Theo lịch trình dự kiến, sân bay quốc tế Long Thành sẽ được đưa vào hoạt động kể từ tháng 12 năm nay song song với sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất. Tuy nhiên, có nhiều yếu tố khiến dự án đầy tham vọng này của Việt Nam có nguy cơ bị chậm trễ. Kế hoạch chuyển các chuyến bay quốc tế từ Tân Sơn Nhất đến Long Thành đang đặt ra nhiều vấn đề, nhất là vì hệ thống giao thông kết nối hai sân bay vẫn chưa theo kịp. Dự án Cảng hàng không quốc tế Long Thành được xây dựng trên diện tích khoảng 5.000ha, có tổng mức đầu tư gần 16 tỷ đôla, với Tổng công ty Cảng hàng không Việt Nam (ACV) là chủ đầu tư dự án. Riêng giai đoạn 1 được thiết kế với công suất 25 triệu lượt hành khách và 1,2 triệu tấn hàng hóa mỗi năm. Mới đây, ông Nguyễn Đức Hùng, Quyền Tổng Giám đốc ACV đã cam kết với thủ tướng Lê Minh Hưng là sẽ hoàn thành toàn bộ dự án vào tháng 12/2026 và đưa sân bay này vào hoạt động. Tuy nhiên, trả lời RFI Việt ngữ ngày 03/07/2026, tiến sĩ Nguyễn Thiện Tống, nguyên Chủ nhiệm bộ môn Kỹ thuật hàng không Trường Đại học Văn Lang, cho rằng không cần xây dựng sân bay Long Thành một cách gấp rút như thế: "Tôi thấy là không hiểu sao mà phần lớn như là bị tự kỷ ám thị, tự mình tin  như vậy, rồi nói như vậy và cùng nhau nói như vậy, không ai nói ngược lại. Tức là tại sao Long Thành phải hoạt động vào năm 2026? Tại sao đặt những mốc thời gian như vậy, trong khi một công trình xây dựng đòi hỏi thời gian để nó có thể là hoàn tất, bảo đảm chất lượng hoạt động khi hoàn tất, chứ không phải đặt mức phải bắt đầu hoạt động, rồi thúc đẩy hoàn tất cho  kịp cái mốc đó. Thứ nhất là không bảo đảm được kết quả như là để tự nó theo đúng điều kiện khách quan để nó hoàn tất. Thứ hai là sẽ tốn kém. Thúc ép như vậy thì đưa đến chuyện là mọi việc đều  gấp rút, thời gian làm thêm ngoài giờ, làm thêm ban đêm tốn rất nhiều chi phí mà không cần thiết. Bởi vì có nhất thiết Long Thành phải hoạt động cuối năm 26 hay đầu năm 27 không? Chậm 1 năm, ngay cả chậm hơn nữa cũng chẳng sao cả. Người ta vịn vào một cái cớ rất là vô lý là sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất quá tải. Quá tải là gì? Quá tải là vượt quá sức hoạt động của nó. Thật sự quá tải chỉ xảy ra vào dịp Tết mà sân bay vẫn chịu đựng được. Tết vừa rồi có ngày tiếp nhận trên cả ngàn chuyến bay mà sân bay vẫn hoạt động. Cho nên không có một sự cấp bách gì mà phải đưa sân bay Long Thành vào hoạt động lấy cớ là vì Tân Sơn Nhất quá tải."  Theo báo chí trong nước, vào đầu tháng 7,  AVC đã đề xuất với chính phủ là thay vì chuyển toàn bộ hoạt động khai thác từ sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất sang Long Thành, hai sân bay sẽ được vận hành đồng thời theo phương án: Tân Sơn Nhất tiếp tục khai thác toàn bộ các đường bay nội địa cùng các đường bay quốc tế ngắn và trung bình, trong khi Long Thành “từng bước đảm nhận các đường bay quốc tế phù hợp nhằm phát huy công suất ngay từ giai đoạn đầu đưa vào khai thác”. Phương án này được xem là “nhằm khai thác tối đa năng lực của cả hai sân bay”. Cụ thể, trong giai đoạn đầu tiên (dự kiến từ 1/12/2026 – 27/3/2027), ACV đề xuất chuyển toàn bộ các chuyến bay quốc tế đường dài từ sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất sang sân bay Long Thành. Giai đoạn 2 (từ 28/3/2027 đến hết năm 2030), toàn bộ các chuyến bay quốc tế còn lại sẽ chuyển sang sân bay mới. Giai đoạn sau năm 2030 sẽ chuyển toàn bộ các chuyến bay quốc tế thường lệ sang khai thác tại sân bay Long Thành, còn Tân Sơn Nhất sẽ chủ yếu khai thác các chuyến bay nội địa. Ngày 30/06 vừa qua, ACV thông báo trong số các hãng nội địa, 3 hãng Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air và Vietravel Airlines đã chính thức đăng ký khai thác sân bay Long Thành. Đối với các hãng hàng không quốc tế, ACV trước đó cho biết đại diện 34 hãng "đã khảo sát thực địa và chuẩn bị cho việc khai thác sân bay Long Thành." Nhưng trong giới chuyên gia ở Việt Nam, không ít người quan ngại về tính khả thi của kế hoạch chuyển các chuyến bay quốc tế đến sân bay Long Thành. Trả lời Tạp chí Hàng không ngày 21/04/2026, ông Nguyễn Ngọc Luận, tổng giám đốc Công ty Cổ phần Kinh doanh khí miền Nam, cho rằng các hãng hàng không Việt Nam sẽ gặp nhiều khó khăn khi phải khai thác một phần các chuyến bay quốc tế tại sân bay Long Thành trong thời gian tới. Phương án khả dĩ hơn theo ông là trước mắt chỉ chuyển từ Tân Sơn Nhất về Long Thành các hãng hàng không nước ngoài có chặng đến và đi quốc tế (không khai thác quốc nội). Khách bay quốc tế các chặng này sẽ tự nối chuyến bằng xe hơi. Tuy nhiên phương án này lại chưa thuận tiện cho hành khách nối chuyến trong thời gian đầu do kết nối giao thông giữa hai sân bay chưa hoàn thiện.  