Liminal Gallery Podcast host, Louise Fitzjohn, speaks with contemporary artist Olivia Strange, during her solo exhibition ‘It Softens The Blow, That Deep Melodic Bliss' in Liminal Gallery's Main Space, in Margate from 6 July until 31 August 2024. Pulling together the multifarious strands of Strange's practice "It Softens the Blow, That Deep Melodic Bliss" explores notions of escape and survival through snapshot moments of euphoria and pleasure, as an act of resistance. The work celebrates the freedom and intimacy found within singular moments in varying spaces from the domestic environment, the natural landscape to the rave scene, that offer a sense of safety to hold multiple truths simultaneously whilst providing a portal through which to explore identities away from the constraints of critical thought.Through themes of dis/embodiment, movement, touch and tenderness, healing and empowerment, connection and ‘belonging', Strange explores intimate moments in time that elicit a sense of escape and diversion from programmed ideas of self into altered states of consciousness and where emotions can be discharged in spaces and dimensions that provide transient moments of relief from the boundaries of day to day normative realities. Olivia Strange's multi-disciplinary practice spanning sculpture, painting, installation, moving image and poetry, is characterised by a layered narrative and highly visceral aesthetic. The work is concerned with disarming patriarchal descriptors via exploration of her Italian roots and draws on themes of Greco-Roman mythology, historical narratives around witches, the female body & jouissance to portray an empowering image of queer female subjectivity.Since graduating with Distinction from Chelsea College of Art- MA Fine Art (2017) having received the Vice Chancellor Scholarship, Strange has exhibited at Annka Kulty's Gallery presenting an ambitious large scale immersive installation as part of the inaugural Cacotopia show, Southwark Park Galleries, ArtOn Istanbul, Unit 1 Gallery, Liminal Gallery (Solo Show), Every Woman Biennial, Basis Projektraum and had a solo presentation at London Art Fair with Liminal Gallery in 2024.Strange was selected for the 2021 cohort of the SPACE Studios X London Creative Network Artist Development Programme and the Ellipsis Prints 2021 Commissioning Project and Shortlisted for the prestigious Ingram Collection Purchase Prize 2021. More recently Strange was selected for the Radical Residency 2022 at Unit 1 Gallery in London, longlisted for the Robert Walters UK New Artist Award 2022, co-curated the group exhibition ‘Bag, Pedestal, Rabbit, Potato' which centred around Ursula. K. Send us a textGary discovered the Alveston Gallery in Notting Hill, London, during his travels and was drawn to the work of Teddy Hansen, who was exhibiting at the time. After a conversation with Fergus Downey, the gallery owner, Gary arranged a Zoom meeting with Teddy to learn more about his practice. We're releasing this podcast just ahead of the London Art Fair, where the Alveston Gallery will be showcasing Teddy's work.In our conversation, Teddy shared insights into the influence of Danish culture on his art, his experiences as a young artist in London, and his exciting plans for the future.'Teddy Hansen's comically surreal wall-hangings celebrate the power of escapist art. Inspiring laughter and perplexity, he infuses natural imagery with absurd narrative to convey a wild sense of humour and a rampant obsession with frogs.Having studied at Falmouth and Leeds University, Hansen began his artistic journey with painting and embroidery before developing into the realm of rug-tufting. During the creation process, each piece follows a dream-like narrative which becomes increasingly complex as the work unfolds. Ultimately, it is this sense of unpredictability that fuels Hansen's vision, culminating in an immersive and arresting aesthetic.Above all, Hansen strives to emphasise the importance of humour and experimentation by encouraging audiences to take his rugs at face value. Instead of inspiring any kind of hidden notions, they are designed with the sole purpose of evoking joyful escapism.' - Alveston GalleryThanks for the chat, Teddy! We wish you all the best in your future.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Much of the work of Dublin-born Irish photographer Trish Morrissey is a study of the language of photography through still and moving images, using performance and wit as tools to investigate the boundaries of photographic meaning. Although most of Trish's work features her as the protagonist, she does not consider the photographs to be self portraits per se, though they can be read that way. She uses humour as a tool to disarm the viewer, hoping it wil then evaporate, leaving a slow burning psychologically tense afterglow. Weaving fact and fiction, Trish plunges into the heart of such issues as family experiences and national identities, feminine and masculine roles, and relationships between strangers. Her work has been exhibited widely, including in the shows ‘Landscape, Portrait: Now and Then' at the Hestercombe Gallery in 2021; ‘Who's Looking at the family now?' at the London Art Fair 2019 and in the solo show ‘Trish Morrissey: A