Theme From Sunday's Sermon: Commitment On this edition of One Single Story, Pastors Stephen Mizell, Sheryl Daughety, and Wendy Korbusieski discuss the following questions: I love reading passionate prayers in Scripture. This is one of those places where David cries out to God for deliverance. What stands out to you about this particular passage? Where do you get the idea of commitment from this verse? The way that God loves us challenges the way that we love others. What do you think about defining commitment as "a refusal to leave" someone even when they fail? It is easy to think of God refusing to leave us after we fail and sin. But how does it change our perspective when we think about staying in a relationship after a great failure? How does it change our perspective if we are the one that greatly failed? The reading for the day is: Leviticus 15:1–16:28 Mark 7:1-23 Psalm 40:11-17 Proverbs 10:13-14

In this chapter of Footnotes, Connor and Nick explore the fascinating differences between Hebrews 10:5—"A body you have prepared for me"—and its Old Testament counterpart in Psalm 40:6-8, which reads "An ear you have dug for me" in the Hebrew. They dive into the implications of these translations, their theological significance, and what they reveal about the body, the Incarnation of Christ, and God's plan of redemption. Join the conversation as they unpack the richness of this text and its profound meaning for our faith.
Question: Psalm 40:6 reads, “Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.” Why did David say this verse when a good chunk of Leviticus made rules on sacrifice?Response: First of all, because he was inspired by the Lord to write this down. Secondly, he's referencing 1 Samuel 15:22, where Samuel was inspired to say, “Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”Further, he is speaking prophetically of the Lord Jesus. Verse 7 of Psalm 40 reads, “Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me.”Hebrews 10:5 explains further, “Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me….”Simply put, David wrote this verse because he was inspired by the Lord to do so and it speaks emphatically of the end of the Levitical sacrifices. In Hebrews 10:9, God inspired the writer to say, “Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.”

Welcome to Day 2542 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2542 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 40:13-17 – Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2542 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2542 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. In today's Wisdom Nugget, we'll conclude our study of Psalm 40 by exploring verses 13 through 17 from the New Living Translation. These closing verses show us David in a moment of urgent prayer, seeking God's help amid trouble, danger, and opposition. In this passage, David demonstrates a remarkable blend of honesty, humility, and trust. As we reflect on these verses, we'll discover how to bring our fears and struggles to God while remaining confident in His power to deliver and protect. Let's start by reading the passage together: Psalm 40:13-17 (NLT) 13 Please, Lord, rescue me! Come quickly, Lord, and help me. 14 May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace. 15 Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, “Aha! We've got him now!” 16 But may all who search for You be filled with joy and gladness in You. May those who love Your salvation repeatedly shout, “The Lord is great!” 17 As for me, since I am poor and needy, let the Lord keep me in His thoughts. You are my helper and my savior. O my God, do not delay. A Cry for Immediate Help (Verse 13): Guthrie: David begins this section with an urgent plea: “Please, Lord, rescue me! Come quickly, Lord, and help me.” These words are simple yet profound, capturing the desperation of someone who knows their only hope lies in God. David doesn't mince words—he gets straight to the point, asking for rescue and assistance with a sense of urgency. This verse is a reminder that we can approach God directly in our moments of need. Whether our struggles are external threats or internal battles, God invites us to cry out to Him. David's prayer shows that we don't need to have polished words or lengthy explanations—what matters is the sincerity of our hearts. Illustration: Imagine a child who trips and falls, immediately crying out, “Daddy, help me!” The parent doesn't pause to analyze the situation or wait for the child to explain—they rush to help because they love their child. Similarly, God is eager to come to our aid when we call on Him with childlike trust and urgency. Seeking Justice for Opponents (Verses 14-15): In verses 14 and 15, David shifts his focus to those who oppose him: “May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace. Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, ‘Aha! We've got him now!'” David's prayer here is a request for justice. He's not seeking personal revenge—he's asking God to deal with his enemies in a way that upholds righteousness and truth. Those who seek to harm him and take...

