Send us Fan MailEpisode 116 – The 3rd Person Narration/Paul Schneider/Nick Cave Standoff: The Assassination of Jesse Jame by the Coward Robert Ford v. Train Dreams. All aboard episode 116 of the Triple F—chugging along the tracks laid by legendary filmmaker Terrence Malick, we're discussing two noteworthy films that closely follow his style in recounting tales of the American experience star ting with 2007's The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, directed by Andrew Dominik and starring Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, Sam Shepard, Sam Rockwell, Jeremy Renner, Paul Schneider, Garret Dillahunt, Mary-Louise Parker, Alison Elliott, Zooey Deschanel, Ted Levine, Michael Parks, James Carville, with Hugh Ross as narrator—up against Clint Bentley's Train Dreams, recently watched and retroactively crowned king of the 2025 film mountain, starring Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, William H. Macy, John Diehl, Kerry Condon, Paul Schneider again, Clifton Collins Jr., and Will Patton as narrator, a film that echoes Dominik's approach through its third-person narration, recurring Paul Schneider presence, and a Nick Cave–inflected musical sensibility. Covering me with their scatterguns this week are my usual duo of bushwackers, my kid sis and snooty bookworm Roseanne Caputi and slit-eyed outlaw with enough oat and barley in his voice to give Will Patton and Hugh Ross a run for their money, the one and only Gordon Alex Robertson. Before we start shoveling coal into the engines, the synopses: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert FordOutlaw Jesse James, increasingly paranoid and unpredictable, surrounds himself with a dwindling gang that no longer knows whether he's losing his grip, giving up, or testing their loyalty. Among them is Robert Ford, a devoted admirer whose presence only adds to the tension as trust breaks down within the group. In Train Dreams Robert Grainger, a railroad laborer in the early 20th-century American West, struggles to build a life as isolation and personal loss reshape his world. Are these films of comparable quality or does one tower over the other?Find out!Watch the video version on youtube:

Love Stinks! Month continues its mission to dismantle the "happily ever after" this week on We Drink & We Watch Things with the 2009 indie-staple, 500 Days of Summer. This is the ultimate "not a love story" about a boy who meets a girl, and it's an episode where our own perspectives are as non-linear as the film's timeline. Grab a drink - maybe try Lemar's Sweet Disposition - and join us as we revisit the greeting-card-writer's guide to heartbreak. This week, we tackle the sharp divide in our viewing experiences, as Mackenzie grapples with Tom's projection and entitlement, while Lemar navigates his own deep-seated nostalgia for this quintessential hipster time capsule. We examine Tom's selective memory, looking at how he ignores every "we should just be friends" warning to chase a soulmate fantasy that only exists in his head. We discuss the brilliance of the iconic "Expectations vs. Reality" split-screen sequence, the Hall & Oates dance number that captures the peak of infatuation, and why Zooey Deschanel's Summer is often unfairly vilified for simply being honest about what she wanted. It's a conversation about the danger of romanticizing "bizarro crap" in common and the painful, necessary growth that comes when the seasons finally change. If you've ever found yourself staring at a closed door hoping it would open, or if you just want to hear us debate whether Tom is a hopeless romantic or a "nice guy" nightmare, this is the episode for you. We're blending our conflicting takes with our usual casual banter, making this a perfectly polarized addition to our month of Not-So-Love-Love-Stories. This is not a love story, but it is definitely an episode you'll love. This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming next. During dueling protests outside Gracie Mansion — the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani — two Pennsylvania men allegedly threw improvised explosive devices toward an anti-Islam rally led by far-right activist Jake Lang. The devices, homemade bombs containing TATP explosives and shrapnel such as nuts, bolts, and screws, were ignited but failed to fully detonate, causing no injuries despite their lethal potential. The incident escalated from a small far-right demonstration against an alleged "Islamic takeover" into clashes with counterprotesters, leading to multiple arrests, including the two suspects. Federal authorities charged the men with terrorism-related offenses, including providing material support to ISIS, after they reportedly cited inspiration from the Islamic State group, and one expressed intent to surpass the impact of the Boston Marathon bombing. ~This is a throwback episode that was originally recorded in December 2023.~ The best way to spread Christmas cheer? Singing loud for all to hear! Or, maybe, listening to a podcast about everyone's favorite Christmas movie, Elf! The girls discuss who almost played Buddy The Elf, Jon Favreau's role in making the movie iconic, and how they always forget about blonde Zooey Deschanel! They also cover alllll the behind the scenes facts, like which scene was filmed in one take, how Zooey Deschanel's singing talent was added into the script, and the original (much darker?!) script.Follow us on social!Instagram: @whatwerewatchingpod TikTok: @whatwerewatchingpod
DEFENDANT: Buddy the Elf EVIDENCE: Manos Wines Special Edition "Elf" Prosecco SCENE OF THE CRIME: From the North Pole all the way to Manhattan and back again! -- Hey — glad you made it to our cozy chaos. This episode is basically two things: a heavy pour of festive Prosecco (shoutout to the blingy Manos bottle) and a full-on, goofy love letter to Elf — plus the ridiculous trivia and fan theories that make holiday movies feel like family. We talk traditions, awkward childhood rituals, terrible gift-control impulses, and why some of our favorite seasonal things still hit like warm nostalgia. We nerd out about Elf like it's evidence in a case: Jon Favreau's direction, Will Ferrell's enormous golden-retriever energy, Zooey Deschanel's surprise musical cameo, James Caan's grumpy-dad groove, and even that weird Central Park ranger theory that adds a darker layer if you let it. There are shower scenes, department store mayhem, real-life crowd reactions caught on film, and a few production easter eggs (Wanda name tags and stop-motion nods) that are delightfully silly. Also: yes, we taste the Prosecco. It's festive, metallic, and exactly what you want for toasts — light, apple-y, and not too sweet. We compare it to champagne, Cava, and whatever else you line up on a party table while you argue whether donut holes count as zero calories and whether sparkling wine and popcorn are an acceptable holiday combo. (They are.) We get real about the season, too. If you're feeling pressure to show up for people who drain you, hear us: you don't have to. Treat holiday plans like a dinner party you actually want to attend. Set boundaries, keep what's meaningful, and let the rest go. If all else fails, borrow Buddy the Elf's wide-eyed wonder for a few minutes — it's the best kind of permission slip to feel joy again. So pour yourself something fizzy, fold a little ridiculousness into your traditions, and enjoy the stories — goofy, tender, and truer than you might expect. From our cramped, sparkly loft to wherever you're nesting this season: happy holidays, however you celebrate. Cheers.

