Michael and Millie Shipe grew up in the era of “purity culture.” It was a big thing for about 20 years starting in the 1990s, and it focused on saving sex for marriage. There were conferences and purity rings and slogans, like “True Love Waits.”But a lot of people say they've been deeply damaged by their experience in purity culture. There's a growing genre of books by the “survivors” of purity culture. These are often bitter tales written by ex-evangelicals who use the term “deconstruction” to describe leaving orthodox Christianity.Today on Doubletake, the rise and fall of purity culture, through the eyes of a couple who lived through some of its best features–and some of its worst. And, just a note: this episode involves relationships and sexuality. It's not for kids.Music/audio from:CNNSouth Park/Comedy Central“Kiss the Girl” by Samuel E. Hannah Lee knew early on that life inside of her Korean American church was far too restrictive for her. And even though she felt that church life was deeply embedded into life as a Korean American, she saw its limitations as a curious, passionate person who valued art and people outside of the church. From her mom trying to exercise demons who would have her buy ski pants (true story) to the damage of purity culture in the 90's, Hannah broke free in early adulthood and has carved out a life outside. She found queer community and art to replace Christianity and Purity Culture even as she continues to find ways to connect to her family. Hello everyone! On this podcast, I (Jonathan Jenkins) am sharing a sermon I preached to my church. This sermon is a summary of a month's worth of teaching True Love Waits to the youth at my church. There is a lot that is covered and many questions that are answered regarding this issue. I start out by talking about what TRUE love is, what kind of relationships do we have, etc. Then I get into the topic of sex and how God through His word deals with that issue. Finally, I summarize with a response for the Gospel. This is a much needed message today to clear up many misunderstandings and abuses found within the sexual culture that we live in. This is one of those topics where we need to stand firm on the Word of God as Christians! What is sin and what does God allow? Well, we need to find the principles in the Bible that make this very clear! Find out what the Bible says about all of this in this week's episode of Grace Bond Ministries! I am a child of the 90s, and I vividly remember going to a True Love Waits rally where the speaker held up beautiful rose and slowly began tearing its petals off one by one until there was nothing but an ugly stump left. Of course, this was meant to illustrate what happens to our hearts when we choose to give ourselves away over and over before marriage, but there was always something about that image that didn't sit well with me. Why? Because it completely leaves out God's ability to redeem and restore things that are dead. Many people who were influenced by this message have come forward saying it hurt them more than it helped them. Because of that, I wanted to take a deep look at how it has affected us as women, and what the true message of the Bible is about purity...so we can teach our children what's true and good, and so that we can find healing if we need it. Join me and my special guest, Francie Winslow, as we talk about: The good and bad things that came from the purity movement of the 90s. What the Bible actually says about purity. We're going to cover a lot of territory over the life of this series–and with this episode we're going to start with a question; what was it that you learned about sex during the most formative years of your life? Because whether you realize it or not, this can greatly shape how you approach sex as an adult. Maybe you've been unraveling what it is you think about sex, how you think about your body, what sex means to you–and you're tracing it back to what you learned as teenager or young adult–and maybe that education wasn't positive. To help guide us through making those connections to our early sexual education and how we view sex today is therapist Jay Stringer–returning for his second appearance on the show. Jay pulls back the curtain on the teachings many of us got about sex when we were young. Even if you never were a part of movements like “True Love Waits,” or received lessons on purity culture by your church, or other religious organizations–perhaps there was a rigid sexual space in the childhood home you grew up in. We're speaking to all the ways sex might have been presented to us with messages of shame.  Jay encourages us to look at our sexual stories, seeking ways to find healing and wholeness toward a healthy view of sex. And bonus–for you parents who find talking about sex with your kids akin to a slow, painful death, Jay and Jen talk through ways can engage our kids around sex without the shame approach that a lot of us experienced, and to have those conversations in a loving, age-appropriate way by being open and responsive.   Content Warning: This episode talks extensively about sex, sexuality, and unwanted sexual behaviors, so it may not be suitable for young listeners.    Series Description Y'all. It's time to talk about it. The good, the bad, the ugly, the dramatic, the hilarious. That's right–we're talking about relationships. As Jen dips her toes back in the dating world post-divorce, what better time to call in the experts? For many of us grown adults who haven't dated in a thousand years, the methods have changed, the rules have changed (swipe left anyone?) and we're clueless where to start. And for those of you have been in the mix of it for awhile, you'll still find something new to learn in these conversations that run the gamut  from sex, to matchmaking, to finding love in this new world order. We'll also talk about what to do when your kids start dating, how to navigate the apps (RIP to our sanity), and what to do if you don't want to be single, and if you do, how to find the maximum satisfaction out of going it solo.  