The Delphian Podcast

Our guest on this episode of the Delphian Podcast is Claus Busch Risvig, he is a Danish collector who, with his partner, created the Bech Risvig Collection. He is also on the advisory board & panel at Plop Residency and Head of Gallery Relations at Artland. We speak to him about how he got started collecting, where he looks for art, and his particular interest in emerging artists. He also gives some tips for both young collectors and artists just starting out as well as what artists can do to make themselves more discoverable to collectors.  

Joining us on the Delphian Podcast for this episode is Madi, a French artist known for her complex layered works that involve imaginary characters, textures, sensations, dreams, and fantasies. We talk to her about her work, her need to create, and collaborations, from working with big brands to Michellin starred chefs. We also discuss artist collaborations and the pressures of social media. 

Our guest on the Delphian Podcast for this episode is longtime friend and Delphian collaborator Wingshan Smith. Wingshan is an artist, curator, and educator based in Nottingham and Hong Kong. She is Youth Programmer at Nottingham Contemporary as well as having her own practice in performance-based art. We discuss the role of art in the community and striking a balance between working in curation and personal practice. We also talk about the importance of looking at networking in a different way, not as a chore, but as a genuine way of meeting friends and building a community. 

On this episode of the Delphian Podcast, we talk to arts writer and critic Tabish Khan. Tabish is the arts writer for Londonist, has a regular column on FAD Magazine among many others, and is also one of the judges for the 2020 Delphian Open Call. We chat with him about his unlikely beginnings in the art world, how he has been coping during the lockdown, and his views on art speak and press releases. He also gives us his top tips for artists approaching critics and writers! 

In this episode of the Delphian Podcast we speak to the collector and curator Oliver Elst. He is the founder of the Cuperior Collection, which is a collection of works by some of the most exciting emerging and early-career African artists. We discuss how he got into collecting, the rise of online exhibitions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how this affects the way in which collectors purchase. He also gives us his tips for budding collectors, and tips for artists to get their work noticed. 

In this second special edition episode of the Delphian Podcast, Delphian director Nick JS Thompson interviews Delphian director Benjamin Murphy. We talk about his work, journey in the art world, and advice for young artists just starting out. We also delve into the topic of freedom within your work and the importance of experimentation to keep you inspired and work fresh. 

In the next two episodes of the Delphian Podcast, as we are locked down during the Coronavirus outbreak, we will be finding out about the work of the two Delphian Gallery directors. This episode Benjamin Murphy talks to Nick JS Thompson about his work, his journey into the art world away from the traditional art school route, what he would change about the art industry and his upcoming projects.

In this "shoutout" episode of the Delphian Podcast, we are joined by painter Nettle Grellier. We talk to her about surviving after university and outside of London, accessibility to arts education, what she would change about the art world, and the inspirations behind her work. Nettle, along with long-term collaborator George Lloyd-Jones is working on a new body of work entitled Common Ground which they will be showing with Delphian Gallery next month. We speak to Nettle about the ups and downs of working so closely with another artist and how this affects her practice. Artist, photographer, curator and publisher Matt Martin joins us on the Delphian Podcast for this episode. Aside from his personal practice, Matt is the events manager of the newly opened Photo Book Cafe in Shoreditch, as well as being the creator of the Photocopy Club. We talk about collaboration in the art world, his affinity for Americana, the importance of supporting artist led projects and his latest book "American Xerography in Colour", among other things. 

In this special edition of the Delphian Podcast we have a recording of a panel discussion that we were invited to lead by Maddie Rose Hills as part of her programme surrounding an exhibition she curated entitled "Where you are not" at Copeland Gallery in Peckham, London. We chose the subject of "Questions about the art world you were afraid to ask" and invited artist and lecturer Charley Peters and Bo Lee Gallery director Jemma Hickman to join us on the panel to discuss the topic. We talk about the different ways in which to approach galleries, how to make yourself discoverable on social media, the different ways to approach your social media output, and the importance of networking to an artists' career among many other topics. 

London based artist Richie Culver joins us on the Delphian Podcast. He tells us about his background and his very different beginnings working in caravan factories in Hull to his current life as an artist and father. His work provokes strong reactions with viewers and we talk about this and the impact that this has on his work. We also talk about his new body of work of bold text pieces in which he is trying to move away from the working class tag which has been associated with him and the reasons behind this.

Art critic, curator, art advisor, and presenter Aindrea Emilife joins us on the Delphian Podcast to talk about her route into such a varied career. As well as the aforementioned, she is also one half of Plop Residency and she gives us the low down on the history of the residency who she runs with Oli Epp. Other topics discussed are the role of the critic, how that is changing in the modern era and how it can inform a practice. 

