I'm an artist, muralist, author, podcaster, and educator, with a passion for making meaningful connections through art. I'm proud to be a collected Canadian Artist, with my work exhibited internationally and across North America. Recently, I had the privilege of showcasing my pieces in the vibrant art scene of NYC. A highlight of my career has been the completion of my largest project to date, a monumental 3082 sq/ft mural titled Choose Love and Join Hands in Truth and Reconciliation. Along with the installation of this massive project, we ran an Indigenous Mentorship Program. To celebrate the project we held an unveiling and Final Ceremony with elders blessing, dancing and drumming. This collaboration with my community holds great personal significance. In 2021, I took my commitment to creative education further by founding an Art Academy in partnership with my local public school district, with a focus on inclusivity, diversity, and self discovery. Additionally, I established the Colour Me Happy online Community, Book, and Podcast, aiming to spread creative joy far and wide. In the coming years, I'm excited to take my educational workshops to the next level by building an eco-friendly artist residency and arts centre right here in Canada. My artwork has been featured on national television and has graced the pages of international publications and the prestigious Saatchi Gallery. I'm grateful for the support of collectors like Jillian Harris, Sarah Baeumler, Jenna Kutcher, Andrew Salgado, Jann Arden, and Sarah Nicole Landry (thebbirdspapaya). My studio, where my children and I create, is nestled in the tranquil Canadian prairies. It's not just a space, but a sanctuary for artistic expression and shared moments of creativity.” Connect with this episode's featured artist Brandi Hofer here: Website: https://www.brandihofer.ca/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brandihoferstudios/ Instagram/ Colour Me Happy Community: https://www.instagram.com/colourmehappycommunity/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BrandiLHofer Check out Brandi's Online Portrait Class: https://brandihoferstudios.thrivecart.com/portrait-class/?_gl=1*1cjtoae*_ga*MTQ1NzU0MjQyNS4xNzIzNzY1OTcx*_ga_05JXSG6TKL*MTcyNDc1NjYwMi4zLjEuMTcyNDc1NjcyNS4wLjAuMA.. Instantly recognizable and beaming with positivity, Michelle Hoogveld's colorful, kaleidoscopic murals demonstrate the power of love, connection, and color. Her graphic, geometric compositions weave an intricate tapestry of joy and passion, the relationships we form with each other, and the one thing that connects us all: love.“I chose February 14 as my first day as a professional artist because I wanted to choose love,” Michelle says. “I wanted that to be my day of choosing the thing that brought me the most joy and passion. At that time, I had no idea that my art would be about love and connection, so it's a symbol and a meaningful date because it's not only just about love romantically for the world, but it became a catalyst for this career change and my goal as an artist moving forward.”In today's podcast episode, host and NOT REAL ART founder Scott “Sourdough” Power sits down with Michelle to discuss the Canadian artist's practice and creative process. A former athlete, Michelle shares the valuable lessons she picked up playing soccer and how it helped her in the studio. “[Being an athlete] taught me determination, [motivation], and hard work ethic,” she says. “You put in the time. That very much translates to running your own business and being an artist. You have to put in the time, you have to dream big, and you have to have goals of excellence.”Michelle and Scott also chat about the motivating effects of self-care, why her practice remains mostly a “one-man show,” and the importance of “just showing up.” Tune into today's episode with Michelle Hoogveld for a conversation about color, connection, and creating a brighter world.Key Points From This Episode:Some of the colorful, eye-catching murals Michelle has done in LA.The massive studio she recently found that can accommodate her large-scale work.Insight into her creative process and why she mostly remains a “one-man show.”What Michelle learned about putting in the time and dreaming big from being an athlete. Why she chose February 14th as the first day of her career as a professional artist.Influential people in her life and how the painter Andrew Salgado has inspired her.How seeing others chase their dreams gives you permission to try.Advice for young artists who are trying to find their voice in the art world.Reasons that love, connection, and color are at the core of Michelle's work.A look at her daily schedule and routine and the power of just showing up.How self-care informs motivation and even inspiration for Michelle. What the future holds for today's guest and where you can view her work. For more information, please visit http://notrealart.com/michelle-hoogveld

