“I'm patient. I call it aggressively patient. I'm going hard for it all — but if it doesn't happen, there's still a process and I chip away for next time. That's how you become a champion. You don't just go out there and run and win. You have to have a journey and work hard. I'm always going hard.”Welcome back to Office Hours on the CITIUS MAG Podcast, where we explore the philosophy of the coaches who push the edges of human potential with some of the best athletes in track and field.Today's guest is someone who has climbed to some of the highest highs in the sport. Joanna Hayes is an Olympic gold medalist, a Hall of Famer, and currently the director of track and field and cross country at her alma mater UCLA. In 2024, she was named USATF's Coach of the Year — a recognition not just for her competitive pedigree, but her ability to cultivate greatness in others. She's coached legends like Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Rai Benjamin, ushered in record-breaking seasons at both USC and UCLA, and she's done it all while remaining grounded in values of respect, discipline, family, and joy. In this conversation, we explore what success does and doesn't change about how she leads, what it feels like to return to the place where it all started, the realities of coaching both elite professionals and college athletes and how the two are more connected than you think. We talk about legacy, resilience, motherhood, and what it means to show up not just as a coach, but as a human being who makes space for culture, connection, and yes, sometimes TikToks and fresh fits. Coach Hayes's story is one of full circle moments and forward motion. She's creating a new chapter at UCLA and you'll hear in this conversation why it's one worth watching and rooting for. This episode of The Future Built Smarter features Robbie Jones, an IMEG project executive and mechanical engineer who led the firm's design of the new Advanced Engineering Building at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas—ENR's 2024 Best of the Best Project in the higher education/research category. The Advanced Engineering Building (AEB), located in the university's “Innovation Corridor,” is designed to foster innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration within UNLV's Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering. The AEB supports growing enrollment, education, and research in robotics, cybersecurity, biomedical engineering, energy and water, and artificial intelligence. The three-story, 52,000-sf building features wet and dry labs, classrooms, a maker space, an outdoor aviary for drone testing, and a flexible auditorium or “flexatorium” that can be used as a lecture hall or event space. IMEG provided MEP and technology design for the facility, which also will aid start-ups in Nevada's growing tech industry. To ensure the MEP design would meet the needs of the university, Robbie, a UNLV engineering graduate, met with several engineering department faculty members—some of whom had been his professors when he was a student. “Never in a hundred years would I have thought that I would be designing an engineering building for UNLV,” says Robbie. “I was excited about doing it, and it was a cool thing for me … kind of a feather in my hat. I've done some billion-dollar gaming projects, and I think this is one of my favorite buildings.” Read the IMEG case study to see photographs of the AEB and learn more about the engineering design. For a tour of the building, watch this UNLV video.
Lewis has returned from some shows performed at his Alma Mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Is it part nostalgia trip, or perhaps more an acid flashback. But while Lewis had all the intentions about talking about performing at his college but he got distracted by the news of the week where people are going to have to tighten their belts as both dolls and pencils are going to become sparse as there's a chance AI is picking the new Pope? That doesn't seem odd, right? Oh and now there's news of an expensive military parade, which we hear is a cost-cutting measure. Alright, what's going on? Andrew and Mary host this week's episode in front of a live audience at Princeton University, starting with the latest in the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case where last Tuesday, Maryland district judge Paula Xinis ordered the Trump administration to provide among other things, “butts in seats” to explain their efforts to get him back. Then they describe what led up to the Supreme Court's early Saturday decision temporarily blocking the deportation of more Venezuelan migrants, after a flurry of back and forth between the Solicitor General and the ACLU. And being at Andrew's alma mater, he and Mary hold up the absolute necessity of academic freedom and independence in the wake of Trump's attempts to defund universities who do not comply with his demands. Last up, they touch on the Supreme Court granting argument in the birthright citizenship cases- not on the merits, but on whether a nationwide injunction is appropriate in this instance.Further reading: HERE is Judge Harvie Wilkinson's sharply worded opinion, writing for a 3-judge panel in the US Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, rejecting the Trump administrations effort to stop a lower court's order that the government facilitate Kilmar Abrego Garcia's return.Want to listen to this show without ads? Many warm thoughts crossed my mind as I attended the 20th Winter Commencement at the University of South Dakota. Amid all the pomp and circumstance, I was in the audience giving cheers to my colleagues for their achievements. Graduation at Christmas time with holiday festivities seems to have special meaning for many families. The commencement address was given by a very successful businessman, who also received the Distinguished Service Award from President Betty Turner Asher. The speaker, Doug Scholl, spoke on the "A" life - our advanced thinking can help us to give something back, we can soar with the eagles, our attitude is important in making choices...He warned us not to