Performance artist Rosie Gibbens joins us for this episode of the Delphian Podcast. Her intense, often very personal performances raise questions of gender, sexuality and domesticity. We talk to her about tropes of performance art, how crowd reaction and participation affects her work as well as the importance of accepting criticism.

In this episode of the Delphian Podcast we speak to the extremely exciting artist Miranda Forrester who has just completed the Plop Residency and was involved with the BBZ Alternative Graduate Show at Copeland Gallery. We talk about her work, the lack of diversity in art education teaching, and learning to say no to to opportunities that aren't right for you. 

Ellie Pennick is the founder of Guts Gallery, who aim to provide financial support and exhibition opportunities for artists less platformed within today's contemporary art scene. Their desire is to facilitate space and exposure for BAME artists, female artists, working-class artists, queer artists, and artists outside of London (bridging the North/South divide). She joins us for this episode of the Delphian Podcast as we talk about the varying landscape of curation and artist opportunities as well as our collaborative exhibition 'Delphian x Guts'.

Whilst Australian artist Rachael McCully was in London she joined us on the Delphian Podcast to talk about her process, taking inspiration from everyday objects, and juggling a home life with producing work. We also talk about the subject of using art as a form of therapy and her experiences with this. Rachael's abstract works combine bold and muted colours to create perfectly balanced, harmonious compositions which are calm and serene - an antidote to our often hectic lives.  

Charlie Mills is this episode's guest for the Delphian Podcast. He is one third of the curatorial group Collective Ending as well as working for Bold Tendencies and Hannah Barry Gallery in South East London. In this episode we talk about Charlie's numerous projects, past and future, as well as the changing role of the gallery in the current digital era and the difficulties and challenges of site specific works.

Gallerist and curator Kristin Hjellegjerde joins us for the Delphian Podcast this week. Known for its multicultural curatorial approach the gallery quickly gained recognition for exhibiting a roster of innovative, international artists since its inception in 2012. Kristin has galleries in both London and Berlin as well as a new London project space which will also be expanding in 2021. We talk about the way in which she finds artists and how artists can make themselves more visible to galleries, the importance of networking, collaboration between galleries, and advice to young curators. We also touch upon the sometimes prohibitive cost of art fairs and how this affects a gallery's decisions on their programming. 

In this episode of the Delphian Podcast we catch up with our friend Jordy Kerwick, who has previously exhibited with Delphian Gallery, in his hotel room in London We chatted to the Australian born, French based artist about his work, the role of social media in the art world, outsider art, and the importance of artists thinking of themselves as a business. 

South Korean, London based artist Sunyoung Hwang is this weeks Delphian Podcast guest. We talk about her practice, the benefits of artist residencies and the transition from eduction to professional practice. 

South London born painter Rowan Newton joins us for this episode of The Delphian Podcast where we talk about his debut solo exhibition, Fractured Integrity, with Jealous Gallery as well as surviving as an artist, the role and state of art fairs in London and his own podcast Art Proof. 

London based artist and the winner of the Delphian Open Call 2019 Rhiannon Salisbury is our guest for this episode of the Delphian Podcast. We sit down in her East London studio to talk about her work, the role that advertising imagery plays in her paintings, whether or not artists have a responsibility to teach the world something through their work and many other things that feed into her practice.  

We join artist David Shillinglaw in his studio in Margate for this edition of the Delphian Podcast to talk about his work, painting murals around the world and the importance of play in art. We also talk about his side project Dirty Paradise which he runs along with others which has been making appearances over the past few years, bringing artists together from all corners of the globe! 

For episode 5 of the Delphian Podcast, we catch up with Chiara Williams, an artist, gallerist and educator. We talk to her about her time running WW Gallery from her home in East London, to guerilla shows at the Venice Biennale and starting the SOLO Award at London Art Fair. 

We sit down with long time Delphian friend and Beers London artist Andrew Salgado at his London studio. Andrew, a Canadian painter has been based in London for a long time now and we and discuss social media, politics and theory in art as well as consistency in an artists output.

In episode 3 of The Delphian Podcast we talk to artist, curator and author Rosalind Davis. In her personal work, Rosalind produces multi-disciplinary works about the transformation of space. She has also been the permanent curator at Collyer Bristow Gallery in London since 2016 and has curated over 30 exhibitions to date. In 2016 she co-authored the book "What they didn't teach you at art school" with Annabel Tilley and she is a regular lecturer at universities, galleries and organisations across the country.

In this episode Delphian are in downtown LA at Andy Dixon's studio. Andy, a Canadian painter, now based in LA talks about growing up in Vancouver, his background in music and DIY bands and how that led him into the art world. 

We sit down with Kate Mothes, a curator and arts organiser currently based in the American Midwest. Kate runs Young Space, a curatorial project and online platform which emphasises new and exciting work by early-career and emerging artists. We talk about how it is to work outside of a major arts hub, online exhibitions and how social media is changing the landscape for the arts.
