Podcast 330 - Dunwoody Tavern is Bringing Back their Dunwoody Beer Fest as Tunes and Taps - Huw Thomas & Miguel Romero Huw Thomas has been running pubs in Dunwoody longer than most of us have lived here, and Miguel Romero of Taqueria Los Hermanos has become one of the most beloved anchors at the Shops of Dunwoody. Together, they're bringing back a Dunwoody tradition that drew thousands of people a year over more than a decade. And it's happening May 30. Huw's story is one of my favorites. He moved here just before the 1996 Olympics, looked around at a neighborhood with nowhere to grab a beer and a burger, and decided to fix that. That became Dunwoody Tavern. Thirty years later, Dunwoody Restaurant Group has five active locations across metro Atlanta, and Huw has had buildings named after his company at Camp Twin Lakes because of a 30-year fundraising partnership with the charity. Tunes & Taps is the new version of the Dunwoody Beer Fest, and it's going down May 30 from 4 to 10pm at the Shops of Dunwoody. Your $20 gets you in the door, live music from Mike Veal Band and the Basement Band, great food, and a raffle for $3,000 in DRG gift cards. Every dollar from ticket sales goes directly to Camp Twin Lakes, and 20% of Dunwoody Tavern's sales that day go to the charity too. Chair: Evelina Grecenko, senior reporter Speakers: Huw Davies, partner head of ESG, Jones Hargreaves Today, the most successful assets aren't just "green"; they are commercially resilient, high-performing spaces that occupiers actually want to inhabit. In this episode, recorded at UKREiiF, we sit down with Huw Davies, head of ESG at Jones Hargreaves, to challenge the traditional view of sustainability. Huw argues for a shift in language and mindset: moving away from the narrow lens of ESG toward the broader, more strategic framework of responsible investment. We'll explore why investors are no longer looking for minimal compliance, but for a clear return on their social and environmental capital. As occupiers demand more flexibility, better amenities and authentic placemaking, the buildings that thrive will be those that treat these demands as commercial opportunities rather than overhead costs. Reflecting on recent projects, from the heritage-sensitive retrofitting of York's historic assets to the delivery of high-spec ESG-led refurbishments in Central London, Huw shares how Jones Hargreaves is bridging the gap between "doing good" and "doing business”. This is a conversation about how the buildings of tomorrow are being built on the responsible investment decisions of today.
New Jon and Huw join Big M to trawl through the waste pipe of Round 18 in search of something to smile about before the end of the season. Even though the game was the equivalent of two fish arguing over a clowns nose - it still had its talking points and falls yet again into the 'Should have won' category. And then there is community stuff. #Scarlets #Welshrugby #URCgo #WRU Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
It's a week and a delay with an episode... We can blame Huw for that. There's a moment of old man yelling at clouds to start the show. We dive in to the controversy of the newest Nolan film the Odyssey. Which takes us down a little Nolan rabbit hole of its own. Let's get political with the recent mayoral primary hitting with a new reality figure running for office. Let's just say the grift is strong with that character. Hopefully everyone is staying safe out there and we'll catch you later in the week.

Send us Fan MailHappy Beltane to those that celebrate, here's an extra episode to welcome those longer days that are on the way. It's an extended interview with author and broadcaster Zakia Sewell about the journeys and discoveries that make up Finding Albion, her search for another Britain. Born out of her 2020 radio 4 series (My Albion) - it is a rejection of a narrow and exclusionary vision of Englishness in favour of a unifying sense of national identity. Centred around the wheel of the year and a pursuit that took Zakia the length and breadth of our island Finding Albion is as much an exploration of our shared colonial past as it is the weird and wonderful folk customs and traditions that continue to bind our communities together. What emerges is a (much needed) hopeful vision of our future and the offer to pursue a deeper sense of who we are.'Hopeful and Inspiring' - Caroline Lucas'Finding Albion offers up much-needed alternative national identities and stories for us to keep close and cherish. A timely book' - Jeremy Deller. Huge thanks to Huw Marc Bennett and the mighty Albert's Favourites for the use of Huw's music. In this episode of Critical Thinking, Amit Popat is joined by Andreas Vermeiren and Huw van Steenis to explore the rapid rise of asset-backed finance (ABF) and its role in modern portfolios. The discussion examines the drivers behind ABF's recent momentum, as banks retrench and institutional investors, particularly insurers, seek long-duration, stable cash flows. It also highlights the growing role of non-bank capital and the increasing importance of selectivity as the asset class scales. While ABF offers compelling growth potential, success hinges on disciplined credit underwriting and a clear understanding of its role within a broader portfolio. GOODBYE SEASON THREE!Our time in the 1990's comes to an end, and we wrap up the decade in the company for the one-and-only Mr Ian Abrahams, esteemed author of “Hawkwind: Sonic Assassins”, which has been such a huge resource for us on our Hawkbinge journey. We have a fun, sprawling chat about all things Hawkwind in the 90's and each select our favourite ‘orphan tracks' from the decade: those songs (or versions of songs) that didn't make it onto a studio album. We then get deep in the most excellent things Ian has been up to since last we spoke, including his writing for the Hawkwind edition of Record Collector last year, and his help with the marvellous book by Marion Lloyd-Langton about Huw's life, and her life with him. We heartily recommend seeking that one out.We also unveiled the lucky winner of the competition set on the last episode, and if that's you then expect to hear from us very soon! Many thanks to Ian, always great to chat Hawkwind with him :)The boutique Hawkbinge t-shirt collection from Skull Print is here All Hawkbinge proceeds will be donated to The British Bee Charity

