HVAC School - For Techs, By Techs
Sizing Breakers and Conductors (for HVAC) – Have Things Changed?

HVAC School - For Techs, By Techs

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 1, 2026 35:40

In this essential episode, Bryan Orr sits down with Elliot, the residential install supervisor at Kalos Services, to unpack a critical issue that's causing confusion among HVAC technicians, electricians, and inspectors alike: the new standards for breaker and conductor sizing on inverter-driven equipment. The conversation was sparked by Elliot's frustrating experience of having two inspectors in the same county fail the same installation for opposite reasons—one for an oversized breaker and another for an undersized breaker. This contradiction led to a deep dive into recent changes in UL standards and how they affect everyday HVAC installations. The heart of the issue stems from the transition to low-GWP refrigerants and the updated UL 60335-2-40 Edition 3 standard, which replaced the 1995 certification approach. This new standard introduced more conservative calculations for electrical characteristics, particularly affecting equipment using A2L refrigerants. The result? Data tags now show higher Minimum Circuit Ampacity (MCA) ratings than before, even though the equipment itself hasn't changed—only the math used to calculate these values has shifted. This has created a puzzling situation where the MCA can be higher than the recommended breaker size, which seems counterintuitive to anyone familiar with traditional electrical principles. Bryan and Elliot clarify the fundamental rule that still applies: size your wire to the MCA and your breaker to the MOCP (Maximum Overcurrent Protector). The confusion arises because manufacturers like Mitsubishi are now including "recommended breaker" sizes on data tags that are lower than the MCA—a courtesy to contractors, not a code requirement. The higher MCA reflects conservative safety margins that account for extreme operating conditions, but in practice, inverter-driven systems have multiple built-in protections that prevent them from ever actually reaching these calculated amperage levels. The key takeaway is that contractors can safely install breakers at the recommended size without safety concerns, as long as the breaker's lugs are rated to accept the wire size required by the MCA. The episode also explores how inverter-driven equipment fundamentally differs from traditional PSC motors, particularly regarding locked rotor amps (now more accurately termed "inverter input") and voltage drop considerations. Unlike conventional motors that simply run slower with reduced voltage, inverter-driven compressors and ECM motors compensate by drawing more current to maintain performance, creating a potential compounding effect with voltage drop that installers need to understand—even though voltage drop itself isn't an enforceable NEC code requirement. Topics Covered: New UL 60335-2-40 Edition 3 standards and their impact on electrical calculations for HVAC equipment The relationship between MCA (Minimum Circuit Ampacity) and MOCP (Maximum Overcurrent Protector) and why they can now seem contradictory Recommended breaker sizes on modern data tags and why they may be lower than the MCA Handling inspector conflicts and failed inspections related to breaker sizing Differences between inverter-driven equipment and traditional PSC motors in electrical behavior The transition from "locked rotor amps" to "inverter input" terminology for modern equipment Voltage drop considerations with inverter-driven systems (NEC 210.19A and 215.2A) Why inverter-driven equipment draws more current at lower voltages compared to traditional motors Proper wire and breaker sizing for A2L refrigerant equipment (454B systems) NEC Section 440 requirements specific to air conditioning and refrigeration equipment Breaker lug ratings and ensuring they can accept the required wire size Practical advice for communicating with inspectors and resolving code disputes   Read the tech tip on this topic HERE. Episode No. 738 is a holiday clips episode featuring artist Wafaa Bilal. Earlier this year the MCA Chicago presented "Wafaa Bilal: Indulge Me," the first major survey of Bilal's work. Across his genres-busting career, the Iraqi-American Bilal has made performances, sculptures and related digital presentations that have interrogated the United States' relationship with and conduct within Iraq, the Middle East, and broader geopolitics. Bilal's work also investigates the notion of cultural cannibalism, the ways in which the culture of one people may be used, disassembled, and consumed by another. "Indulge Me" was curated by Bana Kattan. An invaluable catalogue was published by the MCA. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for $20-32. Bilal's work is in the collections of museums as unalike as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art Qatar. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah UAE; the Art Gallery at NYU Abu Dhabi; and the 2015 Venice Biennale. For images, please see Episode No. 704. An alternative to postbac programs? Postbac programs are okay, but what if there was another path to medical school? M2s Sarah Upton, Alec Marticoff, and Kevin Gubner host the program directors of the Carver College of Medicine’s Masters of Clinical Anatomy Program. Interestingly, each co-host decided to get a MCA to make up for some shortcomings in their med school applications, whether it was soft a GPA or a lack of applicable hard science education. To do that, they could have done any number of things–like an expensive post-baccalaureate program that offers no degree–but instead they chose to seek an MCA degree to pave their way to medical school. Co-directors Marc Pizzimenti and Emma Handler visited with The Short Coat to discuss the program, what it’s like for students, and the additional skills that they got, including instruction in teaching…something they wouldn’t have gotten in a postbac program. In the end, the MCA program not only taught them anatomy–something they’d definitely need as physicians someday–but also helped them fix their undergrad shortcomings, readied them for the rigors of studying medicine, and built their teaching skills–all with an incredible student-faculty ratio they wouldn’t have gotten in many other degree programs. Plus they get to tack on some sweet letters after their names! Recorded live at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago / CAB Tailgate In this live MCA tailgate episode, the Bad at Sports crew — Duncan MacKenzie, Ryan Peter Miller, Brian Andrews, and Jesse Malmed — sit down with Chicago Tribune and Hyperallergic critic Lori Waxman to dig into the past, present, and uncertain future of art criticism.   Lori Waxman speaks candidly about being one of the last remaining "paper critics" in the Midwest, the strange privilege and responsibility of writing for a general audience, and the realities of practicing criticism in a media ecosystem that has largely abandoned it. The conversation moves between the lightly chaotic and the deeply reflective: the team discusses accountability, gatekeeping, democratization, descriptive vs. evaluative criticism, and the uneasy role of critics in shaping a city's cultural memory. A major portion of the episode is devoted to Waxman's long-running performance project "The 60 WRD/Min Art Critic," which she describes as part-service, part-performance, part-publishing experiment — one that temporarily gives a community something most cities no longer have: a local critic writing about local work. From describing her process of writing in public (fully clothed), to fielding questions about dead artists, visibility, taste, and how critics navigate their own spreadsheets, Waxman opens up her practice with humor and clarity. The episode also includes reflections on Chicago's art ecology, journalism's collapse, how artists use reviews, and what it means to keep going when the platforms keep disappearing. Recorded live at the CAB6 × MCA Tailgate This episode was recorded as part of the Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB6) activation on the plaza of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, where Bad at Sports staged a series of open-air interviews, community dialogues, and tailgate-style broadcasts. Artists, architects, students, and the public intersected in a shared social space designed for porous conversation. Episode 920 features Tony Lewis, whose practice has shaped Chicago's contemporary drawing discourse for more than a decade. In this conversation, Tony Lewis joins Bad at Sports for an unscripted outdoor interview on the MCA plaza during the Architecture Biennial. The discussion moves fluidly between Lewis's formative years in Chicago, the evolution of his drawing practice, his relationship to language systems (notably shorthand), and the material intelligence behind works that incorporate rubber bands, graphite, or constraint mechanisms. Lewis reflects on mentorship, studio discipline, the importance of failure and patience, and the way drawing becomes a long-term conversation with materials. He speaks candidly about the Chicago art ecosystem, the emotional dimensions of his practice, and the shifting sense of scale and intimacy in his recent work — including his Louis Bag series and large graphite constructions. Together we wade into the deeper waters of the second half of life — aging, character, grief, spiritual maturity, limitations, and the sacred invitation to move from doing to being. Steve speaks candidly about the shifting landscape of life at 67: the habits that no longer serve him the tender emergence of compassion learning to sit with grief rather than outrun it the uncomfortable art of slowing down how filmmaking and teaching have reshaped his inner life and the courageous (and often comical) struggle of a Seven learning to live in the present moment We talk about marriage, mortality, the ache of unfinished dreams, the sweetness of gratitude, the pains and gifts of aging, and the spiritual practices that are slowly rewiring Steve's relationship with presence. Get 30% off three months at beehiiv.com/chris━I sat down with Ace Enders from The Early November to unpack how money actually moves in music and what it really takes to make a living today. We get into the old label world of advances, recoupment, and why most bands made their money on touring and merch, not album sales. Ace shares what happened when Drive-Thru Records deals flowed up to MCA, why the mid-2000s shift to streaming left so many royalties in limbo, and why a stream paying roughly $0.007 changes how you release music now. We talk touring math at the 1,000-cap level, venue merch cuts, the push-pull between depth and virality, and how artists navigate identity, mental health, and the pressure to keep performing. We also riff on the “messy middle,” the rise of AI music, and why Ace still loves simple, hands-on businesses like cleaning parking lots at 4 a.m. If you want to support Ace, grab the new Ace Enders album dropping on Halloween and pick up the vinyl or hit a show.Enjoy! ---Watch this on YouTube instead here: tkopod.co/p-ytAsk me a question on or off the show here: http://tkopod.co/p-askLearn more about me: http://tkopod.co/p-cjkLearn about my company: http://tkopod.co/p-cofFollow me on Twitter here: http://tkopod.co/p-xFree weekly business ideas newsletter: http://tkopod.co/p-nlShare this podcast: http://tkopod.co/p-allScrape small business data: http://tkopod.co/p-os---