Nếu hạ cánh tại sân bay Long Thành mà muốn đi tiếp quốc nội thì hành khách phải đón xe về Tân Sơn Nhất (mất có khi đến 2 tiếng), cho nên khách từ nhiều nước có có thể sẽ chọn bay với hãng khác (như Thai Airways hay Singapore Airlines) quá cảnh tại Bangkok/Singapore để từ đó bay thẳng đến các điểm du lịch của Việt Nam. Về phần tiến sĩ Nguyễn Thiện Tống, ông nêu bật những thiệt hại của kế hoạch chuyển các chuyến bay đến Long Thành quá sớm: "Đó là vấn đề rất quan trọng mà người ta không suy nghĩ đúng mức về mặt thiệt hại kinh tế xã hội nếu như cưỡng ép những chuyến bay đang có thể hoạt động tại Tân Sơn Nhất ra Long Thành. Tôi có thể nói bất cứ người khách nào hiện đang sử dụng Tân Sơn Nhất mà bị ép buộc phải ra Long Thành, thì chắc chắn họ không muốn. Bao giờ Tân Sơn Nhất quá tải, cái đó là do các hãng hàng không quyết định : Nếu họ thấy tìm thêm slot để mở chuyến bay không có, Tân Sơn Nhất hết chỗ rồi, thì họ sẽ mở slot mới bên sân bay mới và nếu có đủ khách họ mới mở chuyến bay đó. Tôi nghĩ việc thực hiện những chuyến bay ở Long Thành phải để cho tự nhiên xảy ra, chứ không phải bằng mệnh lệnh hành chánh, điều hành khách từ sân bay này sang sân bay khác. Việc quản lý các sân bay Việt Nam rất vô lý, tập trung thành một công ty gọi là Tổng công ty Hàng không Việt Nam ACV, một công ty quản lý và có quyền điều động mọi thứ với nhau, rất là vô lý. Đơn cử bên Úc, họ xây một sân bay thứ nhì của Sydney, câu hỏi đặt ra là ai quản lý sân bay thứ nhì đó? Người ta bảo ưu tiên cho sân bay thứ nhất, nếu muốn, họ quản lý luôn sân bay thứ nhì. Nhưng họ đã từ chối, chỉ quản lý sân bay Kingsford Smith thôi. Cho nên người ta mới thành lập một cơ quan quản lý sân bay Sydney thứ nhì. Có nghĩa hai sân bay độc lập, bổ sung cho nhau, nhưng cạnh tranh với nhau. Và như vậy các hãng máy bay cảm thấy sân bay mới có thuận lợi gì thì họ đăng ký sử dụng sân bay đó. Sân bay Long Thành hiện nay cũng thông báo có nhiều hãng máy đăng ký để sử dụng. Nếu đó là đăng ký một tự nguyện thì tốt và nếu thời gian hoạt động mà có lợi người ta sẽ tăng dần cái chuyến bay tại Long Thành. Còn nếu không có lợi thì số lượng hành khách Long Thành sẽ ít và tôi nghĩ, nếu hay thì nó sẽ tăng từ từ một cách tự nhiên. Với tinh thần đó thì không có gì phải gấp rút. Hiện nay tôi thấy nó vô lý ở chỗ là có vẻ họ vẫn dùng mệnh lệnh nhà nước của thời kỳ mấy chục năm trước. Tôi cho rằng bắt buộc toàn bộ hay phần lớn các chuyến bay quốc tế dời ra Long Thành sẽ gây thiệt hại cho hãng hàng không và gây thiệt hại cho hành khách tại sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất, gây thiệt hại cho nền kinh tế." Ngoài ra theo trang mạng The Traveler trong bài viết đăng ngày 23/06/2026, các chuyên gia theo dõi ngành hàng không Việt Nam nhận định “tiến độ dự án Long Thành hiện rất sít sao, hầu như không còn biên độ dự phòng cho các sự cố do thời tiết, tắc nghẽn nguồn cung,  hay thay đổi thiết kế. Dù tiến độ thi công thường được báo cáo dưới dạng phần trăm hoàn thành, giới quan sát cảnh báo rằng những hạng mục phức tạp nhất – bao gồm hoàn thiện nội thất, tích hợp hệ thống và chứng nhận an toàn – vẫn còn ở phía trước và thường tiềm ẩn rủi ro chậm trễ cao hơn.” Cũng theo The Traveler, "những lo ngại về nguy cơ chậm tiến độ càng gia tăng do các thách thức về chi phí và công tác đấu thầu (... ). Mặc dù các cơ quan chức năng liên tục khẳng định quyết tâm hoàn thành dự án vào mốc thời gian năm 2026, nhưng ngân sách hạn hẹp cùng các thỏa thuận hợp đồng phức tạp làm tăng khả năng xảy ra tranh chấp, thay đổi thiết kế hoặc các yêu cầu phát sinh; những yếu tố này có thể gây chậm trễ cho một số hạng mục quan trọng của dự án."  Số vốn đầu tư lên đến 16  tỷ đôla cho sân bay Long Thành cũng đã bị chỉ trích và ngay chính tổng bí thư Tô Lâm cũng đã nêu vấn đề này trong một bài phát biểu tại một hội nghị ngày 25/02/2026: “Nếu quy mô 16 tỷ đôla thì kinh khủng. Nhưng tôi hỏi có vượt trội hơn được Malaysia và Singapore thì không chứng minh được. Tôi hỏi bao lâu thu hồi được vốn cho nhà nước cũng không trả lời được. Tôi hỏi sân bay Long Thành này mỗi năm đóng góp cho tăng trưởng kinh tế là bao nhiêu cũng không tính toán được.”  Theo ông Tô Lâm, chính vì vậy dự án này dễ "nảy sinh ra lãng phí, tiêu cực, thậm chí thất thoát". Theo trang mạng The Traveler, công tác phòng chống tham nhũng cũng làm phức tạp thêm cho dự án. Các biện pháp kiểm soát chặt chẽ hơn có thể làm chậm quá trình ra quyết định hoặc phê duyệt do phải rà soát lại hồ sơ, đặc biệt là đối với các hạng mục thay đổi hoặc phát sinh thường xuất hiện ở giai đoạn sau của quá trình thi công.  