Today's episode kicks off with jokes, chaos, and the whole crew sliding into a heavy cultural debate about attraction, race, and whether “preference” is ever really neutral. A TikTok clip sparks a long breakdown on mixed-race desirability, proximity to whiteness, and how history, culture, and personal experience shape what we call attraction. The team go back and forth on whether certain preferences are harmless or rooted in something deeper, with Kristy joining remotely to add more nuance. It's honest, sharp, and full of those unfiltered TDA moments that only happen when the whole family is in the room.

Send us a textIn this final episode of the year, I'm talking about something I see all the time in my work — but something women rarely feel able to admit out loud: that the desperate longing for a baby doesn't always match how they feel once they are actually here. After more than two decades supporting women through pregnancy, birth, and those early vulnerable weeks, I've heard this story in so many different forms. Today, I'm sharing the experience of a mum I met at a recent coffee morning — Emma — who gave me permission to talk about her journey.Emma had two miscarriages before this pregnancy. She spent months just trying to get to the birth, believing that once her baby was safely here, everything would fall into place. But her birth ended up being long, heavily managed, and exhausting, leaving her feeling out of control. She also struggled with the after-effects of the pain relief she received. And when she finally held her baby, she didn't feel the rush of emotion she'd imagined. Her question to me — quiet, honest, and full of guilt — forms the heart of this episode.Together, we unpack why so many women feel this way, why these feelings don't mean anything is wrong, and how the emotional transition into motherhood is far more complex than most people prepare you for.If you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. Book: THE LAST OF EARTHFrom the award-winning author of Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line comes a stunning historical novel set in nineteenth-century Tibet that follows two outsiders—an Indian schoolteacher spying for the British Empire and an English “lady” explorer—as they venture into a forbidden kingdom.1869. Tibet is closed to Europeans, an infuriating obstruction for the rapidly expanding British Empire. In response, Britain begins training Indians—permitted to cross borders that white men may not—to undertake illicit, dangerous surveying expeditions into Tibet.Balram is one such surveyor-spy, an Indian schoolteacher who, for several years, has worked for the British, often alongside his dearest friend, Gyan. But Gyan went missing on his last expedition and is rumored to be imprisoned within Tibet. Desperate to rescue his friend, Balram agrees to guide an English captain on a foolhardy mission: After years of paying others to do the exploring, the captain, disguised as a monk, wants to personally chart a river that runs through southern Tibet. Their path will cross fatefully with that of another Westerner in disguise, fifty-year-old Katherine. Denied a fellowship in the all-male Royal Geographical Society in London, she intends to be the first European woman to reach Lhasa.A polyphonic novel about the various ways humans try to leave a mark on the world—from the enduring nature of family and friendship to the egomania and obsessions of the colonial enterprise—The Last of Earth confirms Deepa Anappara as one of our greatest and most ambitious storytellers.https://www.deepa-anappara.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

While Laura obsesses over blue-tongued lizards and “the most delicious blue drink of all time,” Charles searches for the courage to speak on something that's been troubling him deeply; the suicidal side effects of James Cameron's Avatar. Clinical psychology tells us arguably that the Navi fantasy world is the ultimate killer, and Vanity Project is here to find out why. This final chapter of Vanity Project's chromatic trilogy has Laura and Charles asking each other, why so blue?