From the flashlight-with-Dad origin story and reading The E-Myth 33 times (and later co-authoring the trades edition with Michael Gerber) to teaming with the Wizard of Ads, Ken reveals why most owners crash before they cash out—and the 3-year plan he uses to sprint a business from busted to bankable. Here's the real playbook: join a best-practice group, quantify everything, and buy momentum—if the phone's ringing, there's value. Tell a story that sells so buyers line up. Steer clear of MCA debt (or renegotiate fast), remove bottlenecks, recruit killers, and spot nine-figure opportunities hiding in plain sight. If you're serious about scaling—or selling—this is your wake-up call to document, differentiate, and sprint for 1,000 days.

This week on The Art of SBA Lending, we sit down with Everett Sands, a leader who successfully propelled Lendistry into the top tier of the nation's SBA 7(a) lenders. Everett explains his approach to SBA lending, which involves applying lessons learned from other industries like residential and auto lending to an industry he feels is decades behind.   As a fintech and a CDFI, Lendistry occupies a unique space in the market. Everett discusses how his company is leveraging technology and a mission-driven approach to win customers by offering a better, more user-friendly experience than predatory online lenders. He challenges the traditional, anecdote-driven banking model and argues that by embracing data, AI, and streamlined processes, the industry can better serve the small business community and protect its "home turf" from bad actors.

SEASON 2 - EPISODE 155 - Fred Specktor - Agent In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with agent Fred Specktor (CAA). Fred has actually seen it all—now in his 90s, he joined the mailroom at MCA (before its dissolution) after graduating college, and he's been in the business ever since. After a stint as movie mogul Lew Wasserman's assistant at MCA, Fred was fired, and he recounts his journey bouncing between outfits until landing at CAA where he has represented top Hollywood talent for the past four decades. Fred's long career as an agent is populated with moments such as networking at a car accident and attending an acting class with Jack Nicholson, and he shares many of them with us throughout the episode. We also discuss the differences in Hollywood, moviegoing, and filmmaking between today and the previous century, and we learn how he still tackles his work with verve after a lifetime on the job. Plus, Fred makes his prediction for the future of the movies. - If you enjoy listening to Fred, we recommend reading THE GOLDEN HOUR. Fred's career and life is one of the subjects of the novel which was written by previous guest (and Fred's son) Matthew Specktor (Season 2, Episode 146). - This episode is sponsored by Aputure & Barco