certain slant of light' at the Francesca Maffeo Gallery in 2018 and most recently in 2022 he exhibition Trish Morrissey, Autofictions; Twenty Years of Photography and Film, at Serlachius Museum Gustaf, Finland. Her work is in the permanent collection of The Museum of Fine Art, Houston, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, The National Media Museum, Bradford and the Wilson Centre for Photography, London and was published in 2022 in the book Autofictions to coincide with the aforementioned exhibition in Finland. In episode 209, Trish discusses, among other things:Her recent retrospective and bookThe Front projectHer parents family albumReading pictures from body languageHer collaborative project with her daughterThe performative side of her practiceA Certain Slant of LightExploring the female experienceEarly lifeResidency in AustraliaWorking with videoReferenced:Andy GrundbergZed NelsonNicholas Nixon, Brown SistersKate BestMark HarriottHilary MantelDiane Arbus“Everything I've done, when I've looked back on it I've realised is actually trying things on. Art by women is literally undervalued. The highest price achieved by a contemporary female artist is $12.4m, while it is $91m for a man. If a painting is signed by a man it goes up in value, signed by a woman it goes down. We might expect this historically, but as the majority of art students today are women, why is there such a gender value gap now? To untangle this mystery, Mary Ann Sieghart enters a thrilling world of glitzy, high-stake auctions and make-or-break gallery decisions. She lifts the lid on the opaque world of art valuation, explores how punters react to genderless AI art, and uncovers historic collusion and contemporary bias. She asks if male artists are actually better than women and why, in the bible of the art world today, there is just one woman mentioned, as a footnote. Pinning down work being done to level this playing field, Mary Ann talks to the galleries showing more works by women, discovering powerful women shifting the attention and canny investors who are realising maybe it is just the right time to buy. Featured in the programme are: Frances Morris, director of Tate Modern; Prof of Finance, Renee Adams; from Sotheby's Helena Newman and Marina Ruiz Colomer; philanthropist Valeria Napoleone, Bellatrix Hubert from David Zwirner gallery; author Helen Gorrill, art curator Naomi Polonsky, and the London Art Fair. Michael breaks down how to know what's working and what's not in your work, and outlines in a step by step guide how to build relationships with galleries and get them to showcase your work! "Know that your time may not be now… and that’s okay. Artists work for years and decades and their moment isn’t quite yet. Stay with what you’re doing, develop it… stay true to who you are, stay true to the vision that you have, what you want to create, and keep working with that… Don’t change your work to assimilate into what’s going on right now… in the art world, by the time you catch up to it, it’ll all be over.”- Michael Foley Guest: Michael Foley opened his gallery in the fall of 2004 after fourteen years of working with notable photography galleries. The gallery has since been invited to participate in over twenty international and national art fairs including Paris Photo, Pulse, AIPAD and the London Art Fair. Foley continues his interest in educating by serving on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts and the International Center of Photography where he teaches and lectures on issues in contemporary photography.  He has been a portfolio reviewer at over 25 photography reviews throughout the United States. http://www.foleygallery.com/ (http://www.foleygallery.com/) Foley is the founder of The Photo Community, which is an online platform for people involved in various aspects of fine art photography. https://www.thephotocommunity.org/ (https://www.thephotocommunity.org/) For more information on applying to Superfine Art Fair as well as recordings of this and all of our past podcasts, just visit http://www.superfine.world/ (www.superfine.world ) IG: https://www.instagram.com/foleygallery/ (@foleygallery) Twitter: https://twitter.com/foleygallery (@foleygallery) IG:https://www.instagram.com/superfineartfair/?hl=en (@superfineartfair) Hosted and Executive Produced by James Miille and Alexander Mitow Executive Producer/ Producer: Kelsey Susino Written by: James Miille and Alexander Mitow Audio Edited by: Federico Soler Fernandez

In fact, she just enjoyed creating art because it made her feel good. As she continued to develop her style, she saw others smile too. Insua began to deepen her practice by finding meaning and purpose behind her creations. She began to show in a few exhibitions around Buenos Aires drawing more and more attention to her artistry. Utilizing discarded items that are no longer useful to a throw away society, she methodically creates new life in the found objects. For her most recent solo exhibition at the Appa Art Gallery in Madrid, Spain, Insua created a series based on western consumption and the backwards idea that things create happiness. Her work is both beautiful and tragic. Dazzling to behold, yet a stark reminder of our endless grasp at material bliss.