Hey! Our Christmas Series kicks off with a newer classic from the 2000s: Elf, starring Will Ferrell, James Caan, Zooey Deschanel, Mary Steenburgen, and Bob Newhart. What kind of nostalgia bump do we give it? How does it hold up against other recent Christmas classics? Found out on this week's Cinemavino! #cinemavino #2000s #Elf #Christmas
In this week's episode of The Kibbe & Friends Show, the crew kicks off the Christmas season with one of the most beloved holiday films of the modern era: Elf. Rob, Corndog, and Bernie dive deep into what makes this 2003 classic so timeless—from Jon Favreau's intentional “Rankin/Bass meets live-action” style, to the practical effects and forced-perspective tricks that give the movie its handmade, storybook charm. They break down everything from Buddy's fish-out-of-water innocence in New York, to Zooey Deschanel's vintage-inspired performance, to the behind-the-scenes choices that turned a goofy comedy script into a heartfelt family movie that has joined the ranks of A Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation as a true annual staple. But being K&F, the review doesn't stop at plot and characters—the guys treat Elf like a full-blown car movie. They dig into the real New York City Crown Vic taxis Buddy dodges throughout the film, talk P-codes and wheelbases, and then go full “Corndog Spec Ops” on the five different sleighs built for production—including which were stunt shells, which survived, and why the hero sleigh might secretly be Mopar-powered. If you love Christmas movies, deep-cut trivia, and automotive rabbit holes disguised as holiday cheer, this is a must-listen episode. We dive into The Happening (2008)—M. Night Shyamalan's infamous eco-thriller starring Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo—to ask: is it secretly camp or truly the worst horror movie ever? Kevin, Nathan, and Gill roast the awkward dialogue (“What? No.” “Why you eyeing my lemon drink?”), break down the lawnmower scene, baffling plot logic, the box office vs. budget, and how slick marketing + a killer trailer sold a stinker. Expect a funny, spoiler-filled movie review, retrospective, and deep-dive analysis touching Rotten Tomatoes, Letterboxd, Shyamalan's career (Signs, Sixth Sense, The Village, Old), and whether this deserves “so bad it's good” status…Your hosts- Kevin, Nathan, and GillProduced by NathanCheck out the video format of this episode on YouTubeFollow Straitjacket Talk on InstagramFollow Straitjacket Talk on Letterboxd-Kevin (KevWrapt)Nathan (NathanEdits)Gill (livingdeadgill)Follow Gill on Goodreads“Dismember” Theme Music by Nathan

Directors John-Michael Powell (VIOLENT ENDS, in theaters now) and David Gordon Green (whose movie ALL THE REAL GIRLS was an early entry in what's become an extremely varied and successful career) are both from Arkansas. Powell's new film, which stars Billy Magnussen, James Badge Dale, and Alexandra Schipp, is a bloody, grimy crime thriller -- a far cry from ALL THE REAL GIRLS' quiet romantic angst. But what the films have in common is an interest in depicting small-town Southerners as real, three-dimensional human beings. That detail both inspired Powell's film career and animates the work he's doing now. He and Jordan get into that and more this week. Then, a pivot! Jordan has one quick thing about the head-spinning melodrama of another film currently in theaters: REGRETTING YOU. Feeling Seen is hosted by Jordan Crucchiola and is a production Maximum Fun.Need more Feeling Seen? Keep up with the show on Instagram and Bluesky.

Nick takes a look back at Saturday Night Live Season 37, a strong and steady run marked by some unforgettable first-time hosts who went on to iconic status, including Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, and Mick Jagger. It was also a season of change, as Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg said their goodbyes, and John Mulaney stepped into his first year as head writer and producer. The episode revisits standout sketches like Alec Baldwin's spot-on Tony Bennett, a bridal shower derailed by a delightfully creepy Emma Stone, and Zooey Deschanel turning quirky into an art form on a talk show parody. Nick also highlights the final outing of the beloved soap opera spoof The Californians, packed with the full cast and a cameo from Steve Martin. Along the way, you'll hear great moments from hosts like Ben Stiller and Channing Tatum, plus some behind-the-scenes stories that make Season 37 a fan favorite worth remembering. [Ep 145]
