Im Interview mit Eric M. Lang, einem der bekanntesten Brettspielautoren, wurden viele spannende Aspekte seines Lebens und seiner Karriere behandelt. Lang ist bekannt für seine erfolgreichen Spiele wie "Blood Rage", "Cthulhu: Death May Die" und "Marvel United". Sein Durchbruch kam 2002 mit der Zusammenarbeit mit Fantasy Flight Games, wo er das "Game of Thrones Collectible Card Game" entwarf. Die darauffolgende Erfolgsgeschichte des Unternehmens half ihm, seine kreativen Ambitionen zu verwirklichen. Eric sprach auch über sein erstes Spiel in Essen 1996, das den Grundstein für seine Karriere legte und ihm die Möglichkeit gab, von anderen Verlagen zu lernen. Das Gespräch wandte sich dann den Projekten zu, an denen Lang gearbeitet hat, einschließlich seiner Arbeit mit Cool Mini or Not, wo das Spiel Blood Rage entstand. Na de wapenstilstand in de Amerikaans-Chinese handelsoorlog, die Donald Trump en Xi Jinping overeenkwamen, wordt het steeds duidelijker dat Xi de winnaar is. Of Trump het helemaal door heeft is niet duidelijk, maar het is Xi die de spelregels bepaalt. Trump denkt dat hij heeft gewonnen omdat hij een heffing van 47 procent op Chinese producten handhaaft, en omdat China de stopzetting van de levering van zeldzame aardmetalen een jaartje heeft uitgesteld. Voor een tansactionele leider als Trump is dat een goed resultaat. Xi ziet de overeenkomst met Trump niet als een verdrag maar hooguit als een nuttig gesprek. De kou is een beetje uit de lucht en dat heeft de schijn van wat Chinezen heel belangrijk vinden: harmonie. In werkelijkheid was de ontmoeting een nieuwe bouwsteen in de strategie waaraan China al 20 jaar werkt, dus die al begon onder Xi’s voorganger Hu Jintao. Die strategie komt erop neer dat China ernaar streeft een geheel op zichzelf staande economie te worden. In een uitstekende analyse in de New York Times wordt het beeld geschetst van een land dat de economische zelfstandigheid op alle fronten bevecht. Lang niet alle Chinese producten kunnen zich kwalitatief meten met westerse, maar dan moet de burger maar genoegen nemen met een tandje lager. En voor steeds meer producten geldt het omgekeerde: die doen kwalitatief inmiddels niet meer onder voor de westerse concurrentie, en zijn vaak zelfs beter. De auto-industrie is een lichtend voorbeeld. Het gevecht van westerse merken om hun positie op de Chinese markt te behouden is een verloren strijd. Chinezen hebben geduld – ze zijn er tenslotte al twintig jaar mee bezig – maar het doel is de import tot een absoluut minimum te reduceren, terwijl hun producten of grondstoffen voor het Westen onmisbaar zijn. Zoals farmaceutische producten, accu’s, zonnepanelen, elektronica, aardmetalen. Er zijn twee producten waarvan de Chinezen zelf zeggen nog stevig achter te lopen: hoogwaardige halfgeleiders en vliegtuigonderdelen. Maar ook die kloof zijn ze van plan te overbruggen, en ze nemen er alle tijd voor. Wat voor de Verenigde Staten geldt, geldt ook voor Europa. De moraal van het verhaal: wij, in Nederland, en in de Europese Unie zijn voortdurend aan het schaven en vijlen aan een Chinapolitiek, die is gebaseerd op het verminderen van de import, en dus de afhankelijkheid. Waar we niet bij stilstaan is wat er gebeurt als China wegvalt als exportbestemming. Hebben we daar een strategie voor? Martin is een ware Top Gun in Balanceren van Prioriteiten. De Serieuze Spotter plezieren. De Kenner behagen. De Standhouder tevreden houden. En vooral ook het klootjesvolk massaal doen toestromen, al kan dat geen Concorde van een Spitfire onderscheiden. Een kwaliteit die hij deelt met Ed de Bruijn die vele jaren lang de grootste vliegshow van Nederland programmeerde en ongelofelijke vliegtuigen naar Nederland haalde. Alsof dat nog niet genoeg is wist hij Texel te overspoelen met tienduizenden kijkers naar zijn Texel Airshow die zijn vliegveld en het eiland ver oversteeg. Wat te denken van Tom van der Meulen. Trotse tweede generatie bezitter en vlieger van Oostwold Airport. Hij haalde – bijna – een compleet squadron Warbirds naar dat kleine dorp in het mooie Groningen.Meesters zijn Ed, Tom en Martin in het bijeenbrengen van unieke vliegtuigen, in het bespelen van sponsoren en misschien wel het allerbelangrijkste: de Overheid te vriend houden, met haar eindeloze regels en voorschriften: Lokaal, Provinciaal en Landelijk. Martin Schoonderbeek weet hoe het moet. Tom laat zich niet kisten en Ed, die krijgt het voor elkaar. Maar het is wel uiterst gecompliceerd. Dat leggen ze uit aan Goof & Goot. En aan u, natuurlijk, als u tenminste wil luisteren!