Welcome to Day 2540 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2540 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 40:9-12 – Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2540 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2540 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. In today's Wisdom Nugget, we will journey into God's Word. In this episode, we'll continue our exploration of Psalm 40, focusing on verses 9 through 12 from the New Living Translation. In these verses, David shifts his focus from personal praise and thanksgiving to sharing God's goodness with others and seeking God's mercy in the face of overwhelming challenges. This passage is a beautiful blend of gratitude, proclamation, and dependence on God, offering profound lessons for our faith journey. Let's begin by reading the passage together: Psalm 40:9-12 (NLT) 9 I have told all Your people about Your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as You, O Lord, well know. 10 I have not kept the good news of Your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about Your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of Your unfailing love and faithfulness. 11 Lord, don't hold back Your tender mercies from me. Let Your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me. 12 For troubles surround me— too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can't see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage. Proclaiming God's Justice and Faithfulness (Verses 9-10): David begins this section with a bold declaration of his commitment to sharing God's justice and faithfulness: “I have told all Your people about Your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as You, O Lord, well know.” David isn't content to keep his experiences with God to himself—he feels compelled to tell others about God's righteousness and saving power. In verse 10, David continues, “I have not kept the good news of Your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about Your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of Your unfailing love and faithfulness.” These verses emphasize the importance of openly declaring God's goodness. David doesn't just whisper his gratitude in private—he proclaims it publicly, ensuring that others can be encouraged and inspired by what God has done. This is a reminder for us as well. Our faith isn't meant to be a private affair. When God works in our lives, it's an opportunity to testify to His greatness, so others might see His hand at work and be drawn to Him. Illustration: Imagine someone who has been rescued from a life-threatening situation—perhaps pulled from a burning building or saved from drowning. Would they keep their gratitude to themselves, or would they share the story with others, highlighting the hero who saved them? David's proclamation is like that. He recognizes that his deliverance isn't just for his benefit; it's an opportunity to point others toward God's faithfulness and love. For us, sharing our testimony doesn't have to be...

Welcome to Day 2538 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2538 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 40:1-8 – Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2538 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2538 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. In today's Wisdom Nugget, we'll explore Psalm 40:1-8 from the New Living Translation. This passage is a heartfelt song of praise and dedication from David, celebrating God's deliverance and expressing a deep desire to do His will. These verses teach us about waiting patiently for God, the joy of His salvation, and the importance of aligning our lives with His purposes. As we walk through this passage, we'll reflect on how David's words can inspire us in our faith journeys today. Let's begin by reading the passage: Psalm 40:1-8 (NLT) 1 I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and He turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. 3 He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what He has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord. 4 Oh, the joys of those who trust the Lord, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols. 5 O Lord my God, You have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all Your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them. 6 You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that You have made me listen, I finally understand— You don't require burnt offerings or sin offerings. 7 Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures: 8 I take joy in doing Your will, my God, for Your instructions are written on my heart.” Waiting Patiently for God (Verse 1): David begins this psalm with a testimony of God's faithfulness: “I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and He turned to me and heard my cry.” These opening words reflect the importance of trusting in God's timing. David doesn't describe how long he waited or how difficult the waiting was, but his tone suggests a season of perseverance. Waiting on God can be one of the most challenging aspects of faith. It requires trust, patience, and a belief that God hears us even when His answers seem delayed. David's testimony reminds us that God does hear our cries, and His response is always right on time. Illustration: I'm reminded of a farmer who plants seeds in the spring and patiently waits for the harvest. He can't rush the process—he must trust that the seeds will grow in due time. Similarly, when we wait on the Lord, we trust He is working behind the scenes to bring about His perfect will. God's Deliverance and Steadfastness (Verse 2): In verse 2, David describes God's deliverance with vivid imagery: “He lifted me out...