Rugby YouTube star and wonderful content creator Huw Griffin is back with Brett McKay on 8/9 Rugby this week, to wrap up what has been universally decreed as the best Six Nations tournament ever. Ultimately, France claimed a successive title by beating England in the final game, but oh the drama to get there! And the subplots from this year's tournament are endless: England's worst ever Six Nations, Scotland's close-but-maybe-still-so-far challenge, the rise of Italy, the life still in old Irish legs, and event the gradual but definite progress of Wales. This episode is a recording from the Start Network's Assembly, which took place in October 2025. Lars Peter Nissen was invited to moderate a panel exploring what leadership looks like when success is contingent on the agency of others — when you cannot exercise direct control but must inspire, build rapport, and create the conditions for a group of individuals to deliver results.Rather than drawing on leaders from within the humanitarian sector, the panel brings together professionals from two very different fields — football management and musical theatre — to explore what their craft can teach humanitarians about leading through networks, trust, and collective action.Note: This episode was recorded live at the Start Network Assembly. The sound quality reflects the live setting.GuestsNatalie Brown: Board Director at Banbury United Football Club and the first Black female board member in UK football. Natalie has a background in media, marketing, and community development, and has worked with Arsenal, The Prince's Trust, and Mind. She founded the #PlayBrave initiative to help women build confidence on and off the pitch.Huw Evans: Associate Musical Director on Oliver at the Gielgud Theatre in London's West End. Huw is an accomplished conductor and multi-instrumentalist who has worked on shows including Much Ado About Nothing, Sunset Boulevard, Oklahoma, and Come From Away. He trained at King's College London.Moderated by Lars Peter Nissen, Director of ACAPS and host of Trumanitarian. Introduced by Lucy Puentes of the Start Network.Key ThemesBuilding from the ground up: Natalie shares how she rebuilt Banbury United's women's team after inheriting a fractured setup where the manager had left just before the season. After a disheartening first attempt, she “flipped the script” — launching open training sessions for women over 40, which rapidly grew into a multigenerational squad with players aged 16 to 66. Her approach centred on changing the narrative, leading with spirit, and building a movement rather than just a team. The duet between leading and following: Huw describes conducting as a constant negotiation between setting the tempo and following the performer. With 12 musicians split across three separate spaces, a 30-person cast, and four child actors rotating in the lead role, he conducts via camera monitors — relying on connection, adaptability, and trust rather than direct control. Leadership in live performance, he says, is about creating the conditions for harmony rather than forcing it.Trust, small gestures, and knowing people's namesBoth panellists emphasise that trust is built through small, consistent actions. Huw takes pride in greeting every deputy musician before the show. Natalie describes how players joined her team simply because they liked who she was and what she stood for. Both draw a direct parallel to humanitarian coordination — where leading a cluster meeting of 50 strangers via camera is not so different from conducting an orchestra through a monitor.Releasing control: A recurring theme throughout the conversation is the difficulty — and necessity — of letting go. Huw describes the terrifying moment of relinquishing control in a live performance with 2,000 people watching. Natalie reflects on having built the women's team so personally that she now needs to step back and let others carry the vision. Both see this as essential to sustainable leadership in networked settings. The power of diversity and emergence: Lars Peter draws the conversation toward metaphor, arguing that biology — not physics — offers the better model for thinking about networks. The emergent quality of a network, like a heart pumping blood from cells and valves, produces outcomes that are qualitatively different from the sum of the parts. Just as a football team needs more than 11 goalkeepers, or an orchestra more than 12 horn players, humanitarian networks need genuine diversity of skills and perspectives.Resilience and learning from mistakes: Huw shares a candid story of pressing the wrong button during a click track, causing pre-recorded and live children to sing out of sync. His advice: pick yourself up, stay calm, and keep going with integrity. Natalie talks about the power of small daily steps — just 15 minutes of focused effort each day — as a way to sustain momentum when things feel overwhelming.CreditsHost: Lars Peter NissenRecorded at: Start Network Assembly, October 2025Session title: Choreographing Chaos: Leadership in a World of NetworksPanel introduced by: Lucy Puentes, Start NetworkGet in touch: info@truemanitarian.orgSupport the podcast: Visit truemanitarian.org and click “Support the Pod”