Jake Lang has been to the Supreme Court before. That was last year, when he led the case that saw the justices knock out one of the key criminal charges the Biden Justice Department used against those at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Now Mr. Lang is back, asking the justices to revive another case of his — a lawsuit alleging police brutality on that fateful day. He spoke to 'Court Watch' host Alex Swoyer about his legal challenges.

Na publicatie van de Amerikaanse inflatiecijfers vorige week was de conclusie: de Amerikaanse Federal Reserve kan de rente weer gaan verlagen. Maar met die conclusie is macro-econoom Edin Mujagic het niet helemaal eens. ‘Blijkbaar is men vergeten – of doet het alsof – dat de doelstelling van de Fed nog steeds 2 procent per jaar is.’ Waarom wordt gezegd dat die weg nu openligt? De inflatie kwam uit op 3 procent, zowel bij de totale inflatie als bij de kerninflatie. Dat was een meevaller, want de verwachting lag op 3,1 procent. Blijkbaar heeft de markt heel weinig nodig om daar een optimistische draai aan te geven. Maar ik vind die conclusie vreemd. Als je doelstelling 2 procent inflatie per jaar is en je zit op 3 procent, dan is dat een aanzienlijke afwijking in de ongewenste richting wanneer we het over geldontwaarding hebben. How do you know what you know? Most of us have been confusing three fundamentally different forms of knowing our entire lives: instinct (the body's survival mechanism), intellect (the mind's analytical tool), and intuition (direct knowing that bypasses thought). Understanding the difference isn't just philosophical, it has immediate implications for every decision you make, from choosing a career path to knowing when to trust someone. On this week's episode of Musings From The Mount, Diana Lang joins the conversation and begins the discussions with an exploration about instinct, that primal gut-level response designed to keep us alive in the face of immediate physical danger and one problem becomes immediately apparent, our instincts haven't evolved as fast as our environment. Our bodies trigger the same fight-or-flight response for a difficult conversation that it would for a predator, which can then lead to chronic stress and reactive decisions. Learning when instinct serves you versus when it hijacks you has become an essential tool for navigating modern life without being ruled by ancient survival programming. We also examine the intellect, a powerful but limited tool. It can analyze, categorize, and problem-solve brilliantly, but it can only rearrange information it already has. The thinking mind is like a computer working with existing data; it cannot access anything genuinely new, so we explore how intellect can itself become a defense mechanism, keeping us in our heads to avoid feeling what is actually happening in our bodies or hearts. This is why breakthrough insights never come from more thinking, they arrive through intuition. Now that our team has successfully moved onto the Blue Area of the Moon, and their landlord Uatu, the Watcher, is examining the worst AirBNB contract of all time, what else should the Ant-tastic Four and the Future Foundation do. Sure, there is the upcoming mega-fight, and of course they need plan and build and program, but there is always time to relax. Let's start with Scott. Mr. Lang knows how to lean back and take a load off. He also knows how to make a mess. He really knows how to take a space and make it his own. In fact, I cannot get the jerk out of my house. Some people like to relax by reading. That is cool, and I respect that. Some people like to read old book. Awesome. I just do not get how some people can relax reading scrolls. That is not my bag, baby. I just cannot roll with that. Another way to relax is swimming with sharks. Again, that is some peoples pool, but it ain't mine. Of course, speaking of pools, relaxing in hot pools, spas, warm springs, etc. This is an excellent way to relax. It is much easier to do this if you do not have dragons crashing through walls or boys drilling holes to peep on them. Long walks and alone time is great. It would be even better if no one was around. But people are always around. I hate it when people are around. And there are those weirdo's that relax with other people. That is weird, and I do not understand it. But I like parties. So, there is that. I guess hanging out with a romantic partner in robes is a nice way to relax. I just would find it easier if I was not always thinking about murder. On this week's episode of The Modern Retail Podcast, co-hosts Gabriela Barkho and Melissa Daniels discuss Mammoth Brands' acquisition of Coterie, a luxury diaper brand that's had a fast-growing subscription business since 2021. While the terms of the deal are undisclosed, it's a big move for Mammoth whose portfolio up until now has included adult body care and grooming brands like Harry's, Flamingo and Lume. Then they unpack the news that Unilever is offloading luxury skincare brand Kate Somerville 10 years after its acquisition. It's now owned by Rare Beauty Brands, which also skincare brands Patchology and Dot Dot Dash. But it's another sign that Unilever is looking to simply its portfolio and get out of the luxury category, as Unilever also shuttered another brand in the category, Ren Clean Skincare, in July. This week's featured segment is an interview with James Lang, the vp of marketplace at Ulta Beauty (21:22). The company in October announced its first-ever third-party marketplace that's integrated into its website. The move is an attempt to grow e-commerce business without being saddled with inventory, but Lang explains how the company worked quickly and efficiently to stand up the operation within six months after announcing it in March. They discussed: How Ulta learned from other retailers' mistakes when building its marketplace.  How it plans to use third-party sellers as a way to jump on trend  The challenges and benefits of selling unowned inventory as a trusted legacy brand.
