In the first episode of our annual Tales of Horror series, we dive into John Landis's iconic 1981 horror-comedy, “An American Werewolf in London.” Join us as we explore how this groundbreaking film stitched together raucous humor, visceral horror, and mournful tragedy to redefine the modern werewolf myth. We breakdown the chemistry between stars David Naughton and Jenny Agutter, the unforgettable performances of Griffin Dunne and John Woodvine, and the practical mastery of makeup artist Rick Baker that earned the movie its legendary status. From the youths' fateful trek across the English moor to transformation scenes that remain some of cinema's most grotesquely luminous moments, we discuss how Landis balances scares with sympathy, humor with heartbreak, and fate with humanity. We also examine the film's production history, its influence on later horror-comedy, and the enduring legacy of its creature design. Whether you're a long-time fan or discovering the film for the first time, this episode unpacks why An American Werewolf in London continues to haunt and delight audiences decades later.Where To Watch An American Werewolf in London

Darren Aronofsky follows up his divisive Oscar-winner, The Whale, with a throwback to 90s capers. Caught Stealing is an After Hours pastiche without any ego and a studio potboiler aimed right down the middle of the road, it just happens to star one of the most charismatic casts assembled in 2025. Jeff and Derek discuss the star power of Austin Butler, the few surprises the film has in store, and this strange departure from Aronofsky's typical auteurism. Tune in!

Acclaimed Oscar-nominated director Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, The Whale, The Wrestler) returns to the big screen with what MIGHT be his most audience-friendly caper yet....this is the story of a burned-out ex-baseball player named Hank (Oscar-nominee Austin Butler) who unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous struggle for survival of late '90's New York City.  Upon doing his neighbor Russ (Matt Smith) a favorite while he goes out of town, Hank soon has various unsavory characters who come calling....and the only people who can apparently help him are his long-suffering girlfriend/medic Yvonne (Zoe Kravitz) and NYPD Detective Roman (Oscar-Winner Regina King) who's on the case.  Also along for the ride during this increasingly violent crime comedy/drama are Griffin Dunne, Bad Bunny, Action Bronson, Carol Kane, Liev Schreiber, and Vincent D'Onofrio. Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Hope Hopkinson talks to director Darren Aronofsky about his new film, Caught Stealing.  Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) was a high-school baseball phenom who can't play anymore, but everything else is going okay. He's got a great girl (Zoë Kravitz), tends bar at a New York dive, and his favorite team is making an underdog run at the pennant. When his punk-rock neighbor Russ (Matt Smith) asks him to take care of his cat for a few days, Hank suddenly finds himself caught in the middle of a motley crew of threatening gangsters. They all want a piece of him; the problem is he has no idea why. As Hank attempts to evade their ever-tightening grip, he's got to use all his hustle to stay alive long enough to find out… Caught Stealing is directed by Academy Award® nominee Darren Aronofsky, screenplay by Charlie Huston, based on his book of the same name. The film stars Austin Butler, Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D'Onofrio, Griffin Dunne, Benito A Martínez Ocasio, and Carol Kane. With a roster of clients that included everyone from Robert DeNiro, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Danny Devito and many, many more, Matthew was brought up in and around the film business and had a firsthand look. Part memoir, part biography, part cultural history & part fiction, The Golden Hour has been priases in outlets such as NPR, the New York Times, the Kirkus Review, the LA Times and many more for it's unique look into Hollywood and the battle between art vs. commerce and much more. As this is his third book based on his take on Hollywood, Matthew is getting name-checked alongside iconic LA based, Hollywood centric authors such as Joan Didion and William Goldman and getting praise from authors like Jonathan Lethem and Griffin Dunne. High praise indeed. We get into that as well as how Matthew formed the book and the basis of his exploration into his family and the city formed him, shortly. Matthew's behind-the-scenes stories of how Hollywood was created in the second half of the twentieth century at Tinseltown institutions like MCA, William Morris and CAA beginning in the 1950s and where we are today, 70 years later a a large part of this episode. But we also hear personal stories about pranks the pre-rat pack played on him and his best friend Renee Estevez (daughter of Martin Sheen) in high school, what LA restaurants his family ate on special occasions, the cars and vanity plates of super agents in the City of Angelss and the movie theaters and books that shaped his youth on the Westside of Los Angeles. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and if you've never had David Lynch tell you, you were more an artist than a deal maker at 13, take a listen because Matthew Specktor has. Everyone has a story.

Griffin Dunne has balanced acting, directing, and producing for over 40 years in this business. “Chilly Scenes of Winter,” “An American Werewolf in London,” “After Hours,” “Practical Magic,” “This is Us,” to name just a small handful of his credits. For his latest, “Ex-Husbands,” he delivers a performance revelatory in its ease, miraculously blending lightness and dread. It's so much fun, and even inspirational, to simply watch him walk around as this character, carrying this load. Hopefully, this is the start of a new chapter: Dunne as the contemplative man of a certain age who has seen it all. On this episode, he shares his favorite piece of direction, talks about how producing affected his acting work, tells the story of discovering he's a Chekhovian actor, explains why it all comes down to listening and being in the moment, and much more. In this episode, Host Mary Donohue talks to Griffin Dunne, actor, producer and director and now New York Times best-selling author about his family memoir The Friday Afternoon Club. His Hartford to Hollywood family includes generations of writers, movie producers, journalists, and actors including his father Dominick Dunne, uncle John Gregory Dunne, and aunt Joan Didion.   This prominent family dynasty has part of its roots in Irish-American Connecticut, coming from Ireland to Derby and Hartford. Irish Catholics, unwelcome in Protestant Connecticut from the jump in the 1820s, nevertheless made Connecticut  home. In this episode, Dunne shares stories about family figures such as Hartford's Dominick Burns, a self-made man who immigrated from Ireland at age 11 and became a business owner and bank president. And Dr. Edwin Dunne, a Harvard-trained surgeon, who was the grandson of an Irish immigrant and the son of a machinist at the Farrell Foundry and Machine Company in Ansonia. And we don't forget the Hollywood part of the story either with Dunne's vivid memories of his father's life as a movie producer and crime journalist!   Our thanks again to Griffin Dunne for joining us for this episode. His book is available at your favorite bookstore or on Amazon.   The new Hartford Public Library Park Street at the Lyric Branch is located at 603 Park Street. The building that housed the Park Street Trust Company where Dominick Burns served as co-founder and president is located at 617 Park Street, on the southwest corner of Park and Broad Streets.   The grave monument company that is mentioned is Beij, Williams and Zito-still in business. John Zito, Jr. was a sculptor as well as a partner in the cemetery monument company. Their website is here: https://fineartstone.com/companyhistory/   If you want to learn more about Connecticut's Irish-American history and landmarks, go to the website of the Connecticut Irish-American Historical Society here: http://www.ctirishhistory.org/website/publish/about/index.php?About-Us-2   ------------------------------------------------ To celebrate reaching 200 episodes, we're asking listeners to donate $20 a month or $200 annually to help us continue to bring you new episodes every two weeks.