Change rarely fails because people don't care; it fails because we misunderstand what drives behavior. With author and change leadership expert Huw Thomas, we dig into the real forces underneath stalled transformations: loss aversion, identity threats, and the quiet stories we tell ourselves that keep us clinging to the status quo. From childhood curiosity to adult routines, we unpack how our wiring prioritizes safety, why we catastrophize the unlikely, and how a few practical shifts can restore agency and momentum.Huw shares a candid look at navigating personal and professional change—moving countries, facing a health crisis, and reframing setbacks as stepping stones. We explore the messy middle of change and the identity tension it creates, including the classic “expert with the legendary spreadsheet” who resists a new system because it threatens who they are at work. Instead of erasing the old self, we talk about upgrading to version 2.0: preserving dignity, building new capability, and making the future identity feel real through micro-wins, visibility, and support. You'll learn concrete tools: pattern interrupts to test assumptions, emotional labeling to reduce intensity, future-self framing to re-anchor perspective, and success mapping that pairs a vivid destination with the true cost of inaction. We also preview why organizational change is so hard—scale, diversity, influence networks—and why technology and processes don't create value until humans believe they can, want to, and know how to use them. If you're ready to stop focusing on barriers and start steering toward the gaps, this conversation offers a clear, humane roadmap. If this sparked an insight, share it with one person who needs it, hit subscribe on your favorite podcast app or YouTube, and leave a review to help more leaders find the show. What's one small behavior you'll change this week, and what support will make it stick?

It's another week of surviving the madness that is life. It's been a bit of a rough week for a few people. Including Sydney Sweeny and Glen Powell who didn't have the results they were wishing for over the weekend. We take a moment to look into the recent splitting of a party. Which takes us to the recent vote from today. We go into the history of a few movies and Huw spews a bit of hate towards Rose in the Titanic. Sam gets to go to Alcatraz for the first time. And a few other random tales from the day. Hopefully everyone is keeping the sanity today. Be safe out there.
We're in a little rush today as Nate and Huw dive down the rabbit holes of conversation. We take a quick look into the hikes of insurance coming. Nate's planning on making a change with phones. Just to watch the world burn. We go into a little sports talk from the World Series to the rivals of Stefi Graf and Serena Williams. Finally find ourselves looking at some weird box offices as the biopic world is making a shift from the looks of things. Hopefully everyone is staying safe out there and we'll catch you next week.
First up, we're joined by stand-in interim temporary agency co-host Melanie Ellis of Northridge Law fame, and we talk a bit about things in the UK. Mel luckily brings her brand of common sense to the table, which is definitely an area Jon is lacking [0:00 – 29:24]. We get into the social impact of tax hikes for the UK industry, among many other things – including the revelation that Melanie is no longer baking pastries. I KNOW RIGHT.Then we're joined by the genuinely excellent Huw Thomas of Recovery in Gaming. Jon revels in the chance to speak to a fellow addict and they get into what a good support network means for people, and how Huw's growing organisation can support people in the industry at events, conferences and the like. Huw also points out that with a bit of funding, they can help a lot more people… Huw is, as ever, candid and frank in conversation [29:25 – 1:13:47]. It's all well worth a listen.Huw Thomas on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/huwowenthomas/As ever, we thank all of our sponsors for their vibrant and excellent support. They are truly the Mad Max: Fury Road, to our Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. In no particular order they are: the mighty EveryMatrix – the industry go-to for sportsbook platforms and data feeds. EveryMatrix's coverage is so damn good, they're gaining tier-1 operators all the time. If I had to fight to the death in a weird, muddy amphitheatre in a dystopian future, I'd want these guys with me.Optimove, who turn customer data into something special, with tools that make businesses just plain work better. Optimove, your support helps us make things that are like the sacred gasoline – of DATA!!! Then of course there is Clarion Gaming, providers of the magnificent ICE expo (January '26 in Barcelona) and iGB Live! in London. Yeah, the show where there is that guy shooting all fire out the end of his guitar which he's playing on the roof of a truck. We love you guys infinity plus one. Navigating Digital Transformation in Construction: Expert Insights from Huw Roberts, CEO of PMWEBThe construction industry is evolving at a critical pace—balancing traditional processes with the rise of AI, automation, and digital transformation. In this episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur, host Josh Elledge sits down with Huw Roberts, CEO of PMWEB, to discuss how construction firms can modernize operations, improve efficiency, and adopt outcome-driven technology strategies. Huw shares