For this week's main podcast review, Katie Johnson and Josh Parham join me to review and discuss the latest MCU Tom Holland Spider-Man film, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," starring Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Florence Pugh, Tramell Tillman, Marisa Tomei, and Mark Ruffalo. Taking over from Jon Watts director Destin Daniel Cretton steps into the director's chair and brings the larger than life spectacle of the MCU back down to the ground a little bit as the reset button is hit following the events of 2021's "No Way Home," where those who knew Peter Parker cannot remember him any longer, thus forcing our favorite web-slinger into isolation and depression, which leads to some unexpected changes in his DNA while a new mysterious foe emerges that will have ramifications across the entire MCU. Also, Bruce Banner (aka. Hulk), Frank Castle (aka. Punisher), and Yelena Belova (aka. Black Widow) show up! What did we think of it? Please tune in either on video or audio only as we discuss the film's story, its performances, action, humor, visual effects, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Ben and Rob are joined this week by a very special third mast, guest host Amber Poppit for an episode covering Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, the $250 million, 100% IMAX 70mm adaptation of Homer's original road trip gone wrong epic.Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the King of Ithaca who spends a decade failing to simply go home, alongside Tom Holland as his son Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as long suffering wife Penelope, The Odyssey rounds out its absurdly stacked cast with Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron as Circe, and Zendaya as Athena; the goddess whose entire arc has the internet arguing about whether she's a deity, a vision, or a guilt trip with cheekbones. It is, depending on who you ask, either Nolan's most ambitious swing yet or yet another film maker desperately trying to get Matt Damon home.Ben, Rob, and Amber dig into the "shot entirely on IMAX film" claim and what that actually means for a movie shot across real-world locations instead of a soundstage, the casting choices that had half of Film Twitter cheering and the other half frothing at the mouth, what this interpretation of Homer's The Odyssey is doing for culture and cinema as a whole, Ben proves without a doubt that we live in a time of apparent magic and the 3 embark on a journey almost as epic as The Odyssey itself. What if the weight of the world rested on the shoulders of a teenager? Join host Kevin Reid as he dives deep into the emotional and action-packed universe of Marvel's latest release, "Spider-Man: Brave New Day," on The K. B. Radio Network. This episode is a must-listen for any Marvel fan, as Reid delivers a comprehensive spoiler review that not only examines the film's thrilling plot but also unravels the intricate character arcs that make this installment stand out. From the iconic portrayal of Tom Holland as Spider-Man to the captivating performances of Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, Reid explores how each character contributes to Peter Parker's profound journey. With the haunting shadow of Aunt May's death looming over him, Reid discusses the themes of responsibility, grief, and the inevitable consequences of being a superhero. Is this the most emotionally resonant Spider-Man film ever made? Reid believes it just might be, praising the film's depth and the remarkable character development that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. One of the standout performances comes from Sadie Sink, who takes on the role of Jean Grey, bringing a fresh dynamic to the film. Reid also highlights John Bernthal's portrayal of Frank Castle, which adds layers of complexity to the story. However, he doesn't shy away from critiquing the unnecessary inclusion of Florence Pugh's character, sparking discussions on character relevance and narrative coherence. The pacing of the film and its portrayal of New York City are also key points of analysis, as Reid emphasizes how these elements enhance the viewer's experience. Unlike traditional superhero films, "Spider-Man: Brave New Day" challenges the notion of a singular villain, focusing instead on the internal struggles faced by Spider-Man. Reid's insights into this unique approach provide a fresh perspective on what it means to be a hero in a world filled with personal demons. As he wraps up the review, Reid speculates on the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, teasing the exciting possibilities that lie ahead, particularly with the upcoming "Secret Wars. "Don't miss this captivating episode of The K. B. Radio Network, where Kevin Reid delivers the ultimate spoiler-filled review of "Spider-Man: Brave New Day. " Whether you're a die-hard Marvel enthusiast or just curious about the latest superhero flick, this episode promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking listen that will leave you eagerly anticipating what comes next in the Marvel saga. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) Directed by: Destin Daniel Cretton Written by: Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers (based on the Marvel comic by Stan Lee & Steve Ditko) Starring: Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Michael Mando, Mark Ruffalo, Liza Colón-Zayas, Florence Pugh IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt22084616/ Episode Summary In this episode of Mindframes, Michael and Dave discuss Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), a soft-reboot superhero film that finds Peter Parker fighting crime full-time in a New York that no longer remembers he exists. The discussion explores whether the film's quieter, more introspective first act successfully re-energizes a fatigued genre, the wisdom of internalizing Spider-Man's central struggle as his own spider-DNA begins to take over ("spider puberty"), and a plot the hosts agree is overstuffed with characters and motivations. Along the way: Jon Bernthal's softened Punisher, Sadie Sink's tangential villain, an unnecessary Hulk, and some of the most aggressive BMW product placement either host can remember. Reference points include Sam Raimi, The Empire Strikes Back, and the boring-superhero cautionary tales of Superman Returns and Man of Steel. On-air verdicts: Dave — 4/5. Michael — 3/5. (Dave really enjoyed it; Michael landed mixed — "10% greatness, 90% mid" — praising the third act while faulting the loaded first two.) Thematic Discussion Spider-Man: Brand New Day explores loneliness, and the idea that community is vulnerability. The film suggests that even with superhuman strength, no one gets through isolation alone — that reaching out, being earnest, and letting people back in is the actual work, and the only real cure. Peter erased himself from everyone he loved to keep them safe; the film argues that choice was the wound, not the protection. Both hosts landed on the thematic point being earned: the melancholy is felt, the reconnection with Ned and MJ is left meaningfully ambiguous rather than reset, and Sadie Sink's character works as a dark-mirror counterpoint — the same loss, but a person who pushes everyone away instead. Timestamps Time Segment 00:00 Intro & setup 02:59 The soft reboot: smart move or gimmick? 