This episode reflects the launch of a new collaborative project initiative, now into it's second year, with The New Crafthouse and final year Womenswear Students in the School of Design and Technology at London College of Fashion. We talk to Rosie Scott, the Director of the New Craft House, Xandra Drepaul, final year Senior Lecturer on BA Womenswear, and final year students Poppy White and Celine Asmar at the beginning of the project. We then return to summarise at the end of the project looking the inventing new craft processes the students developed from shredding to creating new fabrics from reusing fabric selvedge's. This podcast also contextualises and examines sustainable fabric sourcing, from deadstock to new platforms for textile reuse. Post Covid, the growth of kilo sales and sourcing deadstock fabric has gained momentum across all courses here at LCF, and the impact and awareness of waste, circularity and sustainability in fabric sourcing has taken students from the fabric shops of Soho, to looking for creativity in deadstock and end of line fabric to reimagine their fashion visions in cloth. At Colour Collective Podcast we are interested to find out how this works in practice, to help students navigate this new landscape of saved from landfill textiles and discuss how we design now. As a student, the process of concept to colour to cloth in the creative process, now involves us as designers to look and reinvent a new life for leftover fabrics and find new processes to innovate construction, tactility and colour. Tutors and Students are embarking on new ways of working, a collaborative approach with resellers of designer fabrics, such as New Craft House x LCF project with final year students to inspire future designers to match their design ethos and values to sourcing and sustainability. As a lecturer over the years, I have witnessed many changes in the cycle of design process, but the sourcing of fabric for fashion designers has now entered another era. I want to find out how the growing concern for our planet, has brought us to rethink how we design, source and reuse fabric, and how this has shifted our creative thinking. Hughes continuously investigates colour and composition—tuning into their own inherent language to produce these dazzling paintings that hold this wonderful capacity for light, movement, and memory.  In her current exhibition Colour Memories at Gow Lansford Onehunga, Hughes presents a beautiful new body of paintings that continues in her exploration of memory, but more specifically to these ideas of artistic influence and lineage. Within Colour Memories, Hughes approaches these ideas of artistic lineage by directly responding to 11 female painters that have influenced her own artistic practice over the years. Bringing both their paintings and Hughes' response paintings into the gallery, creating a space of direct dialogue, response, and exchange between works and artists. Better known as Pop Bang Colour, he produces artwork using model cars instead of brushes, and has created paintings at motoring events for almost 20 years. He even painted a giant Lewis Hamilton for Reebok, earning a Guinness World Record in the process. In a similar fashion to last episode's guest, Ian remembers identifying parts of cars from the back seat of his parents Metro, he could even work out a vehicle by its tail lights at night. They travelled to France in the Metro, but him and his brother had to be in separate cars to stop them fighting! His Uncle was a Car Designer for Rover, which meant the entire family had one… for cheap! His Uncle had the MG Metro Turbo. Another Uncle had a Chevette, which Ian now owns. Each Christmas they would go to the model shop to pick a new slot car. We hope you enjoy this one, please check out Ian's work here. https://www.popbangcolour.comA big thanks to our new podcast sponsor Viking Covers. If you are looking for quality and customizable indoor or outdoor vehicle covers please go check them out. www.vikingcovers.co.ukWe'll be telling you more about these guys soon - stay tuned.Support the showWe'd love you to hear and share your stories, please tag and follow us on social media. www.instagram.com/mydadscar_podcastwww.Facebook.com/mydadscar podcastwww.buymeacoffee.com/mydadscarIf you'd like to support the podcast and are able to, you can ‘buy us a coffee' which will help towards costs of hosting and purchasing equipment to allow us to record guests in person, rather than just on zoom. Send us a textIn this episode, I sit down with my friend and fellow birth worker Jen Culley to talk about the reality that early labour is often overlooked in modern birth preparation. We explore how early labour is represented on social media and how these portrayals can unintentionally shape women's expectations in unhelpful ways. While short clips and reels can beautifully capture the moment a baby is born, they rarely show the quiet, powerful, and often lengthy process that leads up to it. Early labour can take hours — sometimes days — and it's during this time that your mindset, support, and environment matter most.Jen and I reflect on how, in the past, women would have grown up seeing birth unfold — as daughters, sisters, or friends. That shared experience built instinctive knowledge and trust in the body's rhythms. Today, many of us enter labour without ever having witnessed it, and that loss of communal wisdom can make early labour feel