Daan Noppen (1977), born in Arnhem (The Netherlands) is an international artist mainly working in drawing and painting. He is best known for his realistic larger than life drawings of portraits and bodies. Physics and it’s relation to our being, our emotions, plays a big part in his work. The artist plays with notions of reality by projecting time as a physical dimension. Rather than becoming something ‘scientific’ this opens up a visual world of our hidden layers of our desires, our pain and our cry for being loved. ‘Amsterdam based artist Daan Noppen brings a special dynamism to his pencil drawings of still life and portraits. His works are not only eye-catching for their precise layering of details, but also in their massive size that gives his subjects a more palpable presence. A closer look at each piece reveals mathematical equations in between the pencil lines that relate to our reality. More recent works express the artist’s continued fascination with mathematics, geometry, and physics, as his figures appear to be gauged, dissipate, and intermingle in a void of empty vector space’. - Hi-Fructose Magazine (March 2016) Daan Noppen’s work has been exhibited in New York(USA), New Orleans(USA), Mexico DF(Mexico), Shanghai(China), Metz(France), Luxembourg(Luxembourg), Munchen(Germany), Traun(Austria), Antwerp(Belgium) and in Amstedam (The Netherlands). The artists Symmetry I&II drawing recently won an A’design Award 2016 in the category Arts, craft and ready made. Topics Discussed In This Episode: His origin story within the arts The breaking down of traditional gender roles A residency that he did at Andrew Salgado’s studio in London The differentiation between tasteful nudes and pornography Using different creative skill sets in conjunction with your current art medium Book: “The Way Of The Superior Man” by David Deida www.artistdecoded.com
Andrew Salgado is a Canadianborn artist who works at his studio in Hackney, London. His work has been exhibited all around the world and Andrew was personally featured in the 2014 documentary Storytelling, which followed him as he created a series of works. To use one of my favourite oxymoron’s, his paintings are a little on the large side, with works of portraiture incorporating elements of abstraction and symbolic meaning. I recently met with him at his studio and as we sat down with a cup of coffee, it was immediately evident he was very easy going and relaxed.
We sit down with long time Delphian friend and Beers London artist Andrew Salgado at his London studio. Andrew, a Canadian painter has been based in London for a long time now and we and discuss social media, politics and theory in art as well as consistency in an artists output.
Show Notes: Andrew Salgado is a Canadian Artist who lives and works in London and has exhibited his work around the world. His paintings are described as large-scale works of portraiture that incorporate elements of abstraction and symbolic meaning. Andrew received a BFA from University of BC and an MFA from Chelse College of Art & Design. In this episode, we have an honest conversation about the current state of the 'art world' today, how technology has democratised the industry, why Andrew became an artist, his creative process and how he finds inspiration. On this episode of Art and Cocktails, Kat interviews contemporary artist Andrew Salgado about the inspiration behind his recent exhibition at Angell Gallery, his approach to painting, bringing pleasure back to art-making, the importance of rest for artists and much more. Andrew Salgado is a leading young figurative painter with over a dozen sold-out international exhibitions, including London, New York, Zagreb, Miami, Cape Town, and Basel. In 2017, Salgado was the youngest artist to ever receive a survey-exhibition at The Canadian High Commission in London, accompanied by a 300-page monograph, both of which were entitled TEN. www.andrewsalgado.com
Conversation 22: The Story, Journey and Passion of Personal Trainer and Wellness Coach, Andrew Salgado “If somebody shares their health or wellness experiences, I feel very honored because I feel that health is a very personal thing and if they share that with you, they’re able to tell you what they are going through right now. (When they share this with me) It’s like “wow, that for sharing that with me” and I definelty want to do my best because they’re sharing that for a reason. I try to do my part in taking the information and trying to work with them, find them (my clients) right where they are and I try to meet them at that spot.” - Andrew Salgado My conversation today is with Personal Trainer and Wellness Coach Andrew Salgado. As registered dietitians, we sometimes get mistaken for the expert in everything health related. We know as professionals that food, nutrition and physical activity have a very cozy relationship. I don’t know about you, but I was not trained at all in fitness and do not believe I am an expert, but I know how to find them. Which is why I wanted to sit down with Andrew Salgado who is a fitness expert, prsonal trainer and wellness coach. As Andrew puts it, whatever modality you choose you must have good programming because exercise is different from learning other things. You learn the concept and then your body executes the movement and you need proper body awareness for safety. Andrew is also very in-sync with communicating with his clients and meeting people where they are at on their wellness journey through wellness coaching, which sets him apart from a lot of other fitness professionals. This week, an article in the New York Times about Richard Avedon's project “In the American West” has us discussing legacy. Who really owns your work after you've gone? Also, can you overshoot your own “creative sweet spot” only to end up in uncharted waters? We use the work of fantastic painter Andrew Salgado as an example. Plus, when do you give in to technology, even if it means changing a workflow that has worked for years? Janette Beckman is our Photographer of the Week.

Andrew Salgado is a Canadian figurative painter who lives and works in London and has exhibited his work around the world. His paintings are large-scale and incorporate elements of abstraction and symbolic meaning. He is featured in books, is the subject of a documentary (Storytelling), and his work will be displayed at his latest exhibit, The Fool Makes a Joke at Midnight, which will be in New York City from May 7-28. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/andrewsalgado In this episode, Andrew discusses: -How he fell victim to the clutches of London. -How he incorporates things around his studio and from his life into his artwork and anything that is around him is "fair game." -How he approaches his paintings in a fluid fashion and being as flexible as possible. -The importance of having fun when you paint and to enjoy the creative process. -The dangers that can come when you try to emulate your favorite artists too closely and how it can start holding back your personal style. -The fact that art is a marathon not a sprint and how young artists expect too much too soon. -How every artist's definition of success is different and what his personal idea of success is. -How money, or the promise of money, almost always affects an artist's creativity. -The idea of a debut being an experience in which you reveal your art for the first time. -The power that comes from seeing art in person. -How he has a trusted few people that he will show his work to, because otherwise too many opinions can derail his creative process and make him think too much. -How attempting to make the perfect piece of art is a beautiful thing to do, despite it being a futile pursuit of perfection. -Bjork as an artist. -The significance of the title of his latest gallery, The Fool Makes a Joke at Midnight. -The power of social media, but the disservice that it does for viewing art. -How figurative painters are treated as though they haven't evolved to a higher understanding of aesthetics like abstract painters do, and how angry it makes him. -How the beauty of art happens when you really push yourself outside of what is comfortable. Andrew's Final Push will inspire you to work twice as hard and worry half as much! Quotes: "I think of myself as a scientist tinkering about in a laboratory." "If it's in the studio, it's fair game and it can end up in a painting or it can end up inspiring a painting." "I let the paintings take me on a ride as opposed to getting frustrated when they aren't going the way I want them to go." "As soon as I started letting the paintings tell me what direction they wanted to go, I became stronger." "Whatever you need to do to make yourself a stronger artist -- go for it." "The more we experiment and nurture our processes and don't feel bad about our processes, we can reach higher levels of painterly transcendence." "Art is about process, and it is a lifelong process." "People can make casual comments that can really unhinge the creative process." "As artist, we totally know when that painting isn't sitting right." "What I am trying to do with my work is learn how to reevaluate the figure through the language of abstraction." "I'm trying to make my works challenging for myself to create them and I'm trying to make my works challenging for my viewer to receive them." "If you think you know what you're doing with too much conviction, you're probably not pushing yourself hard enough." Andrew Salgado paints large colorful portraits and abstract figurative work. He is originally from Canada but after attending graduate school at Chelsea he made London his home. In this interview, Andrew and Antrese talk about living in a different country and how immersing yourself in an artistic culture different from your own presents challenges and opportunities for growth. Those opportunities are central to this discussion - Andrew finds opportunities for growth all around him- from fears we have as artists about our work, to competitive rivalries. How these issues affect our work is entirely dependent on mindset, as Andrew says “What happens in the studio is just a microcosmic example of what happens in life.” **Support the podcast** Savvy Painter is a labor of love.