The Traveler cũng ghi nhận hạ tầng kết nối giao thông chưa bắt kịp tiến độ của sân bay mới. Ngay cả khi các hạng mục cốt lõi của sân bay hoàn thành đúng hạn, vẫn còn đó những câu hỏi về khả năng tiếp cận sân bay Long Thành từ TP Hồ Chí Minh và các tỉnh lân cận. Nếu hạ tầng giao thông mặt đất không hoàn thiện kịp thời, những hành khách đầu tiên sử dụng sân bay Long Thành có thể phải đối mặt với thời gian di chuyển dài và khó lường, làm giảm đi lợi thế về sự thuận tiện mà sân bay này hứa hẹn mang lại. Về phần mình, ông Nguyễn Thiện Tống cũng nhấn mạnh đến những bất cập về kết nối giao thông với sân bay Long Thành: "Ngay cả kết nối tốt, nghĩa là có các đường cao tốc, có metro kết nối tốt, thì vẫn là tốn thời gian nếu như xét từ Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, tạo ra sự bất lợi cho hàng không. Vì khoảng đường xa mà hiện nay kết nối không đầy đủ thì nguy cơ kẹt xe, nguy cơ chậm chuyến bay rất là cao. Không ai bảo đảm được giờ chính xác để đi ra sân bay, cũng như đi về. Đi trễ thì máy bay bay mất mà những hành khách bị kẹt xe và sẽ bị thiệt hại rất lớn. Nguy cơ kết nối không tốt làm cho hành khách không sử dụng sân bay có thể đưa đến viễn cảnh sân bay xây dựng hoành tráng mà trở thành lãng phí. Làm metro mà đến năm 2030 mới được hoạt động được, thế thì 3 năm không có phương tiện kết nối metro thì làm sao mà Long Thành thuận lợi được. Đường bộ thì bây giờ mới bắt đầu mở rộng và tốn rất nhiều tiền nhưng không chắc bảo đảm rằng thời gian đi ra Long Thành là vừa phải để không bị trễ chuyến bay. Không lo trước kết nối là sai lầm rất lớn khi xây sân bay Long Thành. Và bây giờ đã lỡ như vậy rồi thì càng không nên thúc hối sân bay Long Thành quá nhanh. Nếu mà chậm sân bay Long Thành chừng nào thì kết nối sẽ được thời gian để mà hoàn thiện, để phát triển nhanh lên chừng đó. Hiện nay việc kết nối chưa đầy đủ, tiến độ xây dựng không kịp thời mà thúc hối nhanh là một chuyện rất không hợp lý. Rồi xây nhà ga rất là lớn, diện tích quá nhiều. Chưa hết: kế hoạch ban đầu xây một đường băng thôi lại thúc hối để chính phủ ra quyết định làm thêm đường băng thứ nhì nữa là rất là lãng phí. Nói rằng dự phòng nếu trục trặc đường băng thứ nhất thì sử dụng đường băng thứ nhì. Rất là sai. Bởi vì nếu có trục trặc gì trong vấn đề cất cánh thì máy bay nằm đó chờ hoặc hủy chuyến bay. Còn hạ cánh có thể hạ cánh sân bay gần nhất là Tân Sơn Nhất. Không cần phải xây dựng đường băng mà lãng phí. Rất là lạ lùng. Phải nói là từ đầu thiết kế một sân bay hoành tráng quy mô lớn như vậy mà không tính toán, để rồi nửa chừng thi công giai đoạn 1 lại bổ sung làm thêm đường băng thứ nhì, quyết định một cách tôi cho rằng rất là cẩu thả, rất là lãng phí." Về hệ thống giao thông kết nối Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh với sân bay Long Thành, ngày 30/06 vừa qua, thành phố Đồng Nai đã khởi công xây dựng hai tuyến đường là Đường vành đai 4 dài hơn 46 km và Đại lộ Nguyễn Hữu Cảnh dài 15,5 km. Nhưng hiện chưa biết khi nào những công trình này sẽ hoàn thành. Về metro thì chính quyền TP Hồ Chí Minh đã công bố kế hoạch khởi công tuyến Thủ Thiêm - Sân bay Long Thành trước ngày 02/09, dự kiến đến năm 2030 sẽ hoàn thành. Nhưng ai cũng biết dự án metro rất phức tạp, khó mà bảo đảm tiến độ đề ra.  Trước mắt, trục lộ duy nhất đi từ TP Hồ Chí Minh đến sân bay là cao tốc TP Hồ Chí Minh - Long Thành - Dầu Giây vẫn thường xuyên bị kẹt xe nghiêm trọng. Hiện giờ đoạn từ TP Hồ Chí Minh đến Long Thành đang được mở rộng. Để giảm bớt sự phụ thuộc độc đạo vào trục cao tốc TP.HCM - Long Thành - Dầu Giây, mạng lưới hạ tầng kết nối xung quanh sân bay cũng đang được các địa phương gấp rút xây dựng, cụ thể là 2 tuyến đường dẫn kết nối trực tiếp T1 và T2 (dài hơn 11 km nối từ QL51 vào đến trung tâm nhà ga sân bay).

Hello Interactors,Welcome to summer where Interplace turns its attention to physical geography and the environment. It's already a crazy El Niño — thanks in large part to global warming — and the United States is having a big birthday. How might these be related and what to do about it?What follows is not a celebration or a condemnation, but more of a reckoning. I look at what was built, what was deliberately forgotten, and what is now continually arriving, season by season, in forms of weather the founders could not have imagined.Although Alexander Humboldt — one of the world's most famous scientists at the time — did warn Jefferson of the effects of human-induced climate change in 1804. He based his prediction on changes he observed in forests and water systems as a result of mono-crops and industrial “steam and gas”. Jefferson ignored him.BUILDING, BURNING, BILLOWING BACKOn this momentous 250th Fourth of July, when the world is experiencing record level extreme weather events, let's reflect on how over the last 250 years the United States helped build, extract, and then burn the material and