It's a welcome return to Soundtracking for composer Michael Giacchino, who joins us to discuss his work on Spider-Man: Brand New Day. On our first Comic Book Bears livestream for August 2026, the CBB boys (Steve, Caleb and Billy Z) spoke about Spider-Man: Brand New Day soon after it was released to cinemas. Here we are at the end of the month and it is still dominating the global box office, and now that livestream is here in audio form! The movie is the 38th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the fourth film in the MCU Spider-Man film series. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Florence Pugh, Marisa Tomei, and Mark Ruffalo with Sadie Sink as a major Marvel Comics character making her MCU debut. In the film, Peter Parker is on his own and dedicated to protecting New York City as Spider-Man, just as personal struggles and an evolutionary development to his superpowers complicate matters while contending with a new threat. As is the tradition when we have a film-based episode, we offer up what we thought of the movie (be forewarned, in a very spoileriffic manner) and then we each make a suggestion regarding a collected edition featuring characters from the film. After that we even get in a little bit of roundtable time to talk about some recent comics - in this case, Terminal #1 by Robert Kirkman, Joe Casey and Adam Kubert (Image Comics), the final installment of Heartstopper by Alice Oseman (Graphix) and the latest installments of Silence (#5: Dream and #6: Nightmare), the queer themed wordless project from Łukasz Majcher's Moom Comics! The idea that such a wealthy person feels the need to do this is a head scratcher to say the least. The fee was also worthy of note and it's obvious none of these guys have participated in this kind of activity.  Next they discuss how the crazy weather is affecting pretty much everything, including the struggles of Gary, Indiana, who were out of power for over a week. They speculate the lack of resources and lower income of the area are the reason the government has been slow to assist them. The recent storms have been stronger than normal. Could be El Niño if they actually knew what that was. They like a thunderstorm. But it drives the conversation to the unhoused community and their poor treatment in most areas.  In the second segment, Jason claims to know Zendaya very well. He's a name dropper but also completely full of it. They chat about a fascinating and oddly named fashion house called Fecal Matters. Is it rage baiting? They meander around the topic to discuss how different the Met Gala and similar events have changed over the years and have a different feel today. Art becomes the bigger conversation with Banksy and Any Warhol. Jason also unintentionally ruins a certain book plot for Jonathan but it has been redacted so he doesn't ruin it for anyone else. Jason is shaken up by almost experiencing a serious crash on his bicycle, which sparks a conversation about near death experiences and foolish decisions they've made in their youth. They each share scenarios in their past that could have been catastrophic including frost bite, jumping from tressels and bridges, foolish driving, drowning, and more. They end on a spicy Would You Rather involving meeting your clone. It doesn't go the way you might think.  And finally, Jordan is heading to Australia to run a marathon! That statement is crazy for so many reasons. Is life just unrelenting drudgery? Sure, the Psalmist describes it as a "vale of tears". But that bitterness is routinely alleviated by sweet music, good food, tenderness, friendship, the delight of a clever plan coming together (thanks, George Peppard), tears of joy as well as of sorrow. Or at least there is in real life and in Homer's Odyssey. But there doesn't seem to be much (any?) of those things in Christopher Nolan's unrealistic screen adaptation of the famous epic. Jeff and Dave devoted three hours of their lives to seeing the movie, now they ask you to surrender one hour of yours to listen to their screed. Bottom line? Nolan's Odysseus is a flattened, unimaginative, perpetually depressed character. His Calypso is dull, unappealing, merely therapeutic. His Penelope merely regal, not her husband's witty match as in Homer. And the gods? Though frequently mentioned and referenced, and in the case of Zendaya's Athena occasionally seen, the movie would have been pretty much the same without them. In conclusion, despite the stunning visuals, despite the beautiful scenery, give us the shampoo commercial of Wolfgang Peterson's Troy. And don't even get us started on the music.
