Veronica Ryan talks to Ben Luke about her influences—from writers to musicians and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work.Ryan was born in 1956 in Plymouth on the Caribbean island of Montserrat and came to the UK as an infant. She now lives between London and New York. She explores personal, collective and historical memory through a range of sculptural materials and processes. Her installations and individual sculptures combine a wealth of things and techniques, often all at once, from found objects to time-honoured sculptural materials like bronze and marble; and from carving to casting and crocheting. Colour plays a vital role in her work, in the varied hues of textiles or plaster. And she creates forms as diverse as seeds and fruits, mats and nets, pillows and blankets and architectural structures. Through arresting and often multilayered arrangements, she evokes the minutiae of everyday experience (often with a profoundly personal meaning), makes reference to resonant historical events and their legacies, and addresses major human themes and rites of passage. She reflects on the meanings embedded in her materials, her relationship with psychoanalysis and unconscious processes, and her distinctive approach to displaying her work. She discusses the early influence of her mother's textiles, her visits to the British Museum and her epiphanic encounter with the work of Eva Hesse and Louise Bourgeois. She reflects on the importance of the poetry of Maya Angelou and chamber music and reggae, and she answers our usual questions, including the ultimate: what is art for?Veronica Ryan: Multiple Conversations, Whitechapel Gallery, London, 1 April – 14 June 2026 Hosted on Acast. We're doing a cast on background colouring. There are a million was to do colour for your backgrounds, the only important thing is the finished result, it really doesn't matter how you get there, as long as it's not with AI, but learning how others do things can always be helpful. For myself I got where I did by looking at the great work of others and trying to get the same results, plus a LOT of trial and error. I'll outline here a very simplified version of what I do. I have two main comic styles: a flat cartoony cell shaded style for Bottomless Waitress and a more painterly pseudo realistic style for Pinky TA. These tips apply to both but mainly Pinky TA. First up I work digitally and my lineart is top layer in grey or black, set to "Multiply" so all the non-lines parts are transparent and can show through the colour of the bottom layers. I create about 2 to 4 background layers, depending how complex I want to be. The very bottom layer is my simple fill layer. Usually I decide on a simple gradient for each panel. The gradient is usually made up of no more that 3 colours. It's a good way to very quickly add a sense of depth and visual interest to an image. I usually pick a colour to represent the feeling of the emotional vibe of the scene or something that fits realistically with the image. On the layer above that I'll colour objects, buildings, and things in the background. I find It's very important to know that the colours of your backgrounds influence the colours of the things within it, especially your characters (if you're doing a more realistic style), and lighting is a massive part of that because without light there is no colour or vision, so know where your light is coming from and what kind of light it is: sunlight, lamps, windows, candles, spotlights, moonlight, universal light etc. That will also infleunce how hard, distinct and dark to make your shadows. On a layer above those two I'll colour my figures. I take cues from the main background colours on how to colour my characters so that they fit better with the scene, and I also light them the same way. They will still be coloured in their standard colours mostly but the panel colour influences how their shadow colours look. Finally in another layer above the line art I will have an "effects "layer which will go over everything. This could be for bloom effects around bright lights or fire, it could be for smoke or fog, or often I use it for a trick to create "atmospheric perfective": this is where things that are further away become dimmer or faded and it's a very easy way to add depth. To do this I just add a gradient of a single colour- usually white, and set its opacity to fade to zero, with the zero opacity part of the gradient over the foreground and the full white over the background in the distance, then I set the opacity of that layer to be quite low, maybe 15%. So that's one of my methods. I hope you are able to get something helpful from it! In the cast Tantz and Banes also outline some of their very different techniques. How do you work? This week we have another best off from Gunwallace and this time it's - Miss Sisyphus - Slow, faded monochrome ennui, colour bleeds in gradually, like a stain on paper, filing with life, danger, adventure, futuristic exploration, like a dull and dusty bud, blossoming into a gorgeous flower, full of colour and heady scent. Send a textLast week I talked about hypervigilance — what happens when a woman's nervous system doesn't feel safe in pregnancy, birth or postpartum. This week, I explore one of the most