political conditions that made climate change possible. From the beginning, it tied itself to land, extraction, mobility, and expansion. Over time those commitments became an energy system built on coal, oil, gas, highways, suburbs, industrial agriculture, and a development model that treated nature as an inexhaustible storehouse. That legacy is now legible in the atmosphere itself. Let's light a Roman Candle in celebration!Even before the 4th of July fireworks celebrations create another nationwide 42% average increase in fine particulate matter (Seidel, et al., 2015), the United States bears the single largest share of cumulative historical CO₂ emissions of any nation . We represent roughly 20 percent of the global total since 1850 contributing approximately 0.2°C of warming to date (Carbon Brief, 2021; UNEP, 2023). To represent four percent of the world's current population and be responsible for nearly a fifth of its cumulative warming is not a coincidence of geography or fake news. It is the outcome of deliberate choices about how a republic would be organized, energized, and expanded across two and a half centuries.The United States has long imagined freedom in spatial terms: movement, property, settlement, mastery, frontier, and circulation. Those abstract ideals were made real through land theft and remade landscapes, as well as through infrastructure built in significant part by African and African American enslaved labor. Each step along the way depended on ever-greater throughput of energy, labor, and material. In that sense, the country's history is also a history of how thought became organized around extraction and exploitation, until those thoughts and actions themselves became a kind of common sense. But by the late nineteenth century and early twentieth centuries increased industrialization meant emissions grew. They surged during the postwar era and peaked in the early 2000s — a trajectory that maps almost exactly onto the spatial project of suburban expansion, highway construction, and fossil-fuel-dependent agriculture (Climate Change Tracker, 2024). Two-thirds of the country's cumulative warming impact derives from fossil CO₂ alone. The built environment of American freedom is as inseparable from the chemical footprint it left behind as a firecracker's scattered debris and carbon residue.This leaves us with a climate crisis that is not just the result of a few bad policy choices in the late twentieth century. We exist in a cumulative outcome of a long national project that normalized combustion as prosperity and treated atmospheric consequence as some distant abstraction. Kind of like turning up the radio to drowned out the sound of your car making a funny noise. The federal state government played a central role in this process. Not only through direct policy and subsidies, but through the development of roads, ports, power systems, agricultural regimes, and military logistics that expanded the scale of fossil dependence at every scale of national life.The fossil fuel industry understood this trajectory earlier than the public was permitted to know. A systematic analysis published in Science found that ExxonMobil's own scientists accurately projected and skillfully modeled global warming due to fossil fuel burning from as early as 1977. These projections are consistent with subsequent observations. And yet, for decades, the company publicly pushed doubt and denial (Supran, Rahmstorf, & Oreskes, 2023). Consequently, what America projects as “economic growth”, fueled enormously by the fossil fuel industry, is embedded not only in a collective national memory but in the scientific record.The irony is that America's confidence in its own permanence rested on a false sense of geography. The landscape seemed stable because the costs were displaced in the form of upstream mining, downstream pollution, hidden emissions, imported and exported harm, and deferred climate effects. The effects on the atmosphere made that displacement impossible to sustain. The ‘progress' that had been scattered across space and time returns as heat, drought, fire, flood, and increasingly volatile weather. We built a world in which the rewards of extraction were immediate while the penalties were delayed. Call it what you will — the climate crisis is just the debt of delay, dressed as disaster.KNOWING, NEGLECTING, NEUTERING KNOWLEDGEThe USA did not simply keep burning and expanding on autopilot. By the late twentieth century, it had also begun to lose the institutional capacity to understand what its own trajectory meant. The problem was no longer that the 1970's scientific picture Exxon had already portrayed