The Industrial Real Estate Podcast
Inside MCA's Small-Bay Industrial Playbook

The Industrial Real Estate Podcast

In this episode of the Industrial Real Estate Show, Tyler Maddox from MCA Realty shares his 35-year journey from brokerage to leading a Western US-focused industrial investment firm. MCA targets small to mid-bay industrial properties in primary and secondary markets from Texas westward, avoiding tertiary areas due to lower liquidity. Starting in 2011, they concentrated on multi-tenant assets with below-market rents, improving and stabilizing them before selling or refinancing. Their first fund of $50 million launched in 2020, followed by a $100 million second fund in 2024. Maddox explains that their strategy has remained consistent through market shifts, focusing on under-managed assets owned by private investors and upgrading them to capture rent growth, while minimizing risk through tenant diversity. He emphasizes that small-bay industrial is operationally intensive compared to big-box single-tenant buildings, with challenges such as managing mom-and-pop tenants, short leases, credit risk, and varying eviction laws. Despite these hurdles, limited new supply supports resilience in rents and occupancy. Maddox also notes emerging issues like increasing tenant power demands amid strained electrical infrastructure, as well as opportunities in industrial condominiums for owner-users. He credits MCA's success to quick decision-making, discretionary capital, and a strong, complementary team, and sees continued long-term opportunity in the small-bay space due to its scarcity and tenant demand.About Tyler:Mr. Mattox is a Principal at MCA Realty and is responsible for directing the investment related activities including the acquisition, development and disposition of all investments, as well as oversight on the firms asset management. Mr. Mattox has over 33 years of broad based real estate experience.Prior to MCA Realty, Mr. Mattox was the Principal Owner of Mattox Property Services, an opportunistic real estate investment and development company that identified and acquired underperforming assets. In this role, he managed all facets of the repositioning process, including acquisitions, financial underwriting, debt and equity capitalization and physical due diligence. Prior to the formation of Mattox Property Services, Mr. Mattox was employed by CBRE and during his tenure rose to the level of Senior Vice President, the highest office available to producers at the time of his departure.Connect with Tyler:Website: https://mca-realty.com/tyler-mattox/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tyler-mattox-6723218--

Understanding Voltage Drop - Short #251

HVAC School - For Techs, By Techs

In this short podcast episode, Bryan drops some knowledge to help with understanding voltage drop, a few different causes of it, and NEC recommendations. Voltage is electrical potential or "pressure," and voltage drop is the reduction in electrical potential energy. We often think of it happening across conductors (which add resistance), but it also happens across loads (like contactor coils). Voltage drop across loads is usually designed, but voltage drop across conductors is usually undesigned and undesirable.  Several factors contribute to conductor resistance. Length is a major one; long runs of wire introduce more resistance to the circuit than shorter runs. Size/gauge also matters; smaller-gauge wire has more resistance than larger-gauge wire. Copper is the most common material for wiring, but we use other materials (including steel or aluminum), and those have different resistance values. Temperature also affects resistance, as they both increase and decrease as the other one does.  When we measure voltage drop, we want to make sure we're doing it under load, NOT on startup. Voltage drops that happen on startup can be mitigated with more suitable infrastructure (including larger wires) or soft starts.  Undersized conductors don't have sufficient cross-sectional area for the applied load. To avoid voltage drop due to undersized conductors, we should size conductors based on minimum circuit ampacity (MCA), not breaker size (MOCP). Poor connections can also cause resistance to jump, which reduces voltage; we need to pay attention to the connection design (including torque specs and proper lugging) to avoid making mistakes. Long wires don't cause overheating by themselves, but they still contribute to voltage drop and cause reduced performance (including drawing higher current on startup).   Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? The Modern Art Notes Podcast

Episode No. 708 features artist Paul Pfeiffer. The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is showing the retrospective "Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom." For over 25 years, Pfeiffer has investigated spectacle and mass culture, especially sport, and has found within it the power to create and extend political narratives. Included within the exhibition is only the second US presentation of Pfeiffer's landmark 2007 The Saints, an immersive sound and video installation that considers the 1966 men's World Cup final between England and West Germany that is one of the most significant works of the 21st century. "Pfeiffer" was curated by Clara Kim and Paula Kroll. The MCA presentation, which is on view through August 31, was organized by Bana Kattan with Iris Colburn. The exhibition catalogue was published by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and MACK. Amazon offers it for $65. Instagram: Paul Pfeiffer, Tyler Green.
