Join Pastor Stuart for the fifth lesson in our series, High Hopes. Today, we look at Titus 1:1-4 to hear a message . . . "In Hope of Eternal Life". Today, we are reminded that: The God who never lies has promised eternal life to those who trust in Jesus. The eternal life God promises is not simply about the quantity of life; it is also about the quality of life. The life God promises is the life of the age to come. Even though the full experience of this life is still to come, we who believe already have it. So let's rejoice in the sure and certain hope of eternal life in Christ. As you're serving the Lord in your Daily Walk, you can expect there to be opposition. And as we'll learn today, pastors will face this too, in the ministry. Pastor John Randall opens Titus chapter one, where the leaders in Crete were facing opposition in the form of false teachers. You can be sure false teachers are still around today, but how do we identify them? We're about to find out on a Daily Walk! We've come to expect that certain qualifications are to be met in virtually any line of work. Whether you're a school teacher, a doctor, or mechanic. And the same holds true for a pastor. Today on a Daily Walk we'll notice what should mark the life and ministry of the pastor, as we open up Titus chapter one. He writes to Titus, his true son in the faith, and reminds him of his responsibility to appoint elders in every church. Paul outlines the qualifications for elders, emphasizing that they must be blameless, faithful to their families, self-controlled, upright, and devoted to sound doctrine. These leaders must be able to encourage with the truth and refute those who oppose it. Paul warns about rebellious people with defiled consciences, especially those spreading false teachings for dishonest gain. He instructs Titus to rebuke them sharply so that their faith may be sound and not corrupted by human commands. Leadership in the Lord's church is not about status or personality but character and conviction. We are all influenced by those who teach and lead, so we must be careful to follow those whose lives reflect the truth they speak. Elders are our spiritual examples and protectors. As members of the body of Christ, we also carry responsibility. We must live with integrity, speak with honesty, and be grounded in sound doctrine. We cannot ignore false teaching; we must respond with clarity, conviction, and grace. Whether we lead formally or simply by example, our lives should point others toward truth. We are called to uphold the gospel with both courage and humility, guarding the faith that has been entrusted to us. All-powerful Father, we thank You for the truth of the gospel and the calling to live lives that honor it. Help us to be people of integrity, consistent in our words and actions. Strengthen us to recognize what is false and to stand firm in what is sound. Guide those who lead among us to serve with humility, wisdom, and faithfulness. Teach us to reflect Christ in our homes, our communities, and our churches. May our character speak as clearly as our confession. Let us guard what is good, live without compromise, and be faithful stewards of the truth You have given. Thought Questions: Is it God's design for all local churches to have elders? What role can you play in helping a local church cultivate a strong eldership? How would you describe the character and abilities of an elder? How many of these qualities should you also be pursuing diligently? Describe the type of men who must be silenced in this chapter. How is their unsoundness about more than just getting scripture wrong?

Sound Teaching Leads to Sound Living What are some indicators of unsound teachers in the church? Why does sound teach matter so much? In this episode of the Bible in Life podcast, John reflects on Titus 1:10-16 to answer these questions. Titus 1:10-16 10 For there are many rebellious people, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of dishonest gain. 12 One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. For this reason reprimand them severely so that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not paying attention to Jewish myths and commandments of men who turn away from the truth. 15 To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed. Paul instructs Titus to appoint elders over the new churches that have been established on the island of Crete. Then he gives a list of character qualifications that these new elders must possess. These are the character qualities that must also be present for elders in churches today.
God's People Need Good Shepherds Shepherding is greater than leadership. The consistent image for leaders in the Bible is shepherds. And shepherds are among the sheep. Shepherds know the sheep and the sheep know them. Shepherds provide for and protect the sheep. This is why churches must have good shepherds - leaders, elders, overseers who embody godly character and serve the sheep as shepherds. Titus 1:5-9 5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you, 6 namely, if any man is beyond reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of indecent behavior or rebellion. 7 For the overseer must be beyond reproach as God's steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not overindulging in wine, not a bully, not greedy for money, 8 but hospitable, loving what is good, self-controlled, righteous, holy, disciplined, 9 holding firmly the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it. This week we look at Paul's instruction to Titus found in Titus 1:5-16. Paul left Titus in Crete to "put into order what remained" meaning that Titus' ministry was to bring order into a messy church situation.

Four Fundamentals of a Solid Christian Life | Titus 1:1-4 We never outgrow the fundamentals. This is true in sports or music or an everyday activity like driving. And it's also true in our Christian life. In fact, when life seems overwhelming or confusing or uncertain, one of the best practices is to return to the fundamentals. As Paul opens his letter to his colleague Titus, he reminds him of 4 fundamentals of the Christian life. Titus 1:1-4 1 Paul, a bond-servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those chosen of God and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, 2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago, 3 but at the proper time revealed His word in the proclamation with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior; 4 To Titus, my true son in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