confusing or even frightening. We talk about how this lack of understanding can impact the rest of the birth, and why the way early labour begins often sets the tone for how the rest of labour unfolds. We also discuss what early labour support looks like today, especially the variation in NHS care, where women are often left to navigate this phase alone. Jen and I highlight how the presence of a doula can transform this stage — offering reassurance, practical guidance, and emotional steadiness when it's needed most. And finally, we dive deeply into the partner's pivotal role — how they can support progress, protect space, and bring a sense of calm and safety that allows oxytocin to flow and labour to build naturally. If you've ever wondered how to make early labour work for you, not against you — or if you simply want to understand this phase in a deeper, more realistic way — this episode is for you.Contact Jen Culley - Instagram   Website   Memoirs of a DoulaIf you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. Over the course of our lifetime, we around 34,000 litres of urine, according to Business Insider. Urine evacuates the nitrogen-containing waste produced by the organs and expelled into the blood, like urea and uric acid for example. It's also made up of water and mineral salts. It tends to be a clear shade of yellow, ranging from pale to dark at different times of the day. Nevertheless, our pee can come in as many as ten different shades, which can on occasion lead to unpleasant surprises when going to the bathroom. Some are due to what we eat and drink, while others are caused by health conditions like urinary infections, diabetes or kidney stones. As we approach World Kidney Day, which falls on 9th March every year, let's take a moment to go through all those various colours and what they may mean from a health perspective. To start out, why is it yellow most of the time? What are the oddest colours urine can take on? What if the colour doesn't go back to normal? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Send us a textIn this episode, I explore one of the most delicate and important questions in birth work: Is my lived experience more important than your future one?So many women feel torn between wanting to share their birth story — whether it was empowering, challenging, or deeply traumatic — and wanting to protect others from fear or unrealistic expectations. But how do we find the balance? How do we share truthfully without limiting what's possible for someone else? This conversation unpacks the tension between past experience and future potential. Together, we look at how to reflect on your own birth, what to learn from it, and how to share your story responsibly — so that both honesty and hope can exist side by side. Key Takeaways:Your lived experience matters deeply — but it's not a template for anyone else's.Sharing your story can help others, but only when it's framed with context and possibility.Negative stories can warn, but they shouldn't define someone else's limits.Positive stories bring hope, balance, and proof of what's possible.Reflection is powerful: understanding your own birth can help you prepare differently next time.Protecting someone's dream of a physiological birth doesn't mean sugar-coating reality — it means giving space for hope and autonomy. If you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

Feeling busier and more distracted than last year? You're not imagining it—and you're not powerless. This guide turns a simple "peg" memory method into a fast, executive-friendly workflow you can use on the spot. Why do we forget more at work—and what actually helps right now? We forget because working memory is tiny and modern work shreds attention; the fix is to externalise what you can and anchor what you can't. As channels multiply—email, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Line, Telegram—messages blur and retrieval costs explode. First, move details out of your head and into calendars, task apps, and checklists. Second, when you must recall live (presentations, Q&A, pitches), use a method that forces order on demand. That's where "peg numbers + peg words + peg pictures" wins: it's fast, portable, and doesn't depend on a screen. Do now: Decide which meetings require live recall versus notes-on-desk. Use tools for storage; use pegs for performance.  What is the Peg Method—and why does it work under pressure? The Peg Method gives you nine permanent "hooks" (1–9) that never change; you hang today's items on those hooks using vivid mini-scenes. Consistency is the trick. When the pegs stay fixed, recall becomes automatic: say the peg, see the picture, retrieve the item—in order. This scales from shopping lists to leadership talking points, risk registers, and sales objections during a live demo. Executives like it because it's device-free, language-agnostic, and works whether you're in Tokyo, Sydney, or Seattle. Do now: Lock your baseline pegs today so they never change: 1 = Run, 2 = Zoo, 3 = Tree, 4 = Door, 5 = Hive, 6 = Sick, 7 = Heaven, 8 = Gate, 9 = Wine.  How do I build pictures that "stick" in seconds? Use A-C-M-E: Action, Colour, Me, Exaggeration—three-second scenes beat perfect ones. Give each peg-scene movement (Action), crank the saturation (Colour), put yourself in the frame (Me), and overdo scale or drama (Exaggeration). You don't need to "see" it like a film; a whispered line works ("Door: Johanna blocks sign-off"). Across markets, this reduces blank-outs because your brain encodes motion, salience, and self-relevance faster than abstract text. Do now: Practise with two items right now—peg #1 Run and #2 Zoo—timing yourself to three seconds per image.  