You’re probably thinking at this point, “what the blue hell are you even talking about?” All will be revealed. Also being revealed is the Real World Horror of a witch doctor releasing a swarm of bees in the courtroom where he’s being tried for, you guessed it, witchcraft. We also discuss Horror Business about Halloween Horror Nights being taken over by vampires, Jason Voorhees coming to Dead by Daylight, and a couple of notable remakes. We also examine a new trilogy from the legend Dario Argento. For our film reviews, we discuss a hotel full of devil worshippers, invincible serial killers, and Shnevely from Harry Potter (you remember Shnevely) in They Will Kill You. We also take a trip to the brightly painted nightmare realm of Monkey’s Magic Merry Go Round and descend into madness, surrounded by puppets.  So get up, get down, and party hardy with The Grave Plot Podcast!

Suspiria (1977), Inferno (1980), and Mother of Tears (2007) There are very few horror fans out there who don't know the work of Dario Argento, especially the giallo films he's most famous for. While he only occasionally ventured into supernatural horror, whenever he did, he approached it with the same unmistakable style that defines all of his work. After helping define the giallo genre with Deep Red, Argento shifted gears and gave us Suspiria, a film that presented violence through a blinding explosion of color and an intense soundtrack that pounds through the speakers. It looked unlike anything audiences had really seen before. Three years later, Argento continued the saga of the dreaded Three Mothers with Inferno, expanding the mythology surrounding these wicked witches even further. Then, after a 27-year wait, he completed the trilogy with Mother of Tears. Say what you will about any or all of these films, but they are all unmistakably Dario Argento. In this episode, we're taking a look at all three entries in the Three Mothers trilogy, exploring both the mythology behind the Three Mothers and the unique qualities that set each film apart. We all have our favorite of the trilogy, but hopefully you'll come away with a new appreciation for moments or ideas you may have overlooked in previous viewings. So join us for our little study group as we dive into the worlds of Mater Suspiriorum, Mater Tenebrarum, and Mater Lachrymarum. But a word of caution… they don't like people knowing about them, so be warned. Films mentioned in this episode: The Beyond (1981), The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), The Black Cat (1989), Cannibal Ferox (1981), The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971), The Church (1989), Deep Red (1975), Demons 2 (1986), The Exorcist (1973), Eyes Without a Face (1960), The Five Days (1973), Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971), Häxan (1922), The House by the Cemetery (1981), Inferno (1980), Mother of Tears (2007), Night of the Eagle aka Burn Witch Burn (1962), Opera (1987), Phantom of the Paradise (1974), Suspiria (1977), Tenebrae (1982)

This week, Patreon supporter Matt Bates, the Black Country Vlogger, brings us Innocent Blood (1992) for our Pain and Pleasure theme -- a film that revels in the push and pull between the two. Innocent Blood (1992) came about in a roundabout way, which is fitting for a film that defies easy categorisation. John Landis had originally been developing a vampire project called Red Sleep -- a wild premise about Las Vegas being run by vampires -- before Warner Bros. passed and handed him a first-time script by Michael Wolk. The film had an entirely different trajectory before Landis came aboard -- Jack Sholder had been set to direct with Lara Flynn Boyle and Dennis Hopper in the leads before creative differences saw all three replaced. Landis cast French actress Anne Parillaud fresh off La Femme Nikita, and filmed primarily in Pittsburgh's Little Italy neighbourhood after a location visit changed his original plan to shoot in Philadelphia. The MPAA initially slapped it with an NC-17, forcing further cuts to secure an R rating. Landis described his vision as "a Hammer film directed by Scorsese." It opened in September 1992 to a modest domestic gross but has since built a devoted cult following among fans of horror-comedy and 90s vampire films.Find Matt here - https://www.youtube.com/c/blackcountryvloggerTRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISIn a world where the streets of Pittsburgh run red... one woman has a code. StageFright (1987), The Church (1989), and Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) Most horror fans are at least familiar with the Italian horror tradition, even if they aren't deeply immersed in it. Directors like Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, and Joe D'Amato helped define one of the most prolific and influential horror movements in cinema history, producing a remarkable run of classic films over more than three decades. By the mid-1990s, however, that wave had largely collapsed. Yet, in the final stretch of that "era of terror," horror fans were given something special: four films from a young director named Michele Soavi. Soavi's path into directing was a gradual ascent through the industry. He began as an actor, which got him onto sets, then worked his way up through roles as a crew member and assistant director before eventually stepping behind the camera himself. Along the way, he trained under filmmakers like Joe D'Amato, Lucio Fulci, Lamberto Bava, and Dario Argento, experiences that helped him develop a distinctive voice of his own. In this episode, we're covering three of those four films, more than enough to make the case for seeking them out if you've never seen them, or revisiting them if it's been a while. Because sometimes, it's easy to forget just how damn good they really are. Films mentioned in this episode: Absurd (1981), Amok Train aka Beyond the Door III (1989), Body Count (1986), Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), The Church (1989), City of the Living Dead (1980), Dario Argento's World of Horror (1985), Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), Demons (1985), Fatal Frames (1996), Ghosthouse (1988), I, Vampir (1957), Nightbreed (1990), Opera (1987), The Sect (1991), StageFright (1987), Suspiria (1977), Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972), Zombi 3 (1988), Zombie 5: Killing Birds (1988)

