Addiction: The hardest thing for a young black man is purpose.

Taivy sits down to have a candid discussion with her father, Ivan about Addiction. He tackles the nature of his own addiction and experience with substance abuse through tales filled with pain and funny lessons to be learned for over 20 years. Today’s episode highlights just how fast one bad decision can lead to another. How impulse can cost you precious time and memories. But for those fortunate enough to survive the consequences of their actions (prison, overdoses, violence etc) and make it through to the other side deserve acknowledgement of their journey and more. In many ways, Ivan is as much a victim to his vice as he has been a perpetrator of his choices. Now, for the first time he is able to open up about his life and tell his truth to the world free of judgement. Taivy takes the time to learn more about the man who was in and out of her life for 2 decades and piece together moments in time that were always a mystery. This episode was recorded on March 27th, 2021- Just shy of 2 weeks to the day that our community lost DMX. He was someone who represented truth and defined the culture at a time where authenticity reigned supreme in music. For Ivan, DMX was a beacon of veracity. Unapologetic and imperfect but he knew the value of his craft. Addiction is a disease of the mind that can manifest in many forms. Unfortunately, Earl Simmons’ story has come to an end but that does not mean the discussion around drugs and addiction has to as well. Now is the perfect time to open up the dialogue surrounding pain, coping, escapism and more. The black community has a lot of work to do when it comes to supporting our people and breaking out of vicious cycles. Listen in on today’s episode as Taivy and her father discuss his life, near death experiences and his opinion on New York State FINALLY legalizing cannabis. Politics, economics, and society as a whole. TR!BE is a socially conscious and black owned brand positioned to lift up black culture through voice and thought.
