to this condition? (vs. 2) o They never accepted any warning or instruction. o They completely abandoned the Lord. · To what degree had they become so rebellious? (vs. 3-4) o Their leaders were devouring beasts. o Their spiritual leaders were corrupt guides. · Had the Lord abandoned them to this condition? (vs. 5-6) o The Lord exhibited His righteousness daily, without fail. o The Lord’s judgments had clearly been seen. · What was expected of this nation? (vs. 7) o The Lord expected they would heed His instruction and fear His name. o But, instead of daily rising to honor the Lord, they rose to pursue corruption.
Hope of the Remnant – Zephaniah 2 · The Lord’s hand of judgment is revealed on the surrounding nations of Judah. o This global judgment is declared against the nations surrounding Judah including their neighbors and enemies. o The attitude exhibited by these nations is pride which is directed against God’s people and in self-confidence. · The Lord’s declaration against Judah’s neighbors is both a reproach and a promise. o The reproach for Judah is that they, God’s people, will share the same fate as the nations who did not seek Him. o The promise is for the faithful, those who have sought the Lord, and it is for a future hope when the Lord is King over all.

Reversal of Order – Zephaniah 1:2-3 · The Lord’s proclamation to reverse creation. o The Lord declares a sweeping judgment on the earth and mankind in the reverse of its created order. o What would cause the Lord to remove all things from His good creation? · Man’s endless attempts to reorder creation. o Man has been unwilling to submit to God’s authority. o Man has exchanged the Lord for counterfeit gods of their own imagination. o Man has sacrificed the Lord’s blessing for the temporary joys and long-term consequences of their pursuits.

The Path towards Greater Love 1 Thess. 4:9-12 • The Thessalonian believers were excelling at love for one another, yet Paul called them to a greater love. o A greater family love. o A greater God-taught love. o A continuing and abounding love. • The path to greater love involves intentionally seeking to live life in a manner that will provide opportunities to practice love. o Intentional Life • Pursue a peaceful and ordered life. • Pay attention to your own life. • Provide for your needs. o Opportunities to love. • Having respect from the community. • Lacking nothing for yourself.
