You may have heard of the BRAIN Initiative, but in case not, BRAIN is is huge funding effort across many agencies, one of which is the National Institutes of Health, where this recent workshop was held. The BRAIN Initiative began in 2013 under the Obama administration, with the goal to support developing technologies to help understand the human brain, so we can cure brain based diseases. BRAIN Initiative just became a decade old, with many successes like recent whole brain connectomes, and discovering the vast array of cell types. Now the question is how to move forward, and one area they are curious about, that perhaps has a lot of potential to support their mission, is the recent convergence of neuroscience and AI... or NeuroAI. This Day in Legal History: US DOJ Files Suit Against AT&TOn November 20, 1974, the United States Department of Justice initiated one of the most significant antitrust actions in American history by filing a lawsuit against telecommunications giant AT&T. The case, United States v. AT&T, aimed to dismantle the company's monopoly over telephone services. AT&T, through its Bell System, controlled virtually all local and long-distance phone services in the United States, stifling competition and innovation in the rapidly evolving communications sector. The Justice Department argued that AT&T's dominance violated antitrust laws, particularly the Sherman Act, which prohibits monopolistic practices that harm consumers and market fairness.The case did not proceed to trial. This week, Victor Hwang talks about the remarkable road trip he recently completed in which he got a fresh perspective on the state of entrepreneurship across America. John is joined by Renny Hwang, Deputy General Counsel and Head of Litigation at OpenAI and former Head of Litigation at Google.  They discuss the legal issues surrounding AI technology.  Renny explains that he believes that existing law is well equipped to deal with copyright, fair use and product liability issues raised by AI, but the challenge the industry faces is that most people do not understand how AI works.  He also explains that he believes other legal issues, such as corporate transparency and governance, might require new regulations.  John and Renny discuss the likely impact of patent and trade secret law on the AI industry in light of the industry's tendency to publish significant research and findings.  They also discuss the effect of the absence of comprehensive federal AI regulation, including the difficulty companies have in to implementing different compliance regimes for different jurisdictions and the possibility that the European AI Act will become the de facto default standard for AI regulation globally.  Finally, Renny explains that OpenAI is a mission-driven company focused on building safe and beneficial AI and that commitment is reflected in OpenAI's Board-level Safety Committee.Podcast Link: Law-disrupted.fmHost: John B.
