Rugby YouTube star Huw Griffin makes a rapid return back to The 8-9 Combo Rugby Podcast with Brett McKay & Harry Jones, as the fallout from the Champions Cup Final celebrations continue. Zebra-related injuries are not something a team typically plans for, but may feature in reviews of Bordeaux's European campaign. From there, the URC moves into knockout mode, with Quarter Finals to be played in Scotland, South Africa, and Ireland this weekend, and with upsets possible in one, maybe two games at a stretch. Super Rugby Pacific and the Premiership line up for their final rounds of the season, and with most games having some degree of bearing on playoff berths. Plus, it's the penultimate round of Top 14 in France and MLR in the States, and Grand Final weekend in Japan. The Lions Squad Announcements is almost here, the Champions Cup is saved (hoo-RAH!), and rugby YouTube star Huw Griffin joins Brett McKay & Harry Jones on The 8-9 Combo Rugby Podcast to celebrate the best of British and forget about everything we hated before the semi-final stage. Last episode having offered his rapid reactions in the hours after President Trump's tariff announcement, on Friday 4 April Darren was joined by Dr. Huw Mackay to talk through the economics and financial market angles, a full day after the tariff announcement. How did markets react and what might that tell us about the days and weeks ahead? How will companies be thinking about these events, and what advice would Huw offer to governments around the world on how they ought to manage this policy challenge? Huw, a former Chief Economist at BHP, offers a vital perspective from the private sector on big questions not just of economics but of geopolitics and foreign policy. Fair warning: the first part of the discussion is extremely wonky, but nevertheless essential, because understanding the potential macroeconomic impacts of these tariffs is a precondition for analysing their impact on geopolitics and the international economic order. Australia in the World is written, hosted, and produced by Darren Lim, with research and editing this episode by Walter Colnaghi and theme music composed by Rory Stenning. In this episode on why players, parents and coaches should absolutely think about what strings they put in their rackets, the Pro Tour stringer Huw Phillips who runs RacketSpec says:‘You wouldn't buy rubbish tyres and put it on a Formula 1 car. It's the same with a tennis racket - it's the strings that hit the ball'He explains that you can make a £100 racket play ten times better by having it professionally restrung with decent strings and you can make a £300 racket play awful by having it strung badly. What's more the strings you have in your racket could result in you or your player sustaining injury if they use strings which aren't right for them. So what are you waiting for? Dive in and find out what it's like to be a Pro Stringer, what strings you should be using on your racket, what the different tensions mean and why a light racket isn't necessarily the way to go for young players.Ladies and gentleman, over to Huw Phillips to tell you all you need to know about tennis strings and tennis restringing. It's another week and how could we not see the drama coming out of Hollywood this week. There has been less press from Disney and their live action release of Snow White than we realized. Might have something to do with some of the issues Nate brings up. This takes us down to a rabbit hole of Vin Diesel which was a film review Huw wasn't prepared for. Sam fills us in on the new rides over at Universal. Then we look into the festival season coming soon. Somehow the lineup of Lollapalooza. Today's Big Stuff is a Monday through Friday newsletter for progressive Americans who want to save their democracy while making fun of people like Donald Trump Jr. and Lauren Boebert who might actually be the same, really dumb person. . Today's Big Stuff (TBS) was founded in early 2019 by “Ready for Hillary” creator and Democratic strategist Adam Parkhomenko and former White House correspondent and veteran campaign reporter Sam Youngman. What started as a small clip service for six people, quickly expanded as thousands of stressed out Americans searched for a news source that tells it how it is — with lots of sick jokes and cuss words. In 2020, the more than 75,000 members of the Big Stuff community — also known as Sexy Patriots and Big Stufferinoes — mobilized along with 81 million other Americans to send Donald Trump crying back to Mar-a-Lago leaving a trail of urine along the way. And we're just getting started. If laughter is the best medicine, then TBS is like an injection of bleach right to the fucking face. In an era where “economic security is national security”, arguably the most important perspective in how governments ought to intervene in the economy--in ways to maximise benefits and minimise costs--is that of the private sector. With that in mind, Darren welcomes Dr Huw McKay to the podcast to hear a business perspective on the economic security agenda and geoeconomics. Huw has just returned to Australia after living in Singapore for many years where he worked as Chief Economist at BHP. Prior to that he was an Executive Director at Westpac Bank and also spent time at the Commonwealth Treasury on secondment during the financial crisis. He holds a PhD in economics and economic history from ANU and his book, The Strategic Logic of China's Economy, was published this year. The agenda for this conversation will be familiar to those thinking about economic security – how do we define it, is it simply all about China, what principles should guide industrial policy, how do we manage the weaponisation of supply chains and chokepoints, how can we counter economic coercion, and how can the rules-based order be preserved? As the Australian government builds out its “Future Made in Australia” agenda, this is exactly the type of conversation that is needed to inform the debate. Australia in the World is written, hosted, and produced by Darren Lim, with research and editing this episode by Walter Colnaghi and theme music composed by Rory Stenning. With the rest of the month be a lead in to the possible fall of society we've got some distraction for you this week, hopefully. The start of the show is why we should not leave Nate and Huw alone on the pod. Those two got into the randomness of sports teams and their names. We dive into the Cheeto and the recent townhall and rallies this past weekend. Who knew it was normal to dance in one place for 39 minutes. Nothing to see there as we dive into the prep for Halloween and the costumes that we need. Somehow we found ourselves going on about Taylor Swift costumes into Vanessa Carlton and Trent Reznor. Didn't see that path in our trajectory at the start of recording. Take an odd turn into celebrities and the idea of open marriages. It's all in all an odd one today. So enjoy, be safe and catch you next week.
Thoughts on the episode? Let us know.Over the years I've had the privilege of supporting thousands of people to make changes in their lives:entrepreneurs sharpening their focus and implementing their action plansexecutives growing their leadership and influence chopsregular folks adopting healthy habits and uprooting self-sabotaging impulsesAnd I like to think that the net effect of all those individual changes is a more global shift, as the ripples extend beyond my clients to their families, organizations, communities, and the world. But that's different from engineering large-change scale from the get-go.And heaven knows, the human species could really use some transformation at scale at the present moment, if we are to survive on a livable planet for much longer. So I reached out to change expert Huw Thomas to explore the keys to behavior change at scale. In our conversation, we cover Huw's three keys to change:leadershipmanagementgovernanceWe dig into empathy, resistance, adaptability, and influence, and a bunch of other buzzwords that actually contain real nuggets of wisdom. And we talk about our own journeys of change, and the obstacles we've created, faced, and overcome.Enjoy!LinksHuwThomas.com.auMaximum Achievement, by Brian TracyThe Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen R CoveyLeading with Emotional Courage, by Peter BregmanClick to subscribe to the Mindset Mastery Memo.Support the show
ConVic, Victoria's largest event has been run and won. And while the world is going crazy about command dice and the Clash of Kings tournament in the UK, Direct Misfire has been joined by old mate Huw one more time to run through the highlights & results of ConVic 24. This will be the last time with Huw in the intro as we turn a page with Andrew. Its only fitting Huw is here to forget unit names and special rules one last time with the intro tunes.
Welcome back to the madness that is What HPND 2US. Sam lets the duo of Nate and Huw run the ship, which only ends up in circles and down rabbit holes. The big drop from the week was the recent announcement from Oasis. We take that and go into the idea of gatekeeping. Somehow JLo finds her way into the conversation, which puts us into the world capitals and the breaking down of the Soviet Union. Let's be honest we're going on a weird ride this week in conversation and this might be a residual effect from a couple of weeks back. Stay safe out there folks and talk to you next week.