We'll chat with experts, friends, mentors, leaders–basically the people who have the receipts to give us the goods on what healthy relationships look like and how to nurture and build them to what they need to be. Because at the end of the day, good relationships with ourselves and others are what makes life sweeter.   * * * Thank you to our sponsors!   Betterhelp | Head to betterhelp.com/forthelove to get 10% off your first month.    Liquid IV | Get 25% off your order at liquidiv.com using code FORTHELOVE at checkout.    Faith MeCourse | Reconnect to your faith today at mecourse.org!  Thought-Provoking Quotes “If you hate your sexual desire, and you are militantly trying to stop it, you are going to develop a very severe and harmful theology, and that's exactly what happened in purity culture.” – Jay Stringer    “I've seen the purity culture really affect women in three particular ways. I would say that it deprioritizes women's sexual pleasure. It set women up for sexual violation. Then, the third, is that it contributed to sexual pain.”  – Jay Stringer    “I think one of the greatest myths out there is that you can't change your past. In some ways, the past is far easier to change than the future, in that you can go back to that scared, adolescent girl, and you can begin to mother her. You can ask her, ‘what are the things that you wish that you would have known back in the day?'”  – Jay Stringer    “When we don't have language for what we're experiencing or what we're coming out of, we aren't going to have language to be able to create a new sexual world, so we've got to educate ourselves. We've got to get into community and start talking through this stuff in order to rewrite our sexual script.”  – Jay Stringer    “For a seed to grow, it has to transgress the seed casing, and the root has to go down in order for the shoot to go up, and so that sense of our children need to transgress the boundaries, in some ways, that we have created, in order for them to individuate, to be able to grow. We don't want to create soil that does not allow them to transgress the boundaries of childhood. We want to allow some of that transgression to grow. I think that begins by inviting them to consider like, what do you want your own sexual story to look like?”  – Jay Stringer    “View sexual difficulties as a stage to be able to rewrite your story.”  – Jay Stringer   Jay's LinksWebsite Facebook Instagram Twitter    Books & Resources Mentioned in This EpisodeUnwanted: How Sexual Brokeness Reveals Our Way to Healing - Jay Stringer Addressing Broken Sexual Behavior with Jay Stringer - For the Love Podcast Episode  The Great Sex Rescue: The Lies You've Been Taught and How to Recover What God Intended - Sheila Gregoire  Come As You Are: Revised and Updated: The Surprising New Science That Will Transform Your Sex Life - Emily Nagoski  Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less - Greg McKeown Dr. Dan Allender  Connect with Jen!Jen's website Jen's InstagramJen's Twitter Jen's FacebookJen's YouTube

Purity culture is a phrase that described an evangelical movement in the 90's and 2000's which promoted the biblical view of sexual purity & to combat premarital sex for Christian teens. There were many popular resources that were introduced like “True Love Waits” and Joshua Harris's Best Seller, I Kissed Dating Goodbye as leading resources and programs. Unfortunately, it affected many young Christians when it comes to biblical purity. Come join the guys as they talk about Purity Culture.

“We eroticize our pain to make sense of it. We sexualize our brokenness.” - Andrew BaumanOn this edition of Restoring the Soul, Michael welcomes Andrew Bauman, author of The Sexually Healthy Man. Now, you may have grown up in the 90's during the height of the True Love Waits movement, accompanied by Joshua Harris' bestseller, I Kissed Dating Goodbye. Many of the ideas perpetuated by this culture were infused with fear and shame, offering no practical help or guidance in equipping young people to become healthy sexual human beings. As a result, shame accompanied any thoughts around sexuality; with guys trying to white-knuckle purity and falling short over and over again. Leaving them with feelings of self-hatred and hopelessness. Andrew hopes his brand new book will serve as the guide - providing comfort and clarity to those who find themselves in a similar struggle for sexual health. The essays in the book are not only for men but also for women who want to understand what healthy sexuality can look like in a partner. Speaking of women, you may remember Andrew's wife Christy as she was a guest on a September 2020 podcast called The Theology of the Womb. Definitely something worth checking out.Andrew has graciously provided us 2 copies copy of The Sexually Healthy Man that we'll send to a randomly selected listeners. Be sure to listen to next week's podcast for an update on the winners. In this podcast, we hope you will discover:How to engage with honor instead of objectification. For us to become whole, for us to become sexually healthy, we need to become embodied. What we believe is not what we say. Author Rachel Joy Welcher stops by to discuss what got left behind at the purity ball. About twenty years ago, a torrent of literature related to sexual purity was unleashed in Christian bookstores. It spawned an entire culture with purity rings, True Love Waits concerts, and yes, even purity balls. Some of it adhered to biblical truth...but some of it did not. In her new book, Talking Back to Purity Culture: Rediscovering Faithful Christian Sexuality, Rachel discusses the effects this had on the Church and how we should think about issues of sexual purity going forward.Links related to today's guest:Buy the bookPersonal websiteFathom MagazineTwitterInstagramFacebook