was absent. The evidence was clear. By the early 1990s the United States had ratified the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and formally accepted the goal of returning greenhouse-gas emissions to 1990 levels by the end of the decade.The barrier to progress was not ignorance, but a degraded relationship between knowledge and power. This was engineered in part by more fossil fuel industry campaigns to sow doubt about science it privately accepted. Historians of science Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway documented how a loose-knit network of industry-connected scientists ran effective campaigns to mislead the public on issues from tobacco to climate change. They exploited the media's tendency toward false balance and keeping controversy alive long after scientific consensus had been reached (Oreskes & Conway, 2010). The strategy was to make certainty seem uncertain, and it worked. For decades, political inaction persisted through every window of action that may have helped.By the mid-1990s, climate change had become legible enough for federal institutions to name, study, and plan around, but the machinery of governance was being bent in the opposite direction. Newt Gingrich and the Republicans who rose with him may not have invented anti-government politics, but they weaponized it. Curiously, through pro-governmental politics. While their rhetoric promised efficiency and modernization, in practice it often meant cutting staffs, weakening committees, abolishing subcommittees, and treating the legislature less as a site of deliberation than as a theater of permanent combat. After all, their own staffers affectionately referred to Gingrich and his wrecking crew as ‘jihadists' — even as those same politicians promulgated and attached that term as a slur toward Muslims. One of the most consequential acts of this period was the 1995 defunding of the Office of Technology Assessment. This was a bipartisan, independent body that had produced over 750 reports on complex scientific and technical questions since 1974, including major studies on energy policy, environmental risk, and the long-range consequences of atmospheric change. Gingrich had vowed to kill the OTA during his 1994 election campaign. He kept his promise, and with it eliminated one of Congress's primary mechanisms for converting scientific knowledge into durable legislative capacity (Wikipedia, Office of Technology Assessment; AAAS Science, 2019).A legislature cannot respond intelligently to a long-range atmospheric crisis if it has stripped away the very mechanisms designed to synthesize evidence, test assumptions, and tackle complex questions over time. What replaced deliberations mediated by experts was a vacuum quickly filled by industry lobbyists — the same industry that, amongst themselves, knew exactly what Gingrich was doing. Research on institutional dynamics in climate governance consistently finds that fragmented policy, weak intergovernmental coordination, and the erosion of technical capacity are among the most significant barriers to effective long-range climate action (Jaisridhar et al., 2025; Birchall, Bonnett, & Kehler, 2023).The thinning of Congress's own cognitive infrastructure in 1995 was a bureaucratic adjustment that disabled the country's capacity to govern on topics beyond the timescales and dimensions of a single administration. The political system was becoming less capable of converting recognition into sustained action precisely as the need for that conversion became most urgent. The United States not only helped create the conditions for warming but undermined its own capacity to govern the effects warming created. The atmosphere was warming and so was the willful weakening of the world's most powerful potential partner in planetary protection.CASCADES, CRISES, AND COMING TO TERMSWhat follows is not simply a warmer world, but a less legible and actionable one. Once a political system weakens its own capacity to think long-term, it becomes ill-equipped to face a future that arrives not as a single rupture but as a cascade of self-reinforcing disruptions. We've all experienced or read about hotter summers, fire, more erratic rainfall, stressed coasts, shifting storm tracks, and weather that no longer behaves as the old seasonal calendar once did. Anthropogenic warming is already increasing variability in frequency and severity of weather systems. This in turn can alter local precipitation variability, storm behavior, and the climatic conditions on which seasonal expectations have long depended (Robinson, 2021; Wang et al., 2017; Scher & Messori, 2019). In several regions, climate