actionable insights for leaders navigating uncertainty, highlighting the need for clear goals, practical innovation, and consistent learning to build resilient, future-ready organizations. The Digital Shift in ConstructionThe construction industry is one of the largest in the world but also among the slowest to digitize. Huw Roberts explains that while many sectors have embraced automation and AI, much of construction still depends on manual workflows, spreadsheets, and outdated systems. This creates inefficiencies that technology can help solve—if applied with purpose.Huw stresses that digital transformation isn't about adopting the latest tool; it's about aligning technology with specific outcomes. Whether the goal is faster project delivery, better collaboration, or improved forecasting, success starts with defining measurable results and working backward from there. Companies should begin with small pilot projects, gather feedback, and scale successful initiatives across the organization.Ultimately, balancing innovation with caution is essential. Large enterprises can absorb the risks of experimentation, while small and mid-sized businesses must focus on clear returns. By adopting an outcome-focused mindset and continuously learning from both wins and failures, construction firms can achieve meaningful transformation without sacrificing stability.About Huw RobertsHuw Roberts is the CEO of PMWEB, where he leads a global team dedicated to transforming how organizations plan, manage, and deliver construction and real estate projects. With a background in architecture and decades of experience in technology leadership, Huw bridges design, innovation, and business strategy to help clients improve performance and embrace the digital future of project management.About PMWEBPMWEB is a leading enterprise software platform that streamlines construction and real estate portfolio management. Designed for performance and transparency, PMWEB equips organizations with the tools to manage costs, schedules, and outcomes through data-driven decision-making. Host Jamie Lyall speaks to Huw Jones fresh from starting all three Test matches on the British & Irish Lions' tour of Australia. Joining Huw is Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Decade Gareth Reid. We waited a day and nothing major happened in the world from the looks of things. Thankfully Sam was able to make it out and fill us in on the Oasis concert. Nate and Huw dove down a rabbit hole or two to start the show. Thankfully we had the jump in that pulled us out of the madness. Hopefully everyone is staying safe out there as we try and keep up with the world.
When someone speaks with a deep of understanding of the banking and finance systems, is widely respected, and then expresses a strong but debatable view, about a developing asset class, we think it's important to hear that voice and to challenge and distil its key messages. So in this episode we welcome back a former guest who appeared on the MMP in March 2023 during the banking storm, during with Silicon Valley Bank and then Credit Suisse. His conclusion was unequivocally that this was no repeat of the 2008 GFC, as has been proven. In addressing his recent report from Oliver Wyman, titled “private credit is reshaping wealth portfolios”, we wanted to challenge him on several issues, including; Is it that innocuous? Is this a trend which will serve big private asset firms at the expense of individuals? How about bad times and souring loans? Does the loss of liquidity matter? Are we swapping risks from the regulated banking sector to the unregulated world of the giant private market firms? And so Huw and I face off in a discussion on the risks and opportunities that are the hallmarks of this fast-growing slice of the investing world. Holidays pop up and Huw completely forgets he's taking a week off. So apologies for that on my end. We dive into the recent nuptials of one of our hosts. We then go down the haunting of the Queen Mary as well as a few other special items. Somehow a rabbit hole takes us into the world of comedy. Marc Maron is on a heater going after everyone and anyone. We find our way into the newest hot topic of male cheerleaders. This will lead us into the battle of the Chrises and RFK jr taking some shots. Finally there are new words coming to the dictionary and we're surprised but not shocked with the results. Hopefully everyone is keeping it together in the madness out there, stay safe.

On 21 July, the opera world lost one of its finest tenors, David Rendall, at the age of 76. Rendall began his career in the mid-seventies as a lyric tenore di grazia specializing in bel canto and in the music of Mozart. His voice expanded and deepened over the years to encompass French roles (Des Grieux, Faust, Werther), 19th century Italian repertoire from Rodolfo to Otello, and finally Wagner roles from Lohengrin to Tristan. This episode explores his origins from his earliest recordings made before he ever considered a career in music, to live operatic recordings made between 1975 and 2006. Rendall's family was a deeply musical one: his wife, Diana Montague, is a legendary mezzo-soprano, and their son Huw Montague Rendall is one of the brightest lights in the present-day operatic firmament. The episode includes Rendall singing song cycles by Britten and Schubert, and operatic rarities by Rossini and Alfano. In all of the music offered, David Rendall's impeccable technique, patrician musicianship, and deep expressive connection to the music are heard to full effect. His memory will surely be a blessing to all who knew, heard, loved, and admired him. Many thanks to Huw for his advice in the preparation of this episode.
