It’s one of the wildest scandals in Hollywood history: In 1951, major Hollywood producer Walter Wanger (Jon Hamm) went to prison for shooting an agent who he suspected was having an affair with Joan Bennett (Zooey Deschanel), Wanger’s actress wife. When the dust settled, Wanger was accepted back into Hollywood’s inner circle with open arms, while a puritan panic virtually ended Bennett’s career in movies and her family would never be the same. How did Joan — the youngest member of one of America’s most famous acting families, and one of the key femme fatales of 1940s film noir — end up a real-life fallen woman, paying a public price for her husband’s crimes? In this limited podcast series, Joan and Walter’s granddaughter/filmmaker Vanessa Hope, and film historian/podcaster Karina Longworth (You Must Remember This), tell the untold story of the Bennett/Wanger romance and professional partnership — a film noir played out in real life.

The Love is a Crime podcast is an incredible journey into the life and career of actress Joan Bennett. As a fan of Dark Shadows, I was always fascinated by her and her work, so getting to hear such an in-depth exploration of her life was truly amazing. The podcast is expertly written and presented, making it both enjoyable and educational. It delves not only into her professional achievements but also into the intriguing backstory of her personal life. The strength she exhibited throughout her life shines through in this podcast, and it's clear that she deserves posthumous appreciation for all that she accomplished.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is the narration and the way tapings and interviews are seamlessly integrated into the episodes. It adds depth and authenticity to the storytelling, making it feel like you're right there with the characters. The portrayal of feminism as an important part of Hollywood history is also commendable. The script is beautifully written and well-presented, showcasing a strong connection to the people involved in Joan Bennett's life. Overall, it's a gripping piece of American and Hollywood history that leaves you wanting more.

However, one downside to this podcast is the frequency and volume of the ads. They can be loud, repetitive, and annoying at times which can distract from the overall enjoyment of the show. It would be great if there was an option to listen to a paid ad-free version for those who prefer a seamless listening experience.

In conclusion, The Love is a Crime podcast truly exceeded my expectations. Karina Longworth's expertise in storytelling shines through once again in collaboration with Vanity Fair and Vanessa Hope. The research done for this series is impeccable, resulting in a compelling narrative that keeps you hooked from start to finish. The addition of personal insights from Joan Bennett's granddaughter adds another layer of depth to the story. Despite some minor flaws like excessive ads, this podcast is highly recommended for film buffs, true crime enthusiasts, and anyone interested in exploring the lives of iconic stars from Hollywood's golden era.