Italian prog rock band Goblin found their destiny during the second half of the 1970's when they became the go-to musical score composers for the hot-shot horror movie directors of Italy. Bring Me The Axe! Horror Podcast

This week we're heading north to the 51st state of Canada for a listener request. It's Curtains, the 1983 slasher film from producer Peter Simpson who last brought you the smash hit Prom Night. Directed (partially) by cinematographer Richard Ciupka, Curtains is a gigantic mess of a whodunnit that had ambitions to be a North American riff on the movies of Dario Argento and Mario Bava, an arty, very European approach to a violent murder mystery in the giallo style. Unfortunately, this was not what the producers expected and Ciupka bailed on the entiree project leaving it on the shelf for a year before Simpson himself took it down and dragged it across the finish line. In Curtains five young women gather at the home of director John Stryker, a megalomaniac auteur director with designs on producing a film called Audra but not that long ago he was planning on producing it with his muse, Samantha Sherwood who had herself committed to a mental hospital for research. While inside, Stryker moved on from her but now she's out and pissed off. But what's this? A mysterious killer is knocking them all off one by one. An ill wind is blowing in the Swiss Alps, and it's going to take the combined might of a psychic teenager, a Scotsman in a wheelchair and a chimpanzee called Inga to do something about it - if they can hear themselves think over Iron Maiden being played at full blast. Rod and Adrian are tackling the maestro Dario Argento for the first time, but thankfully it's one of his more restrained efforts to make it easier. Donald Pleasence naturally gets plenty of air time, but also discussed is the continued ineptitude of the Italian/ Swiss police, what to do with several million unwanted flies and why you would try to escape in a boat when there's a perfectly good road right there to run down. It's a new season, dedicated to that great quiet man of British cinema, Donald Pleasence, who spent a great deal of time in the 1980s in Italy. We would love to hear from you about your favourite Donald Pleasence films from this period, or if you have ever been attacked by a chimp. You can get in touch with us, follow us on social media, buy our merch, and all that stuff, through our Linktree. This episode of 'Horror Joy' delves into Luca Guadagnino's 2018 reimagining of 'Suspiria.' Brian and Jeff explore the themes of academic horror, feminism, and political violence within the film's setting of post-war Berlin. We compare Guadagnino's version to Dario Argento's original 1977 film, discussing the significant differences, including the portrayal of witchcraft and the regulation of bodies in an academic setting. We highlight the film's complex power structures and touches on the role of music, dance, and cinematic techniques in creating horror. The discussion also questions Guadagnino's claim of making a feminist film, examining the intricate dynamics between the characters and the violent depiction of women's bodies. We find a blend of intellectual and emotional engagement in the film, despite their mixed feelings about some aspects.  Breathing Back the History of German Modern Dance through the Horror Film Genre in Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria (2018) by Wesley LimEntanglement In Time: Nostalgic Affect As Cine-Choreography In The White Crow (2018) And Suspiria (2018) by Kaixuan YaoRadically Feminist or Monstrously Feminine?: Witches and Goddesses in Guadagnino's Suspiria (2018)Goddesses in Guadagnino's Suspiria (2018) by Lindsay MacumberRoberts, John W. “Dancing the Dance of Another: Allegory, the Diagram, and Suspiria (2018).” Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture, vol. 45, no. 1–2, Dec. 2023, pp. 33–64. In this episode we take a trip to Italy for a look at Massimo Dellamano's 1972 giallo, What Have You Done To Solange? This Italian/German co-production was intended to capitalize on both the popularity of giallo in Italy and krimi in Germany, casting an array of English and German actors familiar to fans of krimi and Italian stars of the time for those who can't get enough giallo. A fairly grim entry into the canon, What Have You Done To Solange is a strong starting point for horror fans looking to go beyond the well-known giallo titles from Dario Argento and Mario Bava. We go over the history of giallo, the people who made it, and the economic conditions in Italy which led to its proliferation. In the story, Enrico Rosseni, a horn-dog gymnastics coach comes under suspicion in a series of brutal murders. The victims are all schoolgirls from his team and to make matters worse, his teenage girlfriend, witnessed one of the murders. He'll team up with the police and his severe German wife to crack the code and discover the real murderer, their motive, and learn the identity of the mysterious Solange, who seems to be at the center of all this. In this episode of Horror Joy, Brian and Jeff jump headlong into academic horror. Their firs stop is Dario Argento's 1977 class, Suspiria. We explore themes such as ritualized violence, paranoia, and the cult-like power dynamics of a coven of witches who both govern and are governed by the institution. We highlight the vivid colors, atmospheric elements, and unsettling soundtrack that is used to convey meaning and evoke fear. We delve into the use of witches not as symbols of feminist empowerment but as tools of misogyny, driven by the male gaze. Additionally, we consider the idea of suppressed queer and feminine elements in a drab world. We conclude with a look at the film's reliance on practical effects over CGI, setting a joyful yet terrifying tone.Kristeva, Julia. Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection. Translated by Leon S. This week on The Rotten Horror Picture Show Podcast, Clay and Amanda are taking a trip into the strange, dreamlike world of Dario Argento's 1985 cult oddity Phenomena. It's one of Argento's most notorious films from his wildly experimental '80s era — full of surreal imagery, pulsing Goblin music, murder mysteries, and a young Jennifer Connelly wandering through the Swiss countryside. Clay and Amanda break down the film's off-the-wall tone, its place in Argento's career, and why Phenomena stands out even among the director's already very weird filmography. It's stylish, confusing, beautiful, and deeply unsettling in ways that only Argento could manage. Now, I should probably admit something up front: I haven't actually seen Phenomena. But I'm still excited! Why? Because I've been assured — by absolutely no one — that there are probably no bugs in it. And that's important to me. Bugs and I do not get along. Spiders? No. Beetles? Absolutely not. Anything with too many legs or a weird crunch? I'm out. Horror movies already ask a lot of me emotionally — I don't need ants crawling into my soul on top of it.So I'm going into this episode feeling optimistic. An Argento movie without bugs sounds great! Just some light murder, some eerie atmosphere, maybe a monkey with a razor (that's fine), but definitely no swarming insects, crawling larvae, or close-ups of mandibles clicking together. Clay and Amanda seem excited, which reassures me. They wouldn't do that to me, right? They know my boundaries. Surely.Anyway, if you're a fan of Italian horror, surreal storytelling, or films that operate entirely on nightmare logic, this episode is for you. I'll be listening too — cautiously, fingers crossed, telling myself everything is fine. And if at any point they mention insects, flies, maggots, or entomology in general? I will be screaming, throwing my headphones, and pretending this episode never happened. But until then, I'm happy. Ignorance is bliss. And do forget to head over to patreon.com/thepenskyfile to follow along this year as Clay and Amanda do a deep dive on sequels!