Can pegs really keep a long list in order? (Worked example) Yes—because the order is baked into the numbers, you can recite forwards, backwards, or jump to any slot. Try this city sequence: Sydney, Toronto, São Paulo, Johannesburg, Seattle, London, Mumbai, Vladivostok, Kagoshima. 1 Run: sprint alongside a kangaroo (Sydney) with a starter pistol; 2 Zoo: monkeys hurl "Toronto" nameplates; 3 Tree: a palm bends under a "São Paulo" sash; 4 Door: "Johannesburg" is painted thick across a revolving door; 5 Hive: bees wear "Seattle" face masks; 6 Sick: a syringe squirts the word "London"; 7 Heaven: "Mumbai" descends pearl-white stairs; 8 Gate: a rail gate slams down with "Vladivostok"; 9 Wine: a crate stamped "Kagoshima." Do now: Recite pegs in rhythm—run, zoo, tree, door…—then replay the scenes. Test #7 or #4 out of order to prove the jump-to-slot works.  What if I'm "not visual," get confused, or blank on stage? Say the peg aloud and attach a one-line cue; keep pegs permanent; rehearse forwards and backwards. If imagery feels fuzzy, talk it: "Tree: São Paulo sash." The rhyme is your safety rail. Confusion usually comes from changing pegs—don't. Under pressure, we default to habits; two short reps (forward/back) create enough redundancy to survive a curve-ball question. If lists exceed nine, chunk them (1–9, 10–18) or create a second peg set for a different category (e.g., "Client Risks"). Do now: Lock your 1–9; rehearse your next briefing once forward, once backward, standing up to simulate pressure.  How do I integrate pegs with my 2025 workflow without more cognitive load? Use a two-lane system: tools for storage and pegs for performance; tag owners and dates inside the images to encode accountability. Calendars, CRMs, and project trackers still carry due dates, attachments, and threads. Pegs handle what you must say from memory: topline metrics, names, objections, decisions. For leadership teams across APAC, EU, and North America, this reduces meeting drag and hedges against tech hiccups. Pro tip: weave critical metadata into the scene ("Door: Sarah blocks approval until Friday 17:00"). Do now: Pick one recurring meeting and move its opening five points to pegs; keep everything else in your agenda doc.  Conclusion: design around your brain, don't fight it Your brain isn't failing—you're asking it to juggle too much in noisy environments. Externalise the bulk; anchor the rest with nine permanent pegs and A-C-M-E pictures. In a week, the "snap-back" effect appears: you say the peg, the scene plays, and the item drops into place—without the stress. Do now: Lock pegs 1–9, run the five-minute drill today, and use pegs for your very next high-stakes conversation.  Author Credentials Dr. Greg Story, Ph.D. in Japanese Decision-Making, is President of Dale Carnegie Tokyo Training and Adjunct Professor at Griffith University. Send us a textIn this episode, I talk about one of the most emotionally testing times in pregnancy — the waiting game. When your due date is approaching, or has come and gone, it can feel as though the world is on pause while everyone keeps asking, 'Have you had the baby yet?' I explore what this waiting period can really feel like — the impatience, the frustration, and the mental tug of war that happens when your baby still isn't ready to arrive.I also talk about the pressure that can build when conversations about induction of labour start, and how those offers can influence how you feel about your body, your baby, and the timing of birth. We chat about the idea that 42 weeks is often considered the outer limit of pregnancy — but how that's not true for everyone. For many women, birth can unfold safely and beautifully beyond that point. Still, talking about 42 weeks helps shift the focus away from the growing trend of early induction at 39 weeks, which can interrupt the natural rhythm of both mother and baby.I also share some of the incredible support available during this time from myself, Shellie Poulter, and Kemi Johnson, who all offer services to help women navigate these later stages of pregnancy with confidence and calm. I'll include their links below. If you're currently waiting — or supporting someone who is — this episode will help you find reassurance, perspective, and patience in those final days. Your baby will come, and how you navigate this time matters just as much as the birth itself.Mentioned in this episode:✨ Shellie Poulter – Instagram Website✨ Kemi Johnson – Instagram Website✨ My Own Birth Support Services - InstagramIf you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. In the new novel Pick a Colour, the answer to that question is a resounding yes. The debut novel from Souvankham Thammavongsa centres on Ning, the owner of a nail salon. Before she was a nail technician, Ning was a boxer … and she hasn't completely shrugged off those instincts from the ring. Souvankham won the Giller Prize in 2020 for her story collection How to Pronounce Knife, and her new novel is shortlisted for this year's prize. She joins Mattea Roach to talk about her fondness for nail salons, the weight of names and what being in the boxing ring taught her about herself.Liked this conversation?