evidence-based ways to reduce it: continuity of carer.Continuity is not just about seeing the same service. It's about being known. It's about relationship. And decades of research show that when women receive continuity of midwifery care, outcomes improve across the board — including lower rates of preterm birth, fewer interventions, and better mental health outcomes. But this conversation goes beyond statistics.I look at why birth is relational and hormonal, why oxytocin depends on safety, and how familiarity in the room — whether from a midwife, a prepared partner, or a doula — can change the entire physiological landscape of labour.I also ask the uncomfortable question: if continuity is so well evidenced, why is it still treated as optional?Because safety in birth is often framed as machines and monitoring.Yet the evidence is clear.Safety is relationship.Safety is familiarity.Safety is being known. And continuity changes everything.Access the Discover Your North Star Course HereIf you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. There is some old school, good old fashioned, classic CheapShow action this week on the podcast! Paul is very excited to share his latest “Gannon's Golden Games” segment with a game he has been after for a while… The Colour Of Money. Although it's based on an ITV game show, you'd be hard pressed to remember it OR care, but is the electronic board game as thrilling as the TV show wanted it to be? Paul and Eli will find out. If all that isn't enough, we open up a new casefile from our “Tales from the Shop Floor” cabinet to share a story that promises to deliver that classic CheapShow horror, disgust and amusement. And if all that isn't enough, they throw in a few new characters too… Although you may wish they'd throw them out again soon after! This week! As part of Black History Month's centenary year, Jeremy Cobb and Candace the Magnificent welcome a powerful panel into the Halfling Stadium: Amihan “The Rose Cleric” , Aetherius Bordeaux, “Lamia” Cassie Walker and Queon Story. Marking 100 years of Black History Month, the conversation centres on the challenges of existing in the TTRPG space while telling authentic stories as a Person of Colour. Together, they unpack the spicy realities of the industry, including visibility at tables, who gets platformed, tokenism, structural barriers, and the uneven ladder of success. All four guests are storytellers in their own right, and the episode highlights how they interweave heritage, lived experience, and creativity into their work. From Black storytelling traditions to the responsibility of building inclusive spaces, this roundtable reflects on the weight and the beauty of carrying culture into fantasy, and what it truly means to uplift other POC creatives. In this episode, we talk to Lisa Nakamura, Professor at the University of Michigan and author of The Inattention Economy: Seeing the Digital Labour of Women of Colour. Lisa reflects on how race, gender, and power shape the histories of digital technology, focusing on the often overlooked labour that has made computing possible. She discusses the work of Navajo women in semiconductor manufacturing, the role of Japanese Americans in early tech production, and why attention, care, and recognition matter for understanding digital culture today.
Send us a textThis episode is a little different! I decided to answer a batch of listener questions that were shorter than the single-question episodes, and they fit perfectly with what's coming up in the coming weeks. As I went through them, I noticed quite a few shared a common theme, and it reminded me just how important it is to dedicate some episodes specifically to postpartum experiences, because there is so much to unpack in those first days, weeks and months. I hope you enjoy this Q&A — it's honest, practical, and grounded in real experiences from real listeners. If you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. For more than a decade, Sir Sajid Javid was at the heart of power in Britain. First elected in 2010, he rapidly rose to his first cabinet position as Culture Secretary. The son of a bus driver and comprehensive school-educated, he was one of the few cabinet members from a working-class background. He went on to hold several ministerial roles under three different prime ministers including Chancellor of the Exchequer under Boris Johnson. In February 2026 he came to the Intelligence Squared stage to share lessons from his time in government. Drawing from his new memoir The Colour of Home, he also revealed his story of a childhood marked by poverty and racism, and explored his thoughts on Britain's multiracial society. ---- This is the first instalment of a two-part episode. In this episode, I sit down with Jane Langof, feng shui master, consultant and educator, to explore a different kind of noise - not the mental noise or the pace of modern life, but the subtle and often unnoticed energy within our homes, workspaces and daily environments. For over fifteen years, Jane has helped people understand the powerful connection between their inner world and physical surroundings, blending ancient feng shui principles with modern living. We unpack how energy flow, design, clutter and intention can either support