Mihailoff, the film follows a woman obsessed with the myth of the Pig People as disappearances begin to pile up.Lewis opens up about what first pulled him into the project, from the strength of the script to the way the story's third act completely flipped his expectations. He talks about the power of real folklore, how legends seep into the subconscious, and why stories like Pig Hill feel unsettling long after the credits roll. The conversation explores how Pig Hill differs from expectations shaped by Willy's Wonderland, leaning more into psychological horror and emotional tension rather than pure chaos. Lewis breaks down his creative mindset as a filmmaker, explaining how he always approaches his work as a fan first and why horror audiences are some of the most passionate and forgiving out there.Lewis also dives into the hands-on process behind the film's practical effects and creature design, working closely with legendary effects artist Jason Baker. He discusses the challenge of creating something iconic that feels timeless, while balancing cinematic realism with a dreamlike, giallo-inspired visual style influenced by filmmakers like David Lynch and Dario Argento. The discussion touches on walking the fine line between gore and suggestion, the importance of letting the audience's imagination do the work, and which scenes proved the most challenging to shoot under tight indie conditions. Lewis reflects on how limitations often push creativity and why trusting your gut can lead to some of the film's most memorable moments.Lewis also looks ahead, teasing several upcoming projects and sharing his excitement for continuing to make genre films for fans who love bold, weird, and unforgettable storytelling.Pig Hill is now available on VOD from Cineverse.Visit Nerdtropolis.comhttps://www.Facebook.com/nerdtropolishttps://Instagram.com/nerdtropolishttps://Twitter.com/nerdtropolis

This week, we step into the dance academy and compare two radically different nightmares: Dario Argento's Suspiria (1977) and Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria (2018). Same premise, same title — completely different approaches to horror. We break down how Argento's original became a technicolor fever dream of sound, style, and supernatural menace, while the 2018 remake transforms the story into a slow-burn exploration of trauma, power, and political horror. From neon lighting and Goblin's iconic score to muted palettes and oppressive dread, these films feel less like remake and original and more like alternate realities. Is one version definitively better, or do they succeed in entirely different ways? We discuss atmosphere, performances, themes, and why Suspiria remains one of the most fascinating examples of how horror can be reimagined without losing its soul.   Today we are joined by Heather Stewart of The Revisionist Almanac!   Check out the Revisionist Almanac here: https://open.spotify.com/show/0k1pTUl2hYrgIiZpziFQTv?si=1bf52adfdd7c49c8       Follow Us on Instagram and TikTok: @horrorhourwiththehannas   Music by Aries Beats - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPpnxLYrzVA
