Twenty years ago, this tragic romantic drama took the world by storm by becoming a suprise international box office hit along with garnering massive acclaim.  It even eventually won a few Academy awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Socre, and most importantly Best Director for Ang Lee who was coming off of directing two more action-oriented blockbusters before this, Hulk and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.  This film's story focuses on two ranchhands just trying to make a living as they embark on herding a massive flock of sheep around the titular Brokeback Mountain.  They are Ennis DelMar (Heath Ledger nominated for his performance) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal, also nominated for his) and over severals alone together on this journey, they develop a friendship which eventually becomes something more....And then we watch over the next twenty years as they keep periodically meeting up even as their lives get increinaly complicated with jobs, marriages, kids, and feelings. :o What results is a beautifully crafted tragic love story which not only broke some barriers given its subject matter but also built up a strong legacy over time as one of a select few modern classics which infamously lost the Best Picture Oscar to a far inferior film. (Crash)  What better way to kick off Pride Month 2025 than to revisit this iconic love story! Send us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Director Andrew DeYoung has always had an eye for awkwardness ("Pen15," "Our Flag Means Death," and "Dave"), but with his debut feature, "Friendship," he goes from TV's quirky corners straight to the deep end of the cringe pool. You want relatable pain, emotional chaos, and jokes so uncomfortable you laugh, wince, and maybe break out in hives? Look no further. With a cast including Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd, Kate Mara, and Jack Dylan Grazer, "Friendship" is the rare buddy comedy that leaves you feeling equal parts seen, unsettled, and surprisingly moved.DeYoung joins Mike DeAngelo on the latest episode of The Discourse. It was clear he's still riding the high from sharing his first feature with audiences at TIFF. "[The screening] went incredibly - more than I could have ever imagined. I've been in a theater that's laughing like that, and that wasn't necessarily my goal." Deyong said. "Of course, I wanted people to find this funny and interesting and whatnot, but to hear people laugh at that level was really a surprise."READ MORE: ‘Friendship' Review: Tim Robinson Is Riotously Hilarious In A24's Absurdist, Nightmare-Fueled Cringe Comedy

Joe the King was the directorial debut of long-time career supporting actor and occasional indie leading man Frank Whaley, who also wrote the script based partly on his own life. It stars Noah Fleiss in the title role, Karen Young, John Leguizamo, Whaley's friend and frequent collaborator Ethan Hawke, Camryn Manheim, Max Ligosh, a very young Kate Mara, and Whaley's The Doors co-star, the late Val Kilmer. as Joe's abusive alcoholic father. Critics were kind of all over the place about Joe the King, a film very much of its time, although the performances, especially those of Fleiss and Kilmer, were widely praised. Joe the King was given a very limited release on October 15, going on to gross just $60,000, but a few those dollars once belonged to our guest for this episode, Zaki Hasan, who actually saw it in a movie theater 26 years ago. Among the films you can see soon are the return of Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively to the world of simple favor. Hopefully audiences won't have to wait too long to see the solo directorial debut of Jay Duplass or the latest from Matt Johnson that pays homage to the world of Robert Zemeckis and Rosamund Pike & Matthew Rhys desperately try to get to the scene of their daughter's accident, Daisy Ridley has to dodge zombies and a pair of brothers take a leisurely stroll through San Francisco with their guitars in a single take. Coincidentally commemorating the 9 year anniversary of what's been dubbed one of the worst superhero movies ever made, we watched Josh Trank's 2015 mega-flop Fantastic Four a.k.a. Fant4stic this week. Doomed from the start by the competing forces of a hot young director and a studio trying to compete with the media conglomerate that will buy them two years later, the resulting attempt to reboot the Fantastic Four into darker, Cronenbergian territory was not so fantastic. It's stinks actually, but who's really to blame? Josh Trank? Fox? Kate Mara's wig? With the MCU's own iteration of Marvel's first family on the horizon, the time has finally come for us to figure out exactly what went wrong.  Featuring the debut of our new fourth mic: Kevin Nguyen. Watch exclusive never before seen interviews with Kate Mara, Brett Gelman, and Creator & Executive Producer Ian Faison of Caspian Studios.Murder in HR is a murder mystery podcast starring Kate Mara as Jemma, the newest Employee Experience Manager at tech start-up Peace of Ship. It's her first day, and she's being onboarded by her new Chief People Officer Nicholas, played by Brett Gelman. But when Larry, the company's travel manager, is electrocuted during the company All-Hands, Jemma uncovers a terrible secret: It was murder! With Nicholas's help, Jemma must use her HR skills to investigate her toxic colleagues – without becoming the next victim.Hear from the actors and story creators on how it all came to life! After we recorded with Kate and Brett in Los Angeles, they shared with us why they chose to take on these roles.“‘Jemma' is this smart, weird, quirky person who is given this seemingly impossible task to solve a murder in three days – and she is eternally optimistic about it.” said Kate Mara, who is starring in the podcast and an executive producer. “Nothing seems to rattle her. A toxic workplace, assassins, snakes, or robots. And she still wants to do her job and help everyone around her. The idea of playing a detective who is so positive and dedicated is exciting. I think the audience will love the comedy and satire in the story.”Brett Gelman is starring in the series and an executive producer.“I wanted to play Nicholas because I think it's an amazing opportunity to play a character who is supposedly in the power position but is actually not,” said Gelman. “There's something really beautifully sensitive about him. He really is in the job to help people and that a lot of the humor from the character comes from an anxiety of not being able to do that in the right way and from the mistakes that he's made as well.”This podcast is sponsored by Gympass.

Hurricane Idalia is taking aim at Florida and it's brutal. Idalia is expected to be a rapid intensification hurricane, picking up steam over the Gulf of Mexico, which has had record warm water. Water temperatures off southern Florida were measured at 100 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas this summer. Because of that, Idalia could set a record for her intensification rate. She will likely to turn angry very fast bringing heavy rain, punishing winds, storm surges and real danger. Add to this that where Idalia is headed is unprecedented. She's expected to pummel Apalachee Bay in the Big Bend area where Florida's panhandle meets its peninsula. Since records were kept starting in 1851, the only major hurricanes in this area have been Hurricane Easy in 1950 and the 1896 Cedar Keys Hurricane. Forecasters say Idalia will be life-altering for communities in the area with storm surges in the 10- to 15-foot range. The federal trial for former President Donald Trump is set for March 4th of 2024. This day was the presidential inauguration day for most of America's history.