clarity and wellbeing or quietly drain our focus, relationships and rest.At its heart, this episode is an invitation to slow down and notice what your surroundings are communicating back to you. Send us a textIn this episode, I'm joined by Fenja, who shares her freebirth story with honesty, depth, and clarity. At a time when freebirth is being widely discussed — and often misunderstood — Fenja's experience offers a grounded and much-needed perspective on what informed, conscious birth preparation can look like.Fenja speaks openly about the extensive work she did during pregnancy: building physiological understanding, engaging in emotional and mental preparation, and developing a deep trust in her body and decision-making. Her choices were not made lightly. They were rooted in knowledge, reflection, and personal responsibility.During her pregnancy, Fenja chose to hire a doula — not as someone to direct her birth, but as optional, woman-led support. When labour unfolded, she recognised that what she needed most was solitude and privacy, and she chose not to call her doula to the birth. This decision was hers alone, made in the moment, based on what felt right in her body and nervous system. With recent media coverage and coroner's reports attempting to suggest that doulas are influencing women to make unsafe decisions, Fenja's story provides an important counterpoint. It clearly demonstrates that women are capable of making informed, autonomous decisions about their own births, and that doulas do not make decisions for women — they support them, when and if that support is wanted. This episode is not about persuading anyone to freebirth. It is about respecting women's capacity to prepare deeply, think critically, and choose consciously.Fenja's story is thoughtful, grounded, and a deep reminder that birth choices cannot be reduced to headlines or assumptions. You can find Fenja and her work at helikraft.co.ukOn Instagram @heilkraftosteopathyIf you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. How did the arrival of colour and film technology transform cinema and its cultural politics? Laurie Taylor explores the intertwined histories of technology, aesthetics, and identity.Swarnavel Eswaran, filmmaker and scholar at Michigan State University, introduces us to the remarkable story of Kodak Krishnan – Eastman Kodak's “man from the East.” Krishnan played a pivotal role in bringing American film technology to India during the mid-20th century, a period when cinema was becoming a powerful medium for shaping ideas of modernity and national pride.Kirsty Sinclair Dootson, Associate Professor in the History of Art department at University College London, is one of the organisers of the Bombay Colour Research Network. Her book The Rainbow's Gravity asked how new colour media transformed the way Britain saw itself and its empire between 1856 and 1968. Her research also examines how colour technologies – from early tinting processes to the vibrant palettes of Bollywood musicals became part of debates over race, class, and cultural representation. Kirsty Sinclair Dootson is one of the academics who has been a New Generation Thinker, on the scheme run by the BBC and the Arts and Humanities Research Council to share research on radio. America experienced its own colour revolution in 2020, when George Soros and his Open Society Foundation launched the Black Lives Matter & George Floyd psychological operations during the Summer of Love. The culture was forever changed in the aftermath of one of the dumbest periods in American history. This century, colour revolutions have been financed worldwide by the Soros network, including the Arab Spring uprisings, the first Ukrainian revolution of 2004, and the multiple operations in the former Soviet Union. Understanding the nature of the operators makes it easier to determine how to prevent future overthrows, and predicting where they might happen next.—Watch the video version on one of the Macroaggressions Channels:Rumble: https://rumble.com/c/Macroaggressions YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@MacroaggressionsPodcast—MACRO & Charlie Robinson LinksHypocrazy Audiobook: https://amzn.to/4aogwmsThe Octopus of Global Control Audiobook: https://amzn.to/3xu0rMmWebsite: www.Macroaggressions.io Merch Store: https://macroaggressions.dashery.com/ Link Tree: https://linktr.ee/macroaggressionspodcast—Activist Post FamilyActivist Post: www.ActivistPost.com Natural Blaze: www.NaturalBlaze.com —Support Our SponsorsAnarchapulco: https://anarchapulco.com/ | Promo Code: MACROC60 Power: https://go.shopc60.com/PBGRT/KMKS9/ | Promo Code: MACROChemical Free Body: https://chemicalfreebody.com/macro/ | Promo Code: MACROWise Wolf Gold & Silver: https://macroaggressions.gold/ | (800) 426-1836LegalShield: www.DontGetPushedAround.com EMP Shield: www.EMPShield.com | Promo Code: MACROGround Luxe Grounding Mats: https://groundluxe.com/MACRO Christian Yordanov's Health Program: www.LiveLongerFormula.com/macro Above Phone: https://abovephone.com/macro/Van Man: https://vanman.shop/?ref=MACRO | Promo Code: MACROThe Dollar Vigilante: https://dollarvigilante.spiffy.co/a/O3wCWenlXN/4471 Nesa's Hemp: www.NesasHemp.com | Promo Code: MACROAugason Farms: https://augasonfarms.com/MACRO —