change is expected not only to shift average conditions but to change seasonal predictability itself — especially for rainfall — making the future harder to read through the calendars and risk assumptions modeled and built from the past (Le et al., 2023; Delsole et al., 2014).Even now, the atmosphere offers a live demonstration of this instability. On June 11, 2026, NOAA officially declared that El Niño has arrived — with a 63 percent probability of reaching “very strong” intensity, defined as sea surface temperature anomalies of at least +2°C in the equatorial Pacific. This would rank it among the largest events in the historical record (NOAA, 2026). What makes 2026 categorically different from prior super events is not just its projected intensity but its baseline. This El Niño begins from the warmest ocean temperatures in human history, layered onto anthropogenic warming that has already pushed the planet to 1.55°C above preindustrial levels.As one paper argued in April, the El Niño is the accelerant; the fuel was already stacked (Hansen et al., 2026). The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has placed an 86 percent probability on at least one year between 2026 and 2030 surpassing 2024 as the warmest on record, with 2027 — when El Niño's thermal lag typically produces its most extreme global signals — as the most likely candidate (WMO, 2026).When that variability is layered onto long-term warming, the result is not just discomfort but a deeper erosion of climatic predictability. ENSO — the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, the coupled ocean-atmosphere system that drives El Niño's periodic warming and its counterpart La Niña's cooling across the tropical Pacific — is not a new phenomenon, but its behavior is changing. Model evidence indicates that ENSO-related rainfall variability is likely to intensify and shift eastward under greenhouse warming, creating more severe and sometimes novel climate conditions across the terrestrial tropics (Cai et al., 2021; Rifai, Li, & Malhi, 2019). The question is no longer whether the climate will change, but how many of the social and political structures built on climatic regularity can survive that change.Climate change is often presented as a technical or environmental problem to be solved. Especially amidst a culture of pervasive techno-optimism. But climate change is way more fundamental than this. It's a reordering of the relationship between how we need to think and the geography in which we exist. This includes political geography and a reordering of political imagination as it relates to physical geography. The old originally envisioned republic of the USA assumed that land could be mastered, seasons could be predicted, and institutions could absorb shock without losing coherence. Those assumptions no longer hold.The old assumption that infrastructure could be planned around stationary baselines is increasingly at odds with the evidence. We can already see how energy systems show measurable vulnerability to climatic uncertainty and extremes. Modeled systems evidence declines in reliability and large performance gaps when future weather variation is not adequately incorporated into planning (Perera et al., 2020; Ouyang et al., 2023).As a result, the challenge ahead is not adaptation to these changes in the narrow sense, but reconstruction of our relationship to them in the broad sense. This may seem impossible in today's American political system, but truly Democratic societies will need stronger scientific institutions, more durable legislative capacity, and trustworthy public agencies able to interpret risk before disaster becomes routine. They will need not only infrastructure, but intelligence. Embodied intelligence — embodied engagement with physical and social environments rather than as a purely singular-brain augmented by LLM computation. This includes a renewed ability to gather, preserve, and act on knowledge over long horizons.The literature on adaptation governance is clear that resilience depends on organizational learning, intergovernmental collaboration, inclusive planning, and long-term institutional capacity. Short-term, reactive, market or donor-driven interventions that respond to emergencies without building the durable frameworks that prevent them won't work (Birchall et al., 2026; Rahman & Islam, 2024). What this means practically is the reconstitution of the kind of congressional expertise that was dismantled in 1995. We need not merely revive the OTA but to imagine a broader democratic intelligence infrastructure capable of thinking on the timescales that climate change demands — decades, generations, and centuries. Without that, climate change will continue to be experienced as a succession of emergency, political, or market conditions rather than as a governable transformation.We can do this. After all, a country that once imagined itself through movement, expansion, and mastery made a certain kind of freedom seem natural. A new kind of freedom can be made to seem natural too. But right now our current system returns prosperity for many — but heat, flood, instability, and constraint for all. What was built now must be lived within — good and bad — while what was extracted must now live in the atmosphere — all bad. What gets burned today, will burn more later. The political order that was built through extraction, combustion, and territorial expansion must confront the atmospheric and hydrological consequences of those choices.That confrontation will only intensify. Past century's cumulative emissions have already committed the planet to changes that will outlast any government, living generation, or institution that exists. Including you and me. The next 250 years will belong less to societies that imagine escape than to those that can build the institutional intelligence, infrastructural redundancy, and long-term public capacity required to inhabit a less legible and hospitable climate (Ouyang et al., 2023; Jaisridhar et al., 2025).So, as you watch the rocket's red glare and bombs bursting in air — sending even more smoke, chemicals and debris everywhere — know the flag will still be there. Suddenly, his wife and kids turn to dust and he has no idea why. 23 days later, Tony Stark & Nebula are stuck in space together. She's helping him heal. They're about to run out of oxygen when Captain Marvel shows up to save them. She brings them back to Earth where they're reunited with Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Rhodey & Rocket. The happy reunion doesn't last long. Tony does one of his famous freak outs, saying things he will most certainly regret. Captain Marvel gets the rundown & decides she's going to go kill Thanos herself. Everyone is like this witch shows up out of nowhere and now wants to be the hero, but Thor likes her and says we should go. So they track Thanos down. He's like oh hi. I destroyed the stones. My bad. So Thor cuts his head off. Fast forward 5 years and Scott randomly pops out of the quantum realm machine, very confused. So he goes to talk to the Avengers about his experience. He tells Cap & Natasha about how for him, the 5 years was only 5 minutes. Maybe there's some way to use the quantum realm to go back in time and stop Thanos. Only one guy is smart enough to help - Tony. But now Tony has a daughter & he's not interested in helping. But Tony can't forget about it. He pokes around and figures out how it could work. Scott, Cap, and Natasha turn to the next smartest guy they know - Bruce. He agrees to help and they do some experiments but nothing overly helpful. Tony shows up with a time traveling device and says it's time to get the band back together. They do some testing and find out they can go to the past and bring something back without changing anything. So they have a plan - team up and go get the stones and bring them to the present which would prevent Thanos from being able to do his thing. Banner, Lang, Rogers, and Stark travel back to New York during Loki's 2012 invasion. At the Sanctum Sanctorum, Banner persuades the Ancient One to hand over the Time Stone by promising that all of the Infinity Stones will eventually be returned to their rightful places in time. Plus, Doctor Strange gave it up willingly in his time which is good enough for the Ancient One. Meanwhile, at Stark Tower, Rogers successfully recovers the Mind Stone from Hydra agents posing as S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives. However, Stark and Lang's plan to steal the Space Stone goes wrong, allowing Loki to escape with it. To recover from the setback, Rogers and Stark travel further back to 1970, where Stark obtains an earlier version of the Space Stone and unexpectedly gets the chance to speak with his father. Rogers steals additional Pym Particles needed for their return trip and catches a glimpse of his lost love, Peggy Carter. Meanwhile, Thor and Rocket journey to Asgard in 2013. Rocket extracts the Reality Stone from Jane Foster, while Thor reunites with his mother, Frigga, who snaps him out of his funk and gets his swag and his hammer back. In 2014, Nebula and Rhodey travel to Morag and secure the Power Stone before Peter Quill can retrieve it. Hawkeye and Black Widow head to Vormir, where Red Skull explains that the Soul Stone can