Radio personality and aspiring cat owner, Kira Lew (@kiralewwho), has a knack for being her true self and encouraging others to do the same. Have you ever found yourself at the hair salon and all of a sudden you are divulging all kinds of personal sh*t to your stylist who you just met? Well, Kira's conversations with her guests are kind of like that. Except she doesn't give them a cool cape to wear.
Okay my little Matzah Balls, This episode of Therapodic starring Eitan Levine is AGGRESSIVELY Jewish but all inclusive at the same time (aka goyim are welcome) join me as I peel back the layers of this fascinating onion boy. Some fun pearls from the episode include:
Isn't nutrition so confusing?! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, What should we be eating to fuel our bodies? What should we be cutting out entirely (if anything)? Should we be fasting for part of the day? How are fad diets translated to mainstream media? Kira explores all of these topics and more with Anna Cataldo and Nicole Ninteau. Both of these incredible women poses deep scientific knowledge of metabolism, exercise physiology, and nutrition science. Together they founded Enriched Health with the goal of helping their clients maximize the quality and longevity of their lives by minimizing the confusion around nutrition science and facilitating impactful health behavior change. Check them out at Enriched.Health (no dot com. It's a thing!) Anna Roto Cataldo: MS, MPH, RD, has studied and worked in the nutrition and fitness fields for 14+ years. Her fascination with human metabolism and performance led her down a rigorous academic and clinical training path in biochemistry, exercise physiology and nutrition science. Anna’s goal is to share her knowledge and experiences in a way that helps others build confidence in and a sense of control over their health and well-being. Nicole Schultz Ninteau: PhD, MPH, CPT, embodies a rare combination of basic science and applied skills. Studying Human Biochemistry and Metabolism for over 12 years, Nicole simultaneously coached clients in fitness settings and taught students in academic settings. She has leveraged her deep scientific knowledge and communication skills to elevate students’ learning while leading clients to weight loss and improved eating habits. Laura Madaio is the founder and creator of “Grief Hungry” a curated space for grief suffers to share stories and recipes from their loved ones. Two years ago Laura lost her dad very suddenly and tragically. She learned first hand that grief is a non linear and complicated experience. It is all encompassing. It causes physical ailments as well as psychological ones. She learned which friends kept showing up to support her during this insufferable time. It opened her eyes to what society’s expectations are around grief and when you should be “done grieving”. (This is in quotes because you are never really done grieving) Also what is up with people getting so uncomfortable talking about death? It is no surprise there is such little empathy around loss and grief because we’re all too scared to talk about it. Laura talks about the changes that need to be made, how we can all be better grievers, and better support systems to those who are living with grief.Follow @griefhungry on Instagram and Facebook and submit recipes and stories at griefhungry@gmail.comFollow us at Therapodic on Instagram and Facebook and @Kiralewwho on the gram.
Shawn Olsten aka DJ Shawny-O has a brand new baby fresh out of the oven! He carved out some time to catch Kira up on what fatherhood has been like. (It's a great gig but you WILL get peed on) And OH MY LANTA don't get this man started on Disney princesses! He narrowed down which four princesses he deems worthy to be on the Mount Rushmore of Disney Princesses or as he calls it, "Mount Princessmore". He reached these results through methodical research and an in depth understanding of the background, motives, and character arcs of each princess. It's intense! And a little weird! Kira and Hassan went to high school together. Back then they didn't think they had much in common aside from a fiery passion for Pacsun and the band Brand New. But 15 YEARS LATER they connected on the pod and now it is clear they are kindred spirits. Hassan floated around in many circles in High School. He searched for people who would welcome an anxious Arab kid with IBS and a fondness for dick sandwiches with open arms. He lived what he felt like was a duel identity; an average American teenager during the week and a wicked Arab kid who would fast and pray on the weekends. Then after college, a traumatic event changed the trajectory of Hassan's life. He turned to drugs and alcohol to cope and had some pretty dark years. This gave him a ton of perspective and an incredible story to share. This episode is wild ride! If you're wondering where Kira get's the gumption to be 100% herself 100% of the time, it's best to go straight to the woman who raised her. Mama Lew has no secrets especially after this episode! Never feeling black enough or white enough is a complicated existence. When Emily Collins was younger, calling her the “whitest black girl” you knew was taken as a compliment. Growing up in a town with very little diversity, she surrounded herself with white friends and admits that she even shied away from black people. But, what began as her identity crisis transformed her into a bridge between two worlds. She was kind enough to open her big beautiful soul to me and I am thankful for her honesty and graciousness. We get into everything from being the default Scary Spice, to the larger social and political injustices happening right now. Despite the fact that Band-Aids are finally making a shade of bandage that matches her skin tone (100 years after they were invented) racial equality is still very far in the distance. We have some serious work to do. And by we, I mean white people.