07:28 Jon Bernthal's Punisher 10:55 The cast: Ned, the villains, a Benedict Wong tangent 14:36 Technical analysis: look, sound, pacing & product placement 24:02 An overstuffed plot and thin villain motivation 25:43 Director context: Raimi, Empire, and Cretton's roots 27:27 Spoiler-free verdicts 35:18 Spoiler section begins 35:29 Thematic deep dive: loneliness & connection as vulnerability 39:16 Is the ending earned? Method dressing is once again dominating the red carpet. At the Los Angeles premiere of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” on July 27, Zendaya arrived in an Ashi Studio fall 2026 gown with a plunging neckline framed by sculptural elements resembling a spider's appendages. Three days later, she and longtime stylist Law Roach continued the narrative at the film's London premiere with a cream Tamara Ralph couture gown traced with metallic, web-like lines. The London look was finished with a diamond-encrusted gold spider brooch by couture jewelry designer Keren Wolf, placed at the base of Zendaya's back. The piece was originally created to form part of a spiderweb headpiece designed by Shani Dvorkin with Wolf, before being reworked as an embellishment for the gown. Tom Holland joined in with an articulated spider brooch by British jeweler Pragnell, worn on the knot of his tie. The appearances were the latest demonstration of the red-carpet strategy Zendaya and Roach have helped turn into an entertainment-marketing event of its own, from “Dune” to “The Odyssey”. Instead of treating each premiere as an isolated fashion moment, they build a visual world across photocalls, press events and carpets, giving fans another reference to identify and circulate with every appearance. During the current “Spider-Man” tour, that has included a vintage Giorgio Armani dress covered in silver cobwebs at the film's Rome premiere on June 23 and a $34.99 vintage Spider-Man T-shirt sourced on eBay for a Paris photocall two days later. The pair have simultaneously been promoting Christopher Nolan's “The Odyssey,” shifting between literal spider references and contemporary interpretations of Greek dress. But as increasingly recognizable references become a fixture of movie promotion, celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger believes the most successful looks should not resemble costumes. Erlanger, whose clients include Lupita Nyong'o and Meryl Streep, prefers the term “meta dressing”: using colors, silhouettes and more discreet cultural references to connect an actor's wardrobe to a project without overwhelming the person wearing it. “For me, it hasn't always felt like it has to be that literal,” Erlanger said on the Glossy Podcast this week. “I like the idea of referencing a character, or referencing a film, a moment, a dialogue or a period in time, without it having to feel gimmicky or obvious.” Erlanger used that approach while styling Nyong'o, who plays Helen of Troy, for “The Odyssey” press tour. At the film's London premiere on July 6, Nyong'o wore a silver Christian Cowan gown with a relatively restrained silhouette from the front, but deep sculptural cutouts beneath the arms that revealed her figure from the side. Rather than reaching for an overtly Grecian chiffon dress, Erlanger wanted the look to communicate Helen's legendary beauty more indirectly. “She's playing Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman in the world,” Erlanger said. “You don't need a lot of clothing or a whole lot of look when it's about who the woman wearing the dress is and how she stands on her own.” Erlanger had limited information when she began working on the wardrobe. Nolan is known for keeping his films private, while Nyong'o initially disclosed little beyond the identity of her character. Erlanger instead drew from Homer's poem, Greek mythology and her own interpretation of Helen. For an earlier New York appearance, Nyong'o wore a custom Sally LaPointe look with ostrich feathers. The idea was developed by Erlanger and Nyong'o as a reference to the story that Helen was born after Zeus took the form of a swan. “If you know, you know,” Erlanger said. “Lovers of the book and Greek mythology might be able to pick up on that.” The outfit still worked independently for audiences unfamiliar with the reference, which is central to Erlanger's distinction between meta dressing and simply recreating a film's costume. She applied the same thinking while styling Streep during the press tour for “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” At an April 12 event in Shanghai, Streep wore a cobalt-blue Saint Laurent military-inspired coat dress with oversized sunglasses, subtly recalling both Miranda Priestly and the original film's famous cerulean monologue. In the speech, Priestly describes cerulean military jackets supposedly shown by Yves Saint Laurent before the color filtered down through the fashion system. The collection described in the screenplay never actually existed, making Streep's coat what Erlanger called “a reference within a reference.” “If you were paying attention, you would pick up on these kinds of things,” she said. Social media has made such details increasingly valuable. An obscure reference decoded by fans can become a viral post, generating attention for the actor, stylist, designer and film simultaneously. It has also brought stylists themselves out from behind the scenes. Erlanger said their work now extends far beyond choosing attractive clothes, encompassing public-image management, brand exposure and the strategic positioning of clients. “We are responsible for shaping the public image of some of the biggest names in entertainment,” she said. “There's a whole business to all of it.”

We're slinging into this week's episode...webslinging that is, because we're reviewing SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY (2:22). Tom Holland and Zendaya are back as Peter Parker and MJ, but this time they have to find their way back to each other in the wake of SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME's events. (By the way, how is the last live-action Spider-Man movie already from five years ago?!)  With the world having forgotten Peter Parker ever existed, our favorite wall-crawler has to face a powerful new villain while battling his own worst instinct: that he has to handle everything alone. Is it the best Spider-Man movie? Probably not. BRAND NEW DAY has plenty of great ideas, but too many of them feel underdeveloped. It runs longer than it needs to, and at times feels less like a complete story and more like a setup for whatever Marvel has planned next. In other news, in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we're reviewing the winner of our Sam Neill poll, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER!