only be obtained through the sacrifice of someone you love. Romanoff gives her life so Barton can claim the Stone. As Rhodes and Nebula prepare to return to the present, Nebula's cybernetic implants connect with those of her past self. This allows the 2014 version of Thanos to learn about his future defeat and the Avengers' plan to reverse it. Thanos captures Nebula and sends her 2014 counterpart into the future to infiltrate the Avengers and pave the way for his arrival. So they all return back in the present with the stones, sans Natasha. They put the stones on an iron glove and Bruce agrees that he's probably the best dude for the job. He snaps and immediately collapses. Hawkeye immediately gets a phone call from his wife. It worked!!! But the happiness doesn't last long because 2014 Gamora used the Time Machine to get 2014 Thanos to show up and shoot the Avengers compound up big time. He's like thanks for getting all of the stones together for me. It's giant fight time, folks. And it's not looking great for the Avengers despite the fact that Thor's hammer saw Cap as worthy enough to use it. But just when it's looking bleak, Doctor Strange returns by opening portals for the rest of the Avengers to show up and join the battle. Avengers assemble and IT'S AWESOME! It's a tough battle and Scott is busy getting his van Time Machine up and running since Thanos destroyed the other one so that they can return the stones. Captain Marvel shows up last minute and it's looking like they might do it but Thanos makes the van explode. Thanos gets the gauntlet back but Captain Marvel stops him from snapping his fingers. He's able to free himself. It's looking like a lost cause but Tony looks over at Strange who holds up 1 finger, showing Tony that this is the 1 in 14 million chances they win. Tony is able to get the stones and snap his fingers and make Thanos and his baddies disappear. But unfortunately the blast was too much for Tony and he dies. At Tony's funeral, all the Avengers show up to show their respects. They create a new Time Machine and Captain America goes to return all of the stones to their proper time. But he doesn't return to present day. Well, he does but he's old. He decided to stay in 1970 and grow old with Peggy Carter. Steve gives Sam his shield. We have a new Captain America now. Today we are revisiting a tragic case of negligence which originally captivated us back in 2024.  When Marie and Pierre Curie discovered radium in 1898, the chemical element was quickly adopted by manufacturers for its luminescent properties that would go on to be used in, among other things, the painting of clock faces, watches, and instrument panels, allowing them to be seen in the dark. At the time, the introduction of radioluminescent materials into manufacturing was hailed as a scientific solution to an age-old frustration, but it didn't take long before that solution was shown to have terrible consequences. As a radioactive element, radium is highly toxic to humans, particularly when ingested or inhaled. While it seemed unlikely that anyone would ingest or inhale the radium used to paint a clockface, this fact posed a serious problem for the largely female factory workers whose job it was to paint the dials. These “Radium Girls,” as they would come to be known, not only spent most of their day in close proximity to the paint, but also employed a technique in which they frequently wet their paintbrushes with their mouths, consuming small amounts of radium in the process. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, hundreds of young women working in at least three radium dial factories in the United States suffered deadly radiation poisoning as a result of working so closely with radium, all without any safety protocols and completely unaware of the dangers. After dozens of deaths, a group of factory workers successfully sued their employers for damages, exposing the widespread disregard for worker safety. While the suits were generally a major victory for the American labor movement, it was ultimately hard-won and little comfort to those who would die within a few years. On October 30, 1975, fifteen-year-old Martha Moxley failed to return home after a night out with friends in Belle Haven, an exclusive wealthy enclave in Greenwich, CT. On October 30, 1975, fifteen-year-old Martha Moxley failed to return home after a night out with friends in Belle Haven, an exclusive wealthy enclave in Greenwich, CT. The following morning, Moxley's badly beaten body was discovered underneath a tree, just a few hundred feet from her house, triggering one of the most notorious murder mysteries in the state's history.