associate with people who hate. I was reminded, as I reflected on his "A" message of one of the many letters I received with holiday greetings. It was from Nebraska's 1995 Mother of the year, Jeannie Berry. She wrote that as we read the papers, our prayer is to close the door of hate and open the doors of love all over the world. Again, the Alma Mater song sung by the choir had even more special meaning as I listened, "South Dakota, how dear to thy children, thy name, how daring the tales offer retold of thy builders who first to thy wilderness came. There's a glory that never grows old. Oh, the pine crested peaks of these storied Black Hills, the Missouri that ribbons thy plain, where the slant summer sunshine so lavishly spills over prairie in pasture and grain, younger feet shall come trooping to gather thy wealth. Younger voices shall ring through thy halls, keep us true to the type of the brave pioneer, no hardship, air daunted his quest, alma mater lead on to the untried frontier. We follow the trail to the west." May these warm thoughts touch your heart during this beautiful holiday season.Warm Thoughts to ponder: Wise men still seek him. A Happy New Year to you all! "A lot of those kids watching me growing up...they saw so much hope when they saw me. So I was like, let me go feed my soul and complete the mission God put me here to do." Teddy Bridgewater coaching & winning High School State Championship On this episode of The Pivot Podcast, fresh off a huge milestone, Teddy Bridgewater sits with Ryan, Fred, and Channing to talk about his full circle journey—how a kid from Miami went to Louisville, paved the way for black quarterbacks becoming an NFL All Pro then after a decade in the league, returned to his old high school this season to coach the football team to a state championship. After 10 years in the NFL and enduring devastating injuries to come back and play in the league again, Teddy realized he had something bigger left to give the game he loves so much…which led him back to his hometown. Teddy's not just shaping athletes; he's inspiring an entire community, one game at a time. For Teddy, coaching isn't just about X's and O's. It's about giving back to the kids who grew up just like he did. He talks to the guys about what it means to help these boys grow into men on and off the field, build a culture of tough love but more importantly create an unbreakable bond of unity and belief in the community. The monumental moment of winning is a priceless feeling for Teddy, but now see says he's ready to return to the NFL and show those same young men he coached, how passion and hard work can lead you to your biggest dreams. As the conversation continues, the guys get into the personal side of Teddy's story—the moments that shaped him, the values that keep him grounded and how witnessing first-hand his mom's strength during her toughest battle against breast cancer, is when he truly learned the power of prayer and resilience. Although Teddy keeps his life private, he isn't shy about the lessons he's learned from all the great coaches who influenced his life and inspired his journey. Teddy takes the time to open up about his bond with MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, another Louisville legend who credits Teddy as one of his biggest inspirations. For him, watching Lamar take the league by storm is more meaningful than he can put into words and he's proud to have been a role model for this next generation of quarterbacks. Whether you've been a fan of Teddy since his Louisville days, followed his NFL journey, or just enjoy a good story about resilience, heart, and community, this discussion is filled with gems and unforgettable stories. Let's take a moment and define community, particularly in today's very divided and extraordinary divisive environment where community and, in many cases, democracy is misunderstood and missused. Community in its simplest form is often defined as a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals; upon further elaboration, it can include a joint ownership or liability - not sure I like liability part, but I get the nuance behind it, which I think is best articulated by Maya Angelou who beautifully wrote: “If it is true that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, isn't it also true that a society is as healthy as its sickest citizen and only as wealthy as its most deprived?” Taking this a bit further… Democracy is defined as a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives including the practice or principles of social equality. This podcast is not a civics lesson although I think many of us could benefit from understanding the benefits and shared responsibilities of living in an equitable, not equal, but equitable society where we are actively participating in maintaining the health of our society as a whole, meaning all of its people… One individual saw the need to build this in Los Angeles and my hope is that it spreads everywhere if it hasn't already. A former litigator, with a PhD in Policy from USC, my Alma Mater, with a long history in philanthropic efforts and leadership, Dr. Denise McCain responded to a 2012 request from the Los Angeles City Library for a homeless youth resource guide, Dr. McCain developed and published a comprehensive, citywide Directory of Services for Homeless Youth, known at that time as: Our Children LA. This effort was SO successful that expansion was both sought after and necessary, evolving into the nonprofit, Our Community LA, Or OCLA, with the tagline: Technology, Empowerment, Connections, Hope and their mission is to leverage technology that connects youth, families, and adults experiencing homeless or in need to easily connect to essential resources that can help them make positive changes in their lives; They are doing just that with the WIN APP - WHAT I NEED - easy to remember and easy to use; OCLA's long-term commitment is to social justice by envisioning a world in which no one will be hungry, unhoused or in need of important supportive service, enabling individuals to build a life out of poverty, abuse or neglect.
